Summary: Dean Winchester, war vet and functioning alcoholic with a life that’s going nowhere, takes a job at Baltimore Hospital for the Criminally Insane. Dean had never heard of Dr. Castiel Novak - notorious serial killer and cannibal - given he’d been dodging bullets and performing field triage during Novak’s sensational trial. Seasoned orderly Rufus lays out the rules: Do not touch the glass. Do not approach the glass. You pass him nothing but soft paper - no pencils, no pens. Use the sliding food carrier only, no exceptions. If he attempts to pass you anything, do not accept it. And most importantly: don't tell him anything personal.

But Dean was never much for following the rules and Castiel has a way of making Dean feel like he isn’t the grade-a loser his hot-shot FBI agent brother thinks he is. Then, a senator’s daughter goes missing, setting forth a chain of events that put Dean on a path that forces him to choose where his loyalties lie and just how far he’s willing to walk into the dark.

Excerpt:

“Dr. Novak, this here is Dean. He’s gonna be assisting me on nightshift.” Dean gave a perfunctory nod.

Novak’s lips twitched. “Hello, Dean.” His brows lifted as he turned his attention back to Rufus. “And what’s become of Mr. Fitzgerald?”

Rufus cleared his throat. “Found greener pastures I guess.”

Novak hummed, arms crossing as he pressed a long finger to his plush bottom lip. “I do hope he’s pursuing his interest in dentistry.”

Novak’s eyes were on Dean again, studying his face with avid interest. Dean stared right back seemingly unmoved, but the hair on the back of his neck had lifted the second their eyes locked. Rufus was saying something, white noise next to him until he leaned into Dean’s personal space to reach forward, tugging a handle on the wall where the plexiglass ended.

“-sliding tray to deliver meals and bedding. Remember what I said before.” Rufus gave Dean a pointed look and Dean glanced at Novak who was watching and listening intently, finger still pressed to his lip. A smile seemed to light his eyes though it didn’t reach his mouth.

“It’s also used to deliver the phone so I can call my lawyer.” His eyes moved to Rufus. “Which I would like to do now, please.”

Rufus checked his watch. “Little late.”

“He’s expecting my call. Dr. Chilton monopolized the majority of my time this afternoon and then it was shift change and well…” Novak trailed, giving a helpless shrug, eyes snagging Dean’s again.

Rufus grumbled to himself but started off back down the hall, presumably to get the phone. Dean should have followed but he found himself held captive by that stare. He fought the urge to take a step back as Novak stepped closer to the glass, breaking eye contact as his head cocked to the side. His chin tipped just a bit as he nosed the air, almost as if he were scenting the circular holes near the ceiling, likely there to permit airflow.

Novak hummed again. “Jack Daniels… no, Evan Williams?” He lifted a brow and Dean froze, eyes going wide. It took everything in him not to bring his palm to his mouth and check his own breath. Novak caught the stutter of his hand at his side and smirked. Dean swallowed hard, holding the other man’s gaze, jaw taut. “Rumple Minz,” Novak said finally with a definitive nod of his head, finger finally leaving his lip as he crossed his arms behind his back. “Bartender’s mouthwash it’s been called. No one would be the wiser.”

“Dean?” Rufus’ voice questioned from where he stood, about to go back through the gate.

“It was a pleasure to meet you, Dean. I’m sure we’ll be fast friends.” Dean shivered as a smile pulled across Novak’s face, and instead of lighting it up it only revealed more darkness.

A Year in Australia by bourbonrain - Excellent smut, angst and characterisation. Draco runs into Hermione propositioning a guy in a bar and decided to take her up on the offer.

Dawn by camnz - what happens when all the adults suddenly vanish and they have to create their own society. Such a good concept and unique story.

A Matter of Property by camnz - wip the war is lost and Hermione is enslaved and Draco is obsessed with her. I have no idea where this is going but I like it.

im sorry but you need to drop the demon dean/priest cas links now

There is a shameful lack of this on AO3, which is strange to me because the dynamic is SO good. Dean is so completely unrepressed and unrepentant as a demon it's delightful, and Cas as a priest is stuffy and brooding in a way that's equally delightful. But out of what's there there are a LOT of unfinished fics and Dead Dove fics that include things like graphic torture and MCD, which are not my bag.

All of that to say, this is a very short rec list.

