Steven Universe as a character is someone who has been mischaracterized and flanderized over the years, to the point people who aren't into the fandom or haven't watched the show believe that mischaracterization to be a fact rather that a product that comes from memes and jokes
Tumblr media
The truth is that Steven often fights in the series when it is needed, usually by fusing with someone else like Connie or Amethyst since he is still developing his powers in the original series. He doesn't cry when he has to fight back or defend himself, with exception if the person attacking is someone he considers a friend. Because, yes, for a 14-15 old teenager it isn't fun having to do something like that and it can be traumatic.
He also doesn't start to cry the moment someone refuses to change their mind or is being mean. He often isn't afraid to be sarcastic or call that person out. He didn't cry when Aquamarine mocked him in ¨Stuck Together¨ nor when Jasper didn't apologize for poofing Amethyst in ¨Crack the Whip¨
Tumblr media
However, what we see is sometimes him blaming himself for not being able to help people that, more often than not, have been hurt by Rose Quartz, his mother, in some way. After Season 3, Steven fears a lot that he is going to become like Rose and he is going to hurt people the way like she did.
In general Steven deals with an Atlas complex in the show. He feels like he has to fix his mother mistakes and deal with ¨what she left behind¨ even when Rose wanted for him to be his own person as seen in the tape she left for him as it was revealed in the episode ¨Lion 4: The Alternate Ending¨.
Steven also defines his identity a lot for being to help other people and fix their problems. He believes that he has to be ¨useful¨ for others. So when he believes that he failed to help someone, that may lead him to think that he isn't living up to his ¨purpose¨ or that he is a failure as a person.
Tumblr media
In reality, he isn't that much different from other hero protagonists from other animated shows. Those who are kind and emphatic and willing to listen to other people and give them a second chance if the person changes their ways. You probably like an animated show that has a protagonist like this. (Who was probably taken inspiration from Steven if the series came out after SU).
The main difference, i think, is that Steven goes a bit more than those protagonists do when it comes to listening to other people, understand their motivations and give them another chance if they regret their actions. A lot has to do with how he is aware that his enemies (usually gems) act the way the do because of the system they were born into rather ¨they are evil just because¨. He gets that their motivations come from the system that hurt them or lead them to believe that their actions are justified.
Tumblr media
Another common mischaracterization is that Steven becomes super buddies with every person he helps...when this isn't always the case. There are some occasions that Steven shows discomfort around people who he has given a second chance. Just because he gives them a second chance doesn't mean that he immediately considers them close friends, maybe allies at best.
A good example of this is the gif above of Steven's interactions with White Diamond in ¨Homeworld Bound¨. White Diamond touches Steven very close to where his gem is- which makes Steven distressed since in his battle again White, she ripped his gem out to prove that Pink was still ¨alive¨. In most of the episode Steven shows to be very uncomfortable around the Diamonds and Spinel, to some extent. They bring him bad memories, which is the main reason he has been doing everything to avoid going to them to ask for their help until this point in Steven Universe Future. He even almost accidentally hurts White's gem by smashing her head against a pillar when she lets him control her to talk to himself. This being result of a intrusive ¨vengeful¨ thought.
I wouldn't say that Steven hates the Diamonds,but- he doesn't want to be their friend neither and wants to avoid in general because he feels nervous and bad around them. It's something like ¨I'm glad that you are changing but i don't want to be associated with you. Please, i would appreciate if you kept your distance from me.¨ dynamic.
Tumblr media
On last point, Steven is someone who usually pushes his feelings down in certain situations and buries them down, which has led him to have strong emotional outbursts in bad moments. He usually prefers to ignore his own problems and take priority on others. Again, this comes a lot from his desire to be useful and be needed, making him trying to ignore how he feels about certain people and pretend that he is doing fine.
This explains why we don't see him lash out that much to others in the original series, and, why he feels so frustrated and angry in Future, since all that anger and negative feelings can't no longer be ignored as they used to and they are having a negative impact in Steven's mental health. This, of course, isn't meant to be seen is a healthy coping mechanism. It is in fact potrayed as something pretty self-destructive for Steven, as a huge flaw of his, that over time he comes to learn that it isn't the best way for him to deal with his problems.
These are some of the most common misconceptions i have seen about Steven's character online. I could go in more depth with some of them but i think the points should be clear enough. This could be considered a general analysis of how Steven is as a character and how he operates, leaving aside more specific things that can be covered in other posts.

For a while now I’ve been writing a su x gf crossover and I want to see what people think/ maybe get some help writing it. I’m new here so idk how this works but here it is
Steven applies for a job at the mystery shack. Under special skills he wrote “various superpowers“. Not too long after Steven got the job, dipper finds Steven’s application and sees where he wrote various superpowers. He asks them about it and he offers to show them off him and Mabel. So they go out into the woods for Steven to show off his powers. Before that, he explained how he was half gem half human, which dipper follows up with a bazillion questions. Steven did his best to answer all of them. After that, he started showing off his powers. First he showed them the basic stuff such as a bubble. Mable thought the bubble was cool so the asked if she could be in a giant hamster ball, and Steven said yes, so she ran around in a hamster ball for a while. Once she finally stopped. He showed them how the bubble could have spikes and be shaped like a crystal formation. It was very small so it didn’t damage anything, but still just a
My s cool. After that, he shows them his shield. Mable wanted to ride it like a toboggan down the hill. Next, he showed the hexagons he could make and control, so they ended up making a little statue of a mermaid. The mermaid got him thinking about water, which got him thinking about cat fingers. He asked them if they could go back to the shack for a bit, them not realizing what he was about to do. Once they got inside, Steven got a glass of water, then asked what they thought about cats. Dipper was kinda iffy, but mable was all excited, so he said “watch this.” Dipper could not be more confused. Steven’s finger was a cat and mable was going to explode with excitement. After Mabel finally calmed down and Steven put away his cats fingers, they went on the roof ledge to chill. Steven was talking about how much fun he was having while walking backwards towards the edge. Dipper told him to be careful, but he said not to worry and kept walking. He was almost at the edge and both twins were scared he was gonna fall.
Steven stepped off the edge and the twins raced to see if he was ok. Before they got to the edge, Steven shot up into to the air and started flying around. Dipper was ghost white. Mable shouted “oooooo, can I try?”
When the end of the day came, Steven got to stay at the mystery shack since he didn’t have any family in town. It was a long day of impressing the twins, but before they went to bed, Steven warned them. He warned them that he may do some weird things in his sleep, so they set up a set of cameras in the guest room to see what he meant. Then they went to bed. Some time in the middle of the night, Steven woke up in the mindscape, but this time there were 2 doors leading to each of the twins dreams. He opened one door to find a land made of rainbow and cupcakes. He decided to take a better look. Somewhere beyond the candy waterfalls, he found Mabel. Steven decided to stay and talk for a while, even staying for the tea party with sentient stuffed animals. After a little while, Steven decided to leave. After he found his way out, he started walking towards dippers dream. But when he opened the door, he was surprised. Rather than a dream, he opened it to see a giant dipper floating there. He knew exactly what was going to happen, because it had happened before with lars. He yelled “dipper, I’m sorryyyyyyyyy!” Then woke up the next morning in dippers bed right next to Mabel. He was about to tell her that he wasn’t dipper, but then he decided to play a little joke on her. He said good morning to her, but when she turned around the joke was immediately over. Turns out this time when he took over dipper, his eyes turned into diamond eyes. Mable jumped back and shouted “who are you and what have you done with dipper?!” Steven realized she was catching on, so he said “what do you mean?” Mable quickly said “your eyes??” So he went over to the mirror and looked, immediately knowing what she meant. So he said “you got me, I’m not dipper, I’m Steven.” What shocked Steven was rather than freaking out, Mable just said “again? What is with dipper and getting possessed? First a demon posses him, then we switch bodies, now this?” Then Steven explained what was going on, they went to Steven’s room to wake him up. When they walked in, Steven was glowing. Then he said “this is what I meant by weird stuff. The glowing, the possession, me being in your dream.” “Wait, that was you in my dream?” “Yeah, but we should wake me up ok wow that’s a weird sentance. Anyway, I don’t really know where dipper is, but he would probably like to be awake now.” So they woke Steven up, dipper’s body collapsed, then sprung up screaming “AAAAAAAAHHHhwwwwwhat just happened?!?” “I may or may not have just possessed you? I have a question, then you can ask me all the questions you want. Where were you?” “I-I don’t know.
Steven noticed that Mabel was sad, so he asked why. She said “I haven’t found a single guy to flirt with this summer and I’m kinda bummed about it.” “I got an idea. What’s your favorite type of plant?” “It’s hard to say, but I choose... all of them!” Steven thought to himself “kinda expected that” then said “how bout this, pick a plant you would date, I know is a weird question, but-” “a watermelon” “a watermelon? Why?” “Because,” she said, “they’re big enough you can hug. If it was a rose plant it would have too many thorns. I love roses, but they’re not the best for hugs.” “Ok. Be back soon, just gotta go do something.” About an hour later, Steven comes back and says “ok, close your eyes and follow me.” “I love surprises!” She exclaimed. After a bit of walking and a lot of bumping into things, steven says “Aaaannd, open them!”
After that dipper started with more question. Steven went to answer them, but then he remembered something, when gems fuse, anything one of them wants the other to know, they will know.
The twins and Steven were watching tv when the last episode of ducktective came on. By the time the show ended, the twins were very disappointed and so was Steven, just not as much.
Steven shows them a picture at the end of when he thought he was (and became) a monster. He even shows the twins a horn on his head hidden by his hair, kinda like the uncorrupted Quartz’s have.
Sorry if the text is all weird. The spaces means there is something missing and these pieces aren’t in order, but this is what I have. Feel free to reblog and or draw this, but however you go about sharing this, can you give me some credit somehow?

What about Amethyst?
I can't say much about her, because she's the only character of the original trio that didn't got her backstory fleshed out.
Like, Garnet is a fusion of two Gems who combined not out of the necessity of fighting, but because they love eachother. Being shunned away by Homeworld and almost killed by Blue Diamond, they run away and later join the rebellion, with the goal of being able freely express themselves.
And Pearl fought in name of Rose Quartz and what she believed in. She also didn't have a master, which it was considered uncommon to Homeworld... or so it seemed, until we learn that she DID served a master, this said master being the infamous Pink Diamond, and the rebellion was all a ruse so the spoiled and childish leader could live a life of relaxation and laziness on Earth.
As for Amethyst... we don't know a lot about her past. All that we know, is that she's a defective Quartz Soldier who has spent too much time on the soil, and has emerged after the war and Diamonds' corruption beam.
We don't know how she met Rose Quartz and joined her rebellion, or how she knew about Homeworld's plans and punishments; we're just left to wonder, to assume and theorize it all.
She's also shown have an inferiority complex due to the fact that she's "overcooked". She envies Jasper and how she came out flawless, and after being defeated by her, she goes on training in hopes of finally outsmarting her.
Amethyst's insecurities were never properly resolved in the show. It was said to have been concluded off-screen, which it's just a lazy and disrespectful thing to do as a showrunner.
Not to mention that there's something problematic about her loud, gluttonous and reckless personality...
You see, Amethyst is black-coded, most likely latinx-coded if we consider the concept arts where she's seen wearing a "ch*la bodysuit" and an assortment of other stereotypical outfits...
Tumblr media
And when she fuses with Garnet, another black-coded character, the result is Sugilite, a giant and brutish gorilla/spider-looking beast, that goes out of control and has to be subdued by the dainty and feminine Pearl by the end of her debut episode.
Tumblr media
Whose voice actress was Nicki Minaj, a black woman, and wasn't properly paid for her performance. Even the show cracks a joke about it:
Tumblr media
And speaking of Pearl, her fusions Opal and Sardonyx are elegant and graceful, always accompanied by dynamic easy-listening tunes...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kinda sus, innit...?
And lastly, but not least important, Amethyst is also the only character in the original trio that didn't got a romantic interest.
I mean, there's Peridot, but the majority of the audience shipped with the bitter and vindictive Lapis Lazuli instead...
Tumblr media
...who also didn't knew who Amethyst was because she didn't had any other interaction outside the barn, since the story couldn't progress unless Steven was present.
I don't have a beef with Amethyst, as a character. She's humorous, daring, charismatic and acts like a big sis to Steven at times.
But like always, she was poorly handled and had her potential shamelessly half-assed.

