[Review] Bomb Rush Cyberfunk (PS5)
Tumblr media
Jet Set Radio Future 2 is here, and it's all I ever wanted.
When Team Reptile made Lethal League and—more precisely—its sequel, they did an excellent job capturing the feel and aesthetic of Sega's Jet Set Radio games in a new genre. Now they've only gone and bloody done it - made an actual Jet Set Radio homage game, and it's an absolute stunner! Specifically, this is a pitch-perfect pastiche of Jet Set Radio Future, acting as a sequel to the 2002 classic in all but name, and since that particular instalment is a personal favourite of mine, I couldn't be happier.
Tumblr media
BRC seems to deeply understand what was great about JSRF and then faithfully and lovingly recreates it, with some new ideas and refinements to boot. In case you need catching up, it's a sort of urban street punk adventure: you get around, grind, and trick on inline skates, tag graffiti all over, contest with rival gangs, and avoid the overzealous police force. The world is colourful and detailed but a bit low-poly with a cel-shaded filter, and levels are set up as huge skatepark playgrounds. All the while a soundtrack of fresh beats including hip-hop, house, and electropop accompanies you.
Tumblr media
In BRC the structure of story-related tasks broken up by exploration returns, the levels full of collectibles to give you new colour schemes, music tracks, graffiti designs, etc. as well as just setpieces to "platform" around. A fast-travel system helps you get between areas, some of which replay the hits of JSRF while others explore new territory like a mall complex or industrial oil rig; the setting of New Amsterdam nods to the developer's Dutch origin but in practice it feels like it would easily fit in Tokyo-to (disclaimer, I have never visited The Netherlands). In addition to skates you have skateboards and BMX, each one having slightly different manoeuvrability plus the chance to open certain doors in the game world: for example, a skateboard can trick on fire hydrants to get elevated to a handful of secret areas. This gives more of a reason to have different ones on hand but can feel like an arbitrary passkey check.
Tumblr media
Movement is aided by the new boost pack mechanic, which gives you an enormously useful air-dash. A boost meter gives you some speed but can also freshen up trick combos and extend your manual, while it's refilled by tricking (like in Sonic Rush), so doing these cool lines and combos feeds back into movement in a satisfying way. Cans have been done away with entirely so you can tag at any time without worry, and graffiti minigames have actually been brought back from the original JSR, except here they're super quick and snappy, and your inputs determine which of your unlocked tags goes up which keeps the visuals fresh.
Tumblr media
A handy new feature is the flip-phone menu (reminiscent of The Arcane Kids' vaguely JSR-esque Zineth). It's great for flavour but also lets you get tips from teammates or contact new recruits, check out your range of graffiti designs and how to write them, consult a persistent minimap while highlighting tag spots, or change the currently playing music. And speaking of the soundtrack, it's sublime, a heady mix and perfect tonal accompaniment that even includes three tracks from the funky uncle himself Hideki Naganuma (much like Hover before it)... and if you ask me they're some of his best.
Tumblr media
Another way BRC expands slightly on JSRF's template is a bit more emphasis on plot, with a central mystery revolving around recently-decapitated protagonist Red, his new cyberhead, and his connections to the previous top dogs in the city's counterculture. This framing fumbles at times, but it gives more purpose to your interactions with other rudies and conflicts with the cops, and interstitial sequences between chapters lets the game reinterpret JSRF's surreal climax in a dream context.
Tumblr media
I've been eagerly awaiting this game and as a big fan of JSRF it didn't disappoint. BRC takes everything I loved about that (now slightly creaky and inaccessible) game and gives it a fresh coat of paint. I've seen people gripe about the price and playtime but both are about on par with the game that it styles itself as a love letter to, so it would be disingenuous of me to complain about either. Better by far to celebrate what an awesome achievement this game is in recapturing a unique classic while brilliantly modernising it. Bomb Rush Cyberfunk reminds me why I love video games.

If you're a Digimon fan...
You owe it to yourself to go to Youtube and watch Digi-Destiny.
It's a homebrew Digimon RPG done by the Schmuck Squad on the Abridged Alliance channel. As of writing this, there are 19 sessions, a One shot, and a small number of "Deep Dives" to discuss the lore of the game.
