💛 nolofinwean familial relationships
thank you nonnie for such an intriguing ask! unusual headcanons for the nolofinwëans, in no particular order:
aredhel is as capable an architect and engineer and city-builder as turgon, and was involved in raising up gondolin from the beginning, back when it was only something they plotted about in privacy.
she goes not need any divine vision to know a secret city is the right option. her acts of political defiance regarding orders from barad eithel are ongoing, determined and very deliberate.
idril's silver legs rust, in sirion. the salt and the damp get to them. her movements grows more stilted, mechanical. wooden floors and ship decks bends when she walks on it. tuor cleans them very carefully every night, but they do rust at a quickening pace.
fingon and argon got along better than any other sibling combination in the family.
turgon wears mourning clothes and keeps mourning rituals for elenwe all his life.
nolofinwë seriously considered getting remarried during his kingship. letters of diplomatic inquiry were drafted, but never sent, regarding thingol's only daughter.
small brown birds kept alighting in his windowsill as he wrote. windows broke; mirrors shattered; winds rose, whipping long, thin boughs against the thick walls of his fortress. they left deep cracks, and sap-red scars on the high walls. he took the hint, but never lost the suspicion that this alliance alone might have saved his people.
fingon prays to manwë a great deal during the crossing of the helcaraxë. not for mercy, as such, or guidance. it's testimonial, in a sense. an on-going conversation in confessions. he is by far the most spiritually minded in the family.
his belief in estel is based on dogma, his own theological studies, trust and the certainty that a little of the marred world will be saved, to some degree. his great battle is a prayer, in its way, as well as a dare: he believes in victory wholeheartedly, because he must, but he also knows victory against morgoth will happen, be it his or not.
the only thing he can do, the only good and great thing, is to attempt it while he has the power to do it, and leave the rest to the gods. he is very humble, and very at peace with the possibility of getting his people killed in what might be a failure.
turgon does not pray. he dies in gondolin to stay far from the sea, and nearness to the authority of the valar.
fingolfin's last word - his choked-out war-cry - was his father's name.

Silm ask 6/7/8?
Tumblr media
Combining these two due to the overlap, so I'm tagging @nin-varisse! Thanks for the asks! <3
6. Best m/f ship?
The first ship that popped into my head is Halenthir, because they give off autumnal vibes to me, and I am currently in fall mode. I love those snarky yet affectionate battle partners. But my favorite m/f ship is definitely Beren and Lúthien. I can't get over the fact that Tolkien made his wife the heroine of one of his stories, and their love is reflected so sweetly in Beren and Lúthien's unwavering support for one another. 10/10 ship.
7. Best f/f ship?
I love the idea of Nerdanel and Nienna finding solace in each other in the aftermath of tragedy. They have a lot in common, both wise yet burdened by grief. I'd like to imagine that they find happiness and teach each other how to move beyond the past.
8. Best m/m ship?
If we're talking strictly Silm, then I'm a sucker for Silvergifting. This bad boy can fit so many character dynamics in it. If we can include LOTR characters, then give me Glorestor where Erestor is a follower of Fëanor, and Glorfindel is his usual sunshine self. That is my JAM.
20. Funniest moment in the Silm?
"Get thee gone from my gate, thou jail-crow of Mandos" is a contender. Beren joking to Thingol about his newfound lack of a hand is another. Sauron turning into a werewolf and a giant snake AND a vampire in one battle and still losing might take the win, though.

🗡️ 🔥 for the Silm asks!
Helloooo, thanks for the ask @dreamingthroughthenoise!
🗡️ Defend your favorite war criminal (or make them worse - I'm not your mom).
Hmmm... Caranthir. I've been more interested in Caranthir lately, there seems to be the least content for him (tied for least with Amburassa at least,) and half of the things I see with him are usually just shipping him with Haleth. The other Feanorians get complicated analysis and what feels like endless content, shipping and otherwise.
I have a few headcanons for him; neurodivergent, (ADHD and autistic.) He also seems like a loner, he's the only Feanorian that's not really in a pair with one of his brothers. I like to think that he kept absolutely meticulous records. Ever since I read a fanfic about him falsifying records about the population of his people to spare more of them from the war, to protect them... I've started thinking that Caranthir the Dark, Caranthir, a loner who acts in anger or hate is a mask. It's a wall, a shield to protect himself and his people, much as I think Finrod's sunshine-y personality is a mask to hide his trauma. Everything hurts him deeply, so he puts up this wall to keep those who could hurt him away. Sometimes he can understand others as if he read their mind, all of their memories, everything, he can guess what they'll have for breakfast next week, but he still doesn't usually understand people, why they sometimes do certain things.
Anywayyy sorry this one turned into rambling about my Caranthir headcanons lol
🔥 Give us your hottest Silm hot take.
It's BLUE
Tumblr media
I tried to think of something else but I don't think I really have any other super controversial opinions lol.

