The Portuguese Man O’ War floats with the help of a gas filled bladder, topped by a vertical membrane serving as a sail. Long threads trail behind it, some as many as 30 meters long, and each armed with many thousands of stinging cells. BBC Earth

Siphonophore GeminiTay HeadFanon
This was my personal fanon for nl!Gem’s first life.
As an siphonophore Gem’s individual parts referred to themselves as "Us"/"We". They addressed the Gem "Body" as "It" but liked to refer to the entity known as "GeminiTay" using the ominous "SHE"/"HER".
The Gem body was actually a sentient mobile hive made of bees wax and had veins that distributed honey to the other parts.
Meanwhile, the Gem colony was made up of primarily worker bees with only a couple of male drones and a queen for each part of the body.
It was possible for Gem to lose a body part but they could be reattached easily enough. If a part was outright destroyed it would take a while for more bees to be gathered to recreate it.

If Gem is a swarm, wouldn't that technically make her a siphonophore?

Note
could you explain how nectophores, or more specifically, giant siphonophores, work? i just heard about them today and tried to do some research, but i am confused :( please help
Siphonophora fall in the class Hydrazoa which in itself is a little confusing. Hydrazoa are usually where an organism is actually a colony of many different smaller organisms that work together to form a "bigger organism", the most famous being the Portuguese Man 'O War.
Tumblr media
A single Giant Siphonophore (shown above) is made up of multiple different zooids (a single animal that's part of a colonial animal) that have different functions. The nectophore refers to one of those specific types of polyps. They're usually bell shaped and aid in movement of the creature.

I hope this helps!

Hi!! I was recently thinking about the deep sea recently and was wondering what your favourite deep sea creature is? Mines gotta be the vampire squid, because they turn inside out as a defense mechanism and that's relatable to me. Have a fantabulous day :D
This may sound generic but I like the anglerfish, not just bc of their gorgeous smiles but their reproduction. But also recently, I've gotten fascinated over siphonophorae and pyrosomes. I have an OC based on the latter like whoa can ya believe we got this giant tube worm thing in the ocean? And boi don't get me started on the siphonophore those guys come in all shapes and sizes, they even glow in the dark!! Best part, they're all made up of lil guys, colonies of em, all to form whatever the hell this is
