Supernatural “Heart of the Dragon” by Keith R.A. DeCandido

This is the second installment of my reviews of the Supernatural novel series, here is the first.

"Heart of the Dragon" is the fourth book in the series, and takes place shortly after season fives episode Changing Channels. (there is a historians note in the beginning of the book.)

Rating: 3/5 (getting better!)

This story follows another ghost murder cycle, this time it is every 20 years and takes place in Chinatown, San Francisco. We follow Sam and Dean in 2009, John in 1989, and Samuel, Deanna, and Mary Campbell in 1969 as everyone tries to get rid of the ghost and demon on the same hunt.

First things first, this book has some insanely racist shit through (mainly) the first third of the book, and it nearly pushed me to DNF when I first began. The author consistently uses dated slurs for Chinese and Japanese Americans throughout making the story overall plain awful and difficult to read. This book is well written and interesting in other respects, and it is great in regards to it being a story about Supernatural. If you’re going to read it be careful and know what you’re getting into. That all being said, it is impossible to ignore the racist bullshit so I’m docking two points.

Other than that, this story caught me off guard with how well it handled the Campbells and John's perspectives. In the main SPN canon we don't know much about Deanna, other than she was just kind of there, in this story she is fleshed out more and is really a badass. Samuel and John are paralleled a lot between their two perspectives, both being generally bad fathers who raised their children in constant danger. In the 1989 sections we also get a glimpse of Bobby caring for a young Dean and Sam, which made me very teary-eyed. Oh, and bonus points for Cas appearances, while they were few and far between I enjoyed them.

Overall this story was a great dive into characters we didn't see much of in the main series, and an expansion of what we already knew about John's A+ parenting. If you decide to read this book precede with caution, as mentioned before it comes with a heaping of racist BS in the beginning.

I have never been prouder of Castiel than I was when he walked out on Dean at the end of 15x3. I punched the air I was so proud of him. I was HAPPY for him. I was not sad. I was proud. Leaving an abusive situation, being honest and walking away. Not putting up with that treatment any more. THAT is how I feel about the character of Castiel. It is not about Dean for me. It is about Cas. In retrospect, I would have been okay if that had been his final scene. I swear to god I have never.been.prouder. I was like "YES. That's my angel! Bravo! Do you need me to come pick you up? Do you need a place to stay? I will drop everything and come get you right now stay right where you are. We gonna drive to San Francisco and I'll introduce you to some nice kind gay guys who will appreciate you for who you are. I will hook you tf up, dude. Don't you EVER think you deserve to be treated cruelly or like you don't matter. Come on, let's see how fast this thing can go!" Vroom vroom, motherfucker. I would've gladly been his getaway driver and put Dean Winchester firmly in the rearview.

I gonna take a guess that both the anons are same.

I confess that I have a love hate relationship with 15x03 scene, I was proud of Cas in that scene, of course, but at the same time I wish there was more, not just in the scene but also after it.

I was waiting for Cas to explode since the graveyard, but because SPN can't bare to see a fult in their golden boy, Dean didn't have to face any consequences of pointing a gun at Jack. Like even after that and blaming Cas, unfairly at that, he barked orders at Cas, did not care for his safty and made him work with a demon in Jack's corpse, Cas torn Dean apart, left him in ruins and not on his feet

I wish Cas had gotten more after leaving, I wish Billie had come to him and involved him in the plan, something like that. Or may be some friendships, maybe relationships. Just more

And that prayer in purgatory? Maybe if Jensen Ackles didn't look so pretty crying, everyone would have realised that was utter bullshit

can confirm jared wants creative input on SPN revival but I think he wants it focused on the brothers. I did the meet and greet with him in San Francisco last month. He was adament about doing a revival, and that both he and Jensen would be calling the shots, because as he put it, no one knows the characters better.

Hence his suggestion of the 5 years gap between 15x19 and 15x20, so plenty of possibilities to mine during that time period of Sam and Dean's adventures, even briefly meeting Sam's future bride.

Jared and Jensen know their characters the best, but they have to tread carefully with writers. When Jenna Ortega took a stand for her Wednesday character, it pissed off a writer who then called her "entitled" and "toxic". He went on to say that actors don't have the full picture in TV of where the story is going. Well yeah, that's because writers are making up shit as they go. I posted here on why actors are at the bottom of the food chain for writers.

Thank you @ambersock for the nudge/inspiration to reflect on things I'm really proud of.

