Welcome to Erianby… an Elder Scrolls Medieval Charter / Warwickshire Challenge!

~ The Rules of the Game ~

I am using VllyGrl’s Medieval Charter Challenge as the base for this game, as it’s such a good way to build up a full neighborhood. But, I love the complexity and deeper aspects of Heloise’s Warwickshire Renaissance Challenge, so will be using aspects of that as well.

I’m playing an Elder Scrolls themed game, so will be borrowing bits and pieces of lore as I please, while ignoring others. We’ll pretend it’s set in the 10th Era, so anything goes!

Medieval Charter Challenge

- Basically, I’m starting out with the families and lots as stated in the MCC. But, I’ve tripled the treasury funds required as I play with a slower ageing mod, and otherwise the challenge just ends too soon. - I’m using VllyGrl’s MCC to guide the lots that get added as the neighborhood grows, but I’m adding in some extra families and buildings, such as a bank and courthouse, to align with how I’m playing trades and careers (see below). - During the initial phase of the challenge, I’ll be using the MCC taxation and rent system. Once the initial neighborhood is completed, I’ll switch to the WRC taxation system.

Warwickshire Renaissance Challenge

- The aspects I’m starting out with are the ageing system and health rolls, health system, social class system, education system, and Royal Favour Points/Clerical Favour Points. - Once the main neighborhood is complete and the MCC is effectively finished, I’ll swap over to the WRC taxation system.

How I Play

- I’m using Hat’s Gestational Ageing Mod, where 4 days equal one year. This essentially aligns with the ageing system in the WRC. I’m also playing with a lot of the mods recommended by Hat at the end of that post, to make gaining skills etc harder. Can’t have a toddler maxing out their skills before their child birthday!

- I play with 12-day seasons (mainly to align with the months of the year below). Each household is played for 4 days for the first rotation before moving on to the next family. 4-day rotations are then repeated to the remainder of the seasonal round. Then on the last day of the season, taxes and other payments are due.

- I play with a slew of other mods, default replacements and other CC. Most of what I use can be found at my Pinterest.

- Days of the week are aligned with the ES universe: Morndas, Tirdas, Middas, Turdas, Fredas, Loredas, Sundas.

- I always start in Spring, so months of the year are as follows. Each month also lasts for 4 days.

Spring- First Seed, Rain’s Hand, Second Seed

Summer- Mid Year, Sun’s Height, Last Seed

Autumn- Hearthfire, Frost Fall, Sun’s Dusk

Winter- Evening Star, Morning Star, Sun’s Dawn

- I’m debating whether I put Hat’s Religion Mod back in… If I do, there will likely be 4-5 religions. I’m likely to take inspiration from @lavenderlight‘s game. Mainly because they know ES lore so much better than I do and I don’t want to reinvent the wheel.

- Speaking of being inspired by @lavenderlight, I’m also ‘borrowing’ their holidays and festivities. They were kind enough to share their edit of piqiwi’s Holiday Mod, which I’ve then adapted. I’ve also been inspired by the Holidays/Festivals in @mortia’s Dallùbach and @jonnyparable‘s Cottage Hills. Holidays/Festivals are as follows:

Spring- Hearts Day, 1st Day of Rain’s Hand. Dates, matchmaking, love potions, flower garlands, fertility well, dancing etc. Will have a festival lot. Two minor holidays will be First Planting and Second Planting. Sims will still have to go to work/school, but farmers will go to the temple to pray, and ill sims can be cured for free.

Summer- Mid Year Celebration, 4th Day of Mid Year. Bonfire, cooking contest, water balloon fight, hot air balloons, dancing, feasting. Will have a festival lot. A minor holiday will be Harvest’s End. Farmers will again go to the temple to pray and ill Sims can be healed for free.

Autumn- Witches Festival, 1st Day of Frostfall. Bonfire, feast, pumpkin carving, magic demonstrations, ?trick or treating, spooky stories etc. Maybe this is when the dragon vendor comes to town? Will have a festival lot. The minor festival in Autumn will be the Warriors Festival, think tourney. Sims can participate in a melee (fist fights, last Sim standing wins), sword fighting and an archery contest. Healers will be on hand to heal wounded warriors, and again, ill Sims can be healed for free.