Okay I need to rant for a second.
Steven Universe may have been very progressive as a series in regards to representation, especially for the LGBT community, but that doesn't mean it doesn't have issues as a series and that it is somehow wrong to critique it
Like they took Peridot, a smart, well-developed autistic-coded character and then later dumbed down her character a ton, having her and Lapis become nothing but comic relief. To see Peridot's character get diminished so heavily was super upsetting, and I should be able to say that without someone being like "but..the gay wedding? good?" Like to have the most neurodivergent character be put into the "stupid, comedic relief" stereotype of autistic people is horribly upsetting and annoying.
And then they handled the topic of abuse poorly in the case of Jasper and Lapis; they were both abusive to each other and it was awful, but they made out Lapis to be this poor victim despite her also abusing Jasper. Not to mention she's a dick later on; like she literally stole the barn, which was not only her home but Peridot's too, and then abandoned them, only to magically come back later when it was convenient to the plot. But like is this really addressed? No because "oh but she's sad so it's okay" like no bitch being upset doesn't ever justify being a bad person
Oh and the diamonds! Remember when Blue Diamond was a metaphor for homophobia and literally wanted to kill Ruby and Sapphire just for accidentally fusing? And then they reintroduced her as sad and depressed over Pink, just an innocent sad lady DESPITE HER BEING AN INTERGALACTIC DICTATOR? Remember how the Diamonds are literally intergalactic dictators that destroy planets, subjugate and oppress gems, have all of the Pearls be "fancy servants" (essentially slaves, like we had the whole "i don't belong to anyone!" with Pearl like come on), murder gems for breaking status quo, took the shattered remains of millions of gems murdered BY THEM in the war on Earth and then fused them together to make a super weapon like a horrific, cruel experiment? Oh and this is all brushed off! They literally said "but intergalactic fascist dictators are people too!!!" Like yes, they are, but they're intergalactic fascist dictators. The fact that their characters were redeemed, and redeemed so quickly too, was absolute bullshit. And they literally make jokes?? Like there was a joke with Steven and Yellow Diamond like "what did we say yellow? What did we say to do? uwu" then yellow's like "ugh, not be all militaristic.." or something along those lines like HOW DOES THAT NOT BOTHER MORE PEOPLE
Also, the handling of the characters who are coded as POC sometimes displays racist stereotypes! My biggest issue with this is in how the show handled Sugilite, and this was within the first season, even. They displayed the fusion of Amethyst and Garnet, the two characters coded as POC, as monstrous, violent, aggressive, and out of control, only for Pearl, the white-coded character, to have the ~grace and mind~ to stop them from wreaking havoc. The fact that more people weren't upset or bothered by that always stressed me the fuck out. Even if it wasn't intended in that way, it's still problematic as it can have harmful implications about women of color, especially considering one of the biggest, most harmful stereotypes against them is that they're violent and out of control. Not to mention that they had a HUMAN ZOO in the show; I know this was a big, BIG issue for people of color because human zoos were A REAL THING; BIPOC were literally put into zoos and treated like animals in history for white people's entertainment. To have this show make a human zoo and then in the creation of it think "we tried to include as many hot people as possible" (yes that was legitimately something a creator said, though i don't think it was Sugar), how can you not be upset by the lack of nuance or care in handling a topic that has such a grave history for people of color? And then you have Bismuth, coded as a POC; she literally said "I want to fight back against the diamonds, intergalactic dictators who have oppressed myself and others for years and years" only for Steven and the show to say "but fighting back against the oppressors makes you just as bad as them" and you know how fucking stupid and awful that statement is. Then, they literally bubbled her and forgot about her for a while. Like, what the hell.
I do digress, SU does have a lot of diversity and positive representation, but these kinds of bad things should NOT be brushed over and justified because there is some good representation. And the amount of times I've seen POC be upset about the racism in the show and then have to deal with white people telling them "but the show has done so much for representation. Especially for the lgbt community! We shouldn't criticize media that's done so much for us" is absolutely ridiculous!!!
Us white people should NEVER brush off the concerns or upset that BIPOC have over media and it's negative representation/messages; BIPOC should be listened to, and when they say there's an issue, do NOT ignore them, do NOT imply they're in the wrong or shouldn't be calling creators out on their bullshit. A show might have good qualities, it might have some good representation, but marginalized communities calling out issues in media that hurt them and spread harmful messages shouldn't be ignored or silenced. EVER. STOP DOING THAT
anyways thanks for coming to my TEDtalk

How did you decide which episodes would be impacted and had scenes that were significant enough to include? I’m working on a canon divergent fanfic for another series that’s pretty much just the story with one more character. I want to know how necessary these things would be.
That is an excellent question!
I am on mobile and don’t have a page splitter at the moment, so WARNING: LONG POST AHEAD.
When rewriting canon, I like to stick to 5 hard-and-fast rules, being: 1) know your character’s arc before going in, 2) know the episode’s overall message, 3) don’t take away from other characters, 4) adding original content must be done as-needed, and 5) DON’T BE AFRAID TO CHANGE THE WHOLE STORY. This can either be exceedingly easy or extremely hard.
1) Know your character’s arc before going in. This one seems obvious, but it can be very easy to get distracted. What would happen if this character was present for this scene? What if she/he/they followed this character around? Stuff like that. The whole thing on this particular blog with Spinel being present for the climax of Maximum Capacity is certainly tempting, and fun to think about, but does it do anything for Spinel’s arc in this AU? In my case, no. So she will not be present. You want to make sure you have some kind of roadmap either on paper or in your head of when and where things should happen, keeping in mind that character’s relationships, mental space, and goals. If Spinel wanted to fuse with Amethyst, she’d have to do it when the two have a good relationship, and something like that takes time to develop. She cannot fuse with Ames in the beginning of the series, absolutely not, but she will later on. Knowing facts like that on when things can and/or SHOULD happen is essential. So episodes like “Giant Woman,” “Horror Club,” “Crack the Whip,” or “Keystone Motel” will not be included in the list.
2) Know the episode’s overall message, and who is in the spotlight. You’d think that on a show like SU, that’d be easy, but often, it can be hard to pinpoint exactly who we should be focusing on. Fun fact: it usually isn’t Steven, which is why when Steven lets us into his head a little, it’s always such a huge, emotional bomb drop. I will keep using Maximum Capacity as an example. That episode was focused on Greg’s and Amethyst’s relationship with each other, their past friendship, and how each of them handles the stress of the past differently. Amethyst wants to loose herself in “Little Butler,” but Greg wants to do other things, too, causing them to come to a crossroads. It’s a coming-to-terms story for the both of them, and with this AU, I don’t want to disturb that. “Giant Woman” was about Amethyst and Pearl. “Joyride” was about Steven. “Keystone Motel” was about Ruby and Sapphire. “Steven the Sword-Fighter” is an example that can be shifted, because the purpose of that ep was to teach the viewer about poofing. It was less about Pearl and more about Gems in general, making it okay to try and change a few things around (so long as the poofing of... a gem still happens). Knowing when an episode is about a character, a relationship, or world building is really important, and helps to try and decide which to alter.
3) Do not take away from the other characters. Know their arcs, too, and why certain choices were important. Example being “Crack the Whip,” where Amethyst hits her lowest low and her quest to be stronger begins. That one, if you want to change it, you can, but if it were me, I would leave in Amethyst getting poofed and Jasper getting defeated without her, as it begins a huge moment for her character. By changing up that scene, she doesn’t have the chance to confide in Steven, they don’t fight, she doesn’t hit her lowest low (which all or most characters need to hit at some point), and then Smokey Quartz cannot exist. They exist because she trusted Steven and the two of them felt equal to each other, and trusting, and loving. THAT allowed them to fuse, and if “Crack the Whip” never happened or was altered too much, that all that goes out the window. So I am not going to have Spinel grab Amethyst and pull her out of the way or anything, or have her fuse to beat Jasper, because that undermines the whole point. However, I CAN say that Amethyst’s arc affects Spinel’s. Not saying this is canon, as this is just an example, but maybe Spinel becomes more attached to Amethyst after that, trying to protect her from being poofed again because she feels guilty for not being there to stop it. Then that affects Amethyst, makes her feel like Spinel is her bodyguard, which Amethyst doesn’t want and feels she doesn’t need. It’d serve to make her angrier, and could lead to she and Spinel getting into an argument or a fight. In this scenario, would I replace “Steven vs Amethyst” with “Spinel vs Amethyst”? No. But something similar COULD happen. It’s all about where you want to go, and what works best for these characters.
4) Adding original content must be done as needed, not whenever you feel like it. Does this mean do it sparingly? Depends on the story you want to tell. For me and my AU, that means I need to pay attention to Spinel’s arc and when she needs to learn/do things. Take “Man of the Mountain” for example. It takes place directly after “Bubble Buddies,” and is the result of Spinel being jealous of Connie eating up Steven’s time and friendship. So, she seeks to strengthen their bond as reassurance to herself that Connie is an inconvenience at worst, and at best, she’ll fade away eventually. She and Steven are still best friends, and she’s gonna prove it, darn it! Then the events of that episode may or may not affect what happens next, or later down the line. For this AU, Season 1 is mostly going to build things that are yet to come, and the episodes don’t directly feed into each other, meaning I am using original content sparingly. 5 originals compared to 52 actual episodes? I think I did good on that front. xD But, don’t be afraid to add an episode for an information dump, or to come to a conclusion. That can’t be the only thing IN the episode, of course, but if that’s the pure reason the episode exists, then fine. Do it. Whatever makes your story flow and make sense. But by making every other episode about Spinel, suddenly it’s only about her and not the other characters. Might as well rename the show at that point. The other characters get the spotlight they need/deserve, with Spinel getting her time to shine as well.
5) DON’T BE AFRAID TO CHANGE THE WHOLE STORY. This is one I’m struggling with, but I feel it worthy to mention anyway. If your character is psychic, then have them use their powers when it’s a good character choice and makes sense logically. If that throws off the entire tale, then roll with it. Get stuff back on track. Or maybe you need to take out that character for a bit. Formulate a way to do that. But if your character had a chance to shoot a blow dart at the main villain and take them out, perfect for capturing them and dismantling their army, wouldn’t they take it? If not, there had better be a good, in-character choice. Maybe the villain’s entire plan changes to account for the character’s psychic powers, creating a decoy or sending out a squad to trap/kill them specifically. If it’s in-character and it makes sense, heckin’ DO IT. Get creative! Get weird! Stories write themselves; you just need a beginning and a good grasp on the characters. Then the characters will take your story and run with it. Your job then becomes keeping up. I wish I was joking. I’ve had characters completely derail my stories before because they just couldn’t make that one character choice that was the lynchpin for the whole next scene, and it made me mad, and no I’m not mad about it two years later! You have the map, they steer the ship. You just gotta trust them.
This version of Spinel was left alone for 625 years, then cast away like a worthless toy. She’s been through war, lost almost all her friends, and had her #1 idol taken away and replaced with a smaller, weaker, half-human male version of her. She’s been through the ringer on emotions, and although she values herself as a friend first and foremost, that doesn’t mean I- and by extension, the other characters- can’t challenge that point of view. Make the character struggle. Know how they interact with others. How do certain events change them? Will they change every episode, or only some? Which are important to their arc? And most importantly, what is the point? By changing this thing here, what are you doing for that/those characters and/or the story? Is it a quick, harmless, funny moment, or is it to show a darker side to a character we’re familiar with, and to see them change now that there’s a new presence beside them? These are questions only you can answer as you chose which episodes to pick.
I hope any part of this was helpful. Feel free to ignore any of these points, or add your own. Again, every story is different, and each story should be treated as such. No creator is experienced equally, and we all have different interpretations of characters. Nothing is right or wrong, so long as you, the author, can justify it, even if it’s just “I thought it’d be cool.” It’s your AU. Go for it!
Thanks for listening to me ramble. Scene.