Good day! I would like to ask about a Dramione fic. It’s a war fic. Harry Potter and Ron Weasley are dead. Draco is a head death eater and captured Hermione. In the end, Draco is revealed as a spy and he and Neville defeat Voldemort. It’s a multi-chapter fic. One notable line is when Draco was about to leave and Hermione stops him: “Draco, stop. You can’t leave me here. Stop. If you loved me, you’d stop”. Something like that.

After a case gone bad FBI agent, Dean Winchester, transferred to Little Rock for a new start but on a sweltering summer morning he and his partner, Benny, are called to a crime scene that drags his past into his present and the whole nightmare starts back up again. Cas is refusing to talk to anyone but Dean and Dean doesn’t think he can face him; can’t seem to reconcile the man accused of murdering 11 people with the man who’d shared his bed for nearly two years. Cas insists Dean is in grave danger, talk of skinwalkers and angels making Dean ache for the broken person he once loved, maybe still does. When Cas escapes and shows up at Dean’s apartment, insisting Dean come with him, Dean tries to run but everything goes black. When Dean comes to he’s in some sort of library, Cas is on the floor and his brother is rushing to help... except Sam wouldn’t be caught dead in flannel. It’s when he sees himself enter the room that he knows something is horribly wrong and maybe Cas isn't so wackadoo after all.

Dean Winchester tugged at the starched collar of his shirt, grimacing in the muggy mid-morning heat. Sweat gathered on his upper lip and he wiped at it, a futile endeavor. He hooked his hands on his hips in an effort to avoid rings of sweat under his arms. He’d forgone the suit jacket and tie but the waistcoat was still oppressive in the cloying humidity, everything damp from the grass at his feet to the crack of his ass. “I swear there is just nothing like Little Rock in July.” Dean cut his eyes to his partner, the shorter man grinning at him behind mirrored aviators. Dean didn’t know how Benny could stand there in a full three-piece suit much less a beard and page-boy cap in this kind of heat. “They say how long this sucker’s been out here?” Dean asked as they trekked farther away from the car, the well-kept lawn near the shoulder of the road giving way to waist-high grass. The field stretched for miles to the east but their destination was only a score of yards away. “Nah,” Benny waved a hand. “Heard the uni puking in the background though.” Perfect. Dean glanced up at the bright blue sky. A wayward puff of a cloud hung lonely above them but it gave no relief from the brutal sun, not quite blistering but gearing up towards it. Dean could see a gaggle of uniformed officers all standing close together and jawing while a tall woman in a pantsuit stood a ways away, surveying the ground with her hand hooked on her firearm. A blond ponytail bobbed above the grass every once in a while and it wasn’t until they’d passed the unis, silent and glaring at the flash of their badges, that Dean recognized the coroner. “Nothin’ to bag, Jody. There’s no body. Just skin. Better to get a bucket, I’d say.” Dean’s eyebrows rose and when he turned to his partner he found Benny’s expression matched his. They were careful as they stepped closer to the cleared space where the two women stood. “Detective Mills?” The tall woman didn’t take her eyes off the ground at her feet. “Special Agents Winchester and Laffitte. To what do I owe the pleasure?” Her tone suggested it was anything but. Dean cut his eyes at Benny before he let a grin pull across his face. “Heard you caught a homicide. Just wanted to offer assistance. I know you’re stretched thin.”

Hi there! Yes, absolutely!! I’ve been meaning to make a rec list for a while. ❤️

There are so many amazing fics, so this list shouldn’t be considered exhaustive. I started reading Dramione in 2018, so a lot of my recs are recent. But there are plenty of classics, too.

Without further ado, here are my faves.

Multichapter

“Classics / Musts”

The Right Thing To Do by @lovesbitca8. Iconic for a reason. Expect slow burn, delicious banter, intense mutual pining, fantastic smut, an all-star lineup of side characters, and some of the richest world building in any Dramione fic.

All The Wrong Things by @lovesbitca8. The Draco accompaniment to TRTTD. Easily my fave Dramione fic in Draco’s POV. Once you’re in his head, it’s impossible not to fall in love with him. It’s smutty, angsty, funny, and above all, gorgeously written. It contains some of Juls’ most stunning prose.

The Thirteenth Night by Nelpher. Memory loss AU (Draco thinks he is a Muggle, Hermione is his “case worker”), and a heart-rending story of what could have been if Draco had been raised as someone else. There’s superb prose, fantastic dialogue, and unforgettable metaphors that swallow your heart whole.

