Does anyone else with a dual or show bred dog notice that their heat tolerance seems to be significantly worse than their working line and pet line cousins?

Cackling thinking about Ty, Dru, Kit, and Thais being such tough shadowhunters except what takes them down is experiencing real winter for the first time
Like they’re all born and raised in LA and Rio they’ve never experienced a day under 60F/16C in their lives (besides a a few winter visits to Idris in winter but that doesn’t really count)
Then Dru and Thais in Upstate NY and Ty in the Carpathian Mountains they’re gonna freak out about snow
They’ll probably start layering up and applying warming runes the first under 60/16 day of October
Kit prob has it easiest bc south England mainly gets cold rain, but he’s prob be a wimp about it bc months without sun takes and toll and he’ll be missing LA
They’ll all be like demons are light work after surviving a true Winter

Back in upstate NY, one of my favorite creatures ever is waking up from the winter. My friend sent me their pics, plus a link to this article.
SPRINGTAILS!
Sometimes they’re called “snow fleas,” but they’re not fleas, they’re more closely related to crustaceans.
I love each and every one!

Hellooo! I hope your holiday season has been going well!
Unfortunately I have caught covid and am being miserable and I’m desperately craving some sick Bucky and caring Steve. Could I possibly request a fic? Only if you have time and want to!! Otherwise I’ll keep rereading your existent fics 😅❤️
Hi friend!!! I'm so sorry you're sick but I'm so happy to get this (my first! 😃) ask! Something's been knocking around in my head involving a cold with little fits of sneezes that start out super light and quick but get heavier, so here's where that inspo got me with our sweet blorbo.
(I set this in a canon-divergent AU where the Winter Soldier came in before Age of Ultron and everyone’s fine and happy at the New Avengers Facility in upstate NY, just fyi, don’t really need context it’s just a bit of fluff)
The mission turned out a complete success, though it was hard-earned. Bucky felt his shoulders slowly start to relax as he dumped his wet dirty gear on the quinjet floor with a sigh of relief. He looked over to where Sam was patching up Steve, who’d taken a piece of shrapnel to the thigh, and determined that Sam was giving him enough shit for being reckless and cocky for the time being without his help. Steve caught his eye with a sheepish smile and he smirked in response, shaking his head gently and turning to his soothing post-mission routine of cleaning and organizing weapons and every last bit of gear.
He was dog tired, and cold, and achy, which was a little unusual, as was the scratchy sore inflamed feeling in his throat and the back of his nose. He brushed it off and began methodically wiping down knives.
He was halfway through disassembling his rifle when the slight itch in his face suddenly morphed into a tickle in his nose. The sneeze caught him by surprise enough that he barely had time to turn his face to the side. “Hhhtish!” It came out light and quick and unsatisfying, and he had to sneeze again immediately after. “Hhh-hh-Tsschu!” It felt like there was a third, but then the urgent tickle backed down. Didn’t go away, though, just fluttered teasingly between his nose and throat. He frowned and rubbed his whole face roughly. That was annoying. He refocused on the equipment spread out in front of him.
Steve watched Bucky diligently clean every last weapon and bit of gear, including some not his own. This was familiar all the way back to the war: it was how he came down from the tension of the mission, how he kept from overthinking about what could have happened or what might happen next time. He’d told Steve something his first sharpshooting instructor had imparted during training: “There’s almost nothing you can control in war, but you can keep your rifle clean, and a clean rifle’ll shoot better, so that right there’s something.”
He felt pride swell in him. Bucky wasn’t a regular fixture on their mission roster. He spent most of his time on training and equipment R&D at the upstate facility. Fighting didn’t have the magnet-pull for him that it did for Steve; he could handle anything, but sometimes combat rattled memories loose that he preferred to keep quietly packed away. And he contributed enough to the team’s successes just by imparting his vast skill set and helping stress-test armor and weapons.
