im disabled and have bad eyesight so anytime i ID something im always so nervous im missing something/got the text wrong. i have so many random screenshots & downloaded photos on my phone so i can zoom in 100% and squint at it for 5 minutes solid just to type dong instead of dont and publish it confidently <3

Anyone noticed how "weaponry" is used nowadays in places where "weapons" would work just fine (and is often more correct)?

Yes, they ARE interchangeable, sort-of, but it's clunky and sounds to me either slightly journo-pompous or like a failure to remember the right word so plugging the most similar one into its place.

ETA: I checked one of my dictionaries, and while "weapons" is more modern, "weaponry" is an obsolete word which has come back into favour. I wonder why...?

"Decimate" turns up all the time, usually when the correct word is "devastate".

Merriam-Webster says: "It's totally fine to use 'decimate' as a synonym for 'devastate'. This is why."

Beg to differ.

As the M-W article points out, "decimate" originally meant a Roman military punishment applied to one man in ten of a guilty unit. (Initially execution, but this had a rotten effect on unit morale, so it was reduced in severity to fatigues, extra drill or restricted rations.)

That's now considered a far too specific meaning and only linguistic pedants dig their heels in. Quite right too, and I speak here as a (bit of a) linguistic pedant...

However, it remains a useful word for more generalised incomplete destruction of living things - saying a regiment, flock, herd or population was "decimated" implies there are some survivors without quibbling over how many tenths. If totally wiped out, however, that's when words like "destroyed" or "obliterated" are more appropriate.

On the other hand something inanimate like a factory, city or region would be "devastated" - and in addition, saying someone is emotionally devastated is understandable, but saying they're emotionally decimated is peculiar.

Two words, several meanings.

It's like cutlery: a spork can replace knife, fork and spoon, but individual utensils give a lot more precision and variation of use.

There are also a couple of real howlers, not just transposed words but actual errors.

One I've heard several times is using "siege" (a noun, or thing) instead of "besiege" (a verb, or action).

For reference, there's a term called noun-verbing, and the practice is quite old: "table the motion / pencil you in / butter him up / he tasks me", but all are either when there isn't already a verb-form of the word, or as a more picturesque way of saying something.

(Interesting side-note about "table the motion": in US English, it means "to postpone discussion" while in UK, CA and I think AU English, it means the complete opposite, "to begin discussion". Why there's this difference, I have no idea, but it's worth remembering as a Brit-fix when writing, also in a real-life business context.)

There IS an existing verb for the action of surrounding a castle and cutting it off from outside help, and that verb isn't "sieged". It's "besieged" or "under siege". Anywhere using "sieged" as a verb is wrong. The Firefox spellchecker in Tumblr Edit Mode is telling me it's wrong right now.

Merriam-Webster, I'm looking at you again.

There's also "coronate" used as a verb. "The King was coronated at Westminster Abbey". Nope. He was CROWNED.

Coronate is an adjective (meaning crown-shaped) and was coined in in the 1600s by a botanist, as a word to describe the shape of certain plants.

The current Royal-associated usage seems to be a bastard back-formation from "coronation", because the act of putting on a crown is the verb "to crown".

This is almost identical in German, French, Italian and Spanish, with noun and verb the same. The only difference is that their verbs have, what a surprise, verb-endings (-en, -er, -re and -ar) on the noun while English does not.

Because English doesn't like to make things that easy...

"Coronated" might be people trying to sound archaic, or those who've bought into the dopey "said-is-dead" school, who perform any linguistic contortion to avoid common words, and who've been taught that repetition in a sentence - "crowned with a crown" - is BAD.

Is "coronated at a coronation" in some way better?

Guess what's got uncritical examples...

If that's M-W scholarship, I'll stick to the OED and my old but utterly reliable New Elizabethan Dictionary, thanks very much.

the two girls began laughing, sydney using her spork to pick at the food on the tray and bella's eyes fixated behind her twin. "who are they?" she asked finally.

the three other girls turned to look. "the cullens," angela replied.

"they're, um, dr. and mrs. cullen's foster kids," jessica said. "they moved down here from alaska, like, a few years ago."

"they kind of keep to themselves," angela said quietly.

jessica grinned and leaned in closer. "yeah, cause they're all together. like, together, together," she whispered as two of them walked in. "the blonde girl, thats rosalie, and the big dark-haired guy, emmet, they're, like, a thing. i'm not even sure thats legal."

her friend chuckled. "jess, they're not actually related."

