Carlos responds to an accident scene that threatens to take everything away from him.

“So, what do you think?”

Carlos looked at his partner, eyebrow raised, “What do I think about going on a double date?”

“Yeah.”

“Me and TK, with you and…”

“Alanna,” Mya provided.

“Right, Alanna. Who you have been on...2 dates with?”

“Three, Reyes. Three dates.”

“Uh-huh.”

Mya shot him a glare, “What?”

“I think you’re up to something, Esquilin.”

“What could I possibly be up to?”

“I don’t know, but I have known you long enough to know that you are usually up to something.”

“You,” Mya said with an accusatory finger pointed at her partner, “are too suspicious, Reyes.”

“Mya,” Carlos said firmly, turning to face her, “what possible reason could you have for wanting to take someone you have been on 3 dates with for a double date with a couple that has been together over a year and knows you so well? There’s an ulterior motive here somewhere and I’m just wondering what it is.”

There is silence in their squad car for several moments as Mya seems to consider how best to answer. But the same moment she opened her mouth, their radio chirped to life. Mya seemed to deflate in relief and Carlos studied her for a moment before reaching for the radio, “This is Officer Reyes.”

“Car 142 respond to a vehicular accident, intersection of S 1st and Cumberland. Be advised that witnesses say one of the involved drivers is likely under the influence.”

Carlos shared a grim look with Mya, who flipped on the lightbar and headed in the direction of the accident scene, “10-4 dispatch, car 142 en route.” He replaced the radio and turned to Mya, “we’re finishing this discussion later.”

“Whatever you say, partner.”

“I mean it, Mya.”

“So an accident, think you’ll get to see your better half?”

“You can try and change the subject all you want but I’m not going to forget.”

She raised an eyebrow at him briefly before turning her gaze back to the road and he rolled his eyes, “No, he’s not working tonight. He actually should be at my place by now, he was going to try to make dinner.”

“Did you check to make sure the fire extinguisher was full?”

“And added a second one.”

She laughed, but any humor faded at the sight of the accident scene as they turned the corner.

Carlos felt dread building in his gut as Mya lost any hint of the playful manner of just a second ago, “Shit,” she said instead, voice low as she slowed their car to a stop at the edge of the scene.

There was a car pinned to the telephone pole on the corner of the intersection. The front end looked relatively fine but the back was a mess. It looked like the other vehicle had come through the intersection at high speed, striking the back of the other car and pinning it to the pole. Carlos grimaced as he climbed out of the cruiser and got a better look. Hopefully no one had been in the backseat; they would have to be lucky to have survived that.

And the driver of the other car was standing outside his car looking perfectly fine if a bit intoxicated, of course.

He turned to Mya as she met him outside their car, “Do you want the drunk or the victim?”

“You took the drunk last time so I guess it’s my turn.”

“Let me know if you need me.”

“Please,” she scoffed, “I can handle this dude.”

He shook his head fondly as she rolled her eyes and they jogged off in their separate directions. He reached the driver’s window and leaned in, giving the man a quick once over.

“Sir,” he asked, “are you hurt anywhere?”

The driver shook his head forcefully, “I’m fine, just some cuts and bruises. My passenger though, I’m an uber driver…”

Carlos felt the dread building as his fears were confirmed.

“Okay sir sit tight, I’m going to go around and see if I can get a better look. The fire department should be here soon and they’ll get you out real quick.”

The driver nodded and Carlos gave him a quick, small smile before he headed to the rear window, carefully brushing glass shards out of the way so he could lean in. He was about to ask the same questions, but the sight before him stole the words and his breath from him.

There was someone in the backseat but it wasn’t just anyone. It was a very familiar someone in a familiar yellow hoodie.

“TK?” he asked, voice breaking. He got no response. He tugged on the door desperately but couldn’t get it to budge.

He swallowed before trying again, “Ty? Can you hear me?”

There were a million sounds surrounding him and not one of them mattered. The only one that did matter, the only voice he needed to hear, stayed silent. He couldn’t even get close enough to check for a pulse even as his heart clenched at the very thought of needing to. He knew he had been staring for too long, he needed to keep moving. He needed to do something, anything. He needed to help TK.

He couldn’t lose him — not now, not ever.

With effort, he pulled his gaze away and glanced around. Mya had cuffed the other driver and was loading him into the back of the cruiser. He called out to her, hoping she didn’t notice the change in his voice. Her eyes found him and even from a distance the despair in his expression must have been clear because her expression shifted and she hurried over.

“Carlos, what—”

But he stepped aside so she could see into the car, clutching the roof of the car for support. She took a look inside and he could pinpoint the moment she identified the trapped figure. She turned to him; expression grim and voice soft, “Carlos…”

“We need to get to him,” he said again, hoping his voice was steadier than it sounded to his own ears, “I couldn’t get the door open.”

“Okay,” Mya said calmly, “we’ll try it together. I’ll use the handle, you grab the doorframe. On 3, we pull.”

Carlos nodded and followed her instructions, putting everything he had into it. Finally, after a few tries, the door gave and they were able to wrench it open. Carlos was in the car in a flash, disregarding the shattered glass crunching beneath him as he moved towards TK, reaching for his neck, feeling for a pulse.

Please don’t let him be dead, please.

The thought was repeated like a mantra in his head, over and over again like a desperate prayer.

The moments it took to find the right spot, for him to feel the tell-tale thrum of life in the familiar neck before him seemed to last forever but eventually — finally — he felt it. A pulse; strong and steady.

He released the breath he had been holding and turned to Mya, “he’s alive, pulse is steady.”

The relief evident on his partner’s face was nearly as palpable as his own, “Okay. See if you can wake him up and maybe give him a once over, I’ll go handle the rest of the scene and notify whatever crew shows up. Just stay with him.”

“Are you…”

“Carlos,” she interrupted him, voice firm and leaving no room for argument, “stay with him. He needs you and I can handle the rest on my own.”

He gave her a grateful smile that she returned before squeezing his arm and disappearing back into the chaos of the scene.

Carlos turned back to the crumpled figure beside him. He reached out a tender hand, carefully running it through TK’s hair, looking for any sign of a head injury. His hand found something wet on the side of his head closest to the door and he pulled it away to find blood. He moved closer, careful not to jostle TK any more than necessary, and located the source; a long but relatively shallow laceration on the side of his head.

“How do you keep getting yourself into these situations, babe?” Carlos asked quietly, more to himself than anything else.

“Is he going to be okay?”

Carlos nearly jumped — he had quite forgotten about the driver in the face of what he had found in the backseat. He looked back over at the driver who had managed to twist enough to get a better look at TK’s predicament. Carlos shrugged but pulled his professionalism back over his countenance, “it’s hard to say with him trapped right now. The fact that he’s not conscious isn’t a good sign, but the way he’s trapped it’s too hard to see what might be wrong. I’m just hoping AFD gets here soon.”

The driver nodded before studying Carlos, “You know him, don’t you?”

Carlos gave him a startled look and the driver simply rolled his eyes, “please, I’ve been stuck in this car. I can hear you back there.”

“Yeah, I do.”

“Are you his boyfriend?”

Carlos looked up sharply, never sure how to respond to that. The driver raised his hands in placation, “No judgment, it’s just if you are, he was talking about you right before we crashed.”

Carlos deflated, turning back to TK, “he was?”

“Yeah, said he wanted to surprise you by making a dinner that was actually edible.”

Carlos laughed at that, despite everything, “he’s a man of many talents but unfortunately, I don’t think cooking will ever be one of them.”

“Seems like he likes you a whole lot too,” the driver noted, watching as Carlos ran a hand through TK’s hair.

“That’s good,” Carlos said softly, “because I like him a whole lot too.”

Any further conversation was interrupted by TK stirring. Carlos waited with bated breath, watching him anxiously as he slowly blinked open his eyes. “TK?” he asked softly.

“Carlos?” The word was slurred and quiet, but it was in TK’s voice and Carlos was certain he had never heard anything more beautiful.

“Yeah Ty, I’m here. Can you tell me what hurts?”

TK tried to push himself up but abruptly fell back against the window with a hiss of pain, “Everything?”

Carlos smiles sympathetically, “I believe you, but anything that hurts more than the rest?”

TK considered for a bit before answering, “my head, and my ribs.” He prodded a bit at his chest before wincing, “definitely a few either broken or fractured on the right side.”

