Long Rant about the Watcher Thing

The thing about what's happening with Watcher is that I'm a musician. I understand deeply the difficulties that come with an artist making their art and needing money and the relationship with the people that art is for. So I understand that Watcher needs money to pay their employees and maintain their business.

That said, they revealed that they have 25 employees (half of which are nepotism hires and friends from BuzzFeed) and that one episode of Ghost Files costs "hundreds of thousands of dollars." (Ghost Files being their most expensive show by bar, not their average spending habits per Watcher episode)

I understand from a few people I've seen who are in their Patreon that they make at least 100k per month from the patreon. And then there's the money they get from youtube itself from the views. And then there's the money they get from the ads.

Now I understand that Ryan said this decision came down to primarily 2 things: the ad companies were making them feel stifled with what they could do (which they don't explain how), and they want more money to be able to keep up a higher production quality.

I'm going to skip past the thing about the ads. They never specified how the ad companies were making them change their content in a way that made them feel unsatisfied. I can't speak or provide any opinions on why they want so badly to escape needing ad deals.

But I can talk about the higher production quality they speak of and that's specifically because Ryan said that they wanted to pay for a higher production quality FOR US. "For you guys."

We... we didn't ask for higher production. This is NOT a decision they need to make on our account. I understand and respect if they aren't creating on they level they want. But it's odd that they're speaking towards not being able to afford their current spending habits, as if this is something we asked them to do.

I've read a lot of comments about this and I agree with a lot of you that it's odd that this decision to switch to streaming coincides with the return of Worth It, a show that when produced by Steven, seems like it could easily cost just as much as Ghost Files to produce.

I understand why it feels like this is all Steven's fault. His vibes in the video today, compared to Ryan and Shane, made it seem like he was the most excited about it. It's Steven that has been highlighted multiple times as the business man, the one who makes the financial decisions. It's Steven's shows on Watcher that get canceled after one or two seasons, meanwhile Ryan and Shane's shows just keep going to 5 seasons and beyond.

Shane even said it explicitly, that there are "shows that didn't do as well on youtube, that might do better on a streaming service."

But most of the fans DO watch Watcher for Ryan and Shane, they always have. Steven's shows don't do as well. When Watcher brings in a new host and makes a new show for them, those shows do even worse.

I know this upsets Ryan, he's been very vocal about wanting Watcher to expand beyond himself and Shane. He wants his company to be successful regardless of whether he's in front of the camera or not.

But I feel like this step is trying to force it. Right now, this is still Ryan and Shane's channel. This is why we're here. The people haven't latched onto Steven as much, and the attempts to bring in new hosts have been unsuccessful.

There are lots of comments floating around about why Watcher didn't do what Rhett and Link did and open up youtube membership. Or why didn't they host more live events. Or why didn't they do more livestreams. These all could have been fantastic ideas that wouldn't betray the fans.

Because I do think they forgot that their fanbase is largely women in their 20s. People are right in bringing up the cost of living crisis, in bringing up how many subscription services we're already subscribed to. And my heart goes out to the international viewers who can't access the website at all in their country and the ones who can't afford it because Watcher forgot to consider the currency difference.

I feel that they have betrayed their fanbase. I remember when Watcher started and Ryan admitted he was scared no one would watch. And then we showed up for them because we loved them and what they did.

But now most of the fans can't or won't follow them where they're going. And I think Ryan might know this too from the way he said If this is goodbye, it's been fun.

I wish they would have tried other things before hard launching a streaming service. I wish they would have had a long game plan to get to the place they wanted to be as a company and as creatives.

I feel betrayed but I also don't want this company going bankrupt. If they go bankrupt, then we truly have lost them forever. I hope they take a look at the overwhelming backlash, at their falling subscriber numbers, and I hope they reconsider doing this.

I know I complain a lot about the stupidity of passwords, but.......THEY ARE SO STUPID. I apparently subscribe to some Hulu / Disney Plus bundle. I don't even watch this bundle. I knew I subscribed to Hulu but I didn't know it came with Disney Plus. Disney Plus is raising its prices. I don't want to pay this raised price, since I don't even watch the platform. So I click on the link to change my subscription.

It says, "Oh, no! Is this you???? Check your phone to verify!!!!" So I check my phone to verify it's me.

Now it says, "Okay, you verified it's you, NOW GIVE US YOUR PASSWORD." Okay, but didn't I just verify it's me????? But okay, fine, I put in my password. Nope, apparently not my password. I try another password. Still not my password. So I click the link to change my password.

"Oh, no!" it says. "Are you sure this is you?????? Check your phone to verify!!!!!!"

I once again verify YES, IT'S ME.

Now I have to choose a new password. I put it one I just tried. Apparently, it was one of my last five passwords (for this service I literally never use). I try another password. Apparently I have also used THAT one before. I try another password. It gets rejected as "too easy to guess." OH MY GOD. Finally, I accept the "suggested strong password" that I will never in a million years remember for this service. THANK GOD I AM ABOUT TO CANCEL THIS SERVICE.

I know, I know, I'm supposed to use a password manager for all of this nonsense. And I do. On my laptop. I was on my phone changing the password. I know you can probably link the two up, I haven't done it yet, I guess, Idk. So I painstakingly copied the "strong password" into my password manager on my laptop. In the meantime, my phone assured me, don't worry, it's saved the password into its memory so I don't have to remember it! Because it's obviously more secure for me to have this nonsense password that the phone constantly being used to verify my identity knows.

I just really hate everything about the password situation, like, it infuriates me every time I have to deal with it and it extra-infuriates me that we all go through it like this is a normal and reasonable thing to be doing. ARGH.