Steven Universe Future 02 - Guidance
Tumblr media
With that title, it could be the continuation of last episode's "plot". The new gem seemed to get her bearings by the end but more guidance wouldn't haven been out of place.
I just googled the word "guidance" and it has the following definition: "advice or information aimed at resolving a problem or difficulty, especially as given by someone in authority." So, maybe it'll be about Steven shouldering even more problems, being the one who everyone looks for to for guidance. Or maybe he'll try to ask the diamonds for advice and fail?
I don't know so let's do this!
Tumblr media
This show already needs more Peridot.
Tumblr media
Guiding a blindfolded Steven is an extremely literal title drop.
Tumblr media
There was a bit of this last episode, with Amethyst loving being a teacher, but she saying she's proud without an ounce of sarcasm is probably the biggest example of how much she's grown.
Tumblr media
This is really cool! I'm a tiny bit worried about the gems getting paid (even if they don't necessarily need money) but I figure Amethyst already thought about that.
Tumblr media
The second of silence here really sells the joke.
Tumblr media
Weren't they already her bodyguards in the movie? Or maybe I'm remembering the opening. They really fit her dignified image though.
Tumblr media
oooh, confirmation that she is Biggs
Tumblr media
Can't believe Biggs found a job liquefying humans for Funland's new protein smoothies.
Tumblr media
Okay, finally, she is Crazy Lace. I wondered if her coloring was result of the corruption but with that name maybe she's always looked like that.
I'm really glad the gems seem to be integrating well. I'm curious about things like ... is any gem in charge of human workers? Are they all doing unskilled labor? Are they getting paid? But, I need to remember this is not the kind of show that would have those answers.
Steven Universe was never too interested in exploring the societal impact of the Crystal Gems being on Earth or how everything worked in Homeworld, so I doubt SUF is going to go too deep and I almost hope it doesn't. The more they explore this aspect, the harder to avoid comparisons to real life refugee and immigration issues.
Tumblr media
I have been playing too much Animal Crossing because those three in the back really look like villagers.
Tumblr media
I really hope that the plot won't be Steven doubting Amethyst plans because she didn't ask him first. He is looking more and more worried but fingers crossed.
Tumblr media
I love her... bun?
Also, poor Andy is wishing he had never come back to Beach City.
Tumblr media
yessss, she is little larimar
Tumblr media
I mean, Amethyst is right. They chose to do the same, and they have the freedom to do something else in their free time. They can quit! They are happy! It's important to "deprogram" them but that doesn't mean they can't do what they usually did in the past if that's what they really want.
Tumblr media
I guess this ties with Steven's "revelation" last episode about how you never end learning about yourself. But I don't know, pushing the gems to do things out of their comfort zone is not a bad idea but I'm not sure it can be done lightly. They are already out of their comfort zone by living and working with humans, on earth, without the Diamonds. How much more do they want to push them?
Tumblr media
I was thinking he'd ask them to do some origami, maybe inflate some ballons... but nope, he's throwing them in the deep end.
Steven was usually in the right (with some exceptions) when this type of plot appeared in SU, is SUF doing the opposite? Maybe help him learn to trust everyone can do their own thing?
Tumblr media
Yeah, rip Andy.
Tumblr media
Love Amethyst just glaring Steven to death without saying anything.
Tumblr media
oh no, she's going to optimize for maximum scream performance
Tumblr media
uh-hm
Tumblr media
I knew I was going to love her when I saw her in the opening, and I wasn't wrong.
Tumblr media
and she keeps getting better
Tumblr media
The fact that he's being 100% genuine is the only thing that saves him from being horribly condescending.
Tumblr media
But he is steamrolling over all her objections. Steven is reminding me of an overbearing parent, unable to let their children do their own thing.
Tumblr media
This is the best thing I have seen today.
Tumblr media
This episode is really not interested at all in being subtle about what's going on with Steven.
Tumblr media
oh my god why
Tumblr media
I was expecting something closer to "the truth is in the middle" not this
Tumblr media
"I have been waiting for you, Mr. Bond"
It's petty but it's such a great feeling when everything goes wrong and you get to say "I told you so."
Tumblr media
"our"?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
That was fast, there's still half the episode left. Hopefully they'll dive a bit more into Steven's reasons instead of just leaving it here.
I took an screenshot of Amethyst because her emphasis of "gems" in that sentence was interesting. It made me realize that beyond Steven's own deal, this also works as an example of the white savior complex. Not 100% because well, that requires more context that SUF will ever give us, but it's a valid reading.
Tumblr media
I can't believe they lasted this long. Poor Andy, born in SU's most unnecessarily long episode just to die in a cameo.
Tumblr media
First: aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa, SUF's first fusion!
Second: This entire argument could have easily caused a rift in their relationship since it was Steven doubting Amethyst abilities which, well, hits a lot of her weaknesses so I love that they talked, Steven apologized and immediately fused after. Their relationship is really strong after all these years.
Tumblr media
Best joke so far. Wow, that made me laugh really hard.
Tumblr media
Smoky has been busy these past few years, that's pretty advanced yoyo-ing.
Tumblr media
She may have learned new tricks but she's still Smoky, hiding her anxiety under jokes.
Tumblr media
Stop lying to yourself, Larimar. Enjoy them. Enjoy the screams.
Tumblr media
Whoa, whoa. I didn't expect the pinkness to come back so soon.
Tumblr media
Wow, the pinkness it's a lot more interesting than I expected. I thought it was just a simple power-up, maybe Steven's gem giving him more physical strength but no more than that. Here it responded specifically to Smoky's desire to have more time. This opens up a world of possibilities for what it could in the future. What are its limits? What does it mean for Steven? Are all Diamonds that powerful?
Tumblr media
And it vanished the second Smoky said "time" again. Interestinger and interestinger.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Incredibly powerful life lesson from Steven Universe Future.
Tumblr media
She could have told this to Steven earlier but I kinda doubt he would have listened.
Tumblr media
Now Steven needs to figure out what to do now that neither the world or his friends need saving.
Tumblr media
The movie really was just a prologue for this season, huh? Steven spent SU learning that he wasn't his mom, he was just Steven. Then the movie taught him that he couldn't stop there. And now SUF seems to be about Steven learning how to deal with that, because everyone is moving on except him.
Tumblr media
I was getting a bit teary-eyed after their convo and where Steven's thoughts seemed to be going but wow, Larimar is amazing.
Tumblr media
I think I like this episode more than the last, it really sold me on Steven's struggles in figuring out what it means to be Steven when his friends are taking the weight off his shoulders. I don't like armchair diagnosing, especially when cartoon characters never end up confirming it one way or the other, but during this entire episode Steven's behavior screamed co-dependency. That's one more point for "Steven really needs therapy."
Amethyst was so well-adjusted this episode that I don't have a lot to say other than I'm happy for her after everything she went through in the show, and I love how her relationship with Steven has evolved.
I think that's all for now so until next time!