It's very well done, funny, heartfelt and takes full advantage of having the humans and Digimon played by different people, allowing for the players to discuss plans and come up with wacky ideas.
Our "Heroes"
Eric "E.R." Ryder: Good natured, if accident prone, skateboarder. Once got hit by a bus. Partnered with a slightly dim Monodramon
Grayson "The Wizard" Mcknight: The resident smart guy, a bit shy and has a problem saying no. Partnered with a slightly kleptomaniac Terriermon
Ryan "Riot" Scarlet: Team Gadgeteer and mechanic. Very creative, but very reckless. Partnered with Flamemon, who would really like it if Riot didn't throw himself into fights head first.
Gary Pasternack: Overworked, over tired office worker. Seems very close to a nervous breakdown at any time. Has a van that has been on it's last legs for years. Partnered with Magimon, (a fan creation designed to be a rookie form for both Wizardmon and Witchmon), a particularly creative indiviual with the ability to pull almost anything they need from their hat.
Reiner Takeshi: A Chef who wants to run his own business. very worried about his little sister. Takes no shit from his partner Digimon, Impmon
A few (non spoilery) highlights:
The initial reaction to the Digimon: (Riot, "Well, that's (Flamemon) a fire demon, so this is probably hell)
Magimon's introduction: (Hey buddy what you looking for in here also this place smells funny)
Impmon... Just Impmon,
Gary and his Van.
Grayson "allegedly" hacked the government. Well, the mayor.
Monodramon and the headbutt contest.
E.R. Vs the Numamon
E.R. attempting to make rollerblades out of a broken skateboard. Emphasis on "attempting" (I can't do it. I can't use my Heelys to escape my feelies)
Terriermon the Criminal. Starting with pickpocketing Riot for money
The entire sequence of "RiotGreymon" (Riot dressed in a Greymon helmet)
Reiner contributing to early fights by throwing rocks.
Go watch it. It's a lot of fun

Cyberchase Comics: The Great Cyber-skate by Ron Barrett
Here is the first of a group of three one-shot Cyberchase comics produced by Ron Barrett for the pbskids.org website sometime in 2011. They were placed under the "activites" section, but they have since been removed. I will transcribe the dialog.
Tumblr media
The Hacker: This museum is all about me! I love it!
Caption #1: Buzz ironing my lovely cape
Caption #2: Generous me giving toys to Delete
The Hacker: Only one thing is missing...
The Hacker: A pedestal for my statue!
Buzz: Hey boss, look! There's a skateboard contest on Radopolis!
Cyber News: Trophy to be awarded to winner
The Hacker: That's it! The perfect pedestal! I'm going to win that trophy
Buzz: Too late! Entries are closed. Besides, you don't own a skateboard and you don't know how to skate.
The Hacker: FEH! I never let ignorance stop me!
The Hacker: I'll put together the ironing board and bunnies...
The Hacker: Presto! - A skateboard!
The Hacker: OOOOPS!
Narration: On Radopolis...
Jackie: Ouch! I hit my thumb!
Slider: Let me take a look at that.
Nezzie: Oh Slider, you did a terrific job designing this skateboard challenge.
Matt: Hey, guys! Can we finish building it?
Matt: Why do I suddenly feel invisible?
Tumblr media
Slider: Well, I'm off to enter the contest!
Jackie: It is a challenge - It's got a banister, crazy cones, broken sidewalk...
Inez: Sewer half-pipe, a loop...
Matt: and a judge.
King Dudicus: Judge Dude.
The Hacker: Pardon me, young Radopolite, what time does the contest begin?
Young Radopolite: 2:30, its 2 O'clock now.
The Hacker: 2 O'Clock? May i see your watch?
Young Radopolite: Sure, mister.
The Hacker: Ah-ha! You're wearing it upside-down! It's only 8:30!
Young Radopolite: Silly me. I must be tired. I should rest before the contest.
The Hacker: Good idea! I'll hold your number for you.
Young Radopolite: Thanks.
The Hacker: He just dropped out. I am taking his place.
King Dudicus: You, dude?
The Hacker: Want to give me the trophy now or wait 'til after the contest?
King Dudicus: The dude who's best at finishing the course wins it.
The Hacker: Listen up, you bolts buckets - after I complete my great skate, I want you to cut a hole on the course...
The Hacker: So Slider will become a stumbler!