Carlos watched as TK placed a hand on his chest as he took a breath, wincing with pain and then letting out a breathy curse. He met Carlos’s anxious expression and explained, “might be flail chest too.”

“Flail chest?”

“When part of the rib cage — usually 3 or more ribs — breaks and becomes detached from the rest of the chest wall.”

Carlos’s eyes widened, “That sounds bad.”

“It’s not ideal,” TK agreed, “but as long as I am careful not to jostle it too much I should be fine until we can get to a hospital, as long as that’s soon. Other than that I’m just kind of one giant bruise.”

“Well, Mya’s in charge so I am sure help will get here soon if she has anything to say about it.”

TK gave him a weak, strained smile before glancing around, “is everyone else okay?”

He looked towards the driver’s seat where the man in question smiled and gave a small wave, “I’m good, just trapped. Mostly worried about you, even more so since you said all that stuff. You a doctor? Med student?”

TK shook his head, “Firefighter.”

“Guess you’re pretty familiar with car accidents then, huh?”

“Yeah, but usually from the other side. I kind of prefer it that way.”

“Can’t say I blame you.”

TK smiled at him before turning back to Carlos, “what about the other driver?”

“He’s feeling no pain and has been escorted to the back of our squad car by Officer Esquilin.”

“Great,” TK deadpanned, “just my luck.”

“Yeah,” Carlos agreed with a sigh, “it kind of is, isn’t it?”

TK smiled at him and then closed his eyes as grimaced in pain, exhaling carefully. Carlos reached out a hand but let it fall, not sure where to touch the other man that would provide comfort and not more pain. Eventually, he opened his eyes and met Carlos’s gaze.

“It hurts,” he admitted, voice low and weak and Carlos’s heart ached to hear it. He reached out again, gently grasping the hand resting at his side and giving it a comforting squeeze, “I’m sure it does, but we’re going to get you out of here. I can hear the fire engine now.”

And not a moment too soon, he thought to himself as the familiar sound of a fire engine approaching cut through the evening.

Outside the car he could hear the flurry of activity as whichever crew had been called arrived and went about the process of gathering gear and getting set up. Carlos stayed by TK’s side the entire time, clasping his hand in his own, “just focus on me,” he told him, “help is on the way.”

He was so focused on TK he didn’t hear the approaching footsteps until they were directly behind him.

“Reyes?”

The voice is familiar but not one Carlos had been expecting to hear. He turned sharply to see Judd Ryder leaning into the backseat.

“Judd?”

“Yeah, we’re going to need you to get out so we can help them. We’ve got it from here.”

“Is the rest of the 126 team here?” he hoped desperately that they were not. As much as their presence would be a comfort and he knows they would move heaven and earth to help TK, it would be far kinder for them to never have to deal with this.

“No, I’m covering for a buddy at the 124. His wife just had a baby so a bunch of us took his shifts for the next few weeks. Still gonna need you to move, kid.”

Carlos swallowed, not sure how to break the news, but he was saved the trouble by TK tuning back into the conversation, “Judd? What’re you doing here?”

Though his voice was weak, it was undeniably TK and Judd froze. He looked at Carlos who shook his head. What was there to say? There was no explanation for this. Judd grimaced and turned his attention back to TK.

“Shit kid, you really got yourself into it this time, didn’t you? Just hold tight brother, we’re gonna get you out of there.”

“Kay,” it was weak, far weaker than it had been a minute ago, and it filled Carlos’s heart with dread.

Judd took a deep, wavering breath before meeting Carlos’s eyes one more time and pulling himself back out of the car, heading back to the captain to report.

“Hang tight Ty,” Carlos told him softly, “this is almost over, I promise.”

“I’m fine Carlos, I’m not worried.”

“You’re a liar, but thanks for trying.”

TK’s answering smile, strained as it was, lifted the slightest amount of pressure from his heart. Two members of the 124 came over to free the driver, who looked back at them before climbing out, “hang in there kid would ya? I’d hate to have ‘dead passenger’ on my record.”

“If I survive this I’ll give you a 5-star review.”

The driver laughed appreciatively before nodding to Carlos and following the firemen away from the scene. Now that there was no other civilian involved, all the focus turned to TK and doing whatever they could to get him out.

Judd appeared at the far edge of the window by TK, “still hanging in there kid?”

But TK didn’t respond, he was too focused on the flurry of activity outside the wrecked car, “wouldn’t it make more sense to approach from the other side so there would be more clearance between the car and the pole?”

“Hey, no backseat rescuing,” Judd chided, “you just relax and let us handle it. Besides, you’re concussed, you don’t know what you’re talking about.”

But even as he spoke he was studying the scene and he stepped away to speak with the young kid who was setting up the equipment. As Carlos watched the kid nodded and gathered his things before moving to the other end of the car. He glanced back at TK, who was grinning, “I was right, wasn’t I?”

Carlos chuckled fondly and shook his head, running his hand through TK’s hair again, “Judd’s right, you just need to focus on keeping still and letting us know if something doesn’t feel right when we get you moving. He’s got the rest of it under control, he’ll make sure things are done to the 126’s standards.”

No more than a few moments later Judd popped back up at the window, “They’re ready to get started and they want you out, Reyes.”

“I’m not going anywhere,” he said firmly, looking back down at TK, who was still clutching his hand like a lifeline.

“That’s what I told them,” Judd agreed, “so just do your best to stay out of the way. Last thing we need is two victims here.”

Carlos nodded and Judd turned to wave to one of the other firemen, who started up the jaws. It was a painstaking process, the car bent and twisted as it was, but eventually, they found the right spot and the door began to give. Carlos turned to smile at TK — they were one step closer to having him free — when he noticed that his face had gone pale.

“Judd!” he called out to the firefighter before reaching out to examine TK, to see if he could find the problem, “something’s wrong!”

He could hear shouting before the noise of the jaws stopped and Judd peered back into the window, expression tight. Carlos was still studying TK.

“Ty,” he asked, “can you tell me what’s wrong?”

TK shook his head but gestured at his chest before trying to take a gulp of air but only ending up with a grimace of pain for his efforts. Carlos realized what he was trying to say in an instant: he was having trouble breathing.

Judd cursed and leaned back out, calling for the paramedics. His eyes met Carlos’s even as he moved, “I think his lung is punctured, we’re going to need to do this quick and dirty now so we can get him out and get him intubated if need be.” He shifted his gaze down to TK, “this is not going to be pleasant brother, but we’re going to get you the help you need ASAP, alright?”

TK nodded at him and squeezed Carlos’s hand harder. Carlos swallowed and squeezed back, desperate to offer whatever comfort he could.

The next minute passed in a blur. Once they had found a gap they used it to wrench the door open as far as it would go before the paramedics approached to get him prepped and out, quickly but carefully. Carlos climbed out after them, able to step over the seat and console that had pinned TK in before, and joined them, hovering right at the edge; unwilling to get in the way, but unable to stray too far. Not when TK was hurt, not when it was like this.

As he hovered, he heard the paramedic captain curse. “It’s a punctured lung,” he confirmed as he pulled the stethoscope away and relayed instructions to his team, “must have happened when the door shifted, causing the ribs to move and hit the lung. Breath sounds are diminishing, we need to get him out of here fast.”

Everything after that was white noise to Carlos as he found an open space on the ground near TK’s head and kneeled, careful to keep out of the way. He saw one of the paramedics turn to him in the corner of his eye, likely intending to tell him to get lost, but Judd appeared at his side and shook his head.

Satisfied he wasn’t about to be forcibly removed with Judd standing sentry behind him, Carlos leaned down, moving closer to TK.

“Hang in there Ty, please. They’re going to get you help, you just need to hang on a little longer, I promise.”

TK’s eyes met his and though they were clouded in pain, there wasn’t any fear in them. As they held each other’s gaze TK slid his hand across the ground, closer to Carlos who grasped it with his own, intertwining their fingers and squeezing it tightly.

“It’s going to be okay,” he repeated but now it was less of a promise and more of a prayer.

TK smiled at him, soft and reassuring, but his eyes began to drift shut.

“No you don’t, stay with me Ty!” Carlos said desperately, the fear that he had been just barely keeping at bay rushing up to engulf him without a second thought. TK’s eyes opened again but Carlos could tell they wouldn’t stay open for long. He leaned closer, lips practically at TK’s ear, “Stay alive,” he begged, “please. I can’t lose you.”