The Fallout by everythursday. The hype about this fic is 100% justified. You have to be patient-- it’s a very slow burn-- but the superb writing and emotional payoff is worth it. And once you finally hit the smut, it does NOT stop.

Atonement by SomethingBlue42. A Voldemort Wins / Master / Slave AU and a fantastic introduction to the "is Draco what he seems to be" trope. Beautiful writing, dangerous / forbidden smut, and a lovely happily ever after.

The Politician's Wife by pir8fancier. When I first heard its premise (they’re still married to others at the outset), I wasn’t sure if this fic was for me. Thank God I read it anyway. This Draco is unforgettable, and so is the intensity of his love for Hermione. The characterizations, emotions, and writing are outstanding.

Hunted by bex-chan. A classic coworkers fic with a murder mystery. Hermione is brilliant, spirited, and overburdened, and Draco is wonderfully snarky, broody, and possessive / protective. The sexual tension is superb.

Silencio by akashathekitty. This fic will destroy you. And you should read it anyway. It’s a HBP AU, and expect hard edges-- lots of slap-slap-kiss and dubcon. The relationship between them is dark, complex, and unhealthy, and she explores it with an utterly unflinching and honest lens. It’s riveting.

The Art of Diplomacy by @andgladly. Look no further to see why Rizzle’s Draco and slow burns are so legendary. You haven’t seen angsty mutual pining until you’ve read a fic that takes SIX YEARS for them to almost kiss. (Here’s the thing, though: when they finally unite, it is so, so, worth it). I adore this fic.

Cursed Child Canon Compliant

Still Life by @monsterleadmehome. Draco takes a job as Advisor to the Minister of Magic, and sparks fly. This fic gracefully handles painful topics (Hermione’s divorce, Astoria’s death), and shows how incredible Dramione works as a team. And the tension (and eventual smut) is scorching.

The Preferred Hour by UselessEnglishMajor. A one-shot, but extremely long. Hermione faces a crumbling marriage and her unexpected feelings for Draco; Draco is struggling to move on from his dead wife. I ugly cried. Be prepared.

Darker Fare

Manacled by @senlinyu. Please mind the tags. It gets very heavy at times, but this story is an incredible feat. Equal parts mysterious, romantic, and devastating. There’s an atypical narrative structure, but be patient-- it pays off.

The Slow Thaw by camnz. One of the darkest fics on here-- mind the warnings. Her terse style of writing works especially well in this AU, because Hermione is emotionally numb. Expect a f*cked up, unwilling romance between two broken people, and an ending that sticks like tar.

Uncoffined by lady_of_clunn. Another Voldemort Wins AU-- the darker variant of Atonement. This was my first intro (in addition to Margot La Faye) to the complex master / slave dynamics in Voldy Wins AUs where Draco is truly dark.

Sex and Occlumency by @graendoll. A lot softer than the warnings make it seem. There is one noncon scene, but it’s complicated, and the fic takes it seriously. The smut and banter are delicious, and so are the eventual feels.

You Change My Mind by akashathekitty. Voldy Wins AU. Be warned that these waters are extremely dark-- but not in the way you’d expect. Akasha proves once more that she’s the queen of a plot twist. This fic is gripping.

Fluff

Every Little Thing She Does is Magic by @monsterleadmehome. Hermione needs a date for wedding season. Fluffy and smutty with just the right amount of pining. Tooth rot and sweetness abound.

The Troublesome Thing About Time by @ladykenz347. The premise is too clever: a time-traveling older Draco shows up and demands to speak to Hermione, his wife-- who works with a much younger, snarkier Malfoy. This fic was a delight. It was sweet, sexy, feelsy, mysterious, and gloriously HEA.

Wrong Life by Camnz. Hermione wakes up in Astoria Malfoy’s body. It's supposed to be a light, preposterous plot, but it’s still a super fun and moving read. It’s funny, poignant, and joyful, and you root for them SO hard.

Veelantine Surprise by UnseenLibrarian. It’s cracky, ridiculous, and f*cking hilarious-- I come away with a huge grin each time. More than worth the read when you need to lift your spirits.

I feel awkward self-recc’ing, but I haven’t read many fluffy multichapters, so I’ll include Traditions. Draco goes home with Hermione over the holidays to meet her parents. Flashbacks explain how they fell in love.

