This will be a triple decker book recommendation, cause they're all by Tillie Walden
Tumblr media
With "Are You Listening?", I picked it up from the library on a whim. It's about two runaways who crossed roads and happen to know each other, lot on their minds. Then they find a lost cat, and decided to find its home. Should give a content warning for mentions of sexual assault, which is a spoiler for one of the character's arc, but thought it should be brought up anyway. It gets heart wrenching at times, I'm a sucker for stories where characters are trying to work through their own issues while crazy shit is going on. I highly recommend it, plus it looks very pretty, I love the colors of this book so much. This one is my favorite out of the three.
Tumblr media
With "Spinning", its a solid autobio coming of age story. I like how there's not so much a conclusion or an arc, but it still has a great flow to it. Don't have much to say other than how compelling it is, talking a bit about waning away from your major hobby cause life just happens, and it's okay.
Tumblr media
And finally, "Alone in Space". I can't say I recommend it over the other books, but its a nice little collection; you can see the progression of Walden's style taking form, and the stories are still just as solid.

Tillie Walden idk if you have tumblr but your book a city inside always makes me cry. You’re an excellent writer and artist and it’s insane you can pull so much emotion from me in a 49 page comic. I don’t even know if I fully understand the meaning but thank you for publishing this I love it so much. <3<3<3

Spinning - Graphic Novel Review
"Spinning", the graphic novel memoir by Tillie Walden is like a slice of sadness wrapped in pretty paper - it's gorgeously drawn, but steadily melancholic, from page one until the end.
⭐⭐⭐⭐ Rating: 3.5 out of 5. Sneha Jaiswal (Twitter | Instagram) “Spinning”, the graphic novel memoir by Tillie Walden is like a slice of sadness wrapped in pretty paper – it’s gorgeously drawn, but steadily melancholic, from page one until the end. “I was a competitive figure and synchronized skater for twelve years,” Tillie tells readers on the first page of the memoir, which only has one…

Tillie Walden
I have read many graphic novels in the past 4 years. But none have been as influential as Tillie Walden’s. I was introduced to her by my librarian recommending me one of her books in June. I’ve read 4 of them: On a Sunbeam, Clementine Book One, Spinning, and Are you Listening. Each one has stuck with me more than other books I’ve read do.
Some slight spoilers for these books ahead. Nothing too severe, but be aware.
I read On a Sunbeam first. I still think back to that book. The effortless representation of nonbinary people, queer couples, and disability (mainly, mutism). The world building? Absolutely gorgeous. And the characters. Each and every one of them had their own importance and their own personality. I can’t gush enough about it.
It’s a big boi. 500+ pages. But I was sucked in on page 1 and carried the same attention through the entire book. Every arc, every panel, I loved it. I almost didn’t want it to end, but it ended so well.
Tumblr media
Then there was Clementine Book 1. I’ve seen a good portion of The Walking Dead games, and I feel like Walden did this universe and Clem as a character justice. I’ve seen critiques of the book where people didn’t like that it started way different from the end of Chapter 4, mainly with Clem leaving AJ, but for me I’m not insanely attached to the games and I’m not super hung up on canon so it worked.
The book was a little slow to start, but as I continued reading I fell deeper into the book universe. I loved her take on Clementine, I loved the introduction of new complex characters, and some of the dialogue (especially in the end of the book) was really powerful. Some of those characters definitely could have been explored deeper, but I’ve learned that graphic novels operate so differently from “normal” novels that not everything will be laid out flat in front of us. I’m excited to see the rest of the trilogy.
Tumblr media
Then Spinning. I’m glad this wasn’t my introduction to Tillie Walden. It wasn’t my favorite of the four, but it was an enjoyable read. I liked learning more about her childhood and teen-hood. Not much to say about this one, to be honest. Just an enjoyable experience to read and enjoy her art style more.
Tumblr media
And last up: Are you Listening. I really liked this one. It was full of grief and not knowing how to handle emotions and the development of a friendship on an unlikely circumstance. Plus a special cat.
It’s a deep read. I’ll be honest. We’ve got the grief of losing a mom and a traumatic experience of SA, as well as trying to find your way (both in the literal “road” sense and the metaphorical sense of life). But that was what made me like this book so much. The emotional connection and the deep feelings it instilled.
Tumblr media
And that’s why I’ve liked Tillie Walden as much as I do. Each of her books has left that emotional mark on me. Others may have different opinions, but that’s mine. I can’t wait to read more of Walden’s books, and I can’t wait to see what gets published in the future.

⛸ Spinning by Tillie Walden
I fell in love with Walden’s writing and art-style after reading On a Sunbeam, and I initially picked this up for a book club at my local library. Sadly, I won’t be able to make the meeting, but that didn’t deter me from finishing this graphic novel surrounding Walden’s experiences with figure skating for several years.
This isn’t just about figure skating, though. This book captures how we change and how our worlds change as we age, meet new people, and travel. Walden has a beautifully done art style with a simply complex, and sometimes emotional story to tell.
And it’s worth reading.