“Breaths are fading,” the paramedic captain announced, “we need to move him now.”

Carlos watched with horror as TK’s eyes slid shut once more and didn’t reopen, no matter how much he pleaded. He watched as the paramedic team scooped him onto a gurney and whisked him to the ambulance, two of them working desperately on CPR as the other rushed around to the driver’s seat.

The ambulance pulled away and Carlos felt as if his very soul had gone with it. He was still here at the accident scene but couldn’t seem to ground himself. He glanced around, taking in all the bits and pieces of the commotion, but most of it just seemed like noise.

He saw Judd speaking to the 124 Captain before stepping to the side and pulling out his phone with a grim expression and somehow Carlos knew just who he was calling. He looked away to see Mya heading towards him, expression cautious.

“Carlos?” she asked, but he knew there was so much more hidden in the two syllables of his name. How are you and how is he and what happened all went unsaid between the two partners.

He didn’t have an answer to any of them, so he just shook his head. She nodded before reaching out her hand to place it gently on his arm, where she gave him a comforting squeeze.

“How about we drop Mr. Inebriated off to be processed and then I’ll get you to the hospital. I’ll call Sarge on the way, let her know.”

Carlos nodded. He knew Mya was worried for him, he knew he should find some way to reassure her, but he had nothing. He felt like a shell; a husk completely cleaned out by the panic and fear and dread that had weighed so heavily on him since he first saw TK in the car. He was drained and the only thing keeping him moving forward was the desperate hope and need for TK to be okay.

If TK was okay, then everything else would be fine.

Carlos looked up from his phone when a figure plopped into the chair across from him, “hi stranger.”

“It’s only been a week,” Carlos objected with a roll of his eyes.

“Yeah and I always get stuck with the weirdos when you’re out. Thank god it’s not often.” There was companionable silence between the two partners as Mya studied him before speaking, “how are you doing?”

“Me? I’m fine.”

“Why do I not believe that?”

Carlos sighed, “It’s been a lot,” he admitted, “and a very long week. But I’m okay, really.”

“I’ve been worried about you,” she admitted, “we all have been.”

Carlos opened his mouth to respond, but the arrival of another person interrupted the conversation.

“Sorry about that,” TK said as he settled back into the seat at Carlos’s side, sliding his phone back into his pocket, “my dad just wanted to check-in. He’s still not convinced I should be allowed to stand up, let alone leave the house.”

“I can’t say I blame him. You really had me worried there for a little bit.”

“Aw Mya, you do care.”

“That is a vicious rumor that I will deny at all costs.”

He laughed and she grinned at him before softening, “how are you feeling?”

“I’m good, really. A little sore and I won’t be running any marathons anytime soon, but fine. Like I keep telling this one,” he says, shooting a pointed look at Carlos, “and my dad.”

Mya shrugs, “I believe you, but I can’t say I blame them. It was pretty close there for a while. Only you could be on the verge of death and back on your feet a week later Strand, I swear.”

“It’s all the practice,” Carlos said dryly, causing Mya to laugh and TK to roll his eyes.

“Judd is talking about bubble wrap,” he tells Mya.

“And we looked into it. It would be pricey, but worth it,” Carlos declared.

“So Mya,” TK said, turning pointedly away from Carlos, who smirked, “who is this girl you are so insistent we meet?”

Carlos shook his head fondly at the change of subject but didn’t push, instead joining TK in looking at Mya intently.

Mya rolled her eyes at the pair of them before taking a sip of her coffee, “Her name is Alanna, and I just wanted to see how you guys got on with her.”

Now Carlos raised an eyebrow and gave her a calculating look, “that sounds like some commitment territory Esquilin, you must really like her.”

“I do,” Mya admitted, “I know we’ve only been on 4 dates so far, but we talk all the time and I just really enjoy being with her in a way I haven’t enjoyed being with anyone else. Plus, you know, other stuff.”

TK and Carlos shared a knowing look and a smile as Mya barreled on, “It just seems really fast so I guess I wanted a second opinion? And to see how she fits in with my friends.”

“We’re your friends?” TK asked with a grin.

“Unfortunately the closet ones I have.”

Now that the topic of Alanna had been broached, not even their usual banter seemed to bring out the playful side of Mya they were accustomed to. She kept biting her lip and tapping her fingers against her mug as she shot repeated glances at the door.

“What are you worried about?” TK asked her eventually.

“I’m not worried,” she responded quickly, to which TK only raised an eyebrow.

“You’re practically a poster child for anxiety at the moment trust me; it takes one to know one. What’s up?”

Mya was quiet for a few moments before she explained, “I like her a lot, but I can’t help but think that maybe we are rushing into things, that maybe we are moving too fast.”

“There’s no one ‘right way’ to start a relationship,” Carlos reminded her gently. “I mean, look at us — you know what a mess we were getting started. We didn’t do anything the way we ‘should have’ but I think we’re pretty solid, right?”

“If by solid you mean, ‘nauseatingly perfect,’ then yeah. You are.”

“Then if you like this girl and she likes you, it doesn’t matter if it seems too fast or how many dates you’ve been on, all that matters is that you care about each other and want to try and start something together.”

The look Carlos was giving Mya was sincere and she gave him a soft smile in return, reaching across the table to squeeze his hand in thanks. She looked to TK a moment later, “You know, you’re pretty lucky to have found this one. Even if he is my partner and I am therefore required to give him shit, he’s pretty great.”

TK turned to look at Carlos, who met his gaze with a matching smile.

“He is something, isn’t he?” he agreed.

Mya smiled at the pair of them, but before she could say anything something behind them caught her attention and her smile grew even wider.

“She’s here,” she told them, rising from her chair, “I’m going to go grab her and get her a drink. Play nice when she gets here, please?”

“As if we could ever do anything but.”

Mya rolled her eyes and swatted lightly at TK’s head as she walked by, heading towards the blonde woman with a warm smile just inside the doorway of the coffee shop.

“Can you believe that was us not too long ago?” TK asked as they watched Mya greet her date with a kiss on the cheek.

Carlos shook his head, “that was never really us. We didn't exactly go about this in the usual way. By the time we got to awkward dates with friends we already knew each other’s friends and each other. Kind of an interesting parallel though — you were on medical leave then too.”

“Is that supposed to be a jab about my ‘danger magnetism’ Reyes?”

“It is. Interesting term, by the way. A TK Strand original?”

“A Judd Ryder one, patent pending.”

“Of course,” Carlos agreed with a nod. His teasing tone faded as he studied TK, reaching out to run a gentle hand across the still healing cut to the side of his head. The stitches had been removed a few days ago, but he knew with painful certainty that underneath TK’s button-up was another row of sutures, a souvenir from the surgery to piece the broken bits of his ribs back together. Soon these would fade just as the scar on his collarbone had and soon they would just be another reminder of what almost was; of the all-consuming fear that they might have lost this, that Carlos could have lost him.

“What are you thinking?” TK asked him softly, studying Carlos’s expression.

“How much trouble you are.”

“Is that so?”

“It is, but you’re worth it.”

TK’s face broke out into a wide and beaming grin, “Oh really?”

“Yeah,” Carlos agreed, “you’re worth everything to me.”

Murder for One - One Shot

Summary: They found their way back to where the nightmare began. The Oswell E Spencer mansion. But things took a wrong turn. Chris has been murdered. And it’s up to the gang to track down his murderer.

A/N: I wanted to write a short murder mystery but I kept emphasising a lot of things so it turned out a bit longer than I’ve intended. Also been rewatching Twin Peaks so I was kinda inspired by it.

11:55 pm, June 14th, Oswell E Spencer's mansion.

A moonless night, just like many of the others, is a deadly premonition. BANG! The thunder roared and the split of lightning flashed that lit up the rustic library in a blink of an eye, then shrouded by darkness once more. The only light source is the lone fireplace, located on the far side of the room. The firewood crackled.

Chris is dead.

Nobody came in or out of this mansion. Except for our four little suspects: Leon S Kennedy, an American Agent working under the government; Jill Valentine, former S.T.A.R.S member and current Special Ops Agent in the BSAA; Claire Redfield, a member of TerraSave; Carlos Oliveira, former UBCS and mercenary. The four stood looking down at the corpse, the light behind their eyes extinguished along with the life of their former friend.