4 & 15!
#4 (favorite valar/valier) Manwe, hands down. Good thing the prompt doesn't ask why bc the list is LONG. I remember it used to be Tulkas bc I was and am still fascinated by a god of war being famous for his mirth and laughter (he's still one of my faves). but after the deep studies i've done of Manwe (and Melkor) sighhhh...i'm in for him deep. and he's loves birds so win
#15 (favorite ted nasmith painting) I was asked this twice so I take the liberty of picking another picture! this one fights for first place anyway (among like 5 others) and is so fitting with the first prompt
Tumblr media
just...DAMN. I still have no words for what this painting did to me when i first saw it. still does

Would you do 4, 10, and 12 for the Silm ask game, please?
Thanks for the ask!!
I've already answered 4 and 12 here
10. What made you read the Silmarillion in the first place?
I was intrigued by the little poem Aragorn sings about Luthien in the first LotR movie (I saw the movies before reading the books), so I searched about it on google and found out about the Silm that way

Ok, so Noldolantë, "The Fall of the Noldor" is a lament composed by Maglor about what happened before, during and after First Kinslaying at Alqualondë. It's such a good song that it's played regularly in Aman and Valar listen to it often (I swear, I swear it was in the Silmarillion I just can't find it now).
It's also a more or less common fanon that Maglor continues writing Noldolante through the whole First Age. Makes sense - it's about fall of the Noldor, and Noldor did a lot of falling back then.
Headcannon time: So my first thought was that Noldolante must a long, long, long epic of a song. So it probably has many parts, right? Iliad has 24 books/parts, somehow I think Noldolante would be at least just as long, and there are longer epics. And again, just like Iliad, unless you're a scholar, in the daily life you don't really listen to/read the whole thing, just reread and repeat the most dramatic fragments. What I'm trying to impress upon you all is that the story would have different segments, or chapters, if you will.
And if Maglor continues to write the story during the FA, there would absolutely be a moment in the lament where the OG Noldolante becomes Noldolante 2, and even Noldolante 3. There may be the same musical motif or something, I decided that Maglor IS that good of a bard to keep it all consistent enough so you know it's all the same story, but the style changes a lot - it's been 400 years in the making, let The Music Elf have fun!
So, Point 1: Many, Many Parts, basically Maglor's FA WIP
My second thought was that, while Feanor invented his alphabet, elves learned their history mostly through oral tradition aka songs and spoken stories. Noldolante is definitely a historical record, where a historical event was archived for future generations.
(It was a also a way to deal with grief, guilt and blame Maglor and all Noldor have faced regarding First Kinslaying - free therapy! But that's not what this post is about)
Archived.
My 2.5 thought was that Noldolante isn't just recallings of how pretty and horrified the beach looked during the murdering or how mad and sorrowful the sea was at everyone during the voyage or even how awesome and charismatic Feanor looked during his speeches that every single Noldo was ready to fight Morgoth barehanded in his name - no, this is a record of who killed who, who got killed by whom, and how.
Noldor and Teleri knew each other (were friends, even!) before the First Kinslaying, so I'm confident that after a lot of interviews, detective work, and cross-referencing, Maglor could and would create a very good... name list. Practically every Noldo and Teler present during First Kinslaying would get a stanza in a song, more if he killed someone, most if he killed many people. Killers and killed would show up twice, first in a fragment listing the killers and their victims, then in a part listing the victims and their murderers. Basically it's the same thing twice, but from different POVs. With when, where and how included.
(It was seen to be in bad taste to compare kills during Maglor's Regency, when most of his interview-part work happened. People did it anyway. There were a Saddest Kill, Funniest Kill, and Weirdest Kill discusions. There was a Tier List. These were weird times to be a Feanorian Noldo.)
(It WAS in Bad Taste, but at least people talked about it. I cannot stress enough how much free therapy this lament provided)
(Little did they know, when Teleri started getting reembodied in Aman, they had very similar discussions, but more in a "I can't believe he killed me like THAT" way. Long, long, long after the First Age. Noldolante is a gift that keeps giving)
So, Maglor had all the historical grith and no common shame to create a "We Killed All These People And We Feel Bad About It" banger of a song, and every Noldo had a very personal reason to at least remember the fragments they are in. It's a hit on a scale never seen before.