Sometimes, however, something from that skill set was crucial to a mission. This time, it was the stealth and resourcefulness that had the Winter Soldier known as a ghost for decades. To infiltrate the facility undetected and open a backdoor for the Avengers, Bucky had trekked for two days through snow-covered woods and dove to the bottom of a lake full of floating ice chunks, to find a water inlet pipe barely big enough to squeeze through until he reached larger unused half-flooded access tunnels. Eventually he’d made it to a server room, a silent shadow taking out patrolling guards without raising alarm, and there he’d input the code to scramble the perimeter security. Once that was done the rest of them came in hard and fast, and Bucky threw himself into the fight alongside them.
It had gone perfectly, but Steve was tired, and he’d only been there for the grand finale. Bucky must be exhausted. And cold.
Equipment finally put away, he settled next to Steve with a sigh. He slung an arm around him and Bucky leaned into the casual embrace, clearing his throat and rubbing his face with a dry sniff. “You’re still in all this wet stuff?” Steve asked, feeling the stiff cold of the tac uniform. “Buck, you must be freezing.”
He just shrugged. “Be colder to change in here. ‘Sides, we’re almost back, no need to show off my skivvies,” he rolled his eyes at Clint, who having no such compunctions was now lounging in a purple sweatsuit.
“The hell I’d’ve caught from you for staying in wet things…” Steve shook his head.
“Yeah, yeah. I earned my right to hypocrisy putting up with you all those years,” Bucky replied loftily.
“Anyone mind if we turn the heat up a little?” Steve asked to the room at large, and a moment later a soft gust of warm air was coming from behind them. Bucky gave him a look like he was being ridiculous, but he relaxed a bit more and gave a little shiver at the warmth. Steve smiled, pleased with himself.
A moment later, Bucky gave a confused little look, his eyes fluttered and his breath caught, and he twisted quickly to the side to half-catch a quick, soft “hhhtssh” against his shoulder. Steve could feel his chest move with a few shallow hitching breaths before he sneezed a second, fuller “huh-Huhtsschoo!” tucked into his forearm.
“Bless you!” said Steve, rubbing his back. “See, you did get chilled.”
Bucky shot him a warning look but the threat in it was dampened by the way he looked like he still needed to sneeze. It puttered out into a few dry coughs, and he rubbed his nose hard, which just succeeded in turning it pink.
“Hmm.” Steve frowned. “Are you getting sick?”
Bucky just scowled. “Fussy. Ever since you got big, I swear…”
But he relaxed another fraction into Steve, let his tiredness show a little more, and Steve felt vindicated, if still a little worried. “Turnabout is fair play, pal.” Bucky had a lot of blankets and tea and soup in his near future. Ever since he first learned they were somehow both alive in this century, PUT BUCKY IN BLANKETS AND HUG AND KISS HIM had been a more or less constant siren going off in Steve’s head, and he indulged it whenever he got the chance.
Less than two hours later, they were back in their shared quarters. Bucky had unobtrusively stifled his sneezes throughout debrief, but he was too tired to try and resist the fact that he was coming down with a cold now that it was just him and Steve. His head ached, his chest felt scratchy with occasional nagging coughs, and his whole face felt stuffed up and tender. It felt like no amount of warmth and rest would satisfy this achy, shivery feeling, and the feeling that he might be about to sneeze was pretty much constant now. It only sometimes followed through, and he kept getting surprised by little fits.
“Hehtsshh, hhh-heh-hetsshoo! Huh...huhh—huhhtchumpf!” He groaned as he straightened. He’d barely gotten his boots off before those caught him.
“Go on, get in a hot shower,” Steve directed. “I’ll grab some of your cozy clothes to throw on after.”
“Sheep pants,” he grumbled, shuffling off to the bathroom. They were the warmest.
“Of course the sheep pants,” scoffed Steve, “what do I look like, a shmuck?”
In the shower, he tried to focus on how good the hot water felt, instead of on how runny and tickly the steam made his nose. He let a few light, teasing, spraying sneezes out freely as he stepped out, dried off, and rushed to blow his nose, which was sort of productive but mostly just underlined how congested he was getting.