King Dudicus: Let the cyberskateboard contest begin! The first skater is... The Hacker!
King Dudicus: Go dude!
Jackie, Inez, and Matt: Hacker?
The Hacker: Whooooayy!!
Tumblr media
The Hacker: Ai-yi-yi-yi!
Buzz: There he goes. Start cutting.
Digit: Oh no! The contest has already started. Huh? Hacker? Buzz? Delete?
The Hacker: HELLLLP!
Buzz: Heh-heh
Digit: I'd better squawk on the Sqwak! Earthlies! Buzz and Delete are cutting a piece out of the course!
Buzz: A hole to be filled by Slider.
Delete: Finished.
Jackie, Inez, and Matt: Thanks Didge! We're on it!
Inez: There's a whole piece missing. How do we make one that fits perfectly?
Jackie: It's a rectangle.
Matt: We can measure the hole...
Matt: and cut a new plank to fit out of this broken skateboard.
Jackie: measure with what?
Matt: I can measure with my shoelace.
Matt: It's one lace long...
Matt: by one third of a lace wide.
Jackie: Draw the lace lengths on the board. Hurry! Slider's starting.
Inez: Gee, it looks more like a tangle than a rectangle.
Matt: It should have square corners.
Inez: Wait! Here in our toolbag - A carpenter's square!
Inez: You can use it to square off the corners.
Matt: Great! I'll measure one lace length...
Matt: across the top and redraw the line.
Matt: Then measure and draw one third of a lace down the side...
Matt: turn the square...
Matt: so the corner is at the side. Draw one lace length across here...
Tumblr media
Matt: Then turn the square and draw a line upward!
Jackie, Inez, and Matt: The rectangle is untangled!
Jackie: Cuttin' it out!
Matt: Perfect fit!
Digit: Nail! Nail! The gang's all here!
Inez: Thanks, Didge!
Narration: Just in time!
Digit: Go Slider!
Narration: Up ahead, Hacker enters - the loop!
Narration: And as he does...
Narration: The legs on his ironing board spring open!
Ironing Board: Sproing!
Narration: As Slider rolls past him to the finish!
Narration: And is awarded the trophy!
The Hacker: My pedestal! Sob! Sob!
Buzz: Don't be sad, boss. We'll fix up a nice pedestal for your statue.
The Hacker: I am gorgeous.
Delete: You're the iron man, boss.
Buzz: Yeah, we're never board with you!
That is the end of the comic.
So, what did I think about it?
Slider is great, but why is he entering a skating contest on a course that he built himself? That gives him an unfair advantage. Why did they keep the contest running while the kids tried to fix the sabotaged ramp?
We now know that citizens of Cybersite Radopolis are called Radopolites. Buzz's line about making a hole to be filled my Slider creeps me out.

Accidentally confessing to each other while laughing over something for Willie/anyone? Please and thank you
Willie groaned as he looked over his schedule for the fall. He'd needed a skills course to graduate, and Dr. Butler the guidance counsellor had told him in no uncertain terms that no, he could not do Woodworking again. Which sucked, because it was an easy A involving him revamping the birdhouse he had made his first year for the third time and not losing a digit to the power saw.
So now Willie was stuck in Home Ec.
He was not looking forward to learning how to cook and sew and a course that still had a syllabus set in the 1950's where the women were expected to make a home while the men worked in ugly suits and ties. Even moreso when he learned the teacher was Miss Abernathy, who looked like she had just finished sucking a lemon every second and hated Willie for skateboarding on school grounds. And for winning the school mural design contest when she wanted her star pupils to win.
Willie just hoped she graded him fairly because he doubted he'd win in the fight over that, he wasn't exactly popular with any of the faculty given the aforementioned skateboarding and tendency to flaut the dress code.
Thankfully when he walked into the class, he spied an empty spot at the bench with Alex and Reggie. "Hey brochachos, you two doing this class?"
Alex rolled his eyes and nodded. "The computer classes were full."
Reggie beamed. "I like baking! My MeeMaw taught me how to do all this stuff, and Alex didn't trust me to take Wood Shop on my own, so here I am."
"Well I know nothing, so you may end up helping me limp my way through," Willie said, pulling his hair into a bun. Grinning to himself when Alex flushed at the move and Reggie failed to meet his eyes.