I've always been fascinated by how entry-level writing "jobs" can expect their applicants to do things that would get any other employer sued.

For example:

I recently applied to write scripts for a company that's doing audio dramas. They aren't a fan/amateur organization -- they're doing this for profit and charge for subscriptions to their shows.

They recently contacted me and told me that they wanted to move forward with my application due to my publication and production history and obvious experience! Sweet! A little suspicious that they didn't ask me to provide a writing sample, though....

So the next step in my application would be... to write the next episode of one of their series.

Not "write a spec script with our characters in our settings," nor was it "Pitch us a concept for an episode." No, they wanted a complete script for the next episode of the series.

And since they knew I would have to listen to all of the previous episodes to do justice to the project, they of course linked me to a Google Drive with the previous episodes for my reviewHAHA NO, they instead gave me a discount code so that I could buy one month of their subscription plan at a lower rate. Of course, if I didn't cancel, it would renew at the regular price the next month.

And hidden away in the middle of the email: "Our remuneration for writers is a percentage of new subscriptions when they subscribe through the link on your episode page."

So no pay if current subscribers discover my series. No pay if new subscribers click away to a different series before they subscribe. No pay if they click on one of the earlier episodes of the series, even though I'm now the head writer on the series. Just... hope and pray that a bunch of people sign up specifically on the pages where I wrote something, otherwise there's not going to be a dime for me as the writer.

And I bet somebody in their HR department is looking at my lack of response to their email and saying, "Well, gee, I guess nobody's willing to put the work in these days."

No, it's just that if I'm going to write a dramatic script for little or no pay, I can pretty much do that on my own. I don't have to make somebody else rich for that pleasure.

I want to know that if I'm taking a job as a writer, I'm going to get paid when I write something you tell me to. If all you say is "Maybe -- provided we can link people subscribing directly to your work and there's no chance they subscribed for any other reason," then you're not really offering me an opportunity. You're offering me... exposure? Just with an asterisk next to it that says, "There's really money here! We swear! Trust us!"

A new commission tier on my Patreon has officially been opened! It costs $20 and will allow you to commission me one item for each month that you are subscribed, while also allowing you to access all of my sims 4 content including exclusives!

The further details are mentioned in the Patreon tier itself, it will also be explained in this post as well. Please read everything before making any purchases! Refunds are only allowed in certain circumstances which are explained further in this post!

Monthly Tier:

The $20 monthly tier will allow you to commission me once per month that you are subscribed to that tier. If you would like more items within the month please contact me via dms in Patreon so we can further discuss options. Everything you request unless specifically stated not to be, will be uploaded to my Patreon for all patrons and eventually released for the public! You can inform me if you would like to keep the commission private. If you commission something you are not allowed to reupload or claim as your own, if you would be interested in this option please contact me first via dms before posting anything. Please have any photos or references available for me so the process is easier and takes less time. Refunds:

Only under specific conditions will items not be refunded. For example if all work has already been completed and all files have been sent to the patron, a refund will not be issued. Another circumstance a refund will not be issued is if the patron requests a refund after the month that item was commissioned has passed. Commissions take time so please plan accordingly! Your commission might not be done in the month you request it, if you are still a patron to the same tier you can still choose another item to be made along side the original item from the prior month(s). All items will be sent once they are finished. If you have cancelled your subscription to the $20 tier while a commission is still on going you have the right to request a refund (while still in the active commission month), or subscribe to a lower tier to keep the commission for that month active. Any tier that you downgrade to such as the supporter tier will still be accepted and the commission will continue. If you are not active on any tier I will not be able to contact you and therefore the commission will be halted until you are apart of an active tier (a refund will not be issued in this case unless previously stated before the month of the commission request has ended). Please plan accordingly for any situation especially for the availability for refunds!

Refunds will be sent through Patreon unless there is somehow an error, if this happens Paypal will be used as a replacement method for the refund. All refunds sent through Patreon are returned as they are from Patreon itself meaning that if the amount is not exact, it is not my will but Patreons.

I have the right to cancel any order or commission/submission at any point and in this case a refund will be issued immediately.

If I am unable to complete your commission, I will usually let you know from the get go, however in any case that I am unable to complete your commission it will be refunded for the month I was commissioned. If I am unable to complete your first commissioned item you have the chance to swap it with another item you want made, otherwise a refund will be issued.

As for Patreon there are a couple of things... the first is that you want to make a patreon account as a member (choose any username you like - you don't have to make it your real name if you don't want). Just follow the sign up process. Then the second, I believe when you try signing up to subscribe to a Patreon you'll select your currency and BRL is accepted but it will convert automatically. I'm using USD and the amount may come out to roughly 25 BRL for you.

I fell down the rabbit hole again and thought I’d share some resources for fellow sick-of-junk-mail people residing in the US.

(For unwanted calls, sign up for the National Do Not Call Registry, it’s free! Check the FAQs, it’s meant to stop unwanted sales calls only unfortunately, so it’s not a perfect 100% solution, but it helps. You can report companies and they can be fined “up to $43,792 per call.”)

How To Get Less Mail From Marketers

To decide what types of mail you do and don’t want from marketers, register at the Direct Marketing Association’s (DMA) consumer website DMAchoice.org, and choose what catalogs, magazine offers, and other mail you want to get. DMAchoice will stop most, but not all, promotional mail. You’ll have to pay a $2 processing fee, and your registration will last for 10 years

I'm running the most current version of EU4, with only extended timeline installed. Any attempt at loading a game with Extended Timeline installed ends the game as in I get a full report of my performance from EU4 as if I've ended the campaign.
