Gonna be honest I'm not really a Spike/Xander shipper however I will die on this hill: I'm like 90% sure that they had some kind of sexual encounter at some point. Probably when Spike was living in Xander's basement.
Like.
Spike calling Xander a nummy treat. Repeated jokes about Xander and Spike sleeping together.
"Is there anyone here who hasn't slept together?" and then Spike and Xander smirk at each other.
I'm sorry but something happened between them at some point. At the very least they kissed.

Thinking about some Spike x Xander headcanons
Xander initially hates the smell of Spike's cigarettes, they kinda make his eyes water, but over time he grows used to it and it becomes somewhat of a comfort. When he misses Spike he'll light a cigarette and let it burn in the ashtray so it feels like he's there.
Their sleep schedules are absolutely borked from trying to go to bed at the same time. Spike usually takes the hit because he knows he doesn't need too much sleep and he can take naps when Xander is at work.
Spike is very physically affectionate and it makes Xander a bit uncomfortable in the beginning because he's still dealing with some internalized homophobia. But he gets used to it and Spike's cool hands become a source of comfort to him.
Spike really enjoys resting his fingers on Xander's pulse points or right on his chest, the steady beating of his heart comforts and sometimes arouses him.
Xander tends to run hot, especially when he's nervous. Spike's cold touch soothes and grounds him and Spike appreciates the heat that radiates from him.
It took a while for them to communicate consistently with each other but Spike adapted first and better, things like being able to hear a pulse quicken or smell/sense certain feelings made it much easier to read Xander than it was for Xander to read Spike.

Spander for the ship bingo!
So while I do like the idea of Xander working out his trauma with Jesse's death and being the one to stake him (accidentally, so he'll never know for sure if he could have done it for real) with Spike and the two of them having a serious, healthy relationship...
Mostly I like this as a crack ship. The two of them in Xander's basement trying to pretend they're not enemies with benefits. Xander getting mildly inconvenienced and Spike wondering if it'd be cool if he got massively disproportionate revenge on Xander's behalf... and Xander has to really think about it before reluctantly saying no.
Willow - So you and Spike...
Xander - *immediate incoherent verbal flailing in attempt to offset any suspicions he and Spike are fucking*
Willow - *did not suspect it before but certainly does now*

Spike/Xander: They'd have a facebook status saying "It's complicated"
My personal headcanon? They had a sexual encounter sometime during S4 or S5. Probably before Intervention. I like Spander alright, but not really fluffy romantic Spander. Sex, maybe even hatesex, Spander? Yeah, I enjoy that every once in awhile. Not my fav Spike pairing or Xander pairing, but I do respect it and there's times when I'm like. Just kiss already.

Bingo by ahasbands. Oh, and thank you to Dreamwidth user nyctanthes for prompting me with these ships months ago for a completely different ask game!
The image descriptions are in the captions, I hope.
My mixed feelings re: Spander are that the canon shippiness is so much fun and I genuinely enjoy it, but the way it's written... it doesn't even reach the level of queerbaiting, it's just a running gag. The possibility of it is a punchline in canon. :/ There's a lot of potential there, though. I really haven't read enough Spander fic to see what the ship could be. I adore them as friends (Barbverse recs spill out of my pockets at all times), and I am certain they'd be good for hurt/comfort, but what I ~*~need on my desk by Monday~*~ is a missing scene vignette series where they roommates-with-benefits their way through season 4 and none of the other Scoobies think it's even a remote possibility. (Any recs, anyone?)
Spike and Faith are only terrible in some ways. :) In fact, I'm interested in their softer, less terrible sides. The Faith and Spike series by dutchbuffy opened my eyes to how sweet they can be. I like them as part of a happy polycule that includes Buffy (and maybe even Angel!), but I also like the idea of them cutting out the middleman and appreciating & cherishing each other instead of trying to get Buffy to notice them.
Maybe I'll be more into Buffy and Cordelia's dynamic after the next time I rewatch the high school seasons. People say there's a lot of fun mirroring and mutual understanding going on, but what I remember of its canon expressions doesn't hook me, certainly not in a shippy way. Maybe my problem is that the whole Popular Fashionable Mean Girl role that they have/had in common is (to me) their least relatable and likable side, so I'm not particularly interested in seeing them explore its hidden facets, even though I believe that the depth is there.