Jake Reviews Stuff: Steven Universe: The Answer
Tumblr media
Happy pride everyone and naturally, it just wouldn’t feel like a celebration of pride in animation without one of the frontrunners of LBGTQ represintation in Children’s television, as well as quality in storytelling in general: Steven Universe.  Since your seeing this you probably know the gist but as my idol peter parker would say let’s do this one last time:  The story of Steven, a 14 year old, though he dosen’t look it, boy with a boundless amount of love, compassion and empathy,  lives in beach city with his borderline homeless dad , surrogate moms and surrogate until we find out they actually are kinda related sister: Garnet, a fusion of two gems in love and thus the sum total of both them and their feelings, Peal, an emotional but loving gem who grew from a servant to Rose’s right hand, sometimes lover, and confidant, and Amythest, a gem born long after the war that brought everyone else here who acts like a 20 something or teenager half the time. Steven soon finds himself fighting alongside themt o protect earth both from the monsters caused by the final battle of the war his mother fought to save earth from distruction and let her army live life how they choose, and the gem homeworld as it starts to take an intrest in earth again. And as the fight goes on Steven also starts to see just how flawed his family is and how much they haven’t moved on from his moms death and finds himself forced to help them past it while grappling with his mom’s terrible and complicated legacy, everyone expecitng him to basically be her, and what it means to be a  being that’s truly one of a kind.  I absolutley love the show: it’s not without flaws; Characters tend to be ingnored for seasons or episodes at a time, some arcs are really weirdly paced and the slice of life episodes can be jammed in the weirdest places. But the show’s strength: a devotion to having emotional resolution be even more important, and sometimes just as powerful animated and framed, than fighting, though the show’s fight scene’s are incredible, incredibly deep characters with fully fleshed out arcs and growth, and a love for tackling deep, heavy subjects through metaphor or even directly, taking on things such as gender identity, societal conformity, ptsd, grief, gender identity and many many more with grace and weight and helping kids with them in the process.  The show is also the frontrunner for LBGTQ+ representation in cartoons in the 2010′s. While other shows had bits nad pieces, series creator Rebecca Sugar was the one responsible for making Marcline and Princess Bubblegum ex-lovers and making it obvious as possible without saying it because standards were bullshit, Steven Unvierse decided to say fuck subtley and thus had PLENTY OF gay content: Garnet is a fusion of two women and the embodiment of their love and relationship, and when the two show up their very affectionate with one another to the point of bullcrap censorship in less tolerant countries such as india and russia, while Pearl out and out had a CENTURIES LONG romantic relationship with Steven’s mother who was explictly pansexual, and that’s just the main cast!  But I genuinely believe that it’s thanks to Steven Universe that children’s animation is as LBGTQ+ positive as it is now. SU wasn’t the first to have gay leads but it was one of the few kids shows with the balls and, at least in the us, network support to explictily have gay characters as some of the main cast, and I feel the show’s success softend execs at CN and other companies to let more representation too. Since SU”s airing, most CN shows have had gay content great and small, Nick has had gay parents and a bisexual lead, not to mention the korra ending kicking it all off, and Netflix has said hold my beer, having not only multiple gay main characters, but having the finale of she ra be built on a decleration of love between two women saving the universe and being the climax of the entire series.  Not that those crews likely still didn’t have to FIGHT for most of that, i’m not bilind and NOelle Stevenson has outright admitted she had to be sneaky about catradora for season 1 as to not get it shut down, but I feel SU”s sucess and Rebecca and crew’s own likely fights put the various studio goon’s reflector shields down and got more representation into children’s media. And that’s a wonderful thing.  So naturally the show was a lock for this month and for coverage here.. i’ts just given the show’s heavily seralized nature and the fact it dosen’t really have any long romantic story arcs. Sure ther’es plenty of romance, but it’s mostly either in the past or between an already married couple that’s also a person. The show’s arcs were more focused on worldbuilding and character building, which I do prefer and will be doing one in July.  But it did make it tricky to find an episode to spotlight the character I wanted to spotlight: Garnet Garnet is easily my faviorite character, with pearl a very close second: she has a great dynamic, is a decent if flawed mother and leader, and is also damn funny with her deadpanned reactions to things being utterly divine. As well as whatever the hell this is.
youtube
The problem is I also wanted to spotlight the parts making up her: Ruby and Sapphire, their relationship etc as they themselves are fantastic and i’m 100% convinced were the inspriation for one mr mc skat kat and one paula abdul’s magnum opus in steven’s unvierse
youtube
The problem is most rupphire episodes are tangled in bigger arcs. They debuted at the end of the invasion arc, they had the baseball episdoe together shortly after another arc, and their wedding is tied up in the reveal rose was pink diamond and the reception is crashed by the climactic battle with Yellow and Blue that sets up the final arc of the whole series. But thankfully season two gave us The Answer to my problem.. ironically named the Answer, basically Garnet Year One as Garnet tells steven how she came to be, a story so beauitful they made a storybook out of it.. and it’s my honor to present it here after the cut.
We open at the Barn... as a refresher at this point the Gems and Steven have been staying at Greg’s old family farm in order to have the  space and suplies to build a drill to stop the cluster from hatching and destroying earth, with Peridot reluctantly working with them. So as such Steven’s sleeping there when Garnet wakes her.. and in a notable departure for her it’s san’s shade, which shows her adorable excitment as she wakes Steven. Turns out it’s his birthday! And.. I don’t really begrudge the show for takin ga break for two episodes to celebrate it: besides being the only time steven went up a year, on screen, it was a nice break from the peridot/cluster storyline for a second, and this and the following episode are pretty great and both add a lot to the world as a whole. It’s why i don’t MIND when SU takes a break from the plot, as long as they do it for good reason.
IN a great callback steven asks if garent’s going to tell him she’s a fusion, as Jailbreak revealed the reason she hadn’t yet is she was saving it for his birthday, which is a good joke and a great callback. Garnet cheerfully tells him know but has clearly found a backup: While steven knows she’s a fusion now.. she never told him how she came to be and how ruby and sapphire met after all.  So we journey back about 5000 years to, as we’d learn much later with the pink diamond reveal, the start of the gem war. Earth was to be the next great colony, as we’d learn next season for pink diamond, but something was in the way: The rebel rose quartz and her brutal right hand pearl were causing tons of distruption, so the rest of the diamonds had come to snuff out the rebellion personally.  So that’s where Ruby and Sapphire came in. Sapphire is a higher class gem, and befiting her caste is a precog, with Sapphires brought in to tell the diamonds the future so they can either make sure it happens or change it’s course. Garnet neaturally has this ablility too but vastly improved to see multiple timelines. She’s proper and distant.  Ruby meanwhile is a shy, if more intellgent then her peers grunt soldier. Rubies as we learned here are basically made in groups to fuse. To homeworld, Fusion is simply a tactic to create a slightly stronger gem out of three other gems, and basically creates one giant person. In Contrast up to this point the series has shown fusion as something important to the crystal gems and requriing more work: It requires all parties to be in sync to even happen much less stay together, and requires an emotional connection; Freindship, romance, kinship... whatever it is it’s needed to hold the fusion together. It’s part of what MAKES garnet so impressive: Garnet is a permafusion, only unfusing either when her two halves are needed. or when thier personal conflict is so great they CAN’T stay fused. It also means due to said emotional resonance and combining the best traits of two gems rather than creating just one big gem, that the crystal fusions we’ve seen are vastly more powerful and versitale.. evne if they dont’ speak much because Rebecca made the mistake of getting big artist to do the role and apparently refused to just you know.. recast? It’s something that always baffled me. There’s no shortage of talented poc performers who can sing out there.  Anyways, that’s part of what makes this intresting: up till now, we’d only seen one form of fusion.. we hadn’t seen what homeworld thought of it and used it for, and to the show’s credit it was hinted back during the return arc when Jasper called fusion a “tactic for making weak gems stronger”, since as far as homeworld used it, that’s what it was and it’s a stark contrast to the crystal gems harder to maintain but much more intresting and unique fusions.
We’ll get more into this later. The two front rubies argue about whose going to punch people whie our ruby just points out the obvious: Their just going to fuse into a really big ruby and punch together. This gets her shoved into sapphire, which despite not being her fault gets gasps and monocle pops from the gems around them. And it’s about time I dug into the episodes unique animation style: instead of the usual, only a handful of characters, the rubies, sapphire, and later rose and pearl, are animated normally and even then, at least for the first half, are brightly lit in their primary colors, while the rest of the gems present are just barely animated sytlistic shadows. It’s a really intresting choice and a clever way to save on budget, while still looking gorgeous.
Sapphire, while refusing Ruby’s help getting up, is understanding if monotone, but as w’eve seen in the present, tha’ts mostly just a side effect from seeing where everything’s going, and likely the reason garnet’s own emotional process is much like that; Stoic but willing to emote when necessary. Sapphire however has a reason for brushing her ruby off: the reason she was called here.. Blue Diamond.  This is intresting as it’s not only the first time we HEARD of blue, as before this we only heard of Yellow, who’d make her proper debut at the end of this season, but the first time we saw a diamond in any way shape of form. Sure we had murals and such, but given the lack of info about the diamonds this early on it was impossible to tell whow as who and the only giveway there was more than was diamond was the symbols: the era 1 symbols in temples and at the arena showing all 4, hinting at pink, and the modern one shown in jailbreak that was a triforce. We do only see Blue in a hood, covered by her palquin and her voice done by Garnet, but it’s still the first tiem we’d see any of the diamonds in any onscreen form. The Garnet voice is also notcable as every other voice in the flashabck, including characters who aren’t either part of garnet or the same gem type as part of her, is normal.. it’s only blue Garnet does a voice for.. and a clever way of covering for the fact they likely hadn’t cast her voice actress yet. It’s also notable for the introduction of Blue Pearl, who silently stands by her Diamond teh whole time.. it’s weird thinking back to the fact that this was the first time we’d really SEEN other versions of our main cast: other rubies and another pearl. Sure we knew they were all part of one type or another with the obvious exception of garnet.. but this episode is notable, and weird to think about giiven how many variants we see as the series goes on, for being the FIRST time we see this on screen.
Sapphire reveals that while she, and two of her rubies, will poof the rebllion will end here, and Blue is releaved to here this, thanks sapphire and dismisses her. As Garnet explains, Sapphire had no issue with this as she simply saw her life as one straight line: No choice no, option: Fate would just come as it may. Sapphire also muses to Our Ruby on the fact that she finds this planet a wonderful place for a colony.. and that she wishes she could’ve seen more of it. While Our Ruby says theirs more time, Sapphire, while appricating the sentiment gently shoots it down.  This little moment is interuptted however as Rose shouts out, signaling her and Pearl’s arrival. The battle has begun. And I do like the clever use of storytelling here.. not in presetnation but in what we’d learn muchhhh later with the big reveal: To a first time watcher, we just thought that it was only rose and pearl for story purposes or it was a small attack. After all the rest of the characters we’d seen were just shadows, so I, and I presume many others just assumed the rest were off screen or failing that this was just a small strike. As we’d learn once we got the full story of Pink Diamond becoming rose.. it was indeed JUST them, and only them at the time. it’s probably why in the future sapphire saw the rebellion ended her: Pink while powerful had to reign it in as not to be found out and pearl, while as we see her is already utterly badass and an ace with a sword as she mows down Quartz soldiers, is still one gem going up against a literal army.  Another noticable thing, that hints at when this takes place is the fact that when Rose takes down the fused rubies, poofing two of them and leaving ours to flump to the ground.. she uses her fists. At this point her iconic sword is well established and it’s assumed it was just left out for artistic purpose.. but since we meet who made it next season with Bismuth, it’s another clever hint this is before there was a proper army. Bismuth wasn’t a gem yet so Rose/Pink just had her natural strength and shield to protect her, which wasn’t nothing, but the sword probably made it far easier to hold back.
And thus we come to the moment of truth: Pearl has come back and is about to mow down sapphire.. when Ruby realizes just waht Sapphire meant and waht she’s about to do and thus.. the future changed. Ruby tackles her out of the way. And Garnet is born.
Tumblr media
I absolutley love Garnet’s cotton candy design, both as a sensible evolution, as this is a garnet formed in a moment of passion and accidently versus the one we see in the present or even in flashbacks: a person formed by choice and love and thus having a more stable form. Naturally, Rose and Pearl are baffled by this.. and it’s even more understandable.. as the above mentioned pink diamond origin episode explained.. they had never SEEN this kind of fusion before. While i’m sure this isn’t the first time this happend in gem history, any others were likely killed as soon as it were over or went into hiding as we saw with the off colors. And Pink being sheltered and Pearl being created for her, probalby simply never thought of something like this existing. But they also realize this never before seen to them miracle is their cue to skidoo and book it out of there.  Naturally Blue is pissed and the court are disgusted as the two defuse and both have about the same reacation.
Tumblr media
Before Blue can murder Ruby for you know, doing her fucking job, Sapphire ttakes her by the hand and books it off the sky arena and the two plummet to earth  while ruby screams no a lot. The foundation of any good relationship.
They float down to earth.. because she’s Mary Poppins Ya’ll. Ruby reveals why she’s upset: Because as she sees it, there’s dozens of her. She’s not WORTH this. Sapphire has no reaction because for the first time, she has no idea what the future brings, what it means and the future she saw was just shattered. She’s frozen.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jokes aside I really love that pun. Ruby worries and quickly scoops her up bridal carry style and quickly finds the two a cave. In the cave the two light that flame get that and Ruby continues to freak out over what happened,  upset with her self that she’s supposed to save sapphire.. with Sapphire gently reassuring her “you already did.”  It’s also intresting as it shows even garnet, or at least half of her, had to go through what peridot did.. it went down a bit easier since exile happened right away, but Ruby still had to shake off the homeworld conceived notion that she was WRONG for saving sapphire simply because it lost them the fight and got them fused and all that. It’s also a nice metaphor for someone whose been told, for a nightmarish rainbow assortment of bullshit resaons, that being gay is wrong only to discover they are and having to realize there’s nothing wrong with who they are.
After a breif flash the two finally talk about their fusion, with Sapphire being suprised considering she figured fusion wasn’t anything like they experinced.. only for Ruby to chime in that sh’es RIGHT: Their fusion wasn’t anything like Ruby’s normal “me but bigger’ fusion.. they lost htemselves.. and both clearly enjoyed it, expressing it through having a third eye for ruby and more than one for sapphi
We then get the utterly adorable musical number: “Something Entirely New”Which takes the so far mildly subtle “This is like two people who had sex with the oppsite gender for the first time “ metaphor.. and just makes it texual as the song basically screams of two people talking over an unfamiliar sexual experince, but in a cute, well done, and intentionally awkward way that’s still approraite for the kids. it’s a real beautiful song and also shows the burgoning couple bond on earth. This is important as a previous episode had garent and out and out say that love takes time and work, accurate and that love at first sight simply dosen’t exist.. and we also see she practices waht she preaches as the montage does show some time past and even before that the two genuiely bonded. Sure they FUSED on the spur of the moment.. but actually loving each other took time and bonding.
youtube
As the song ends, the two dance romantically, deciding to be Garnet for good as we get some nice callbacks to jailbreak: the two hum the tune to stronger than you, now revealed to be their song and spin similarilty to the way they have when they’ve fused, a nice callback that also add’s weight to those previous moments.. and thus two become one and Garnet is reborn.
Garnet narrates as her past self gets used to her strange new form.. and just as she does she falls down a ditch. Eh could’ve been worse.
youtube
Garnet finds herself face to sword with Pearl. Pearl backs off a bit once she realizes who their dealing with, and Garnet panickedly offers to unfuse.. only for Rose to enter. Garnet narrates them as Rose Quartz and her terrifying renegade pearl.
youtube
Truly a force to be reckoned with. Rose dosen’t care about her own feelings though “What you feel is bound to be more intresting” It’s a good moment both because Garnet , up to this point hasn’t had to think about what they are or how they feel.. but more notably... no one but the two gems makingthem up ever cared, not before they were garnet and after all the homeworld gems wanted was to kill her. We also get a great line from garnet: “Why am I sure that i’d rather be this than anything else and that i’d rather do this than anything else i’m supposed to do? “  Rose’s response.. to give a giant grin while saying welcome to earth. As Garnet continues to question things, Rose tells her to never question this, never question what you are... which is a damn good message for a kids show to give out. The metaphor is crystal clear: no matter where you are on that beautiful lbgtq+ rainbow: NEVER be ashamed of who you are, never question it.. just enjoy it. Be who your meant to be and love that person. It’s a damn good message and one badly needed in a medium that for way too fucking long was SCARED to tell messages like this: Of sponsors, of foreign markets, and of idiots like one million moms. it took people like rebecca and her crew to say “fuck that”, to say that queer kids NEED these kinds of stories to know they aren’t alone, they are beautiful how they are. They shoudln’t have to wait to find out what they are.. is okay. And that’s beautiful.
As Rose Tells Garnet that she is the answer, and as we cut back to the present, Steven asks what the answer is. Garnet simply answers: Love. And we close on one great exchange Steven: I knew it Garnet; (wistfully) So did I.
Final Thoughts: While I remembered the episode being good, hence part of the reason I choose it I forgot just HOW great this episode was, especially post reveal. The art direction is goregous, shot like a fairy tail and rightfully so since this episode is told as one, the story is heartwarming and erica and charlene really act their hearts out as ruby and sapphire while Estelle kills it as both present garnet narrating and past garnet, a garnet ENTIRELY diffrent from what we’ve seen but acted beautifully. It’s espcially noticable since unlike the other two lead gems, we obviously wouldn’t see more garnets like we would amythests and pearls, so unlike her contepraries estelle really didn’t get to flex her vocal range as much playing alternate versions as the seasons went on, with this being the closest she got.  The episode is beautiful, has a wonderful message, and is just utterly charming and is agian why I DON’T mind that every su episode dosen’t advance the plot: Sometimes it dosen’t need to. And even so this one ended up being WAY more important than I remembered, introducing blue diamond and turning out to be MASSIVELY important once the reveal kicked it: For it was Garnet, and the love dthat forged her that changed Pink’s direction. Before the rebellion was simply a way to stop the occupation of earth and would’ve been snuffed out if not for ruby’s actions.. but seeing garnet, seeing how earth and being free from homeworld’s restraints could positvely impact someone.. it changed rose. Besides bringing her and Pearl together, it also made her realize just what her rebellion could bring to people and what a gem could be and even more how precious her future home was. By forming in an act of Love, garnet changed the entire future of gemkind. By staying that way she did so once more. And that’s beautifully. overall an underated, even by me, little masterwork with once again a damn fine message.  We’ll get back to SU soon enough, as I plan to cover the series first full arc as we meet peridot, and see into the souls of our heroines. But first Pride isn’t over yet, and I have one last card on the table as we todd it up a bit with my first look at bojack horseman. Like this if you enjoyed it, comments subscirbe etc etc and don’t be afraid to comission a review for 3 bucks, and until we meet agian, later days.

