Holy Wisdom is a traditional topos in Russian Orthodox iconography. The icon you see in the picture is of “Novgorod type,” meaning that it is attributed to the icon of Holy Wisdom in the Cathedral of St. Sophia in Novgorod (16th century). With time, the composition and symbolism of such icons went into the focus of many iconographers and scholars, which led to the establishment of “Sophiology,” a school of thought known for its controversial notions.

Wisdom as the Feminine World Principle by Boris Groy

Art Critic Boris Groy's 2022 article: Wisdom as the Feminine World Principle: Vladimir Solovjev's Sophiolgy material cosmic life is challenged as missing from other Western doctrine at the time and was largely evoked as being needed to be remedied by philosophies that included space for a feminine principle. It is important to note that the nuance of these belief systems are paramount and largely underpin a Christian-Russian Belief system, with Christian doctrine being the basis of many of the Western World Centris in the early 1800's. Named as "Sophia" by theologian Vladimir Soloviev (1853–1900), his Sophiology provided the basis to a counter of other predominant belief systems in Russian in his lifetime. Soloviev follows the ancient Neoplatonic, Gnostic, and mythical traditions in associating the materiality of the world with the feminine principle. Sophia is the ideal or perfect humanity, eternally contained in the integral divine being. The potential problems with this personification became clear when the provincial journalist A. N. Schmidt (1851–1905) proclaimed herself the earthly incarnation of the divine Sophia and Soloviev himself the new incarnation of Christ—and this while Soloviev was still alive. Her talented mystical writings, which made a strong impression on the following generation of Russian Sophiologists, revolve around the female hypostasis of the divine Trinity.

Grounded in ancient southern African creation myths and lore of matter, the artist employs re-membering as a form of knowledge production transmitted through time and process, conferring healing to material and symbolic embodiments of “her” (the lineage of the feminine) within the collective and the self within.

In collaboration with the Frantsila organic herb farm, the artist connected with ancient Finnish healing practices based in flower and herbal relations and smoke sauna traditions. The new, site-specific installation turns the fifth floor of the museum into a scent-laden circuit. An immersive environment is constructed through the exhibition’s title, sculpture, light, scent, sound, moving image and drawing.