Winter- Saturalia, 4th Day of Evening Star. Think Christmas… Feasts at home, yule logs, decorating evergreen trees, gift giving. If Sims have been good, the Gift Giver might also pay a visit! Winter gets another major holiday… the New Life Festival, held on the 4th Day of Morning Star. Bon fire, ice skating, snowball fights, fire crackers and sparklers.

Expanding the Main Neighborhood

- Erianby, the main neighborhood, is essentially the Royal Court neighborhood. Once the harbour and docks lot has been placed, it unlocks the three vacation ‘hoods. But, as I’m playing an Elder Scrolls themed game, the vacation ‘hoods will also be themed. I’ll mainly be playing with the human and mer races in the main ‘hood and sub ‘hoods… Nords, Bretons, Imperials, Redguard, Bosmer, Altmer and Dunmer. The mountain vacation ‘hood will be inspired by Orsinium and the locals will be Orcs. The tropical vacation ‘hood will be inspired by Black Marsh and the locals will be Argonian. Finally, the Far East vacation ‘hood will be inspired by Elsweyr and the locals will be Khajiit.

- I won’t be using a university sub ‘hood… Rather, I’ll use universities within the main ‘hood and sub ‘hoods.

- Once the monarch moves into the main ‘hood, two sub ‘hoods will be added. One will be a merchant town and the other will be a rural, farming area. This way I can have more nobles and hopefully some feuds/wars will develop!

Other Game Play Notes

- I’ve always thought it unrealistic that Sims start off with no skills in challenges. I have developed a system that designates a certain number of skill points for each age group and social class. So, a royal teen will start off with the same number of skill points as an adult peasant, and where an elder peasant starts off with 25 skill points, an elder noble starts off with 45. Skill points can be distributed however I see fit.

- Not all Sims can access aspiration rewards or lifetime aspiration benefits.

Aspiration rewards: Merchants and up may freely use aspiration rewards. Yeoman can access the rewards, but must gift them to a Sim in a higher social class so cannot use them themselves. Peasants are not allowed to access aspiration rewards.

Lifetime Aspiration Benefits: Peasants may only choose a secondary aspiration and cannot use any others, including the needs ones. Yeoman may choose a secondary aspiration, and use the motive benefits and their primary aspiration benefits. Merchants may select all of their primary and secondary aspiration benefits as well as the motive ones. Gentry and up may choose all benefits.

- Business owners may choose the money rewards, and families (including lower class families) may choose the money wish from the genie. However, to avoid families getting rich too quickly, these money rewards are taxed at the antiquity rate, which is double their income tax rate.

- I will have regional crops/plants/animals, but I’m still working this out. I primarily use the Sun & Moon items, and want to have the ability to trade. I might also make the sub ‘hoods have a different Seasons configuration to the main ‘hood.

The main ‘hood will have all 4 seasons, while the merchant town might have a double Autumn and the farming ‘hood may have a double Summer. The three vacation ‘hoods will also have specific seasons configurations.

- I will play with careers, and have adapted this list from @12raben to suit my own game. As careers are added with each level, so will specific community lots. I use medieval default replacements for all the Maxis careers, but will be editing them to significantly reduce the salary and bonuses.

- I will also be using these ‘custom’ LTW’s from @morgaine2005. I’m just going to have to keep an eye on when the Sims actually achieve them and then manually add the memory and aspiration points. I think that’s it!

This is Erianby in it’s infancy.

So far, most of the Sims have started out in the lower-class district. I have the gentry Squire (Nord), a peasant wood chopper (Bosmer), a peasant miner (Dunmer), a peasant midwife/herbalist (Breton), a peasant fisher (Redguard), a yeoman goatherd (Imperial) and a yeoman swineherd (Breton). There is also the gentry Royal Steward (Altmer), who lives in the Royal District.

Since Crescent is my favorite sim EVER, I wanted to make this about her ♥

1: How old is your sim? She's 80 y.o.