"The antagonists are racist so that means Steven Universe and Rebbeca Sugar is racist!" Seeing the SU crit types completely miss the point of basic storytelling drove me up the wall. The whole thing with Ruby misspelling Sapphire's name is VERY easy to come to a conclusion to, considering Ruby's and many other gem types are lower on the totem pole, so of course they're going to be less educated.
No no no, the gag about Sapphire’s name is even easier to understand
Ruby was so used to have Future Vision as Garnet, that without it she couldn’t even foresee where to write “Sapphire”.
that’s it
that’s the joke
there is nothing, nothing offensive about it
The Blue Diamond thing, on the surface it does look racist, but if you stop for two (2) seconds and think, you’ll realize that
1) Blue has no concept of human races, let alone the complex dynamics between them. While in the real world human zoos were indeed one of the worst forms of racism, the Human Zoo in SU was created to preserve as many humans as possible from Earth’s colonization. The first zoomans weren’t there to be gawked at, they were there to be saved. (and to make pink shut up but that’s another matter)
2) Blue sees everything that isn’t a Gem as a mindless animal (and even that is a stretch, since Pearls and Rubies are little more than glorified tools). Again, if Connie was white, Blue would have still referred to her as “Pink’s pet”, because Blue doesn’t see “Indian girl” or “POC” or whatever, she sees “lowly human that isn’t even worthy to stand near a Diamond”.
3) BLUE DIAMOND IS A FUCKING ASSHOLE WHOSE FIRST APPEARANCE INVOLVED WANTING TO SHATTER RUBY FOR FUSING WITH SAPPHIRE. You’re not supposed to agree with her! The show clearly doesn’t! I’m sure that children, the main target of SU, can understand the basic concept of “villain says something shitty, they’re bad and they’re wrong”, so why can’t grown ass crits?

Okay so,,, Im just getting into this and I have no clue what’s happening can you help me with like backstories and such? Idk man
@dinah-kitty-52
Okay, 1? I love you, and I wish you luck surviving in this content desert.
I’ve scrolled through some of my old posts to jog my memory, so I’ll give you the best rundown that I can for not having used this blog in a while and having a computer with none of the old CG files. Most of my headcanons or speculations for this au line up with the general consensus for backstory and characters, but little things differ here and there.
Also, please note that some of this au’s content... didn’t age well... From my scan of the Crystal Grumps blog, a few people have technically been removed from this au (which I support) but I will do my best to report things as they were.
Arin: I think he’s a pink rhodochrosite? He was a gem technician on Homeworld and was tasked (I believe by Orange Diamond or Blue Diamond) to do experiments on fusing shattered gems. Arin quietly objected to the work at first but he did his job and made many half-formed abominations. However, he did have one truly successful experiment on Homeworld: the fusion of two gems named Sunshine and Zyanne. Two halves of two gems combined to make someone entirely new: Suzy. Arin defected with Barry and they landed on earth together (I’m pretty sure)
Barry: Orange Diamond. In this au there is no large revolution, but Barry leaves behind his life on Homeworld for reasons that I can’t entirely remember. I think he just wasn’t happy? Also, there was some messed up stuff going on behind closed doors (ninjas, Arin’s work, etc.). He befriended Arin over some time on Homeworld and they escaped together. I don’t think anyone ever made any content about Barry faking his own death like Rose Quartz from the main show, but he may have done it?
Brian & Dan: Brian is a bloodstone and Dan is a Cummingonite because we had to. They are elite warriors, specially produced gems made for their ability to move undetected and to strike before their enemy knew they had company. Dan and Brian are ninjas. They always come in pairs (I think that is well accepted but I can’t remember), so Dan and Brian have been together since the very beginning. However, ninjas have a more nefarious purpose beyond the murder on the tin- ninjas are supposed to kill so thoroughly that there is never a chance of their target reforming. Ninjas shatter and eat other gems. It’s thrown around here and there that ninjas need to eat gems but its honestly just used for angst. These boys can get real sad.
Holly: was a commander in the past? Uh, I’m pretty sure she was shipped with Ross because this was all like 3 years ago so things are very different now.
Kevin: Ok so Kevin was supposed to be some sort of Prophecy Gem? He was a special boy or something. For some people, he was shattered and the two halves of his gem were combined with other stuff to make Matt and Ryan of Supermega, but I never got on that train.
Jacksepticeye: Green Diamond. I can’t remember much about him but he was there.
Jontron: Was Blue Diamond. Slightly malicious but just missed Barry. No longer included in some of the main au sources and has no replacement.
MatPat: Peridot equivalent. I can’t remember how much actual characterization he had.
Mark: He was an amethyst soldier, Jasper equivalent. In some of my writing, he previously commanded Matt and Ryan.
Matt and Ryan: In my writing, they are a pilot and a soldier respectively. Other people had them as halves of the Propechy, created by Arin (I think) after Kevin’s death. People are weird around them, especially Barry as he and Kevin were so close.
Pewdiepie: Yes, I know. He was White Diamond and is no longer included in main circles of the au. I never touched him in the first place. No thank u.
Ross: Remember the ninja partner thing? here’s where it gets sad. Ross was a ninja, left in a kindergarten by mistake for a while with another gem who became his sister. They were ninjas without knowing it, and they were there as partners. However, Ross’s sister’s gem was defective and cracked, and eventually she shattered. He keeps her shards with him when he leaves the kindergarten to live with the Grumps. Dan and Brian figure out that he is a ninja and both try to protect him from the horrors of what he was supposed to be and at the same time try to keep him in check for his safety and everyone else’s. I also did some toying around that he had persuasive powers and that he could (unknowingly) influence gems with his emotions.
Suzy: Like I said before, a fusion of two broken gems from Homeworld. She doesn’t really remember either of her past selves and is pretty stable.
Also NateWantsToBattle is there? I don’t remember much about him.
I have to cut this off because I need to leave for class here in a minute, though I’ve basically covered everyone? Other people try to include other YouTubers of note, but I never did. This au needs a lot of polishing (get the joke?) to fit to 2020 game grumps and everything that has happened in SU/SU: Future (even though we don’t follow that source material too strictly) but I hope you enjoy whatever content is out there now!
I can’t cover the fusions today bc there’s a ton and I don’t remember most of them but they’re there too.