Look, Willie knew he was hot okay? And he knew that Alex and Reggie thought so too, despite their very established relationship. It wasn't like either of them were hard on the eyes either, so if they ever wanted him to join them, well Willie was game, but he doubted that was a real possibility.
Either way, it was time to focus, as Miss Abernathy walked in, her perpetual scowl present and accounted for and she told them to take out their notebooks for a crash course in health and safety regulations for this class. Willie groaned and wondered if it wasn't too late to switch to art classes.
A few weeks later, Willie was really wishing he had switched to art. He hated sewing, his fingers were constantly getting pricked with the needles, and thus all his fabric was full of small bloodstains. He was terrified of the sewing machine, even more so when Alex used it with ease and managed to make a set of placemats. Reggie had turned in a stuffed dog with a wonky head that he gifted to Willie once he got a decent grade. Willie had managed a passable pair of funky socks, but they had fallen apart in the wash when Willie wore them.
Thankfully now they were moving onto baking. At least this meant they got to eat in class, even if Willie still wasn't sure he should be trusted with spice levels given his very white benchmates. Maybe he'd keep his experiments with poblanos for when he cooked at Julie's house during band meetings.
Band meetings that he went to, because he helped Reggie design merch, helped load and unload the van with Alex. He was fine being an unpaid roadie since it meant he saw every Phantoms show for free and the Molinas fed them all every time they were over, which was pretty often.
"We're making muffins," Alex said as Willie found his seat. "Reg wants blueberry, I think carrot would be better, so you get to break the tie."
"Why not both?' Willie asked. "They might be an interesting combo. But I call not it on grating the carrots."
"That's not...okay," Alex sighed. "You're on dry ingredients, Reggie is on wet."
"You want me to use the lactose free milk sweetness?" Reggie asked.
"Nah, I'm okay having dairy if it's baked," Alex replied. "Willie you vegan this month?"
"I missed honey too much, so no," Willie replied.
"Honey?" Reggie questioned. "Not milk? Butter? Cheese?"
Alex snorted with laughter at that, and Reggie giggled, with Willie joining in. They had many a debate over his love of cheese conflicting with his occasional veganism. And how the vegan cheese downright sucked.
Willie shrugged, still giggling a little. "I like honey."
"I like you too," Reggie said, then slapped a hand over his mouth.
Willie sat up a little straighter at that. "It's okay Reggie. I like you as well, but I gotta say, not the nickname I woulda given you."
"Please, I get stuck with hot dog and he gets something better than honey?" Alex groused playfully.
"He's cowboy obviously," Willie replied. "And I like you too hot dog, don't worry."
"Well d'uh," Alex said, blushing pink. "It hasn't been super obvious what with you flirting and wearing all your crop tops to this class even after the teacher made you sit through three different videos about appropriate clothing to cook in."
Willie shrugged. "It made you both look."
"We were looking anyway," Reggie admitted. "So how about we do these muffins, and maybe enjoy them on a picnic date this afternoon?"
"Sounds good to me," Willie said, and began measuring ingredients. And maybe whisking a little vigorously, covering them in flour, just to make them laugh. Even if they got in trouble and had to stay late to clean up the mess.
Willie didn't mind, and that afternoon, he could care less about the flour still streaking his hair because he had Alex feeding him muffins (he was right about the blueberry carrot combo) while Reggie strummed his six string, serenading them both.
And Willie had never been happier he had to do Home Ec-no matter what grade he got, his new boyfriends were more than worth it.

what’s in the gaang’s youtube history 📺
aang likes videos of people doing impressive skateboard tricks, video game speedruns, heartwarming videos titled smth like "WATCH THIS TO HAVE YOUR FAITH IN HUMANITY RESTORED", unlikely animal friends, cats being silly, puppies running around, comedy sketches with high production value, and whatever else 12 year old boys watch on youtube (lego??? minecraft??? pokemon??? i .... don't actually know)
katara is addicted to youtube almost as much as she is addicted to twitter. she watches so many longass videos on social/political issues and then tweets the creators about how one hour and forty three minutes into the video they stated an opinion that she personally disagreed with, and she demands an apology. she also loves elaborate makeup tutorials that she would never even bother to attempt to replicate (but she likes to think that maybe one day if she gets invited to the met gala, she now has some looks to choose from)
sokka's youtube library is extremely eclectic. he can't stop clicking on videos titled shit like "intro to particle physics" just to watch the entire thing and be like "why did i watch this i knew all that already." but yknow. he just had to make sure. he's a big fan of chris fleming, and he's made all his friends watch "gigi the christmas snake" multiple times. he's gone down a lot of rabbitholes in his day, but his personal favorite side of youtube is the videos of chemical reactions, especially the ones that end in an explosion.