(I'm not sure how to tackle the issue of Nolofinweans and Arafinweans learning about Noldolante after crossing the Ice. But there were discussions. There was anger, there was "????", there was controversy. Basically, the song got bigger and bigger rep no matter what your opinion on it was. By the time of Mereth Aderthad it was an important cultural and political piece and at least Fingon's forces were included in the main song. It had parodies.)
Point 2: Archive Function/Kill count storage. Cultural phenomen, every Noldo included
This is where my personal nonsense begins: Main Noldolante was done, there was nothing more to say about First Kinslaying, all killings and deaths were well documented.
But the Siege started. And the Noldor kept dying.
It was less dramatic than it sounded - between the big battles the siege was maintained, but orc raids also happened and sometimes one to few Noldor died in skirmishes. The legal procedure was to document the death of a fellow elf and send a word to king Fingolfin. The cultural procedure, technically started by Feranorians but adapted by many more, was to send the name, common characteristics and cause of death to Maglor's Gap. After few months, King Fingolfin would send reinforcements, short condolences and financial compensation if they had family. After few months, family of an elf would also receive a personal lament for them and a place for them in a Noldolante.
Yes, every lament Maglor created in that time was technically part of the Noldolante. Noldolante 1.5, if you will. Laments make in that time were very customized, and simpler than Noldolante Main, but were still considered a part of the same song. Of course, nobody was expected to know and remember laments for every single Noldo, younger Noldor born in Beleriand could even only know fragments about their family members. Only Maglor would ever know Noldolante in full, but it was understood that everyone had their place in The Song.
The results of Great Battles were harder to document, but Maglor did that. Of course, Dagor Bragollach was hard on him personally, but he worked his way through.
(High King Fingon forbade creating laments for his father. There were no songs for Fingolfin. Apart from in Noldolante, of course. Of course. Maglor did not share the lament with anyone, but he sat long hours and many nights with a blank paper before him, looking at the candle flame and thinking of the past and the future. The song unsung, but there)
Nirnaeth was... Maglor was never more hated and more approached at the same time than then. Still, Noldolante grew and grew, as if people knew the end was near.
It was Second Kinslaying that destroyed the myth of Maglor's song. Feanorians didn't know the Sindar they killed, but surely, they couldn't just left their names unmentioned like they did with orcs? So, Noldor talked, but the battle happened in caves - it wasn't uncommon to find dead bodies in empty rooms, with no witnesses to what happened. Surviving Sindar didn't want to share any names, even when Maglor strong-armed some into talking with him, and good for them. Maglor made a big lament anyway. Maglor, wild, with no shame and dead brothers, with legacy crumbling around him. Noldolante, with holes.
After Third Kinslaying, Noldor didn't want to talk. Lament for Sirion didn't have any names. Clearly, songs weren't a way to go anymore, it was always about live witnesses. And so Maglor raised the twins.
Lament for Maedhros was sung repeatedly. There was no one to hear it.
Point 3: Only Maglor knows Noldolante in full. But that doesn't matter, because everyone knows the important part: the Noldolante is finished. The Star of Hope rises in the West and the story goes on. The Fall has ended.
#silm#silmarillion#noldolante#maglor#yet another post that went in different direction than I planned#started with meta went into headcannon and ended with fanfic angst#I wanted to end it with crack!!!#I mean. I mean#it all makes kind of some sense if we're talking about elves here#but guys Noldor had Men and Dwarves as allies#Maglor would want them in his Historical Record song#I think with Dwarves they would mainly refuse when he asked them if they wanted a part in Noldolante#so maybe he would only get some allies and personal friends of Maedhros in#but Men#guys Men. they would agree and they would make lists and it would become Clown City so fast#but Sons of Feanor aren't known for their ability of knowing when to quit#so Maglor has a Noldolante 3.0 Standard Version with 254 Parts that has Elves and an Occasional Dwarf Only#and Special Version Noldolante Deluxe Extra Edition with 547398134 Parts that includes Men#everyone is included you don't have to die in battle#all common causes of death have a dedicated jingle to them#to the point you know a man's cause of death after 3 notes#these parts of Noldolante well the music bit actually survived into the Fourth Age#the words are gone but the music is played at funerals in some places#The Noldolante Main survived only in parodies though#actually Finished Noldolante is a very good thing huh#as in no more Fall of The Noldor#they can finally catch some break#I believe that during Maglor's Regency Era all Noldor did was Processing. and breeding horses.#Noldolante? more like Maglor Finally Discovers Shame: A Story#I think some personal revelations on legacy and connections between children and life's works would be made