okay so since i couldn’t resist, here’s some info about my random ie:go steven universe!au because i have no energy for online lessons :)
also i didn’t want to post about another au since @/primsbean is making so many posts about her ie:go madoka magica!au which i fUCKING LOVE OHMYGOD- but yeah, alternate universes are my favorite snacc. i have another one to talk about but first let’s say things about the SU one <3
under the cut because it’s LONG - and remember i’m not a native english so i might do some mistakes
okay so first of all, don’t blame me if there will be some events that don’t follow the plot (since i’m NOT remaking steven universe with ie charas!!!!! please keep this in mind) or events that Rebecca Sugar would have never inserted in her show. I respect everyone who worked at steven universe, and my intention is not to say their plot/story was bad, i’m just adding something that did never happen with any chara in the su series to make my au more original, that’s it. peace and love oN THE PLANET EARTH- okay that was the best su song hands down
also keep in mind gems don’t have “gemmic” names (if you know just a little of the su series, you should know all the gems are named after their gem, but i wont give that kind of names to the ie boys - or should i call them gems then? lol)
all the gems - for now - will be males too (as there werent any og male gems in steven universe besides steven, which is an hybrid though so...)
i will list each chara’s gem and ability after the general plot <3
so, the actual protags (though all the charas are!!! these are the two) are Tenma and Fey, who are around 5,000 years old - please if you don’t remember how the gems’ years worked go search it up, there are so many threads about that - and protect inazuma city (insert shooked face) from corrupted gems’ attacks. these attacks are not really frequent and they seem to deal with the situation, but one day they start increasing, being more frequent than usual and also the gems who attack are stronger and different from the previous ones. Fey starts making a theory about a possible new attempt of the homeworld gems (i still haven’t decided which charas will “represent” them, though, since this plot is a kind of season 1 we could say??) to start colonizing Earth via war, as they already did 3,500 years before the current events but failed, with the terrestrial gems rejecting them but also losing a lot of them - since some of them got shattered during the war and others escaped to travel to other planets to start colonizing them theirselves so they could live a new, pacific life. Tenma, at first, isn’t that sure about what Fey said, but as the corrupted gems’ attacks kept increasing he realized he could have been right. as they’re the only two gems who protect their city, they start thinking they should ask help to someone, trying to find more powerful gems.
Fey suggests to search for a trio (whose name is still not 100% sure... i randomly thought about Prism Trio just because I couldn’t remake Crystal Gems ahahah I still don’t know) which protect old war ruins in a forgotten area which is actually near Inazuma City though - but still, only some gems know about it, for example Fey did researches but Tenma knew nothing. This trio will be formed by your local ie:go chaotic trio aka Shindou, Kirino and Kariya (well, if i don’t get any more ideas for the name, then Gay Trio will be alright), who are respectively 7,600, 8,000 and 7,100 years old and actually fought in the first war. They find them fighting against a corrupted fusion, and try to join them to finish it easily and fastly. As they actually give the trio a good help, they still get scolded by them because they went in an area they shouldn’t have been to. However, the trio is still thankful to them for their help, and when Fey tells them about the situation in Inazuma City Shindou replies telling him his theory might be right as he had heard about the increasing attacks, also because the ruins were more attacked than usual in that period. Tenma kindly asks them if they could give their help back, coming with him and Fey and trying to reject the attacks together, even though he thought they’d never agree. Kirino is absolutely okay with that and shows positivity towards Tenma’s idea, while Kariya isn’t that sure since all of them should get used to a new routine, different from the one they were used to in the last millenniums. Shindou, who was neutral at the beginning, proved Kirino right since that would have been the best way to know more about the new attacks, and finally convinces Kariya to join them.
As they get in TenFey’s temple (which is the only thing IDENTICAL to the original SU one, except for the statue in the original version which is absent now), they start organizing their rooms (you know, in the temple there was that one door who led to each gem’s personal room, so the trio starts get used to them), they also keep fighting against new species of corrupted gems who keep attacking the city.
One day, then, all the five gems get to another ruins area, further from the ones the trio used to fight in, and at a moment Tenma remains alone and encounters... bepreparedtocringeihadnoideassorry... Sasuke. Yes, I did a Lion reference using Tenma’s dog instead. Original af, congrats. BY THE WAY,, he understands this gIaNt DoG (ohmygod the lion sounded better,, damn me and my dumb ideas) is related to gems somehow, and when he gets back - since Sasuke disappears after some seconds - tells the others about it, but everyone gets it as a joke and doesnt trust him. In the next fight, though, Sasuke approaches the gems and gives them help (still idk how, gotta rewatch all the lion episodes 382679345 times to get more ideas), so they all understand Tenma was right.
Some days after that, while Tenma is playing with Sasuke (gOOD BOY,,,,, I MEAN GEM,,,,,,,,,,), the dog drags him into a portal/warp (did i spell it good omg my english gets worse every day...) - just as lion sometimes does in the og series, lol - and since this warp keeps being open for some seconds, the other four gems enter it as Tenma might be in trouble alone. They all discover Sasuke led Tenma to an unknown area, which i wanted to be a desert bUT THAT LOOKS A LOT LIKE THE OG SERIES HOLY SHI- so okay, let’s make it a normal land, where there’s a fight going on. They notice a gem fighting a corrupted one all alone, and this gem seems really in need of help so they try everything to save him (oMg SpOiLeRs ThE gEm Is A mALe ToO!!11!!!111!) as they see he doesn’t have any weapon and only fights with the things he finds around himself, such as common rocks. That gem is no one else (???) than Hikaru *cries in i needed to add him hes so baby* who tells the five gems he had never seen such a powerful corrupted gem before and that he was used to reject the previous attacks in that zone more easily, and when Tenma asks him if he wants to come with him and the others to the temple Hikaru accepts without any doubt. As he gets to the temple, the others ask him if he has any weapon, but he tells them he never had the strenght to “develop” one. Perhaps, his ability (the only i’ll reveal here in the plot!!) is really useful, as he can generate light from his gem and make people and other gems blind for a limited amount of time - which, at the beginning, is really short but always increasing. He also wants to practice it as he wants to control the limit of time (for example, blinding people/gems just for a minute even if he could do for ten). When he shows his ability to the other gems, they all get blind... besides Kariya and here the ship sails *coughs* n-nothing, who is actually immune to the light’s effect. Being the only one who doesnt get blind, he starts helping Hikaru to develop his weapon.
I still haven’t thought about the rest of the plot, but there are still three characters I wanted to add. In order: Kyousuke, as an hybrid whose backstory will be way different from Steven’s in the og series (as he wasn’t born an hybrid, neither one of his parents was a gem), then Minaho and Manabe who are gems from another planet (not Homeworld, though) that are usually fused all the time... but, still, I have to think abt a plot ahah
If you’ve got this far, well... congrats? I know this is really long oh damn-
Btw, before I go, here’s the gems’ weapons and abilities as I promised! <3
Tenma: bow and arrow, he can control the wind
Fey: he basically makes grow poisonous creepers from everywhere (kind of inspired from Lapis in the og series as she generated water and could control it), controls nature in general
Shindou: sword, his voice can reach really high pitches so if he screams he can destroy things (and, maybe, he could start shattering gems too... who knows)
Kirino: lance, has a really high speed
Kariya: basically can make strong claws grow from his hands (idk how to describe it holy fuck,,, i cant draw either, if i could i’d have showed u), his ability is telekinesis
Hikaru: well, i don’t wanna spoil his weapon as i’m gonna make another post asap... i already said what his ability was, btw. also!! i didnt mention it before, but his age is around 3000 y/o
Kyousuke: katana, he can read any person’s mind for ten minutes if he had contact with them, same goes with gems but he must touch their gem in order to read their mind (age, in human years: 17)
Minaho: guns, he can understand if someone or something interacted with someone/something else just by smelling it (sounds cringe ik,, btw his age is the same as Manabe’s, 6,700)
Manabe: since i had no more ideas, don’t blame me if this sounds Peridot-ish, but he can actually generate small but powerful robots he can control and fight with, his ability is controlling technology in general.
Another last thing... these nine characters are the same of the other au i mentioned (which is way more calm than this,,, i also have more info abt that, too), so look forward to that too <3
I’mma go now, bye!

This is a full list of everything bad thing that’s ever happened to Steven, from mildly traumatic (but still noteworthy) stuff to extremely traumatic stuff. Please tell me if anything’s been left out here. I do plan on updating this regularly, cause I can tellstuff’s gonna get real in the next few episodes.
This all happens to a pubescent teen who, by the way, never goes to a doctor, physical or emotional, once until near the end of this list.
Season One- Steven struggles with not being strong enough to go on missions with the gems/not being as strong as he needs to be, and trying to activate his mother’s powers.
Steven’s favorite ice cream is taken off the market. This isn’t too major, but it’s where all the trauma began. (Gem Glow)
Steven and the Crystal Gems are attacked by two centipeedles. (Gem Glow)
Steven almost sees the entirety of Beach City be obliterated by a giant crystal eye. (Laser Light Cannon)
Steven repeatedly almost dies during a mission with the Crystal Gems. Well… we’ll get to that later. (Cheeseburger Backpack)
The entirety of Frybo. From seeing that mascot thingy, to seeing the people of Beach City be hurt… oh god. (Frybo)
Steven turns into a giant cluster of cats and almost dies if not for his dad. (Cat Fingers)
Steven and Connie almost drown and get killed by a roller coaster and a corrupted gem. (Bubble Buddies)
Steven almost dies REPEATEDLY during a mission with the gems. (Serious Steven)
Steven almost/does gets physically and emotionally hurt whilst wrestling, but I can’t remember this episode all too well. My apologies. (Tiger Millionaire)
Another gem attack. (Arcade Mania)
Steven gets (nearly) eaten by a giant bird monster, and nearly dies whilst navigating those floating islands. (Giant Woman)
Steven almost dies of old age. This is one of the most traumatic scenes in the whole show. (So Many Birthdays)
Steven and Jerk Friend are almost eaten alive by moss in a horror-movie like episode. (Lars and the Cool Kids)
Onion being Onion. That should be enough said. (Onion Trade)
Steven watches Pearl get poofed, and then has to fight the very hologram that killed her so easily in the first place. (Steve the Sword Fighter)
Steven and Connie get attacked by a giant tennis ball machine thingy. I can’t remember too much of this episode though, sorry. (Lion 2: The Movie)
Another gem attack. I should probably make a full tally for this at the end. (Beach Party)
Steven, after reaching his breaking point, goes into his dead mom’s room and sees everyone he’s even known and/or loved glitch out and die as he tries to escape from this glitched out reality. I… I just… (Rose’s Room)
Steven gets hits by a rock, teased about it, and sees two of his space moms beat up him and the other mom up. (Coach Steven)
Steven watches his friend choke on a spicy donut and almost burn down Beach City and die, all after seeing his other friend respond to the first friend ditching her. (Joking Victim)
Steven creates multiple alternate universes, and watches himself die multiple times. (Steven and the Stevens)
Steven tries to befriend a corrupted ally, but she’s beyond saving. (Monster Buddies)
Steven watches his friend get badly hurt, slowly fall apart, and has suffers emotional trauma whilst trying to live up to his mom. (An Indirect Kiss)
Steven tries to talk to a gem trapped in a mirror for thousands of years, and in doing so, sees the planet’s water be removed. He and his moms get blamed for it, and he, his moms, his friend, and his dad all go to try to get it back. They all are either badly hurt, or are nearly drowned. He sees his dad, in his van, be thrown far away, causing him to break a leg. Steven now has to reconsider how morally good the gems are. (Mirror Gems)
Steven’s dad, who has a broken leg, interferes in his life negatively (though also positively), though this is eventually resolved. (House Guest)
Steven and Bird Mom almost die in a violent accident, all has his dad watches in helpless horror. (Space Race)
Steven, Sadie, and Lars are all trapped on a tropical island for a month, and are attacked by an invisible monster. (Island Adventure) ((btw, this is the first episode to break the streak of every SU episode up until this point having something notably traumatic happen to Steven.))
Steven is abducted by a crazed conspiracist jerk whilst trying to make him feel better about himself. He’s knocked out and examined. (Keep Beach City Weird)
Steven attempts to run away with his friend Connie, though the bus they’re on his forcibly stopped by a giant fusion between his three moms. (Fusion Cuisine)
Steven’s watermelons come to life and attack his entire city, then his moms. His favorite one, the only kind one, is slaughtered by the others. Also, Onion and the crazed conspiracist. (Watermelon Steven)

Steven and Connie, while fused together, are… hit on, to say at the least… by Annoying Douchebag. (Alone Together)
Steven almost suffocates and… dies repatedly Also, he nearly freezes to death. Also ALSO, he slowly goes insane due to stress. (Warp Tour)
Steven learns that, in Cheeseburger Backpack, where he nearly dies repeatedly (eh, sort of), the mission that proved to be semi-traumatic to him was actually a test, making him doubt his abilities as a team member. He takes another test, which only proves that his moms still doubt his abilities as a team member. (The Test)
Steven becomes extremely paranoid, almost to the point where he fears he’ll die at any given moment. This is extremely traumatic. (Future Vision)
Steven and Mom #2 run away, and are almost both killed by an unstable injector. Steven and Bird Mom then watch Mom #2 have a breakdown.
This entire episode. (Horror Club)
Steven sees multiple futures where the following happens: Connie catches a cold, he, his dad, and Connie all die in a violent car accident with her father, and the entire universe collapses due to a crystal breaking or something. (Winter Forecast)
Steven is traumatized of Dead Mom by his Mom #2, and so is his dad traumatized. Before this, he watches Mom #2 and his dad slip away from not only his life, but reality as a whole. This is very traumatic. (Maximum Capacity)
Steven and the gems struggle to fight off large balls that have some unknown malicious intent, and then he’s almost killed by Angry Dorito for the first of many times in the show.
This whole episode, from the emotional trauma to the near-death experiences. (Rose’s Scabbard)

Steven is traumatized by the confused corupted monsters from Nightmare Hospital/Keeping it Together, and later by their broken souls. Steven tries to heal a corrupted general, but can’t. This is a bit of an emotionally scarring episode. (Monster Reunion)
Rock Face comes back, and tries to get back with Flying Water Girl, all to Steven’s horror. He’s also physically hurt by this, and sees his dad lose like, 500,000 thousand dollars or something. (Alone at Sea)
Steven and Connie have to directly face more corrupted monsters led by Rock Face. (Gem Hunt)
Rock Face attacks Steven, Connie, and Mom #2. (Crack the Whip)
Steven and Mom #2 duke it out. This causes more way physical trauma than emotional. (Steven vs. Amethyst)

Steven, Mom #2, and Metal-Bending Dorito fight Rock Face. They win, but not without our good ol’ friend Physical Trauma™.