Yup. I didn't used to be a big fan of it, saw it as in the way of Spangel. The most I could believe would be that Xander had an unrequited crush on Spike. But after watching BtVS season 5, I really started to actually ship it.
In a similar vein, Spike/Riley. The scene in season 5 where Riley 'stakes' Spike is sexually charged imo, and honestly I love it. I'm still unsure about Angel/Riley, but I do think Riley has a crush on Angel. I don't really ship them, but I do like Angel/Riley when Spike is playing too, by which I mean Angel/Spike/Riley.

JUST THIS ONCE - CH. 2 (18+) E
Xander x Spike
The aftermath of Xander and Spike's... confrontation, how things played out differently in the finale of season 6.

Xander caught himself running his fingers over the fading mark on his neck. A habit which he had formed since the wound had been inflicted upon him.
In moments where his thoughts would get away from him, his fingers would drift up to his neck and slowly circle the now faded pink bite marks. Spike had never reappeared after dumping Xander on the porch of the Summers’ house. Thankfully that gave him the freedom to concoct what ever story he’d liked without having to worry about lining up the details with the vampire. Or worse yet, telling the truth. He’d told his group of concerned friends that a bunch of vampires jumped the pair in the alley and Spike was forgiving enough to save Xander, even after dealing him a few solid blows moments earlier, and leave him somewhere safe.
Buffy wondered why Spike didn’t stick around to make sure that Xander was alright, but when he reminded her of the fight that had broken out mere moments before, she understood.
Unsure why he felt the need to defend Spike, to make him look like the good guy in this story. Xander knew he couldn’t exactly tell the truth. Not now, not like this. It would be too messy, raise too many questions. Mostly it would just make the night’s events real, permanent, like the wound on his neck.
The girls had all been kind enough to back off, believe his story without much question and let him process. Dawn had given him a glass of water and some chocolate when he awoke.
"For the blood loss," she smiled hopefully. "And the comforting factor."
Willow had gently removed his shoes and his jacket from his battered form. Buffy had thrown a blanket over him and Tara was burning some healing incense. They were surprised of course, and a bit confused. Normally, Xander would be pissed, ready to hunt down the vampires who had attacked him. Dismissing Spike even after he had saved his life, excusing his mercy as a way to get to Buffy. But they knew something was off when he seemed distant. He was all mumbles and glassy eyes.
Willow had departed from their circle around the couch to fetch some medical supplies from the bathroom upstairs. As she opened the cabinet under the sink, the front door of the Summers’ home burst open. There was yelling and then… Gunfire. Five shots.
Bang.
Bang.
Bang. Bang.
Bang.
By the time she had reached the bottom of the stairs she caught a glimpse of the familiar black van speeding away. When she turned towards the couch, she saw her friends collapsed into a heap. Blood painting the walls and soaking into the carpet.
What happened next was a flurry of magicks and grief and rage. Jonathan and Andrew had escaped the Witch’s fury but Warren was not so lucky. It was Xander who had managed to pull his childhood friend from the brink.
When he saw the gun, he dove in front of the girls to protect them. The first bullet caught him in the shoulder. Dawn had been hit in the leg, Buffy in the chest and Tara in the stomach.
Willow had seen, thought she had seen, her friends murdered. Her family ripped away from her in an instant. But when Xander had caught up to her, wobbly and with one arm in a sling he talked her down. They’d all be fine. He’d joked about how she needed a bullet wound to match theirs.
Then, Giles had arrived from England unexpectedly. Willow’s outpouring of dark magic had alerted a local coven who had sent him. He took Willow back to that coven with him, kicking himself for leaving them so selfishly. Determined to see the girl regain control.
Tara joined Willow at the coven when she was healed up well enough to travel. She felt responsible for pushing Willow to quit cold turkey instead of helping her regain control. They spent their days with the coven meditating and communing with the Earth. Deepening their understanding of their power.
That left Buffy, Xander and Dawn in Sunnydale to recover and pick up the pieces of their shattered group. Buffy recovered the quickest, of course, mortal wounds and being close to death were no stranger to a Slayer. Especially Buffy.
Xander was almost grateful for the distraction, how it took his mind away from alleys and bleach blond vampires. Nobody had mentioned the night they found him on the porch since. He threw his energy into Dawn and Buffy, fixing up their house, dropping Dawn off to school, patrolling, grocery shopping. What ever he could do, he was always there for them. Though he still had trouble looking Buffy in the eye.