2. When is your sim’s birthday? November 22nd

3. What is your sim’s zodiac sign? Sagittarius

4. What is your sim’s ethnicity? She is a converted vampire, but she was born as a witch ♥

5. Does your sim have any nicknames? She doesn't. She really likes her name so she ask people to not put her any nickname

6. Do they have a job? If so what is it? She is a freelancer programmer

7. Where does your sim live? In a huge castle-like house in Windenburg

8.Who does your sim live with? With her husband, Caleb Vatore, three of her five children, Mikhail, Margrette and Lyssander, AND THE CUTEST DOG EVER, Sparky!! ♥♥♥♥ Also the ghost of her dead cat, Bastet, who’s always looking at Margrette for some reason.

9. What environment did your sims grow up in (strict, loving, cold etc.)? Weird (?) I mean, she was born as a witch, her mom is also a witch and she saw her father’s death so... yeah (?) when that happened they move out to Forgotten Hollow so it was kinda dark too, but always full of love.

10. What are your sim’s favorite food? She can’t eat human food :( but she used to love hot dogs

11. What is your sim’s favorite drink? Blood (?)

12. If they have one what is your sim’s favorite color? Wine red

13. Does your sim believe in any clichés (like love at first sight, etc)? Maybe some of them, like yeah, love at first sight, karma...

14. What is your sim’s sexuality? Straight

15. What is your sim’s gender identity? Female

16. Is your sim type a or type b? I didn’t get this one 😂

17. Is your sim introverted or extroverted? When she was teenager she was very very shy, also because her classmates always made fun of her scar. But after meeting Caleb and Devon (her best friend) she gained that confidence and with the years Crescent is someone totally different from her teen years, she loves to talk to strangers, even dead ones.

18. What is your sims favorite woohoo position? She just like to do it in the coffin (?)

19. Is your sim a pet person? If so what is their favorite animal? She’s actually a dog lover, right now she owns a Bull Terrier called Sparky, he’s old now and she used to have a sphyx cat, Bastet, she died of old age and her ghost is rounding the house. But she screams everytime she sees a dog.

20. Does your sim have a best friend? Yes, Devon (Parker) Cooper. They know each other since teenage, but now Devon is an elder, and Crescent is really sad about that.

21. What is/was your sim’s favorite school subject? History, she has a really good memory. .

22. Is/was your sim a high, mid or low achiever in school? She was a high. She was a perfect A student ♥

23. Are they planning to go or have they already been to college? If so, what would be or what was their major? Crescent did not go to college because after her 20th birthday she moved out to Strangerville to solve the mystery ♥

24. What are your sims political beliefs (if they have them)? None

25. What is one thing your sims wants to do before they die? Well, she can’t die (?) but it would be leave her children with great power and wisdom, especially the girls since they are also witches.

26. Does your sim have a favorite TV show (cable) and/or movie? She doesn’t watch a lot of TV

27. Is your sim a Netflix viewer? If so what are their top 3 shows. Yes! She loves Lucifer, OITNB and Grimm (she hated the end)

28. Does your sim like books? If so what’s their favorite one? She reads a lot since a kid. Her favorite books are and always will be Henry Puffer’s

29. Does your sim enjoy video games, if so what is their favorite one and do they play on PC or console? Her favorite is Alice Madness Returns, but she plays on PC because she hates console controls

30. What is your sim’s personal style? Dark most of the time, but she also enjoys pastel colors, she uses them in summer.

31. Does your sim have a lucky charm? Yes, the Vatore family ring

33. What kind of music does your sim listen to and who is their favorite artist? She actually enjoys pop, and she’s a good dancer!!

34. Is your sim a festive person? If so what’s their favorite holiday? Y.E.S. She loves EVERY SINGLE HOLIDAY, she’s so happy when is Christmas or Easter. But her favorite is Halloween!! ♥

35. What is your sim’s favorite type of weather? She loves autumn weather, not too cold and not too hot, and is always windy ♥♥

36. Does your sim prefer to start fights or finish them? Finish them, and if it’s possible ignore them... but sometimes.

37. Does your sim have a dream job? She wanted to be actress as a kid, she even went to acting club, but then she realised it was just a dumb dream

38. Does your sim have any siblings? She has a half-brother, younger than her. His name is Andrew and he was born after Crescent’s mother, Victoria, got married again.

39. Does your sim get along with their family? She loves her whole family more than anything in life and death. She actually wants her mother and brother to move up with her.