toph occasionally enjoys listening to longass video essays about obscure topics, but mostly she just listens to podcasts. she’s also partial to this one video that’s just the sound of a chainsaw revving on a 10 hour loop, and she plays it at just the right volume that her parents will be like “what’s that awful noise?” to which she innocently responds “i don’t hear anything” and they’re like “oh no you must be able to hear it, it’s so annoying” and toph’s like “are you sure? it sounds normal to me.” she tries this on katara once, but katara gets so frustrated that she just yells “oh wow didn’t realize you were blind AND deaf” and that leads them to get in a very violent brawl in which toph’s nose is nearly broken, so she decides to limit this particular gambit to the company of her parents only.
zuko exclusively uses youtube to watch cute animal videos. otherwise, he's terrified he'll accidentally click on something that might potentially radicalize him, since he read somewhere that the algorithm was designed to do that, or worse, direct him to one of those content farm generated animations of elsa getting a c section, which is apparently also a concern. frankly, the internet scares him, and he tries to avoid it as much as possible.
suki watches npr tiny desks, kexp live, lofi hip hop anime beats to relax/study to, and best of vine compilations. anything on youtube that isn't music or shortform comedy simply does not interest her.
to boost her platform, ty lee decides to go on a reality show. she pretends to be a vapid airhead, but is actually very subtly manipulating not only the other contestants, but also the crew. she walks away from the whole experience with double the number of instagram followers (she already had a sizable amount) and a huge bag. anyway, azula goes through a phase of obsessively watching a lot of clips from. that
mai is indebted to the guy who reuploaded all the “patti reviews exotic animals” videos after they got taken down from the original channel. her favorite youtube video of all time though is nathan fielder thin watermelon. she rewatches it at least once a week
ty lee’s youtube history is just meditation playlists and also the goriest true crime stories she can find #justgirlythings <3
yue loves the artful simplicity of those animated tedx videos. they’ve led her down a lot of really interesting research rabbitholes. she promised katara she’d stop sending them to sokka though after he spent the next month telling her about nothing but eel mating habits and lesser known facts about genghis khan
iroh only uses youtube to watch recordings of tea ceremonies and isn’t even aware that there are other types of videos on the platform. ignorance is truly bliss
jet exclusively watches videos with the word “callout” in the title. the longer and more contrived, the better

I've never shared any headcanons of mine publicly. It is mostly about Will painting because I like to paint. Hope you will enjoy it
🌌 In high school Will helps the theater club with decoration and costume design. He never takes serious parts in plays but dances with the group at the back. When the rehearsals are in full force he dances everywhere.
👨‍❤️‍💋‍👨 A heart to heart between Will and Lucas resulted in a contest about who would be the most obnoxious PDA user with their significant other (within the Party of course, it's still 80s). The one person who lost in said contest was Dustin Henderson. (El had a time of her life)
🥑 Of course Will can cook! But it is more of what we have in the fridge variety. And Mike who never bothered to learn apart from making toasts and heating food in the microwave, makes himself a goal to spoil Will rotten with something fancy. Murrey has a couple of interesting recipes. Joyce and Jonathan highly benefit from it. Nancy is cautious but the fact that nobody's ended up throwing up gets to her last defense. El likes to participate and Jim is helping (by giving orders). Karen hints that it could be more than a special occasion and not only at Byers' house but Mike is not buying it.
👁️ Will is teaching Max to paint. They are outside on a planair, she is painting a landscape. Will is fooling around with her skateboard. Mike forgot about three cool cans of Coke in his hands. Wet from the heat the cans are slipping between his fingers and fizzling around his legs on the pavement.
🖤 Will is spending too much time to find that soft black color to paint Mike's hair with. He is never satisfied with the result. He is never going to be able to emulate that moonless midnight he wraps around his fingers sometimes. He is trying though.