Steven and Jerk Friend have an emotional breakdown while trying to get back to Earth. (Stuck Together)

Steven and Connie are thrown in prison for High Crimes and Misdemeanors™. (Together Alone)
Steven astral projects into a watermelon, loses his leg, and dies of exhaustion. (Escapism)
Uh… where do even begin? Steven has an identity-crisis of a dream, is attacked emotionally and forced to cry, witnesses a fight break out, sees his aunts get turned into lifeless zombies, almost ses his moms get shattered, is nearly crushed, fights a giant robot, sees his moms turn into lifeless zombies, doubt his entire existence and emotionally breaks down, has his gem removed, and becomes a weak, helpless child for a bit. (Change Your Mind)
Steven Universe The Movie- Noodle Woman fights well.
Steven’s entire planet is assaulted and nearly destroyed by a giant injector.
Steven fights Noodle Woman, causing physical trauma, especially during and at the end of the fight.
Steven sees his moms be killed, and lose all their character development.
Steven almost sees Lesbian Red Rock die.
Steven becomes increasingly more exhausted after he loses his powers.
Steven fights Noodle Woman again, and has a nose-bleed. This brings him a lot of physical and emotional trauma.
Steven his knocked from like, a kilometer in the air, onto an injector by Noodle Woman. This injector then explodes.

Steven’s mental and physical state gets worse, and he breaks down. (Growing Pains)
Steven gets into a violent car crash after breaking down because of how bad his childhood has been. (Mr. Universe)
Steven begins to lose himself, remains un-helped by his friends and family, and begins training with Jasper, where he’s subjected to TONS of physical trauma. He gets crushed, slammed, beaten, and etc. He also deals with the emotional trauma of having shattered Jasper. Yeah. (Fragments)
Miscellaneous physical and emotional trauma. (Homeworld Bound)
OH MY GOSH STEVEN’S SILENTLY HAVING A BREAKDOWN, BUT HE’S PRETENDING HE’S FINE (Everything’s Fine)

(Goodbye Steven Universe.
You were a show we didn’t deserve)

Okay but, how would Kirishima work with Bakugou in the Steven Universe au? Also, what would kirishima be?
That's a very good question my dear anon, thank you for asking that! 💕 I admit I didn't think about that too much yet, but I'll gladly bring more of my attention to this AU if you want to hear me out! (i am going to assume you are familiar with Steven Universe so if anything I wrote here is not understandable for you feel free to ask me for some additional explanation!)
As for Kirishima, I defnitely see him as this strong type of gem and a part of the same warrior cast in the Homeworld society as Jasper Bakugou is. It's hard to tell right of the bat, but I think he would make a nice Red Agate, Red Jasper, Fire Opal, a Red Quartz, Carnelian, oooor perhaps a Red Topaz...? I'm definitely going to do some proper research on gemstones and Steven Universe lore (which I more or less forgot while it was on a hiatus lol) before drawing the SU Kirishima. I might find something that would fit into the SU lore just right and also match his character with its meaning as well!
Kirishima definitely has a belly placed gemstone! That's because of the fandom theory/joke I like that gems with their gemstones in their bellies are natural born sweethearts. The theory says that a gem placement reflects the personality, and a tummy gem would mean Kirishima is driven by love and instinct.
As for Steven Universe AU Kiribaku I have two scenarios in my mind so far!
In the first one Jasper Bakugou serves the Diamond Authority along with Kirishima, who is supposed to he his lower ranked sidekick/helper/protector, something like a mix of what Peridot was for Jasper and what Ruby was for Sapphire. Expect for the fact that even though the Homeworld cast system works as it works, Jasper Bakugou refuses to think of Kirishima as someone lower in rank than him and treats him like his equal. This is considered to be quite controversial, but majority of the Homeworld society just... fears Jasper Bakugou too much to try messing with him in that matter. In this scenario both Jasper Bakugou and Kirishima come from Homeworld.
In the second one though gem Kirishima emerged on Earth! He's absolutely in love with Earth and its life forms and finds pleasure in discovering them. He thinks of Earth as his home. Jasper Bakugou would be someone he only occasionally hears rumours of and admires from afar. I imagine his first meeting with Jasper Bakugou to be rather explosive, with the angry raspy Jaspy Baku sent to Earth on a hostile mission ordered by the Diamond Authority. Kiri would consider him threateningly beautiful while getting his ass kicked by him in a very exciting manly battle. (btw Kiri gets his ass kicked because he's considered a traitor in Homeworld after he chose Earth's side in the war). However their second meeting...? Let's say Jasper Bakugou screwed something up and got stuck on Earth, or deemed unworthy by Homeworld even, after all he sacrificed for it. Thus resulting in him breaking down. Here comes Kirishima! I imagine some angst and fluff, with their relation slowly developing as Kirishima shows Jasper Bakugou the beauty of Earth and its independence, teaching him that he can be his own gem instead of serving anyone, that he can be free and happy and do whatever he wants. Needless to say they are both very ridiculously gay for each other. They 100% accidentaly fuse at some point and they both find it to be weird, scary and confusing, but at the same time a pleasant and amazing new experience.
Wow, I'm sorry this ended up being quite long! I got really excited with getting your question and being able to think of all of this and write it down, and I already have a lot of ideas for drawings 💙💙💙

Crystal Musings: So, I finally got to see Steven Universe: The Movie
Tumblr media
Okay. Since the events of the movie are still fresh in my mind, I’m just gonna points out the things that stood out to me the most and give my most blunt thoughts on them. Spoilers ahead for those who haven’t seen the flick yet:
So our main villain revealed as a gem called Spinel used to be the best friend/ playmate to Pink Diamond who she basically abandoned somewhere after she got her colony. Ah yes, glad to see that Crewniverse got one more card up their sleeves in the ole ‘Pink Diamond/ Rose Quartz is the reason for everything that goes wrong in Steven Universe’ trick box.
Honestly, I'll have to admit that Spinel was my favourite part of this entire movie. I really, really adored her character and I wouldn't be surprised if everyone in the Steven Universe fandom basically became the Diamonds with Spinel by the credits. 'Let us adore you!'
Speaking of the Diamonds, their presence in this movie was rather underwhelming; at least to me.  I get that this movie wasn't about them but...I dunno, I feel like the Diamonds became those kind of smothering parents who want to be around their kids a lot even when they're adults with their own lives. I guess that was the joke with the Diamonds for the movie. Nonetheless that still didn’t stop me from scratching my head when they randomly appeared on Earth after the main conflict had ended just to announce that they wanted to stay on Earth to be next to Steven.
And what's odd is the Diamonds' reaction to Earth. The Diamonds have been to Earth before so seeing them act as if it was their first time there was odd. Did the movie forget that all the corrupted gems were healed on Earth? Or did I forget a detail cause if my memory served correctly, the Diamonds came to Earth after Steven changed White Diamond’s mind so that she could help him alongwith Yellow and Blue Diamond to heal on the corrupted gems on Earth in Rose/Pink Diamond’s old fountain which is ON EARTH.
As a matter of fact, when we last left Steven in the series, we left him on Earth. But at the start of the movie he was on Homeworld so...I...okay???
While the Diamond ending part was random for me, at least it led to Spinel getting her happy ending. Even though I really wanted for Spinel to stay on Earth with Steven and the Gems, her being adopted by the Diamonds as their new surrogate daughter replacement for Pink is...uh....I guess it's a decent ending for both Spinel and the Diamonds.
Tumblr media
Overall, the Steven Universe Movie was good. Enjoyable. But...it did make me go 'huh' at the end. I figured this movie would be a segway into the next upcoming season of SU. But with the way how the movie introduced a conflict and wrapped it up in the same beat, I'm wondering what is actually next?
What else is there for the series to wrap up? I feel like the entire plot of this movie could've been its own season for the Crewniverse to use to end off Steven Universe all together. But nah, it's still going. So, for real, what is next?
On a different note, allow me to screech about on thing---
STEVEN AND GREG FUSION! WHAT!
So it is confirmed that Steven can indeed fuse with other humans besides Connie. Y'see this is where I feel like the movie plot should've been its own season.
Greg not being able to fuse with Rose was a small thing in their past. It was kind of its own episode and feel like Steven fusing with his dad could've been a bigger deal. Something significant to both of their characters.
Heck, perhaps them fusing should’ve been something that happened before the movie during a period in the series narrative that was very meaningful to both Greg and Steven. Oh! Like when Greg was taken by Blue Diamond and placed in Pink’s old Human Zoo forcing Steven to go out to Space to get him back?
Speaking of which, WHAT HAPPENED TO THE HUMAN ZOO? The Movie places the plot at 2 years after the end of the last season but by the end of the last season, we got no confirmation about what became of the humans in Pink Diamond’s old zoo.
Are they still there? Were they freed and brought back to Earth? Are the humans born and raised in Pink’s old human zoo part of Little Homeworld? Forget Spinel, what happened to those humans?
I feel like Steven fusing with his dad could’ve been a good plot to tie up the events of the human zoo since that’s a plot thread still left incomplete by the series. But...nah, I guess the Crewniverse needed a fun new fusion for the movie and decided Steven and Greg would be fine.
Tumblr media
Ok. Sure. I do dig Steven + Greg's fusion though. I think their fusion is the first male Gem fusion since its both Steven and his dad. But...what is he called? Steg? Steveg? Greven? Gregen? I think I'll call him Steg cause it's the best sounding one of the names.
Tumblr media
So yeah...that's all I gotta say about Steven Universe: the Movie.
It was good but...honestly I feel like if the Crewniverse wanted to seriously end the series now, they could. As a matter of fact, now that the Diamond conflict is pretty much over, if Steven Universe wanted to run for one last season to tie up some lose threads from the previous season before calling it the end, I wouldn’t blame it.
As much as I love Steven Universe, I don’t want it to become one of those shows that end up being dragged out for so long to the point that the audience could clearly see its showrunners running out of material to keep the show going.
From its first season, SU was a series where you wasn’t sure where it was going to go until the later half of the season when all the Diamond business started to enter the plot. The Diamond Saga was a major plot thread for most of the show. Now that plot is over.
I just...I just don’t want SU to become something like the Simpsons. Dragged out for too long. I feel like the Crewniverse have told their story. If there is honestly more to it then I guess cool. I have a hard time believing that now and  the movie didn’t help.
I keep asking WHAT IS SERIOUSLY NEXT FOR STEVEN UNIVERSE?
I thought the movie would shed light on that. It didn’t. Just left me with the same questions that need answers.
I guess for now, all I can do is leave it at that. Overall, at least we got a good movie out of it.