2 hours earlier:

Chris was sent out by HQ to investigate further about a new strain of the virus being created in the Spencer's mansion. Of course, this was all tipped by an anonymous caller. HQ should've known better. This mission was a quick data retrieval, but the rest of the group got worried when Chris hasn't returned after an hour has passed. As soon as they've received the news, the four of them came rushing to the scene of the crime. Inside, they found Chris lying cold on the oak wood flooring. Upon further investigation, they can pinpoint that Chris: took a hard blow to the head, visible strangle marks around his neck and several stab wounds in the general area of the torso. All of these could be the fatal cause of Chris's death. There was no sign of intruders or breaking of any locks which means, the killer's only access is the front door.

"Who could've done such a thing?" Claire sniffles.

"I'll contact HQ and see if we could get some back-up and analysis going." Leon tampers with his phone. "Shit, can't get a signal here."

Jill took a quick glance at Claire then focused on Chris's lifeless body, she sighs. "This isn't right. There's no blood around the corpse." she contemplates for a moment. "...which means, the murdering didn't happen in this room. Alright, let spread out and see what we can find." They nod, each set off in different directions. Claire and Carlos scout the ground floor while Leon and Jill tread lightly along the first floor. Strong wind clatter the decade-old windows and echos through the hallway, making a ghastly sound. Jill swallows. Mansions give her the creeps and often unfond memories. The upper hallway split into three separate doorways; one lead to a bathroom, another is a decorated study and lastly is the dust-coated master bedroom.

"I'll go check out the study." Leon declared, she gave an approving nod and both head on to their chosen destination, flashlight in hand. The doorknob is rusted, giving it several twists then it groaned open. The bedroom is grim with a dampened smell, furniture covered in white sheets. If this doesn't scream creepy, Jill ain't sure what else would. The beam of light continues to shine on showing nothing out of the ordinary. Suddenly, torch caught something reflective, just shying away behind the edge of the bed frame. Jill grasp the object for a closer inspection to reveal a candle holder, decaying away with time. Bingo! Bloodstains. The red liquid also seeped along the skirt of the white covers. Is this...the scene of the crime?

"Jill!" Leon cries out in distress.

The murder weapon clanked against the wooden floor. Jill sprinted in full speed towards the study only to find Leon hunched over the rows of bookshelves.

"Are you okay? Did you hurt yourself?" she pants.

"Come take a look at this." he reaches out his hand.

Jill frowns. "But this is Chris's knife...Why would it be here?"

"This could be where Chris got murdered. Look, there's blood splatter across here." The crimson fluid trailed its way near the bookcase. "This can't be right...if this is the murder weapon... Wait!" Jill turned on her heels and marched farther along the hallway. She managed to pry open the last door which unveiled the unkempt bathroom, the scene mirrors the other rooms. "As I thought."

"But...this doesn't make any sense." Leon's face scrunched upon looking at its interior. The third murder weapon. A rope loosely hanging from the shower curtain rail, blood tainted the hemp thread. Must be caused by the friction against Chris's skin which broke the outer layer of the tissue.

"Leon! Jill!" Carlos's voice roared halfway across the place.

They both gave a knowing look to one another before heading off to the foyer. Claire and Carlos stood with an unsettling look on their faces.

"I think...we've found what may have killed Chris..." they both pulled out a blood-stained object. A kitchen knife and a porcelain vase. Sadness filled their eyes as they both averted their gaze away from the weapons.

"No...it's impossible. This getting more confusing by the minute." Leon huffed, pinching the bridge of his nose.

"What do you mean? These two must be the murder weapon. The bloodstains can't lie." Claire frustrates over Leon's remarks and stood her ground.

"We found more objects like this upstairs, stained with blood, each in different rooms," Leon explains.

Jill sighs, rubbing her temple with her index finger. "Let's just...go back to the library and calmly figure this out."

"Maybe if we reenact it out, we can decode this mystery." an idea struck Carlos. Leon pats his arm before shuffling back to along the route to the library.

The temperature hasn't changed at all since they left, still cold and bitter. Chris, still laying as dead as ever, being kept warm by the fireplace. Something caught Jill's eye, an envelope, seated on top of the mantelpiece with words written in cursive. 'Open me, when the truth is revealed'. She turns the letter over. But, there were no names or any seal marks.

"Hey, was this here before?" her voice sounded quizzical.

Carlos frowns, "I don't think so...Why? What's the matter?"

Jill shakes her head. "No, it doesn't matter. Let's just focus the matter at hand right now."

The grandfather clock chimed and made the group jump. 1 am...it's been 4 hours since Chris's death, but they aren't getting any closer to catching the killer. Jill starts picking at her fingers.

"Something's off...Nobody else knows Chris is here, except us. This was a solo mission. So that means...one of us did it." Jill said, out of speculation. She's never wrong about a hunch, even if that deduction was a bold one.

"Wait, what do you mean one of us? All of us have an alibi. We were with each other for the past few hours." the sound of Leon's voice warns her that she's treading on thin ice.

"Yes, but there's a two-hour window when the murder happened. And neither one of us has proof of our alibi in the time gap."

Tension is rising in the room. Indeed, this is a huge accusation. But Jill can't just stand aside and let the murderer walk free with bloodshed on their hands, let alone with her best friends blood.

"I have an alibi," Claire spoke out. "I was stuck on the highway on my way to Chris's place and I stopped by Krispy Kreme too."

"Well, I shared a ride with Jill this whole time. She'd know if I went missing for even a split second. And before that, I was with a friend. They can prove it." Carlos raised his hand.

"Leon?" Claire asks.

Leon mumbled quietly. None of his words was audible. "You're gonna have to speak up." He let out a huge sigh. "I said, I was at the bar. Just trying to get drunk. There. Ya happy now?"

Something still doesn't feel right. Jill knew that deep down, one of them is lying. "No. This isn't it."

"What do you mean 'this isn't it'? We all have an alibi, so it's not us." Carlos grunts.

"What about you Jill? Where were you before meeting up with Carlos?" Claire's words pressed up against Jill.

"I was working overtime, finishing off some paperwork at the office."

"Was there anyone else at the office with you?"

"No...no there wasn't. Everyone already left for the day and I was the only one." Jill bites her lip.

"Oh, God. D-did you...did you kill my brother? But why? I thought you two went through everything together!" tears start spilling down Claire's cheeks.

"No! It's not me! What reason have I got for me to kill Chris? He's my best friend. What will I gain from that?!" Jill's stomach churns, even she's starting to doubt herself. Wait a minute…

Leon wraps his arms around Claire's shoulders to comfort her emotions, his head trying to get around the words that he just heard, but his feelings are numbed at this moment.

A snicker reverberates the empty library. The lightning stopped about an hour ago, silence fills the air around them. Gradually, the snicker became a period of giggles.

"Y'know, you almost had me fooled. All this time, I thought something doesn't feel quite right. Why all the different murder weapons? And why spread them apart in the mansion? I couldn't figure it out...Even I've started to doubt myself, maybe I had a hand in pushing Chris's death. But I soon realise, all that gibberish was just a smokescreen!" She picks up the envelope and peeks at its content. "As I thought exactly. The truth."

The three of them looked at Jill with a quizzical look painted on their faces.

"Yes, they are all murder weapons. They did play a part in Chris's death, but they were only induced AFTER he got murdered!" she waltzes towards Leon, holding out a hand. "Leon, if you please." His brain whirred for a moment before he knew what Jill was talking about. He placed the object in her hand per her request.

"This is the true murder weapon." Jill presented Chris's combat knife. " The actual weapon that caused the fatal blow. Isn't that right, Claire?"

Claire's eyes widen in horror. "Are you out of your mind?! How could I have killed my own brother? I have an alibi."

Carlos exhaled. "She's right. It couldn't be her."

Jill cackled. "That's what I thought at first. But, something you said made me reconsider. 'The bloodstains can't lie'. Why are you so sure about that? You and Carlos only searched the lower part of the mansion, so why are you so sure that there were bloodstains on EVERY object when we only took the vital one?"

Claire kept her head down, looking at her feet, her shoulders shivering.

"As for the alibi, I have solid proof that you did it." Jill grins. "You said you were stuck on the highway. You weren't wrong. Travelling from your apartment to Chris's will require you to take a long journey, the only way is to drive on the highway. But! From your apartment to the mansion, you do not need to get on the highway. And the mansion to Chris's place is only a short drive so you have enough time to murder Chris, plan all the objects and the bloodstains and you still have time to spare. Of course, if somebody was to kill Chris, he would immediately defeat them without breaking a sweat. But what if that person knows him well and is someone he trusts wholeheartedly? Then, the circumstance would be much different." Jill takes a deep breath. "You've planned everything perfectly but you've missed the most important and intricate detail."