"yeah, but they live together. it's weird," she said, turning over her shoulder as another duo walked in. "and, okay, the little dark-haired girl's alice. she's really weird, and she's like, best friends with jasper, the blonde one who looks like he's in pain. dr. cullen's like this foster dad/matchmaker."

"maybe he'll adopt me," angela said as she smiled sweetly.

bella's brows furrowed as she looked to another boy walking through the door. "who's he?"

jessica smiled. "that's edward cullen. he's totally gorgeous, obviously, but apparently nobody here's good enough for him. like i care, you know?" she laughed awkwardly. "so, yeah. seriously, like, don't waste your time."

the twins looked back at the table where the five of them sat then back to their own table. "i wasn't planning on it," bella replied.

"miss swan," the woman greeted. "welcome to biochem. here is everything you'll need through the end of the month. if you need anything else, feel free to ask me or any of your classmates. my name is mrs. visak."

she gratefully took the supplies and the stack of paper then looked around. "thank you. i just had one question," she said, the woman humming in response. "where should i sit?"

"you can take a seat in the back corner desk with alice," she said with a smile before sliding her glasses back on and beginning to tend to her papers.

she recognized her. she had just seen her in lunch. the honey blonde haired boy, she remembered him as jasper, was also standing by the desk talking to her.

so she awkwardly walked through the aisle and down towards the pair. upon seeing her coming, alice grabbed jaspers forearms and pulled him in front of the desk so sydney could squeeze past.

"hi," the brunette said with a sweet smile as the other got settled in. "i'm alice." she extended her arm with an open hand.

"sydney," she replied, taking her hand and shaking it with a friendly smile.

alice looked the her friend then back to her new partner. "sydney, this is jasper. jasper, sydney," she introduced.

"pleasure to meet you," he said with a grin, outstretching his hand.

her hand grasped his lightly, shaking it as she smiled. "nice to meet you too."

"well, you better get going. class is about to start," alice warned jasper. "and i wanna talk to sydney." he bid his goodbyes then headed off to somewhere in front of the room. "so, how are you liking forks?"

Alright let's take a closer look at this.

This eyes-closed take seems to be right in the middle of the shoot. It also appears to be edited to have a softer lighting than the rest. This & the fact that Phil still keeps it, I'd say it's shortlisted to be posted on 10 Sep 2020.

That was my birthday so thanks dnp for such a special gift. But anyway!

Look at the progression of poses. The part of camera roll they screenshot for us shows Dan already in the position, at the right spot in front of the fireplace screen, legs folded just right, nipples hidden.

He started with relaxed poses, knowing exactly what he wanted it to look like so only subtle head tilts and eyebrow quirks were needed. He also gave the tiniest of playful smirks and a LOOK as if to challenge us. It's taking so long now though; the wine glass was getting heavy.

There isn't a lot you can do in this position. He turned this way and that. The photographer kept giving silly directions. What the F does he mean to give him more "smouldering?"

He started to make silly faces and that damn photographer didn't even giggle. He said,

"Dan, come on. Close your eyes for a sec. Moisten your eyeballs. Take a deep breath. We’re getting there.”

And that’s what Dan did. Then he opened his eyes and they started again. Time passed. Neck stiff. Smouldering delivered. Finally they called it a day and picked some contenders together.

In the end, after he edited some good ones, made sure there were still no nips to be seen, they ended up picking the one they took very early in the shoot anyway. That second one from the top in the camera roll screenshot.

And he made Dan go through all that. What a spork, ugh.

Can you do the new sternritter's Vollstandig Name in the new anime?

Oh yeah, I wasn't sure if there had been any kanji released for that but it seems like the Bleach wiki has something up there for them, although they haven't cited their sources, as usual... They cite the chapter and episode they each appear in respectively, but go figure, you guys... the anime appearance does not include t e x t. So no idea where either the kanji or the romanized names came from.(wait did they get the kanji and katakana from Japanese closedcaptioning? Do they include furigana on [cc] in Japan??)

This wound up way longer than I'd intended...