Job & Family This one is definitely top of my list because it’s dear to my heart in so many ways.  I spent 26 months writing this 600k beast.  It has several of my favorite original characters and fight scenes.  I love that act one starts pretty straightforward, then it jumps the rails with the second act (and I love the inherent trust of any reader who is willing to hang on).  The story gave me so much room to world build across multiple planes and dive into the politics and culture of Hell in particular. It’s simply the sandbox I could play in forever.

Beyond the End, There is a Season I often describe this fic as “Job & Family was several seasons of a tv show.  Beyond the End is a movie.”  My goal with the fic was to really dig into pacing and tension to play with suspense.  The main inspiration were 28 Days Later and A Quiet Place— with the added priority of a really mess interpersonal dynamic (post-canonical-betrayal Sam and Ruby).  It’s like 100k with the first 80% being almost entirely just Sam and Ruby having to work together.  Both in that character/relationship study and in individual moments, it lingers in a way I love.  I’m so proud of how it turned out.

Time for a Lesson My version of a dark fic.  It was for a dark fic bang and part of my challenged to myself was not relying on sexual violence to do the heavy lifting of danger.  I wanted to make the most unnerving, menacing Demon!Dean I could, one that would inevitably flay the canonical one.  Sam’s character arc in this one is something I’m very pleased with.  And I delight in this dark fic’s inspiration being Treason by the Book (a historical account of a failed incitement to treason, and specifically the poor bastard who got a target on his back because someone tried to incite him).

Cybernatural I don’t blame anyone for not giving this one a chance; it’s an odd one, but it has a lot of things that I’m so happy with.  The inspiration was, “If I could write a spn spinoff, what would the first season look like?”  This was my attempt at noir (it’s actually neo noir because it’s set in the future with some minor sci-fi tech), a genre that I actually didn't really like prior to writing this, but I studied it as part of the challenge to myself and grew to really appreciate its style.  It was also my attempt at writing an old version of Sam, particularly one struggling with passing the torch and his own insecurities.  I dig its case fic/noir vibe, and I cackled wildly at making readers read through a sex scene involving elderly people… because I often think of myself as your antagonist, here to put you where you never thought you’d be.

The Uncomfortable Adventures of Sam in Law School (WIP) Despite the fact that it is incomplete, this is another instance of world building that I’m so deeply proud of.  Stanford-era Sam getting caught up in the magic subculture of the San Francisco Bay Area.  Magical realism, drugs, lots of sex, Sam having anxiety and major illness, a chapter that delves into hunter culture and Sam’s relationship with his dad and Dean— that chapter is one of my favorite things I’ve ever written. It's a piece that's so special to me that what holds me back most from completing it is fear of letting it down, but I hold out hope that with time and renewed practice (and maybe a couple vacations or ADHD medication to reboot me) I'll grow braver. Time will tell.

we listened to a lot of American radio and the amount of times. "Carry On My Wayward Son." by Kansas. comes up on US radio

and every time my sib was like "haha man this song rules" and sings along and I am just. white-knuckling the steering wheel. but I didn't break. I held it together. until we were leaving San Francisco and had heard it for the eighth time and I could no longer help spewing out "IN CASE you didn't know this song is heavily associated with spn it plays at all the conventions and in the season recaps and the band Kansas was supposed to be in the finale [some time later] and THEN they used this weird delicate cover version, right? over a terrible montage which COULD be a clue that there's something up with this heaven [another geological age passes] and really isn't that all tied up with the fraught masculinity of rock and the dichotomy of desire like you KNOW he wants to fuck Robert Plant"

thank you for your post! i saw the tweet and felt a bit bad because yes i did start the show because of the kiss, i wouldn’t have otherwise thinking that i was just gonna get too hopeful and crushed again (*cough* spn *cough*)

but now i’m watching, and i love every single character and their stories, and knowing that it’s headed somewhere good makes it a lovely experience

Okay, so this made me a little verklempt. And I'm sorry if anyone is making you feel unwelcomed just because the kiss got you to watch.

Back in '07 I had never heard of Doctor Who. I saw a picture of Jack Harkness and Ianto Jones kissing in S1Ep13 of Torchwood. So I immediately started looking into it. Because queer and sci-fi, oh yes please. After finding out it was a spin-off I started with the first episode of Christopher Eccleston and was hooked. In the years since I went to two Gallifrey conventions in LA, I've done a Master cosplay, I've done photo ops with 3 Doctors and numerous companions, I've written fic and collected merch. All started because I saw a photo of this moment.

And funny enough actually my very first convention was a Supernatural one in San Francisco '11.

So again in my own rambling way welcome to the fandom. Please enjoy our ridiculous show. And I'm sorry if anyone ever makes you feel bad for getting into fandom late.