"And what is that?" she asks.

"The bookcase. When Chris was looking through the documents, you killed him there and then, using his own knife. Everything in that room was built with glazed wood so the cleaning up shouldn’t have taken so long. But, you forgot about the bookcase. Specks of blood were left on the hinges." she exhales. "Oh! And there's a new Krispy Kreme that just opened two blocks away from his place. I know because he took me there last week."

Claire's sniffing stopped. Her gaze remained on the ground. A soft hum came out of her mouth, slowly it turned into a giggle and lead to a burst of bellowing laughter.

"Well, colour me impressed. So what if I killed my own brother, hm?" She skipped her way toward his corpse. "The killing was quick. But the cleaning up! That took a whole hour!"

"You're sick. That's your brother."

"And what about it? Maybe he should have done what I told him not to do. Maybe then, he'd still be alive. Who told him to eat the last chicken nugget? It was mine! But he didn't listen to me. HE SHOULD HAVE LISTENED!"

"THAT'S ENOUGH!" A voice boomed as the door opens.

"Chris???" They said in unison.

Chris stare at them and sigh. The group sitting gathered around the coffee table in Chris's new apartment playing Cluedo at 1 in the morning. Jill and Claire having a go at each other's throats, Carlos sitting comfortably watching as this goes down and Leon's been on his phone for the past 5 minutes.

"But it was just getting good. We've just revealed who murdered you." Claire gave him the sad puppy eyes.

"Why am I the one getting murdered? Can't you use the default characters?" Chris frowns. "Also, do you want me to get kicked out again? This is my housewarming party and I don't want to receive any noise complaint as a housewarming gift. Now, tidy up. The pizzas' getting cold."

The four of them obeyed his command obediently, setting up the table for the awaited pizzas. Claire waltz her way towards the kitchen, just next to the dining table. "Hey! Who ate the last doughnut?"

Chris's face drained to a pale shade of gray. Discreetly, he backed out of the room, tip-toeing stealthily. Fist clenched as Claire raged. "CHRIS!"

Jill finally has a chance to leave for Europe. However, she meets unexpected person on the plane.

This time it’s not dirty fanfic. Just Jill and Nicholai hate-talking each other.

Flying Off

First months after Raccoon City Jill Valentine went through series of tests, interrogations and long period of sleepless nights. Carlos was good backup during these tiring times, but her plan stayed the same since day one. At the first possible time gather up all the evidence and run to Europe – it’s far enough from Umbrella’s influence and most importantly the place where Chris is already waiting working on taking the corporation down. She knew that together they can put an end to this chaos.

At the moments like this, when her memories jogged back to those late September days, she regretted a lot. Most of the evidence of Umbrella’s research burned together with her apartment. Anything else turned to ashes after the city was wiped out. The one viable source of information she left there to die. All that was left was broken vial from the antivirus she kept secret from the government.

The same vial now hidden as she sat down in the plane finally leaving this continent. Running to Chris. Undercover, with hope that nobody is following her. She didn’t trust anyone back there. Any scientist, lawyer, police officer, general, politician – they all could have been in Umbrella’s pocket. She will pick her own scientist to check if there are any traces of antivirus left. There was already a young rookie scientist on her mind.

The plane took off, once in the air she sighed in relief. The clouds outside seemed so peaceful and watching them just flow in the air was relaxing. It felt as if she left the hell behind and went towards something better now. Others were waiting. As if the all heaviness fell off her shoulders, she closed her eyes and let herself rest.

Heavy body falling next to her shook her awake. She felt a pressure down her ribs that forced her back to her seat. The tip of a knife was touching her side.

“It’s been long time, hasn’t it, Miss Valentine?”

She must have been dreaming. Nicholai was sitting next to her with all knowing smirk on his face. But he died. Raccoon City took him with a blast. She left him there on the airport to eat his sins. Fuck!

“I wouldn’t do that.” The pain in her side stopped her. She was ready to punch his neck. Attack first, ask questions later, but she recalculated. It looked like nobody has noticed this little theatre. Focus, Jill. Nicholai’s hand was hidden under a jacket he threw over it like a blanket. He was here alone; nobody knew about his little endeavour.

Plain clothes, like any other traveller. Just strong arms showing under the t-shirt gave away that he might be a soldier.

“Surprised to see me?” The shit-eating grin showed how much he enjoyed this situation.

“I am used to bastards not dying when you want them to,” she replied coldly. “It’s hard to kill cockroaches.”

Puff of air came of his mouth in short laughter. “Give me the vial, miss Valentine, and I will leave you unharmed.”

“Or what? You will kill me here in front of all those people?” she smirked. “I don’t think so.”

“I’m a patient man. I can sit for hours and wait for the plane to land. Everyone will leave and then in one fast stab you will be no more.” He wasn’t bluffing, he whispered to her with resolution as if taking someone’s life was everyday deal for him. Let’s face it, it probably was. He wasn’t afraid to sacrifice his co-workers for money. His hands were covered in blood. “Or you might think of asking for help, screaming. Do you know how far we are? Not enough, the closest airport is back there in States. In the case of emergency landing, they will have to turn it around and you will be back there, with Umbrella waiting for you.”

Jill tried to stay calm. Calculating this situation wasn’t in her favour. She needed to play it smart. The flight was long.

“Everything in order?”

Jill looked up at the flying attendant smiling at them.

“Yes, thank you,” Nicholai shunned her.

“Actually,” Jill said at the same time and leaned towards the flying attendant. The knife grazed her side. “I would love some coffee.”

“Milk or sugar?”

“Black, please.”

Carefully she took the coffee and brought it just so close in front of Nicholai’s face to her side of the seats. He stopped breathing for a short second and Jill took it as a little victory. Back in Raccoon City she showed him she can be ruthless just like him. The thought of spilling the hot liquid on him crossed her mind but causing fight on the flight wouldn’t be worth it.

However, she wasn’t finished with dismissing Nicholai’s threats.

“Thank you, you are a sweetheart,” she said to the flying attendant and shot her a smile. She smiled back and went to attend others. Jill took a sip of the coffee; hot liquid burned the tip of her tongue.

“I don’t think I caught what you want,” she finally turned her attention back to Nicholai.

“The vial with the antivirus.”

“You mean the antivirus you destroyed?” annoyance entered her voice. She gulped the coffee just to get hold of herself, but that scene kept coming back to her. They could have saved the city, they would have means to fight any other possible outbreak and this son-of-a-bitch took it away from them.

“Umbrella wants all the evidence gone.”

“I don’t have it.”

He smiled again – showing his teeth, looking like a wild animal ready to jump at her neck. Jill tried to find some information about this guy, all she got was hearsay and fantastic stories. And a nickname – Silver wolf. Just like a wolf he could sink his teeth into her flesh. Let him choke.

“Don’t lie to me, miss Valentine.”

“Check for yourself.” She nodded towards the overhead shelf with her bag.

“I already did when you were taking your little nap.”

“Then you know I don’t have it.”

He rested his elbow on the armrest between them and leaned closer. His breath smelled of coffee and mint, very different from back in Raccoon where everything smelled like blood and sweat. She felt it on her skin, she just kept drinking avoiding eye contact.

“You are not stupid; you are bringing it to Europe. You either have it on your person or in the luggage.”

“You are right, I am not stupid. I am not telling you shit. Now, if you’ll excuse me.” In one swift movement – and she deserved slight pinch in her side – she took out a book out of her handbag. Then she threw the bag into Nicholai’s lap. “Suit yourself.”

Nicholai watched her, baring his teeth. She just turned the pages focused on the text. As if he was nothing but a little annoyance. Not a wolf but a fly, buzzing but harming no-one. No threat, no pack.

After short check he threw the handbag under her feet. “Listen-“ he started but raised finger stopped him. Jill finished a paragraph and looked at him over the cover.

“Do you have something important to say?”

“The vial-“

“That conversation is over. Now, I want to finish this book before I am stabbed to death, thank you very much.”

There was a silence for maybe five pages. Tip of the knife scratched her ribs as she was breathing, she tried to not pay attention to it, but felt droplets of blood running on her side.