He smiled at the socks, underwear, hoodie, and thick soft fleece pants with sleeping sheep printed on them, that Steve had left out for him. Just as began to pull the sweatshirt over his head, his nose twitched precariously.
“Oh, co—hehh—come on,” he muttered, stuck ridiculously with his sweater around his head but paralyzed by the intense tickle in his nose, which decided to tease him instead of getting the sneeze over with. He scrunched and wiggled his nose against the fuzzy fabric he was trapped in. “snff...hhh, ehh...ehh—heh...hehhh...ehh—hhyISHuhh!” He growled, finally popped his head through the collar, and trundled out of the bedroom towards the sound of Steve in the kitchen trying to one-up the mother-hen coddling that Bucky Barnes had perfected in the 1930s.
Steve made tea and perused their canned soups while listening to Bucky snuffle and sneeze throughout the process of showering and changing, feeling a mixture of fond exasperation, tender concern, and bashful arousal which threatened to turn him pink. He didn’t like Bucky being exhausted and uncomfortable, but the rare sight of him all vulnerable and tickly-sneezy had always...done things to him.
And he certainly looked and sounded that way now, in soft clothes with towel-dried hair and tired, red-rimmed eyes, coming up behind Steve’s left to hook his chin on his shoulder and slide his arm around his waist with a sigh, a sniff, a cough, and another sigh. He watched Steve pour hot water over the teabag and add a spoon of honey, and then Steve twisted to kiss his forehead and try to subtly evaluate it for fever-heat. Maybe? He was never much of a nurse compared to his Ma and Buck.
“Go park yourself on that couch,” he murmured to Bucky, who gave a little raspy chuckle ending in a groan.
“Once I do, I’mb ndot getting back up for the rest of the day,” his voice had a different deeper resonance and he was so much more congested. Steve was about to turn and fold him up in a giant tender hug when he tensed with a little gasp and “ehtshoo,” sneezed right into his shoulder, no time to turn away and cover like he generally did out of what Steve considered excessive politeness. “Shit, sorry,” he said in a breathy quaver, as Steve continued his turn. He shook his head in warning, “snff, I gotta—hhh—snee-huhh—I’mb gonna huh-huh...huhhaaTSHhiew! Snff-snff uhh...sndeeze...hehh...again! EhhTISHooo!”
Steve realized he was just standing there, poleaxed by the sight and sound of Bucky’s completely lost battle with his relentlessly tickling nose, the way his voice pitched as he tried to get words out ahead of his sneezes. He was definitely blushing hot pink by now. He shook himself and cast about before finding a tissue box and handing a couple to Bucky, who gave him a bleary grateful look with his nose still buried in his sleeve, hitching on the cusp of a fourth sneeze. It teased him even longer than the others, until he looked up blinking rapidly and finally shuddered into it: “Ihhh-hihhh-hIHktcshhOO!” He almost lost his balance with how it bent him at the waist and how tired he was.
“Bless you, honey,” Steve cooed as he finally got his arms around him, and as Bucky groaned and gave a pitiful nose blow. “That was a great demonstration of exactly why you should spend the whole day on the couch.”
With blankets. Steve got him propped up on pillows on their massive couch, dashed off and returned with an armload of different colors and fabrics, all soft and warm, and proceeded to burrito Bucky as he chuckled and coughed and batted at him. His eye-rolling and scoffing was undermined by the way he snuggled deeper into the bundle of warmth with obvious relief.
Suddenly he stiffened with a pained look and took a deep hitching breath, nose quivering, threatened by yet another sneeze. After a long frozen moment, he sighed as the tickle deserted him, and gave his aching sinuses a rub. “God. I really do have a cold,” he croaked, and then coughed a couple times.
“Yeah, sweets,” Steve said tenderly, stroking his hair, “but I’m gonna take good care of you.” Then he leapt up and dashed to the kitchen and back. “Here’s your tea. I’m about to heat up soup, and you need to eat a bowl before you nap. What sounds good—chicken noodle? Chicken and rice? That Thai coconut stuff?”
Bucky gave him a quizzical smile and chuckled softly. “Aren’t you the guy who tells people, ‘If you get killed, walk it off’?”