Steven Universe Podcast: Fan Celebration
This is an outline of the Steven Universe Podcast regarding “Fan Celebration”: an issue of the podcast in which voice actors and storyboarders answer fan questions. No volume number or episode number was given for this one. The official description:
It's a celebration of the fandom! Zach Callison (voice of Steven), Deedee Magno Hall (voice of Pearl), Michaela Dietz (voice of Amethyst), Matthew Moy (voice of Lars), and Storyboard Artists Miki Brewster and Lamar Abrams tackle everything from gem weapon of choice to creating their own storylines to favorite scenes and hardest ones to voice and create to memorable studio moments and best-loved characters!
This is a long podcast with a long summary, so as usual I will give you a bulleted list of highlights, followed by a detailed summary.
Highlights:
Miki Brewster’s favorite characters to board are Amethyst & Ruby. Character reactions are inspired by what she thinks a fan would want to see, and designs she loves are overgrown old Gem stuff on Earth. In the SU world, her weapon would be a greatsword.
Matthew Moy would have related to Pearl or Lars most as a child. His hardest thing to VA for has been Lars’s switch to being a confident space captain. He feels connection to characters he plays is vital. His memorable moment with the Crew was finally meeting Estelle after about four years of doing the show. A line that sums up his character would be just groaning about what Steven has gotten him into. His favorite episodes to be part of were probably “Lars of the Stars” and “The Good Lars.”
Lamar Abrams would have related most to Sapphire as a child. His hardest thing to VA for was the energetic stylings of Zooman Wy-Six. Lamar leans on direction to properly play characters and doesn’t necessarily need to relate to them. His memorable moment with the Crew was improvising a chant to egg Sour Cream on in “Lars and the Cool Kids.” A line that sums up his character (Buck) is “That’s nasty. I don’t like nasty stuff.” His favorite episode to be part of was maybe “Shirt Club.”
Deedee Magno Hall thinks the thing her character would never say would involve enthusiastically ordering food. If she was in the SU world, her weapon would be an antibacterial spritzer. The most fun part of her job is the people she works with. The hardest scenes for her involve when Pearl screams. Deedee’s favorite thing to record is “all the songs.” If she could write an episode, she would have it be musical and involve a tour of the SU world on a flying carpet. she thinks jewelry in the SU world would be an alternate way to protect your friends and keep them close.
Michaela Dietz thinks the thing her character would never say would be a sincere “I love you” (though she would SHOW it), or maybe saying she’d had enough food. If she was in the SU world, her weapon would be a cannon that shoots “the bits.” The most fun part of her job is the people she works with. The hardest scenes for her involve talking during a song. She says she sometimes has to burp on cue and has trouble doing it. Michaela’s top episode to record for may have been “The Question.” If she could write an episode, she would have the Crystal Gems writing a cartoon. In answering what food Amethyst would NOT like, she thinks it’d be anything with nutritional value or superfoods. And she thinks jewelry in the SU world would be like being able to carry your friends around.
Zach Callison thinks the thing his character would never say would be about loving his mom (his feelings for her are weird, and he doesn’t know her), or that Steven would never insult a restaurant’s cooking and send it back. If he was in the SU world, his weapon would be a gun blade. The most fun part of his job is the people he works with. The hardest scenes for him were doing all the Stevens in “Steven and the Stevens.” A funny VA moment for him was when he and Grace Rolek had to stuff huge marshmallows in their mouths for a full-mouth line. Zach’s top episodes to be part of were big turning point episodes like “Jailbreak” and “Mr. Greg.” He thinks the biggest difference when recording for a video game is the increase in effort noises and being trusted to know their characters more. If he could write an episode, he’d have Peridot and Steven hunting down a mob boss in a gritty episode where they’d fuse into a tiny Fusion at the end. He thinks jewelry in the SU world would be like keeping Gems as pets and would horrify Homeworld.
The detailed summary is below!
[Archive of Steven Universe Podcast Summaries]
Miki Brewster is first up; Miki is the storyboarder who wrote and boarded on the episodes "The Question" and "Reunited" (among other episodes). She answers these questions:
Q: Who's your favorite character to storyboard?
A: Ruby or Amethyst. She just thinks Amethyst is cute and Ruby is excitable and fun, and her square head is fun and easy to draw.
Tumblr media
Q: How do you come up with how characters will respond to situations?
A: What would a fan really want to see this character do? If you're a fan, you could watch a whole show just for a character, so reactions should be about what makes that character unique and worth watching.
Q: What kind of motifs in music or design are most interesting to you?
A: Gem architecture on Earth, like overgrown temples and crashed ships.
Q: If you were in the SU world, what would your Gem weapon be?
A: A greatsword. They're cool and you can hit hard with them.
Matthew Moy and Lamar Abrams are the next guests.
Q: Which character would you have resonated with most as a child?
A: Matthew would have resonated with Pearl (because she worries so much) or Lars. Lamar would have resonated with Sapphire (because she's quiet and introspective the way he was--he would have identified with her diplomacy, and she's trying to make people understand).
Q: What has been the hardest scene to do voice acting for?
A: Matthew feels it was when Lars became the space captain. It's a big switch, being confident, such a contrast to his teen angst from before. Lamar said he has an easy time voicing Buck, so his most difficult was voicing Wy-Six (he can't remember if it was Jay-Ten or Wy-Six, he always gets those two mixed up). It's so energetic and exuberant and he says it was tiring to do for a whole session. He can't believe other people have to voice characters who yell and scream.
Tumblr media
Q: How much do you feel for your characters, how do you relate to them?
A: Matthew feels like acting requires it; connection is vital. Lamar thinks it's just about getting across the right feeling even if you can't personally relate. Rebecca helps with the direction. He suggests he might sometimes be told to make Buck "more disinterested," and Matthew wants to know if he's ever actually gotten that direction. He thinks maybe, or at least he's sometimes told to try stuff in a higher or lower tone.
Q: What kind of antics do the voice actors get up to? Any funny or memorable times recording?
A: Matthew remembers meeting Estelle finally like four years into the job. During the pilot he recorded with 80% of the cast but not her, and he finally got to meet her and introduced himself awkwardly, and she's like "Hey Lars, nice to finally meet you." Lamar suggests maybe it was almost like what Garnet herself would do in that situation, and Matthew enthusiastically agrees, suggesting "Oh my gosh we're all the same." Lamar remembers finally meeting her after a while too, and he met her outside the studio when she was probably going to get something to eat. He saw her with her glasses on and thought she looked cool but later realized that was probably Estelle. Lamar remembers one time he was voicing Buck with Brian Posehn (Sour Cream) and Reagan Gomez (Jenny) and they had to do a little chant egging Sour Cream on while other characters would be talking over it, and he thought that was fun. (The improvised chant he describes is the one at the end of "Lars and the Cool Kids.") They love the "side walla that nobody hears." Lamar always hopes someone notices those things.
Tumblr media
Q: If you could sum up your character in one quote or moment what would it be?
A: After McKenzie jokes that Matthew should say "bingo bongo" or she'll be disappointed, Matthew says that doesn't really sum up Lars 'cause he's a complicated fellow. He just makes a reluctant/frustrated grunt and says "that sums up Lars." He adds, "Ugghhh, Steven!" That's Lars's inner monologue all the time: "Steven, what did you get me into?" Lamar remembers writing one of the first Buck episodes in "Lars and the Cool Kids" when Buck is reacting to Jenny's story about doggy-do. "That's nasty. I don't like nasty stuff." Lamar loves how he doesn't exclaim or get into a lot of emotion: it's just "that's nasty, nope."
Q: What would you say has been your top favorite episode to be a part of?
A: Matthew loved "Lars of the Stars," and "the baking episode" ("The Good Lars"), the whole Wanted arc was really cool. Lamar isn't sure--he guesses he loved in "Shirt Club" when Buck is being a jerk about Steven's art, "this is bad and it's funny," and then when Steven gets back at him shooting his "vote for my dad" art out of the t-shirt cannons and some people are laughing at Buck's art, he sheds a single tear. Lamar loves that, "wow he DOES have emotions." He also really liked that it was a bonding episode with his dad and an episode about being better friends with Steven.
Tumblr media
The next group is Deedee Magno Hall, Michaela Dietz, and Zach Callison.
Q: What is something that you think your favorite SU character would never say?
A: Deedee says, "Can I get a double double with cheese, please?" (They all laugh.) Michaela says she thinks Amethyst would never sincerely say "I love you." Deedee objects, but Michaela says she would show it but not say it, and wonders if she made the others sad by saying that. Zach says he has a dark one: that Steven would never express feelings of love toward his mom, because he doesn't really know her like that. Deedee says she feels like she's gonna cry. Zach says they've literally never met and she's causes tons of problems in his life. McKenzie was not prepared for answers like this because she expected them to be more like Deedee's funny one, so Michaela jumps on that and says Amethyst would never say "no thank you, I've had enough." And on the subject of food, Zach says Steven would never say "THIS FOOD IS TERRIBLE! TAKE IT BACK!" (He says it in Steven's voice.) He'd never do that in a restaurant. Michaela thinks he'd just silently eat it and think something positive about what he could imagine the bad food tastes like. Zach begins to chant "Chew . . . swallow" in Steven's voice.
Tumblr media
Q: If you were in the SU world, what would your Gem weapon be?
A: Zach says maybe an anime style gun blade. Like a musket. Michaela says probably a cannon that shoots out "the bits." Deedee says anti-bacterial spritzer. They agree that it fights germs. Michaela agrees that that is SO in character.
Q: What is the most fun part of your job?
A: Zach says "This right here." They all say it's great to see friends, and Michaela adds, "AND seeing Zach and Deedee. Just kidding, they ARE my friends." Deedee says she's getting so many wrinkles from smiling due to being around these guys.
Q: What was the hardest scene to voice act for?
A: Deedee doesn't like when she has to scream, because it's hard on her voice. Michaela has a hard time with speaking during a song, because she slips into like a weird Broadway projection and has to remind herself that that's not Amethyst. Zach adds that the timing on that is really difficult. For Zach, he says it took a lot of time to do all the many Stevens in "Steven and the Stevens," and there was lots of screaming.
Tumblr media
Q: Do you remember any particularly funny moments from when you were recording?
A: Zach immediately answers "No. None. Zero." Michaela agrees and says there is no laughing and it's a very serious show. Deedee bursts in with disagreement and reassurance that they are joking and there's SO much laughter. Deedee says efforts are the most fun. Zach loved when Robert was looping one of Deedee's "???" reactions into the booth. Zach loved when he had to use jumbo marshmallows for him and Grace to put in their mouths to make full-mouth noises. Michaela chimes in that sometimes she has to burp on cue and that's hard for her. Zach can burp on cue and offers to do it for Michaela, and demonstrates.
Q: What would you say has been your top favorite episode to be a part of?
A: Zach says "Mr. Greg" and "Jailbreak"--any episode that was a huge turning point like that. Deedee loves "Mr. Greg" too. Zach loves Deedee's performance of "It's Over, Isn't It," and Deedee responds "No, YOUR section was great," and they just keep saying "No you're great, no YOU'RE great." Michaela's was probably the "Ruby Rider one" ("The Question"). She loved the engagement at the end. Zach chimes in to say the wedding episode ("Reunited") was great too, and the song was very difficult, but the others loved hearing him sing "Let's Only Think About Love." That song is almost four minutes long! Deedee loves ALL the songs.
Tumblr media
Q: How is recording for a video game different from recording for the show?
A: They agree it's SO different; Zach says it's partly that they have a different crew recording them, with a different voice director. Michaela feels they depend on them to know their characters more in the video game recordings. Zach agrees they trust them more, while on the show the boarders and crew know as much and more than the voice actors. Zach says on video games they have to make a lot more effort noises and weird command prompts, so many details. Michaela agrees about the efforts, and Deedee is sad that they're not in the room together. Michaela adds, "so we cry the whole time, it's crazy."
Q: If you could write your own episode, what would it be about and what would your character be doing?
A: Zach immediately says DO NOT LET ME DO THIS. Michaela says she would write an episode about the Crystal Gems writing a cartoon episode about themselves. Pearl would say "and then I would say a joke! I'd be the comic relief!" Zach thinks they'd have to look at the camera and break the fourth walls. Deedee says she'd love an episode where the whole thing is a song, even more so than "Mr. Greg." It'd have to have a flying carpet scene where they can see the whole SU world, through music. Zach says he'd want a gritty detective show with Steven and Peridot taking on a mob boss, with them talking in deeper voices, Peridot going "those clods are gonna get what's coming to them!" And he'd want them to fuse at the end because he really wants the Steven/Peridot Fusion. Michaela prompts him to "say the theory," and Zach says he just wants that Fusion to be half the size instead of double the size. For shorty squad rep. There's so much utility to a tiny Fusion!
Q: Is there any food Amethyst DOESN'T like?
A: Michaela says: Anything with nutritional value? Superfoods? Anything that lacks textural integrity--she thinks Amethyst would not have much fun with baby food or applesauce, she just loves to chew and have something to do.
Q: How would Gems react to the concept of jewelry?
A: Michaela thinks it'd be like Baby Bjorns, they'd be carrying their friend around, like Amethyst could run around with friends on her wrist. Zach feels like it'd be too much like keeping Gems as pets, and Homeworld would be horrified by our civilization enslaving their people. Jewelry is totally how come Homeworld is mad at us! Deedee says when they're poofed jewelry could be a way to keep them close and safe. Zach worries the jewelry casing would break when the Gem came back. Deedee worries they'd fall through a hole in a pocket. Zach suggests if someone complimented your necklace you could be like "thanks these are my cousins!" Michaela suggests Bismuth would have a "Bedazzled fanny pack." Deedee says "maybe a Pearl Pouch."
There's no information about a next podcast episode.