Barbarriel[神の雷霆] phonetically, BA-RU-BA-RI-E-RU[バルバリエル]. So weirdly this is how Japanese defines the name Ramiel/Remiel/Reniel[רַעַמְאֵל] the name of an actual biblical angel, so both Japanese epithets here, plus the original hebrew all translate as "Thunder of God." But oddly it sounds a lot more like Bariel, which is an angel named in the Ars Paulonia, part of the Lesser Key of Solomon, a grimoire foundational to a lot of the surviving legacy of Christian occultism and demonology nonsense.(i.e. It was some nerd's 18th century Pokedex of fanfic and headcanons.) That being said, it has no actual meaning the way biblical angels(Gabriel, Raphael, Ariel, Uriel, Michael, etc...) do, because it's not hebrew and the idiot who made it up in the 1800s obviously didn't know what he was talking about. It is of course the exact same kanji used for her Schrift The Thunderbolt[雷霆].

Azhalbiora[神の死] meaning "Death of God" and written as phonetically A-ZA-RU-BI-O-RA[アザルビオラ]. Other than seemingly a little lazy the name just kinda doesn't make a lot of sense as a name for her power. Also since i have no idea where they got these I don't really know if that's an -AL- or an -AR-, a -BI- or a -VI-, or a -ORA or an -OLA. And once again there is no apparent basis in actual angelic names so it's not like there's context to work with. It has an almost vaguely fake "arabic" sound to it? Like the sort of shit H.P Lovecraft would've come up with?

Pornipora[神の力] I'm sure any weeb worth their salt can recognize the kanji for "power," so it's "Power of God." And the phonetics are POO-NI-PO-RA[ポーニポラ], again, PORA? POLA? Who can say.

Gagael[神の飢え] at last something resembling creative input! "Hunger of God," in which [飢え] is not just directly lifted from her existing Schrift. ([食いしんぼう]: "Glutton/Gourmand." Same root kanji though so they weren't thinking that hard.) And while the phonetics, GA-GA-E-RU[ガガエル] are yet more gibberish, they at least go back to the sort of appropriated hebrew -el[אֵל] meaning "of god" used in the names of the aforementioned biblical archangels.

[edit]: and since there's a new one to add to this list...

So, you've probably noticed these all just use the same kanji as the girls' actual Schrifts, so there's nothing terribly clever going on, which isn't too surprising but is kind of a shame no one took the opportunity to get creative with it. (Even the attacks names they peppered into the extended fight scene were a little too goofy and bland for my taste. I mean, come on, giving Lili attacks called Spork and Spife?? Really?)

Thunder[雷霆] and Thunder[雷霆]

Deadperson[死者] and Dead[死]

Power[力] and Power[力]

Glutton[食いしんぼう] and Hunger[飢え]

For comparison the side by side on Kubo's actual Vollstandig and associated Schrift were:

Love[愛] vs Love[情愛] (I don't know how to clarify the distinction between these two words... the former is more broad? Like it can include a few extra examples the latter can't?)

Penetrate Everything[万物貫通] vs Judgement[裁き]

Lethal Dose[致死量] vs Tasting(for poison)[毒見]

Miracle[奇跡] vs Authority[権能]

Are basically all gibberish too, so I can't exactly say the names don't fit a "pattern," since there isn't on, but they still don't feel quite right to me, save maybe Lili's. Hasshein and Aschetonig are at least clearly playing with German-esque phonetics*, and Piskiel, Grimaniel, and Jilliel are all playing into recognizable angelology cliches. (Gudoero/Gudoel might be too, but in a way that's hard to separate it from the clearl intentional "ero" wordplay. It just doesn't work outside of th eJapanese phonetics.) And Tartarforas is just suspiciously close to Tartarus but otherwise doesn't really register to my ear as any language that would make sense in the context of the Quincy's associations...

Wait... The German sounding ones might actually be German after all. Like, bad German, but technically German...

*Asche is a n fact German for "Ash," and Ton is "Clay," in fact Tonig can mean "Clayley" as in "Clay-like" so I guess Gerard's actually is German for "Clay-like Ash"... That's actually kind of cool, and vaguely biblical? Adam being sculpted from clay, and "Ashes to ashes, dust to dust" and all that? Huh... Weird I never bothered to actually check that I guess, I just assumed if most of them were nonsense that even the ones that sounded more legit would be too...

Wait... Damn... have I really been slacking this much???

The Haß sound in Hasshein could be the German for "Hate" and although it's not really a ""word"" in a functional sense by itself, hein is a part of the term Freund Hein is a kind of grim reaper where, I guess "Hein" was kind of an old euphemism for the devil for some reason? So, Death personified is the "Friend (of) Hein/TheDevil" but I'd bet the intended reading of Kubo's slapdash German here would be "Hate(s) Death" as is suitable to Askin's whole shtick of narrowly avoiding death.

I'm mad I never sat down and tried to hash those out sooner...