Steve didn’t know or care what his face was doing right now, but once in a while Sam told him he had something called “crazy eyes.” They were probably going to team up on making fun of him when Bucky got better. “You need more pillows. And I forgot tissues!”
“Steve, baby—”
“Stay there and drink tea!” He said in his Cap voice, rushing off to the sound of Bucky’s raspy laughter.

May I humbly request some NY hc’s?
**it’s fine if not dw**
idk if they'll be terribly interesting? but i'll try lol!
He has an affinity for all of the animals, plants, just nature related state symbols (e.g. beavers, eastern bluebird, nine-spotted ladybugs, sugar maples, etc. etc.), and probably loves learning about all of them.
He loves horses, and while he likes watching horse racing occasionally, he doesn't find the sport too terribly interesting. He probably talks about horse racing with someone like Kentucky though sometimes. He gets his mild interest in it from the horse racing in his own state (such as in places like the Saratoga Race Course as an example).
Is relatively decent at keeping plants alive, all things considered. The only person he really trusts to take care of them if he's not there is New Jersey. No one else gets to go near his plants. He likes to name them, too, sometimes.
Despite how much he makes fun of New Jersey's state nickname, he still trusts him the most when it comes to plants and gardening.
Not very original, but he has some pet pigeons.
He used to have a black cat named Void that would perch on his shoulder all the time.
Has snapped at multiple others to remind them New York state is not just the city. Sometimes though, he seems to forget this himself, much to his own dismay.
His answer on when 'upstate' starts seems to change semi-frequently, if someone asks for his personal opinions about it.
He gives Vermont Stewart's cards (gift cards you can only use in the store and those 'one free ____' ones) sometimes.
Adding on to that, he also sometimes will have a milkshake from them with him when he goes to the table. It got snatched once by Florida who then drank it and he still holds a grudge about it.
Occasionally swaps books with Washington, but will anxiously wait the entire time it is not in his possession.
There are times where he finds California extremely pathetic (can have different meanings, though. There are times where it's the 'soggy, sad kicked looking puppy' kind of pathetic or the 'you literally fucking suck, wtaf is wrong with you' kind of pathetic, among others).
Sometimes he'll make very spicy food and before he goes to eat it, walk up to others that don't like and/or can't tolerate spice and ask them to smell it, just to laugh at their reactions.
He likes playing sports. Ones he like are tennis, air hockey and volleyball, among (some very obvious) others.
He gets self conscious sometimes playing more active sports, or doing active things like running if he knows people are watching him.
He doesn't like swimming, be he does know how to.
He likes to go out into less populated parts of his state just so he can sit down and listen to nature.
He'll try to 'forage' in forests upstate sometimes, just so he find plants to take pictures and video of so he can show them to New Jersey to see if he likes them and ask what they are.
He used to skateboard because he knew it pissed other personifications off. He doesn't as much anymore, but he still has a decked out looking skateboard (it's black with things all over it. He decorated it himself and is very proud of it).
He knows multiple languages.
He finds the fact that it only snows for about a day or two in November and December in certain parts of his state now very depressing. He hates the fact sometimes it doesn't even snow until January. He doesn't like snow much, but he misses it when he doesn't see it as much as he used to.
His favorite drink is water. Cold, preferably.
He likes old/vintage stuff. He doesn't like calling them that though, because "It felt like this was the newest shit just last [speaks New York] week!".

Tag Game Tuesday?