“I see you like to play games.” His voice sounded so close, she flinched. Nicholai was leaning right to her ear. “Just like you did in that train.”

The train. She almost forgot – it was heat of the moment, way to release stress from the situation they were in. Constantly followed, hurt, all she wanted was to forget for a second about Nemesis looking for her and the giant target on her back. She didn’t trust him then, but it was before he turned out to be greedy bastard.

The sex was good, but nothing to keep in memory.

She turned a page. Nicholai boasted about his patience, but her indifference apparently drove him mad. Maybe he was used to people bargaining or trying to talk their way out of this. Or maybe he was projecting because he sure loved to hear himself talk.

“I wonder why is Umbrella so afraid of you. You weren’t even brave enough to shoot me.”

With a sigh she closed the book. “You are right, I could’ve shot you back in Raccoon City. But seeing you beg for your life was much more entertaining.” She hit the spot. If the hatred had physical manifestation it would be Nicholai right now. Grinning, she continued to poke his nerve. “What a strong ruthless man you are, begging for your life like a baby. I will pay you anything, let me go with you, miss Valentine,” she mocked.

“Don’t play with me.”

“You said it yourself, I love to play games. Let’s play this one. You want the vial? Beg for it.”

Facing each other so close Nicholai became only thing in her field of vision. Jaw clenched in anger, his eyes spiking through her. His Adam’s apple rose as he swallowed.

“You forgot who has the knife,” Nicholai hissed.

“I see.” Back to the book it was. Even without looking at him the mood changed fast. The frustration hanged in the air with familiar smell of sweat, anger and cheap cologne. If felt like blood rushing on her side, ashes in her mouth from the Raccoon City and pain. The knife meant nothing, the memory meant nothing, the anger couldn’t get her to cooperate. She knew that and Nicholai knew that too.

“It seems I underestimated the situation again. You cooperate much better when someone your love is on the line.” Fear joined the emotional party in her, but she shunned it – Nicholai had nothing. He was just trying to get reaction out of her. “I guess I will have to use the old good methods.”

The knife moved. It didn’t cut, just slid on her skin, from her side towards centre of her chest. He rested it there for a while, she felt the blade against her heart. It stung her every time she breathed in. Jill clenched her teeth.

“Still nothing?”

“I still didn’t hear you say please.”

It took second. Nicholai pushed on the knife. Jill grabbed his wristed and yanked the hand away. She felt the blade cutting her slightly. She twisted his wrist, the knife fell on the ground. Nicholai attacked her, his elbow hit her temple. The force sent her to the window, where she hit her head again. Pain spiked through her skull, but it was nothing next to what Nemesis did to her in Raccoon City. She kicked the knife, it slid under next set of seats and disappeared from her sight.

At the same time Nicholai tried to grab for the knife. She caught his arm and forced him back to the seat. He pushed against her but stopped.

“Everything okay?” asked the flight attendant who walked to them.

Jill put on the most charming smile. “Yes, everything is perfect.”

“You have something on your shirt.”

Jill looked down. Where Nicholai cut her, the shirt got stuck to her skin and bloody. She grabbed his jacket and dressed herself to hide the blood. “Hot dog accident at the airport, I am clumsy.”

The flight attendant wasn’t very convinced of their play.

“I am sorry for disturbing the flight. It will never happen again, right, Nicholai?” Jill turned to her foe. He smiled too, more annoyed grimace than anything else.

“Right. Apologies.”

The flight attendant left them alone. Jill watched after her, she saw her talking to others and pointing their way. “If they turn the flight because of you, I will kill you,” she hissed at Nicholai.

“Suits me just fine.”

“So, are they paying you to get the vile or kill me too?”

“No, you are more worth alive. You can bring them to others to get rid of you one by one,” Nicholai answered.

“You’ve been stalking me. That’s how you know about the vile.”

“Of course. You took it out of Raccoon city. Then you never handed it in. I knew you had to have it.”

Jill raised her eyebrows. “You were the only one who knew about it. Nobody else knew anything about me bringing it along. You told Umbrella so they send you after me. You did this on purpose.”

“Every little detail means a lot more dollars.”

“And you got this job by accident,” she said mockingly.

“Oh no, I wanted to see you again.” The tone in what he said it bit morrow in her bones. So cold, but it missed the hatred she’d expect after everything. Nicholai was looking her over, she felt similar feeling she did back in the train. He was good looking, she had to give him that. And his strong arms…

She had to grin at herself for thinking like that. “To get revenge.”

“To get anything. And the vial.”

Jill shook her head. Why was she the type people will stalk? First the monster, now him. In a way, it felt great. When it didn’t steal her sleep, when it didn’t endanger her life, when it didn’t destroy chances of the whole city to live – then it felt great to be wanted. Negatives just outweighed the positives too much. And it made her feel guilty when she caught only positives for a brief moment.

No, she is not doing him any favours. But she still wanted to see him dumbfounded.

“The vial. Is that really only thing you will talk about? Okay, I will tell you where is the vile. My conditions haven’t changed. Say please.”

“You are ridiculous,” he scoffed.

She leaned to him again looking him straight in the eyes. “Maybe. I just really want to see you desperate again. Come on. It’s a lot of money for a simple word.”

Nicholas tilted his head on a side and looked somewhere behind her. He scoffed again, fighting with himself over a stupid word. Jill’s smile grew wider, soon she was grinning, teeth out, his struggle was entertaining to watch.

“Alright,” he finally looked at her. “Please, miss Valentine, will you tell me about the vial.” Poison was dripping from every word. Jill chuckled and leaned right next to his ear, her lips touched his skin for a brief second.

“It’s not here.”

“What?” he hissed.

“You said it yourself, you knew my every step. And I knew Umbrella was following me. I never boarder the plane with the vile.”

Nicholas frowned; Jill kept smiling.

“It’s already in Europe, I send it via post, undercover, long time ago. If Umbrella didn’t catch the package, you will never get your hands on the vial.”

Nicholas sighed and got up. “Then I have no business with you.”

“Oh, not gonna kill me?”

He shrugged. “You lost my knife. The jacket, please.”

Jill already had her book open again. “No, that’s mine now, you ruined my shirt.”

Nicholas shifted his weight. “I will be back for it.”

“I’ll be waiting.”

She watched him over the pages. He left to the front of the plane and she lost him. The smile stayed on her face, this interaction made her unexpectedly cheery. Yeah, hearing Nicholas humiliate himself again was great.

Like a ghost he disappeared. She didn’t see him for the rest of the flight, nor on the airport. Only thing left of him was faint smell of his cologne on the jacket.

‘Know Your Strengths’: Leadership Lessons From A Real Estate Entrepreneur

Diane M. Ramirez, chairman and CEO of Halstead, is known for her passion and devotion to the residential real estate industry. She is a 35-year veteran who started her career in Palm Beach, Florida where she worked as an agent for a number of years before returning to her hometown—New York City—and embarking on a successful and rewarding career.

Together with Clark Halstead, she helped found Halstead in the fall of 1984. Their vision for the company was a high-end firm that utilized advanced technology combined with old fashioned elegance that covered all segments of the market and was located in the communities that they serviced. Due to their vision, Halstead became the first big firm to utilize storefront offices in Manhattan as well as the first to be on the West Side and in Downtown.

Under her leadership, Mrs. Ramirez has strategically grown the firm from its original goal of three storefront offices in some of the most important communities in Manhattan to its current size of 22 offices with nearly 950 agents throughout the tri-state area.

I had a chance to interview Diane recently and learn more about her and what drives her.

Jill Griffin: Where did you grow up? Describe your early childhood and its significance on your life.

Diane Ramirez: I grew up in a middle-class family in Jackson Heights, Queens. I have two older brothers, but am the oldest daughter, which led to my taking on a lot of responsibilities at a young age. Growing up with four siblings, I learned how to deal with people, how to diffuse a situation, and how to get your voice heard. It was truly a wonderful way to grow up, surrounded by love and support, but also challenged me to navigate how to make my own way in the family.

Griffin: When did you first get the whisper that you belonged in business?

Ramirez: I can’t remember a time in my life when I did not already know that I wanted to be in business. This is owed immensely to my father and the strong influence he had on my life. He made me feel like I could do anything, including being successful in the business world. My background was in marketing and advertising and I put my career on pause when I married young and had children. I was happy to focus on my family, though my strong desire to work in business never died down. I knew that unless I wanted to wait until my children were grown, I needed to pursue a career with flexible hours.