👨‍🎨 When Will draws him Mike is never bored sitting still for hours because he can watch Will as long as he wants and there wasn't a time yet when he wouldn't. He is creating stories in his head while he's at it. They have a tape recorder running in case it will be something important.
💬 Will can listen for hours to Mike telling stories. But sometimes he is caught up in the sound of his voice and doesn't actually understand a word. It's OK, he can hear it again.
🏀 Sometimes Will is trying really hard to sketch his friends playing basketball (Lucas, Max and Mike) and ping-pong (El and Dustin) but always ends up joining them. Max is winning with the basketball and El is a real match for Dustin.
🤢 That one time Will aquired some bodyart paint. He painted Holly a tiger. He painted El a monkey. He painted Lucas a mean zombie look. He painted Max a vampire. He painted Dustin a lion.
He painted Mike a vomit green all over his laughing face.
🌈 Will is sassy, a flirt and relentless tease, but he softens when Mike gets shy. Everything is far from perfect but they have a lot of time ahead to get there (together).

Random stuff:
Jin has a tattoo on the back of their shoulders ( I don't know what the exact term is called). It's a pair of wings. I feel they got this in their late teen- early 20's as a final act in their angst phase until they realize " hey maybe I should chill". They don't regret it, it's a really good tattoo.
Speaking of tattoos, I'm changing Wayne's a bit. I feel it would fit his character to have something much smaller than his entire arm. I still think it would be one of a Serperior, but maybe around his forearm? I still need to think about it but yeah.
Jin accidentally called Kohaku and Wally their wife and husband respectively once. They didn't propose yet, but was planning to. They're too embarrassed to try now, especially since Kohaku will never let it go.
Most people are shocked too see Kiran being much more fit that they were before being yanked into the past. Unfortunately for Kiran, this means getting dragged into Danica's and Barry's work out routine against his will. He can't complain to much though. It's probably the least akward time they have together and it's where Danica and Barry act like their old selves. Still. Kiran just wanna study.
Kenji skateboards :D
I'm thinking about having Flint and Buck be distant relatives to Alder and Benga.
Marlon is from Alola and is black in this au because fuck his canon design.
Same goes for Flint and Benga too.
Elesa hair is naturally black in this au.
Drayden might be the train twins uncle or grandpa. Still deciding.
Speaking of Drayden, based on his house in the games, unless that's his wife and kids, I like to imagine Drayden just being like " oh hey do need a place to stay? Sure you can live with me. You're my kid now", and there's nothing much people can do about it lol.
Back to ocs, Aiko is a very skilled dancer due to her training under the Kimono Girls, and also knows how to be an excellent hostess. She just chooses not to use those skills lmao.
Danica occasionally does contests, but not the big popular ones that her mother used to do. More of the lower scale, local contests that happen. Angel is who she uses the most when it comes to these.
She probably has ran into Drew ( oc ) a couple of times but probably never actually introduced herself.
Klink where Ingo and Emmets first pokemon, then followed by what they're most known for, such as Chandelure and Galvantula.
Emmet will most definitely drag Alexis to Chargestone Cave to attract Joltik. It's better than constantly breeding them but poor Alexis is now constantly swarmed by little fuzzy spiders.
Eva is occasionally called by Elesa to do some modelling. She's very good at it, and it allows her to try on different styles she usually doesn't wear. Elliot always gets the photographs first, which never fails to make her heart explode( pos).
Trash talk is something so weird to Naomi. She understands why people do it, her friends do it before battle too. But sometimes it gets mean, and she doesn't want to be mean. So she lightly encourages instead, only really trash talking with her friends, slightly, but treats it as light teasing between friends than something to get the crowd hyped up.
Carol loves trash talk by the way, they get to insult people and play it off as a joke professionally. It will come for their ass later, but they love it regardless.

Article from The Conversation on our Chicano Park research.
Urban wellbeing is increasingly tied to what urban planners term “green” and “blue” spaces: the parks and waterfronts that our towns and cities may include. Residents are also encouraged to leave the city altogether, to seek out the healthy calm of forest bathing, fell running or cold water swimming.
The potential of play within the urban environment, however, is often overlooked.