Apparently this is a thing? Thank you for the tag @energievie
Name: call me Scurv
age: 28
pronouns: she/her
tell me about one of your hobbies: I enjoy video games, but I really just play the same 5 or so over and over. I also enjoy D&D, reading delightfully trashy romance novels, and being crappy at painting. I enjoy painting but not to get better at it, I just enjoy putting color on things.
what languages do you speak? English. I speak some Spanish and some German from school studies. I’m also trying to learn ASL.
one of your comfort movies: Making me pick one T___T The Princess Diaries.
do you have any kids? do you want any? No kids yet, but I do want them.
cold weather or hot weather? Cold, but after living in upstate NY I am on the anti-snow side of the fence. Shoveling and driving in it are a big ol’ NO for me.
you’re at an amusement park. what ride are you going on first? Yeaaaah, I’m terrified of heights. Last time I went on a rollercoaster, I had a full blown panic attack. I really enjoy water rides, though, and would gravitate towards any water ride.
what’s your go-to hairstyle/how do you wear your hair most days? I have curly/wavy hair that I wear naturally and down. My hair is thick and heavy so pony-tails give me a headache most of the time.
who was your top artist in your spotify wrapped/apple music replay in 2022? It was Kim Petras because I got really into her Slut Pop EP (so many damn catchy songs).
you’ve just been handed $1000 but you have to spend it on clothes. where are you shopping? I want a fancy fucking dress. I’d spend the grand on one dress that makes me feel like the hottest bitch ever.
wireless or corded headphones? Wireless
finally, tell me something that sparks joy: My cat. I love her so much, she’s my best friend.
I’m so new to this fandom (Shameless/Gallavich) I really don’t know anyone except @deedala (she who spammed my dash so much I got drawn in, lol, thank you so much). But if anyone else wants to do this, go for it!

Buffalo, New York, has houses around the 100k mark. They are not fantastic but they are livable. The weather is not bad, you get real winters but they move out on time then you get nice classic springs and falls. Mild summers in the 80s or so, rare 90 days. The state overall is blue, though this area's a bit more red. The state level laws keep things nice. I moved here for the nationally known autism support services (which are in new york city, but its available by train). You could zillow some places, and I'll tell you if the posts reflect reality. Tell you how good the area is. Though because it is a red area, the posts you'll have from some people call areas bad cause non white people live there.
Thank you for the input, I was actually being genuine in asking.
I lived in NY for a couple years actually, though close to the city, not upstate.
The thing keeping us from considering a lot of places is the weather, which Buffalo firmly falls into. Because both my husband and I are disabled in ways that make dealing with snow, shoveling snow, basically out of the question.
Honestly I'm not wild about actual winters, seasonal depression is a main reason I left NY and came back to Texas, but cold per se isn't a problem so much as grey, lifelessness for months on end and having to dig your car out to go anywhere.
Two of our closest couple friends have moved out of Texas, one to Illinois and one to Iowa and I'd love to be closer to them but...weather...
This is all theoretical because we don't have the financial situation to move right now. We own our home and land but it's not worth a lot. But, well, we've started talking about it in a long term way.
But it's honestly fucked how few places there are that are both affordable and not run by evil religious extremists. Like we basically keep running through red states like..."well, it's not AS BAD as Texas, right?" Or, "it's moving towards being a swing state, right?"
And I hate it so much because I honestly love my state (like, the actual LAND, yanno) and it's home and the GOP only wins by a handful of points and most people are disenfranchised so I know actually they are a minority. And we are way more racially diverse than almost anywhere else, that's something people who leave Texas always comment on. But unfortunately the fucking fascists are determined to take everyone down to hell with them.
And yeah this is just stressing me out a lot right now and taking a toll to the point I'm having trouble even looking at the internet.
IDK IDK please do tell me about the places with the not terrible winters where you can buy a small house or condo for a reasonable price where the GOP isn't coming for your rights.

“The snowstorm in Buffalo, NY is a normal winter where I’m from 🤪”
People really love to lie for whatever clout they think surviving a “tougher” winter gets you, but under no circumstance is it or should it be “normal” to get a rainstorm followed by freezing temperatures creating icy roads followed by a blizzard with white out conditions that lasts for several days dumping 50+ inches onto a city that incapacitates emergency services and leaves people stranded without power or hope of rescue. It does not matter how used to winter you are… you cannot effectively drive in a white out blizzard. You cannot drive on top of ice without risking your life. You cannot shovel several feet of snow without risking frostbite and a heart attack.