I was living in Florida at the time when it hit me—real estate. The hours seemed flexible, I had already bought and sold a couple of properties, and I loved the close interaction with people. I began working in real estate in Florida, before we decided to move back to New York City where I got my real estate license. I liked real estate in Florida and I loved real estate in New York.

Griffin: Was there an early teacher that inspired you? Who and how?

Ramirez: I had some wonderful teachers in my life but it was my family that inspired me the most. My dad gave me a sense of confidence and real belief in myself. He passed away when I was just a teenager, having instilled in me that he felt I could accomplish anything I put my mind to. It wasn’t this false sense of flattery, but rather a true belief in my potential that I then took on in my own persona. There is nothing I look at now that I do not feel I can do, even when faced with challenges. If I didn’t believe I could do it, I would never have taken some of the risks in my career that have brought me here—and that definitely came from my father.

Griffin: What’s a great piece of business or life advice you received, who gave it to you, and how has it enhanced your life?

Ramirez: There are two people whose advice has enhanced my life. My husband taught me to treat everyone with the utmost respect. He always treated everyone he encountered in business with such incredible regard. I knew that was a beautiful trait, one that I hope was in me anyway but watching his interactions with people definitely shaped how I look at people in life.

My business partner and cofounder of Halstead, Clark Halstead, taught me to always look to the horizon and never lose sight of the bigger picture. He was always a visionary thinker, and I always thought of myself as the meat and potatoes in the relationship – I crossed my t’s and dotted my i’s. Working alongside him, I developed a visionary sense of thinking as well, which is something I needed to grow and enhance Halstead to where it is today.

Griffin: Please give me the top three bullet points in your personal leadership credo.

Ramirez:

Know your strengths. Embracing who you are will allow your authenticity to shine.

Say what you’ll do and do what you say. Following through on your word is one of the most important things you can do for building foundations of mutual trust.

Failures are not fatal unless you don’t have the courage to continue your journey. If you look deep down, you will have it in you to keep going.

Griffin: Describe a painful setback in your life and what it taught you.

Ramirez: I feel blessed that I haven’t had a lot of setbacks in my life. My most painful setback was losing my father unexpectedly, at a time in my life when I thought I had my future all planned out. It did turn my life upside down – as it was sudden, he had been the one providing for our family, and I was the oldest one at home. The well-planned vision I had for myself as a teenager had to be rearranged and I had to be there for my mother and younger siblings. It was devastating at the time but I did make lemonade out of it. I didn’t take the road I thought I would but when I look back at my life, it was beautiful and just the way it was supposed to be. Facing tragedy at a young age has ultimately served me well, as I’ve been able to embrace challenges in life.

Griffin: What advice do you have for young, talented, ambitious women who want to rise?

Ramirez: Be the best you can be, and always work hard. When people see that you are working hard, that your work ethics are there and you’re a team player, it will not go unnoticed. Often, younger people want to shine right away, but remember that collaborating, working as a team and working hard does bubble to the top.

I am often in male-dominated situations, and the main thing that I do is to approach the situation as a talented person who is meant to be there. Not as a female, not as a male, just as a person — a bright, intelligent person who has something valuable to add. You are there because you have the talent to be there.

How are you feeling? How are you getting through this messy time? In the cosmos now we're dealing with Mercury Retrograde and 7 other planets in retrograde AND a lunar eclipse/full moon and you know what that alone can do to throw you out of whack. Know that this too shall pass and I am saying a prayer now that things can and will move into your favor here and now. What about hitchhikers? Several times this week I woke up and tested that I had other “hitchhikers” in me and my cat. WTH? That is something I am checking in with much more often these days and you should too and here's how. So if you’re feeling sad, lonely, scared or mad, it’s probably NOT even you. Get clear to yes, unclear to no and running forward. Then make the statement, "There is only me in this body." If you get a NO, you have hitchhikers on board. Then fish them OUT until it tests YES to "There is only me/my being in this body now connected to the most high God."

Modern Farmhouse with Blue Exterior

Undoubtedly, modern farmhouse is by far the most popular home style these days. We have seen many modern farmhouses with white exteriors, Joanna Gaines-inspired farmhouses, new-construction modern farmhouses, board and batten modern farmhouses and more recently, a modern farmhouse with black and white interiors, but a modern farmhouse with blue exterior is something new to me, and, just between you and I, it feels very refreshing!

This is the kind of home that makes you turn your head if you’re walking by! What a curb-appeal!!!

The home combines shingle roof and metal roof. This is a very popular combination for modern farmhouses.

One of my favorite things about this home, besides the stunning architectural details, is the custom “barn door-inspired” shutters.

Numbers 16:41-18:32, Mark 16:1-20, Psalms 55:1-23, Proverbs 11:7

Today is the 12th day of March. Welcome to the Daily Audio Bible. I am Brian. It is great to be here with you. And we have marched our way to the 12th day of this month. And we will march right into it, picking up where we left off yesterday. The children of Israel have had to turn around and go back out into the wilderness and an entire generation is basically going to die out so that the children can rise up and see if they can take the Promised Land, which is causing an incredible amount of unrest. And, so, we're seeing quite a bit of drama. And, so, we move back in. Numbers chapter 16 verse 41 through 18 verse 32 today.

Commentary:

Okay. So, today in the Gospel of Mark we experienced the resurrection and we also concluded the Gospel of Mark today. So, we'll be starting fresh with the Gospel of Luke tomorrow. And the story of the resurrection, that is our ultimate source of hope. Like, everything we believe as Christians hinge upon this, that Jesus was victorious over sin and death. All of the forces of evil at work in the world. He was victorious. And His resurrection was a rebirth, as we’ll find in the writings of the Apostle Paul, that Jesus was the firstborn into this new family of God that began with Jesus. And, so, through Christ, we no longer have this separation between man and God. Through Jesus we are restored to God and become grafted in or a part of his family. And this is our hope. And this is what gives us hope, that while we were still enemies of God He came and sacrificed Himself on our behalf, restoring us to Him, inviting us into fellowship, inviting us to become a part of His family. We are a part of the family of God. May we revel in that today. And may hope arise in us.

Prayer:

Jesus, thank You is the words. Those are the words. But they fall so flat and so short. What we could never do, ever, for eternity, You have done and invited us to participate fully and completely in relationship with You. And, so, we thank you for your sacrifice. We worship You for Your victory over death and hell and the grave and everything set against us. Come, Holy Spirit. May we never be deceived away from this. May we remain true. As we remain true, we always have hope. Our hope is in You and You alone. And we thank You, Jesus, for coming for us and rescuing us. And may our lives be the example of that gratefulness. We pray in Your name. Amen.

My brother-in-law is in the Army and he’s part of the skydiving team and he was recently in California with the Army and we learned yesterday that he had a very serious car accident and he’s now in hospital in California on life support. My wife and my sister-in-law left very early this morning and are now on their way to California to be with him. The situation is unclear at the moment, but we’re believing, you know, that God can do anything. Until that final breath God has his life in his hands. His name’s Aaron. And, yeah, he’s in California in hospital. My church is praying. Churches from all over the US are praying. And I just ask you to join with us and pray for healing, pray for recovery, pray for mercy upon his life in the name of Jesus. Thank you, brothers and sisters. Amen.

Hello family this is pastor Gene from Bradenton Florida. And I wanted to say a quick testimony __. And as you guys know I went recently to a very trying couple of months and I ended up being hospitalize three times. The first time planned the two next times completely unplanned. And around a month and half, a month and one week ago, I was in my third hospital. And I was in such agony, pretty much throwing up air, because I had nothing left to throw up and pain, inflammation and the doctors not doing a whole lot for me. And I was in __ but I had such an unexplainable peace in my heart that I felt that if this was death I was ready to go to the Lord. And I told Him, I said Lord, I’m a little concerned about __ Victoria and JC and John but I know that You will take care of them after I’m gone from this world. And I love you with all of my heart. And I can’t think of anything else that I want to do more right now than be in your presence. And the Lord obviously said no, but I want to talk about that perfect peace that fills me and fills me with hope although __ I was completely failing and that peace that allowed me to completely surrender into the hands of the Savior, trusting Him to take my life and do with it as he pleases. And I hope that that peace can be with you as you need it will be with you. I love you family. This is pastor Gene from Bradenton Florida. Bye.

