Raised in Siberia, Nikolas Kamarov was secretly a descendant of the powerful alien Kheburim. Unlike other Kheran children born on Earth, Nikolas wasn't a hybrid, but a full-blood Kheran, abandoned after the relationship soured between his parents--Zannah and Yohn--partially over the massive caste differences that the native Kherans never fully overcame before Yohn's death and rebirth as a bio-android under his terran name, John Colt.

Eventually snapped up by S.T.O.R.M., Nikolas's "Winter" codename came as a part of an odd quirk of his energy absorption abilities: despite being able to handle raw power in excess of stellar bodies, he instinctively inverted any energy he absorbed (hot to cold, light to dark, etc). Coupled with his background and cold but professional demeanor, Nikolas thrived under STORM's Bendix regime as an agent and then leader of Stormwatch's Prime team up until the organization's dissolution.

Eventually, Stormwatch was reformed, supposedly under the aegis of the DEO, but secretly under control of President Amanda Waller--formerly of Team 7--who quickly installed Winter as her new Weatherman, partially due to his record of loyal service to Skywatch, and partially to prevent yet another Majestic-class superhuman from operating Earthside as she continued consolidating power...

One branch of Skywatch’s anti-Transformer weaponry development was stonewalled by a disagreement over its name, with one middle-manager insisting it be called “Nano Enhanced Rapid-action Firearms” or nothing. He got his way, and is now serving jail time following Skywatch's reformation into the Earth Defense Command, the research totally abandoned.
