Thoughts on snake discovery?
Mixed. They're not the worst out there, but there are things to be aware of!
Off the top of my head, the biggest issues I have with the channel are:
A history of too-small enclosures for snakes. This is better now but honestly still below a responsible standard, I believe
Irresponsible behavior with their pet alligator, including taking her out in public to a pet store in the past. Personally, I believe surrendering the animal to a reputable sanctuary would have been the most responsible course of action.
Breeding scaleless snakes (I actually got another ask about scaleless morphs recently, so check the blog for more info on why scaleless morphs aren't ethical!)
Their snake handling is usually excellent, but the issues with their channel mean I think it's smart to take their advice with a grain of salt.

Thank you for not excusing Snake Discovery. Having their pet alligator in a store was a huge nope for me like wasn't it a pet store too?? That means people bringing their dogs in and that could end so badly. Now finding out they used Amazon for merch that used stolen art from you and other artists and didn't respect those who told them it was stolen, is just the final straw. I loathe their fan base too, you can't say a word of justified and calm critique without then dog piling.
The fanbase was the main reason I kept my opinions only to Tumblr, even if I was directly affected by them.
I'm immensely glad people here were extremely resonable and supportive.

did you see snake discoverya bug pumpkin pie video? it feels very unsafe, and theyre encouraging others to go this for their reptiles so id like your thoughts....
https://youtu.be/Iw9r2dr-u3w
Link for everyone! Sorry for taking a bit to get to this, I had to find time to sit down and watch it.
This isn't, like, terrible, but it's also not good. They're obviously trying to make the pumpkin pie as safe as possible for the reptiles, and pumpkin is safe for the lizards they feed it to (bearded dragons, blue-tongue skinks, tegus). The cooked flour the recipe calls for is just not a great idea, though, and all those lizards can expect some stomach upset from that, and I'm not a fan of the whipped cream at all.
This may be a safe meal, but it's not a good or healthy one. Although all the reptiles they give this to can digest pumpkin, it's a natural laxative for them, and they ate quite a bit of it. Pumpkin should only be given to reptiles in very small amounts.
It's important to remember that, although we may want to give our pet reptiles fun treats like pumpkin pie, that's not something they need. Reptiles don't need or want a special treat for holidays. The best thing you can give your reptile, on every day of the year, is a healthy, species-appropriate meal.
I don't think this will make any of the reptiles involved sick, but it probably will give most of them an upset stomach. It's not necessary, and there are better and safer treats out there. Just a tiny bit of pumpkin or, even better, fruits like grapes or apples would have been much better treats.

TW: Cockroaches
When you're trying to feed a cockroach named after someone's ex to a lizard, but the lizard doesn't want to eat... A girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do!
I love Emily. Also Jason's fear gives me life.

Please please please tell us why you hate snake discovery
Admittedly it's mostly personal, but the distaste began with one contest they held for artists to design merch for them in exchange of a very mediocre payout (unfortunately I no longer remember the specifics).
What really cemented it for me was the full feature video they did for the holidays two years ago. A wide array of suggestions for gifting herp fans from mostly Amazon listings that stole designs from artists (mine included), links and all.
I saw a few comments warning them they were stolen. I contacted them directly to their email, never heard a word back. The video remained up for the entire season.
Wether or not they've changed their ways on how they choose to respect artists I ignore it, I simply prefer to distance myself from them for my own well being.