Hello family. And as __ says, Holy Spirit let’s roll. It’s the 9th. And I have to tell you, I was on my way to work listening to the Daily Audio Bible this morning but the flesh is weak. And on my way to work I had this guy that was purposely hitting his breaks and trying to control my car from the front on a narrow road going through the hills to get to my work. And it was really frustrating me. So, at just the perfect time the flesh was weak I passed him, crossed the double yellow line only to get a wave from a motorcycle officer, a nice cop who let me go because I pulled to the side of the road thinking I’m going to get a $500 ticket. But I’m calling because Brian your commentary on the 9th is dead on. The spirit is willing but unless we’re in the spirit and of the spirit the flesh takes over. So, it’s not easy. It’s really not easy. I mean, my heart was pounding. I obviously did the wrong thing. I was frustrated with this guy I should’ve been mad at. I should’ve just relaxed and made it into work on time, not as soon as I’d like to get there. But I love you guys. And that’s the message. Don’t trust your own power. You really have to trust the spirit because we can do it on our own. I need your prayers. I got a promotion. Praise report. Bye guys. Bye.

Good morning Daily Audio Bible community this is Diane O. B. from Newburgh Indiana. It is Saturday, March 10th 2018 and it is 4:56 AM. I’m catching up on my readings and I’m in March 2nd right now and the readings are so wow, you know. And what stood out to me was the attitude of Brian Bartimaeus versus the request from James and John. And I’ve been trying to be his friend and looking at all the people in the Bible that were friends and realizing that I haven’t been that great a friend, but today’s reading was just…I don’t know what…the Lord has been dealing with me as the Old Testament they were very rebellious and God was saying you want to keep rebelling well then this is what you’re going to get and this is what you’re going to get. And then Mark, like I said, the request from James and John versus Brian Bartimaeus just to remind us to be humble and just ask for mercy. You want to be God’s friend? It’s not that easy. I’m asking for a general and quiet spirit. That’s not my nature, but I’m getting one. I have a praise report. My son David is in rehab. That’s a miracle. He’s been there for almost 3 weeks now. He’s been drug-free and it’s so nice. And, so, I just wanted to say community, thank you for…

Conversations with my conservative friend

specrOkay, so my friend is huge defender of Ben Carson and claims that the criticisms against him with his appointment to the secretary of Urban Development and Housing, with his lack of experience is racist. I sent him a list of points as to why the criticisms against Carson are not racist, but actually reasonable. My friend then responded, trying to redact logic and reality. I going to post the points I made and the responses he made, to make sure that their is a complete context to the conversation. I would appreciate anybody, whichever side of the political spectrum you are on, with your opinions.

If Ben Carson was white he would still get the same criticism that he is receiving from Elizabeth Warren and other progressives on his qualifications to be the secretary of the Department of Urban Housing and Development.

Ben Carson, M.D. is a Republican, and if he were a Democrat, he would be getting NO Criticism from Warren. This IS a Type of Racism ... against Minorities in a non-progressive Party that Warren deems an “Uncle Tom” Figure. That is still racist, and that is still disgusting.

Research what other black figures are saying about him, and Kanye West doesn't count, because he doesn't know what he is talking about half the time.

Colonel Allen West, Ambassador Alan Keyes, Senator Tim Scott all like him. That is good enough for me. Even Herman Cain knows Carson, M.D. is a Genius.

The term "urban" is a word that conversatives use when they are talking to their white constituants. It is term used to dogwhistles the idea that "people of color live in the cities and they don't have the same values as rural white Americans and I will protect you from them".So saying that Carson is qualified for the position because he grew up in the urban city of baltimore is like saying because I lived near a beach, I am qualified to be head of the navy.

That is not a Comparison I recognise as accurate. In the South, the rural AND urban Areas have mixed black and white Areas in it. It is only up north that “urban” is a derogatory Term for “black.” And it is true that Values ARE different. The Society and Culture is different. Just look at B.E.T. and C.M.T.

2. Urban Development and Housing department specializes in programs that help people who live in those urban areas, and may not have the same advantages as people with money. And how a city can operate to the best advantages for everyone. Meaning he would be in charge of which programs get funding and contacts and loans going to different companies. This also covers people who would be well within or under the poverty and approves or denies them public housing.If anything, this means my stepmom, as an architect, is more qualified than Carson for the position.

Do you honestly think Obama was qualified for the Presidency or even Hillary? I do not see you going after them. These Secretaries have People under them that have worked in that Department for Years waiting on Retirement that will help guide Doctor Ben into making the big Decisions. I am not worried. H.U.D. IS an important Department. I know someone who works at the Francis Marion Hotel who used to live in Federally subsidised Housing. It is very important. But Carson, M.D. is not making the big Decisions all by himself.

3.Warren's main concern is that the incoming president's business and companies deal in construction and real estate, who he has violated many anti-discrimination laws and mistreating and underpaying the people who build his hotels. Warren just wants a yes or no answer out of Carson that the funds the department receives will not benefit from that department with a friend of his incharge. Mitt Romney is not an Elitist because he was a Servant to Men, Women, and Children two Years in Paris giving up a lot of free time, College Years, and earned Money. He was also the Son of Mexican Immigrants. I doubt he has armed Bodyguards. Donald Trump is more or less an Elitist, because he has his own Money, earned, Bodyguards, he looks down on others, and has an arrogant Aura about him. And Education is being devalued as we speak. Elimination of Vouchers and Charter Schools, cracking down on private and parochial Schools, sprouting up of Common Core, New Math, etc., and getting rid of School Choice. It is the dumbing down of America, and the inner Cities and metropolitan Areas are being hit the hardest. Ben Carson, M.D. would be better served as Secretary of Education or Surgeon General. I am not sure what the Qualifications for Cabinet Posts are, but Hillary was not qualified for Secretary of State, and look how People flocked to her. She served less than a Decade in the Senate, and she was a First Lady. She got nothing accomplished. I agree that spells bad News for these non-Politicians in Trump’s Cabinet, but maybe it is for the best. You might have preferred Ivanka Trump in the Oval Office since she is a Woman, yes? ~_^

I have noticed Liberals and Progressives not only hate Conservatives, they hate Libertarians as well. I never understood their Bigotry and Intolerance of others who were different ... or traditional. Our favourite two tone, tone deaf, mood trampler has been hard at work for at least 3 hours in the last month supporting the work of HMTQ, as promised via her exit from the BRF.

The dust mites had barely settled on her calligraphy pen before Scooby arrived home with an ink refill for her to get going. Unfortunately for Scooby the stationary shop had run out of royal blue glitter ink and his mistress was not happy with the shade of ‘peasant noir’ he chose instead. She chucked a cup of tea in his general direction and used half the ink to decorate his top lip with a Poirot-esque facial appendage. Thus whipped into quiet submission to seek permanent ink removal techniques she was in a position to impart some wisdom to HMTQ.

It was a frantic, boots to the ground, empowering, enlightening and de-gassing few hours for MM. The ink flowed across the paper as it was traced from a calligraphy A-Z underneath, the wine glass circles made pretty patterns on the pages, the phone rang once but it was only that chap from the council rejecting the petition for a Princess of Sussex. At the conclusion of this time, MM grinned with purple stained teeth satisfaction at the soggy 30 page tome. This was to be just another notch in her legacy - the Queens speech, at a time of crisis, calligraphically curated by Meghan Markle, HRH, Duchess of Sussex, Princess of Sussex. The speech was sent off toot-sweet to HMTQ.

A royal source has leaked that it is very hard to know the level of adulation to come. LG has indicated in his proof of receipt letter that a special recording of the speech will be sent to MM after its broadcast on the 14th May. She will look forward to commenting on her role in curating the speech at that time. Until then, MM wishes her privacy to be respected and has no comment to make.

A minion provided all the information needed over the phone, he unfortunately had a small speech impediment but this didn’t stop MM from listening intently to the bits of the conversation that interested her.

It was a busy preparation day. MM mused what to film. The minion had mentioned that a whisk assessment would be a good idea in the current covid climate but what whisks had to do with a virus she wasn’t sure. She settled on making a homemade wedding cake. JM emailed the recipe for the one she made the day before MMs wedding, Archie took the car and collected 3 whisks, Doria converted her basement to a kitchen studio, TM dropped off some lights, Scoobie cried and did her makeup, MA took the dogs for a walk and SS called about her outstanding bills.

And all was ready.

Perfect ten