Skateboarders have long been invested in what I call “grey” space: the overlooked corners, edges and surfaces of the built environment. Skateboard magazines and videos routinely explore the social and architectural histories of sets of stairs and stone benches.
These spots, largely invisible to the general public, are richly symbolic. In seeing them as ramps and launchpads, skaters transform unremarkable bits of the city into ritual places of magic and wonder.
Recent research conducted with my colleague, Andrea Buchetti, shows that skateparks are sites of unstructured play and community, as well as remembrance and ritual. Otherwise banal and polluted locations are afforded layers of meaning and depth.
Skatepark memorialisation
The Chicano Park skatepark in San Diego is nestled below the imposing, blocky concrete columns of the on-ramps for the city’s Coronado bridge.
Built in 2015, the skatepark features four vibrant murals (by artists including Ricardo Islas) that draw on both the indigenous heritage of this ancient northern Mexican region and skateboard iconography. In memory of lost friends, local skateboarders build shrines at the foot of the paintings using broken skateboards, rocks, cacti and cut flowers.
The five-lane highway bridge above it stands 61 metres tall, allowing safe passage for ships bound to the nearby naval base. Completed in 1969, it links downtown San Diego with the smaller city of Coronado across San Diego Bay.
The space beneath the bridge has long been contested. When built, its route divided a longstanding Mexican American neighbourhood, Barrio Logan, that had already been disrupted by the construction of the Interstate 5 in 1963. Over 5,000 homes and businesses were destroyed in the process.
The state had promised the community a park by way of compensation. But on April 22 1970, Mario Solis, a local student, noticed bulldozers where the park should be, and found out the city was, in fact, constructing a highway patrol base there.
At Solis’s urging, more than 250 residents gathered with shovels and pickaxes to reclaim the land. They planted cacti and trees to create a communal park. After three months of protest, the city conceded to work with the community, and Chicano Park was officially established.
Local artist Salvador Torres was one of the people who lost their homes. In 1973, he galvanised the community into painting murals on the imposing chunks of concrete built in their stead. It was a form of creative resistance. The motifs referenced the cultural heritage of this ancient northern Mexican region, from Aztec symbolism to indigenous plants and beasts, and also Mexico’s colonial experience and revolutionary struggles.
The park is now a protected historic space and landmark. People gather there for annual celebrations on April 22.
Skateboarding as culture and community
Research has long shown the connection between sport and religion. Fans make pilgrimages to stadiums and worship athletes like gods.
Just as a football fan might worship at Wembley stadium in London, a specific neighbourhood curb might hold great significance because of a connection to a famous skater or a historic event. I have shown how skateboarding functions as a lifestyle religion. In the way they observe, perform and organise their communal activity, skateboarders derive spiritual expression and identity from both the physical act of skateboarding and the places in which it is conducted.
Some skateparks have dedicated plaques and permanent memorials designed into skateable features. When legendary San Francisco skateboarder and chief-editor of Thrasher magazine, Jake Phelps, died in 2019, a sculptor in Los Angeles made a concrete tombstone feature to install in the Lower Bob’s DIY skatepark in Oakland. He mixed some used dental floss Phelps had left behind into the concrete. “We don’t got his cremated body,” the artist told Thrasher, “but we got pretty much all the DNA we’re gonna need.”
London’s Skateboard Graveyard on one of the supports of Hungerford Bridge, on the South Bank, is another salient example. For years now, old boards have been thrown down from the Golden Jubilee footbridge in memory of Timothy Baxter, one of two skaters who were attacked and thrown into the river Thames in 1999.
Baxter died as a result and the juvenile attackers were convicted of manslaughter. Many of the skateboarders who take part in the ritual might not know that this is how it began, yet they persist in offering their broken boards to the site.
RIP epitaphs
In 2023, the skatepark in Sacramento’s Regency Park was renamed in honour of Tyre Nichols, a skateboarder who was beaten to death by police officers in Memphis, Tennessee.
Australian graphic design expert Dan Johnston has identified RIP epitaphs as one of the most common types of skateboarding-related graffiti. He cites messages he has noted on the steel ramps and concrete bumps of skater desinations in Singapore, Paris and south Australia – RIPs and Miss Us scrawled in white correction fluid, marker pen or spray paint.