40 What is your sims favorite hobby? Cooking and programming. She’s really good at it ♥

41. What does your sim look for in a romantic partner? She’s already married, but she fell in love with Caleb because he was always a good and supportive friend, he help her when she moved to Forgotten Hollow with her mom, he always protected them from the not-so-friendly vampires, even if he knew about her linage, her always appreciated Crescent even with her scar. (Even so, Crescent rejected his first marry proposal)

42. What is a secret about your sim? She killed Caleb’s first wife 😵

43. What is a wish your sim has? See her children all grown up into grand master vampires, powerful witches and very human-like people. Also she wants to renew her vows with Caleb ♥

44. What is a flaw your sim has? She’s a sadic

45. How do others generally perceive your sim? Like a strong woman that you better be careful with, strong personality, and low patience. Also a fierce mom and wife, that can do anything if it’s for her family. Like a matron (?)

46. Does your sim have a greatest achievement? If so what is it? Bring her dead mother to life

47. If they have one, what is your sim’s greatest regret? Give her first daughter, Dandelion, a better education and more attention than any other of her children.

China Day 1: Saturday October 7th, 2017

Today, Clemence and I left for 2 weeks to teach at the Gan Quan International Language School in Shanghai, China. We met at the airport at 9am for an 11.35am flight.

We felt a bit underprepared for the trip, as both our school and the one we were visiting had literally given us no information about what we’d be doing except “teaching”. We caught up with Mel and Van, who had been here on the same trip a week prior, but even the information they gave us was still a bit vague. It was great to get a few heads up about things before leaving though.

The flight was long and uneventful. I watched 4 films (Guardians of the Galaxy II, Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants, Smurfs & Vacation), played some dumb in-flight game called Gearz and chatted with Clemence. I also tried to take a sleeping tablet and sleep it out, but it only worked for about an hour and the chairs were too upright, so I kept nodding off and waking myself up.

We finally arrived at Shanghai PPP airport at 7.15pm and walked off the plane, onto a bus. The bus drove us about 800m to the terminal and we went inside… bit unnecessary. The airport was surprisingly quiet, so we were through and out in about 20 minutes.

Once we walked through the arrivals gate, we were expecting to see a sign with “Keysborough” or “Ashleigh and Clemence” waiting with our school host, but we saw nothing. We saw a Chinese lady waving to us to come over and she asked if we needed help. She was baffled that I didn’t have a Chinese sim card to call someone and begrudgingly took us over to a kiosk where we had to scan our passports to get a wifi password. Here, I contacted George, our “guy” on WeChat and sent him a photo of ourselves so that he could find us. George is nice enough, though he seemed a bit nervous? He took all of Clemence’s bags and walked with her to the bus, while I trailed behind carrying my own stuff. The school bus sounded much like the Keysborough one – old and in need of help.

We drove for about 30 minutes, through the East of Shanghai, over the river, to the West side of Shanghai where the school was. The whole city is covered in a thick smoke and was weirdly quiet, because they were still celebrating the mid-Autumn festival.

George told us that we had a meeting with the head of English, May, at 9.30am the following day. He then walked us to our rooms and then say goodbye.

The rooms are huge and very spacious with 2 (bloody hard!) beds, desk, 2 bookshelves, air conditioner, table & chairs, kitchenette & bathroom. The bathroom was a bit unimpressive, with a huge hole in the room and grot around the plughole in the shower. Everything else was great though. I took Van’s advice and transferred everything from one bed to the other in order to try and make it more comfortable. It barely worked.

I unpacked my things and attempted to “nest” before Clem and I went for a walk down the street to suss out where we were (and get some snacks). We had to get the security guard of the school to open the gates for us. They were friendly, but spoke no English. They wanted to know why we were leaving and we had to mime “eating” before he understood. We also made friends with a cat.

The street absolutely stank. No good. Very familiar smells from my trips to Thailand and Bali, but this seemed to linger more. There were lots of food vendors on the street, but they were packing up and there seemed to be a lot of open hairdressers at 10.30 at night.

We stopped at a convenience store and I bought a tube of Smiths pringles, a box of Pocky, an iced tea, chocolate milk & a packet of noodles for $6 AUD.

When we got back, we said goodnight and went out separate ways. I messaged friends and family to say that I had arrived safely. I then had a shower, got in to bed to watch something on my laptop, but the Internet was too slow and wouldn’t connect my VPN, so I just went straight to sleep.