One Shots

familiar faces, worn out places by @lovesbitca8. Hermione wakes up in St. Mungo’s, having lost all of her memories. Draco is her healer. There’s a perfect blend of romance, angst, and smut, and the tension between them is so intense it’s dizzying.

Behind the Knee by @pacific-rimbaud. A smutty one-shot layered with sharp wit, fantastic humor, and utterly gorgeous feels. She is the kind of writer that other writers (including yours truly) drool over-- her writing is f*cking spectacular.

Thirty Times Lucky by galfoy. Draco is morally gray, and there is extreme dubcon at first. But we’re in Hermione’s POV, and we later learn the reason Draco was too selfish to turn down what she was offering. I adore her writing.

Slowly Towards Desire by phlox. (a one shot). A breathtaking tale of Draco’s redemption, through Hermione’s eyes. The longing is palpable, and their final union is so moving. The ending lines have always stuck with me.

Blaise Zabini and the Difficulty of Existing by starkidsftw. A simple and utterly delicious one-shot told from Blaise’s POV. It’s hilarious watching Blaise being cockblocked and frustrated by his moronic best friend (Draco).

Out of Order by worksofstone. Probably 90% of my plunnies can be traced back to this fic. It’s one of the earliest pining, clueless idiots in love fics I remember reading. The humor, feels, and writing are all fantastic.

bitter / sweet by provocative_envy. Another authors’ author. Her writing reminds me of diasterisms’, and my fellow Reylos know what a compliment that is. The two timelines and dialogue are beautifully interwoven, and the ending is superb.

Ribbons Down Her Back by @lovesbitca8. This one-shot is classic LB8: years-long pining that will utterly ruin you, emotionally constipated idiots in love, and gorgeous visual motifs.

Pretty Please by @weestarmeggie17. Meggie’s writing always speaks to my soul, and this hit alllll the right spots for me, emotionally and kink-wise. 😏 I am a whore for marriage law fics that free Dramione to confess their feelings.

Claiming Draco Malfoy by pagan. See my earlier note about being a whore for marriage laws that free Dramione to do what they always wanted to do. Now imagine that with scheming, pining Draco, and a clueless Hermione. 😚👌

Ardent Bonds by @willhavetheirtrinkets. Let there be no doubt: Musyc is the mother of 95% of my kinks. This BDSM one-shot will set you aflame and you’ll be begging her for more (bonus: there is more. See the sequel).

Love Me Twice by bex-chan. Her writing soars especially high in her one shots, IMO, including this memory loss AU. Expect angst, pining / self-sacrificing Draco, and for your heart to be shattered and put back together.

Backwards & In Heels by @farmulousa. Her dry, snappy humor is highly entertaining, but the gorgeous relationship at the center of this deliciously smutty one-shot will melt your heart (and ruin your knickers).

Room Serviced by pir8fancier. I break all of my “rules” for her writing (there’s infidelity, which I generally avoid) with a smile on my face. This one-shot is stark and hopeful and despairing and desperate and utterly real.

Lights Out by Phoebe (EmeraldWoman). Continuing in the unflinching vein, this fic has sharp edges, but their angry, forbidden trysts will burn their way inside you. The metaphors are beautiful, and the last line gives me chills.

How Soon is Now by Nelpher. This one shot will charm your pants off. I could read Nelpher’s dialogue all day every day. There’s razor-sharp wit and hilarious banter, and she seamlessly weaves romance, heartbreak, and finally, hope.

WIPs

The Auction by @lovesbitca8. I know I’m biased, but this Voldy Wins AU is is some of Juls’ best work. There’s plenty of pining, drama, mystery, and angst, and a hell of slow burn. You’ll also find action and (finally) smut. But the romance burning at the core of this fic is its heart and soul. And Juls does not disappoint.

Bring Him To His Knees by @willhavetheirtrinkets. Musyc is a phenomenal writer, and this fic has it all: pining, fake dating, mystery, and angst, with a 100% chance of 🔥 smut. They’re investigating a serial killer and have to go undercover at a sex club. READ.

Good by @lovesbitca8. BDDD (Big Dick Dom Draco) teaches Hermione the ways of submission, and holy f*ckkkk.😳 Two chapters, but SO worth the read.

Shelter and Sanctuary series by @willhavetheirtrinkets. Angst, morally gray characters, unhealthy romance, mystery, horror, and psychological trauma in a Voldemort Wins AU? Sign me the f*ck up.