Despite skateboarding’s recent ascent to Olympic status, for many skateboarders it is more a culture – or even a cult – than a sport. It brings diverse people together for unsanctioned play, recasting obstacles – an impassable buckled road in Wiltshire, say – as toys and tools.
In their provocative curves and surfaces, skateparks embody this creativity. They mimic the city beyond, showing how the built environment cannot just be conceived of as a framework for economic activity. Grey space – and grey times – can be transformed if communities, and the DIY cultures they give birth to, are allowed to flourish in the city.

The core of Deathbulge: Battle of the Bands centers on a deadly contest where bands don't just play music – they use it as a weapon. Think of the best concert you've ever seen but ten times more intense. Now, imagine being in control of that. You assemble your band from a roster of 9 musically-inspired roles. Each dazzling in design and packed with unique abilities. From a rockstar guitarist to a trance inducing DJ, your choices shape the very rhythm of your battles. If you ever wanted to kick open a door like they do in movies. Well, in Deathbulge: Battle of the Bands, you can. Kicking doors isn’t just about style; it’s also a skill you can enhance. Start with the flimsy ones and work your way up. Before you know it, no door will stand in your way. Battles in the Deathbulge: Battle of the Bands universe are not just about whose turn is next. The real magic happens in-between the turns. It's the pulse pounding moments in the bar effects that will keep you on your toes. Mixing a strategy board with real-time decision-making, creating a dynamic that’s both thrilling and cerebral on Linux.

What's a rockstar without a killer jacket? This isn't just any jacket; it's a BATTLE JACKET. Decorate it with patches from your favorite bands. Since each grants you extra edge during battles. Monsters aren’t hidden in the Deathbulge: Battle of the Bands world; they're out there in the open. So you can pick your battles. Some are bizarre, some hilarious, and some, like the skateboarding platypus, are also a mix of both. Music is the soul of the Deathbulge: Battle of the Bands game. So the soundtrack won't disappoint. It’s the kind of music that makes you nod your head in approval and perhaps even pick up a guitar yourself. One of the standout elements of Deathbulge: Battle of the Bands is the personality infused into even the smallest details. Forget bland items like "health potion." When you're feeling down, a warm cup of "Barry Friendly's Tea" works its magic. Oh, and you might bump into Barry, the friendly beverage provider, during your journey. In essence, Deathbulge: Battle of the Bands is a vivid tapestry of humor, music, and adventure. It's not about playing, it's about living the absurdity, the rhythm, and the fun. How to Select the Best Children's Skateboard For Your child?
Many parents are unsure of what to look for when purchasing their child's first skateboard. Let's have a look at our possibilities and see if we can assist you in making the best decision for your skateboards for kids.
Tumblr media
Sizes of Skateboards for Children
The majority of high-quality Skateboards Decks are available in teen and adult sizes. A somewhat smaller board, on the other hand, will allow a younger skater to properly handle and navigate their board. Because of the narrower width, smaller feet might benefit from the deck's contoured design. For everything from kick turns to ollies to more complex tricks, a shorter length enables optimal foot positioning and the possibility for the front foot to correctly contact with the kick of the board.
Kids' Skateboard Quality
While there are plenty of lousy skateboards on the market, we'd want to see novice skaters have a safer and more progressive learning experience skateboarding on a skate shop grade board in the appropriate size.
A contemporary contoured maple or bamboo deck that provides the appropriate balance of strength and flexibility for tricks.
For novices, performance bearings and high-quality wheels with softer wheel alternatives are recommended. Trucks that are lighter and have softer bushings for easier turning.
Beginner Skateboards - This is by far our most popular skateboard series. All Skateboard branded components are used in the starter, allowing us to make an excellent board at an affordable price
Advanced Skateboards - Designed for skaters who will spend more time at the skatepark than on the streets and who want to skate the same name brand components as adolescents and adults use, such as Thunder Trucks and Bones Wheels. (If you're seeking an extra boost in mobility, check out our Bones Bushings Upgrade.
Pro Skateboards - The pro skateboard has Spitfire Wheels, Bones Bushings, Bones Bearings, and Thunder Trucks and is contest ready. This board is suitable for skaters of all levels, although it performs best at a skatepark.
Summary
If you've chosen to encourage your kids to try skating, consider getting them a high-quality, properly sized skateboard with a design and style that will appeal to them. This increases their chances of success.