When are we just going to recognize that our storms are getting more dangerous? It snowed more when I was younger, but over longer periods of time. Not all at once, and we have the infrastructure for snow management in Upstate New York. It went from 50F to freezing temperatures within the same day across the state. We’ve had days where there was a 40-50 degree temperature change within the same day. Ice is becoming more of a common problem. Like, stop trying to one-up people over winter, especially in the Great Lakes region where we get hit with multiple kinds of snow storms all at once. We KNOW snow, okay. 🙄

A Chill In Her Soul || open to mutuals only
{This is for my MCU verse, so Ashelia would have been the victim of magic that preserved her some 5K+ years ago in Ivalice, to be later discovered and revived in the present day. Now she lives at the Avengers compound in upstate NY.}
Ashelia was beginning to feel like a caged bird sitting inside the strange modern facility all day long. It was a garish and highly technological place, too new, clean, and sterile both in aesthetic and emotion. The walls held no memories of events they’d seen, the furniture no remnants of the emotions one felt sitting on them. It felt like something the Archadian Empire would build, and it surely did not feel like any kind of home to her. Home... had been her father. It had been Basch. It had been Dalmasca.
Seeking the freedom and peace of nature, she wandered outside and onto the grounds. There were dark circles under her eyes as she looked around, an indication that sleep had yet again been a futile endeavor the night before. It had snowed the night before, something Ashelia had scarcely ever seen in her life except very briefly in her travels before she woke up in this strange land. She might have found it wondrously beautiful if it did not serve as further insult to her desire to see her homeland instead. As she walked around, looking at the white blanket that covered the ground and lingered on the trees, her heart began to ache.
Tumblr media
It was too cold here. Too white. Too blue and grey. There was no sun. No warmth. No sand. No golds, brown, yellows, and ochres. No ancient sandstone carved by hands centuries in the past. No scent of calcite, salt, quartz, and silica dust on the wind. No sand newts skittering about in every corner and crevasse as she walked. Nothing to remind her of her dear Dalmasca. Everything was different. Everything was wrong.
Her throat began to tighten and ache along with her heart, but she refused to cry. She was no child in need of reassurance every few moments. She could bear this pain as well as any other. The blood of the Dynast Kings coursed through her veins. She was, she had no doubt now, the last of her kind, the last descendent of King Raithwall... and House Dalmasca was the last noble House left of the three his sons had founded. The importance of history, legacy, and biodiversity of human life rested on her slight shoulders, bearing down with insistence. If she perished... so too would an entire branch of human evolution that would never be seen again.
This... this was simply her home now, whether she wished it to be or not. The Kingdom of Dalmasca would have to remain a bittersweet memory. That was a difficult and maybe even nearly impossible thing for her mind to grasp, but she must. She must find a way to cope with what had happened, she knew, or... or she might not survive. And she had to. It was a responsibility not only to herself but to all those who came before her, all the way back to Raithwall. For her father, too, and her eight brothers, all gone even before she woke up in this odd land. She had to keep going.
Ashelia hadn’t realized how long she’d been walking, lost inside her own mind such as she’d been. Or... how far she’d gone. Looking around, she saw only trees and snow. The compound was beyond her sight now. Thinking to retrace her footsteps to return, she realized the wind had blown the snow around and covered up her footprints. Sighing and seeing her breath in a puff of white vapor, she drew her coat more tightly around herself.
Tumblr media
It was so cold... and she was so sad. Did she want to be found? Or was she hoping this was all a dream and she’d wake up in Dalmasca, where it was hot and golden and the sands intruded so naturally into seemingly every living space? How she longed for that. Her throat was aching again, but no... she would not cry. Children cried. Princesses pushed though pain and grief and grew stronger for it...

Messages from your Angels & Guides~March 2024
Greetings!  We have entered the month of March. Winter is almost over and Spring is soon approaching. Daylight Savings Time returns. Staten Island told us we were getting an early Spring. But we had two snow days, One on Mardi Gras. The other was Saturday the 17th. Luckily for us in the city, it wasn’t too harsh. Even though upstate NY was hit pretty hard.  Last month saw me going to the ballet…