Hello, could you write something about Thranduil if you would like? About how I take care of an elf who was cut short as a punishment and her hair was cut very short, even though she was innocent. This is a trauma for her, because for elves, and especially for elven women, hair is something very important. Of course, if you feel like it.
Since you haven't specified a timeline for when this could have occurred, I took some liberties with the HCs below. I hope you don't mind.
Pairing: Thranduil x Fem. Reader
Themes: Angst | Soft
Warnings: Hair loss as a form of punishment | Bullying/Thranduil being a bit of a bully in the beginning.
Tumblr media
🌿You were one of the Ñoldor, born years after the Kinslaying at Doriath, but still, you had been tarred with the same brush. You were forced to wander through the land as other elves wanted nothing to do with you and your kin.
🌿Your situation worsened after you found yourself in Greenwood the Great. You were captured after having gotten lost in the forests and brought before Oropher. As a survivor, he refused to believe your pleas of innocence, that you were born during a different time and played no part in the slaughter. He decides to make an example of you and orders your hair to be cut off. This was a horrific experience. Your hair was thick and fell past your waist. You took great care of it, styling it with flowers and what little you had for adornments. All of it was taken from you and you were put to work as a servant in his household.
🌿Oropher's son, Thranduil paid you no mind most of the time. The other times? That was when you saw another side to him. He was not overtly cruel, but he did not hesitate to throw hurtful barbs your way. You kept your head and endured. Having a roof over your head and decent food in your belly was more important, and you didn't know what kind of fate awaited one who insulted a prince of the realm.
🌿Once, during supper, he did go too far and your veneer cracked. You fled the dining room in tears. There was no apology, and you knew better than to expect one. However, the barbs stopped and all you got were icy glares.
🌿This continued until one fine day, evidence of your innocence came to light. Oropher learned you were born years after the Kinslaying and had nothing to do with the tragic events that unfolded in Doriath. The king, not wanting to be seen as unjust, apologized to you in front of his court. As for Thranduil?
🌿Thranduil avoided you, and when he could not do it, he avoided looking at you. It was a reprieve, a welcomed one, and you grabbed onto it with both hands.
🌿Then one day you found yourself being moved to better rooms, given better clothes, a handful of jewels, and even your few adornments. When you asked who was so kind, the servants refused to answer. All you were told was that you were to ask for anything you could ask for and that it would be given to you.
🌿 Despite this change in fortune, you kept to yourself, asking for very little and staying out of everyone's way. You did not trust the elves of Greenwood. Not them or their king or their crown prince. You were, however, all too aware of someone looking at you the whole time whenever you went about your day. When you turn, you'd find Thranduil looking away quickly, his cheeks turning bright pink.
🌿Then he came to you while you were in the gardens. He stumbled over his words, asking about your day, and whether your new accommodations were to your satisfaction. You were polite but cool, and could not get away from him fast enough.
🌿Little gifts would show by your door every morning. Little notes too. One of your gifts was an herbal hair tonic. The note that came with it encouraged you to use it, that it would make your hair grow faster.
🌿Thranduil will seek you out more often now. You kept up a wall, remembering the things he said and how he made you feel. Still, he was a lot kinder to you, introducing you to the other elves, and showing you around Greenwood.
🌿He would later offer to help you with your hair, when he came upon you in the garden, struggling with a braid. Frustrated and left with little choice, you accept his offer, albeit very reluctantly. He would take his time, weaving flowers and ribbons into your hair and telling you stories to keep you entertained.
🌿This too became a ritual, but a pleasant one. The two of you would go off into the gardens, and Thranduil would braid your hair while telling you stories. You find yourself looking forward to spending time with him. You finally open up to him, talking about your family, about your life. He would talk of Doriath, of what life was like under the reign of Thingol and Melian.
🌿He finally apologizes and asks for a chance to earn your forgiveness, for not believing you and treating you with little respect. You finally learn it was Thranduil who had you moved to your new chambers and had your belongings returned to you, and made sure you were looked after.
"Keep braiding my hair," you proposed, wanting him to put in the effort in earning your forgiveness, "And we will see."

Hi! Totally adore your Silm art so regarding your offer for art prompts: Personally, I'm very intrigued by your hc that elves have six fingers... so how about a sketch of Maglor playing a harp (only the hands?)?
Thanks in advance & stay safe!
Tumblr media
for those who understand anatomy: don't judge me on how these fingers are supposed to work lol. and if anyone wants to figure out how a sixth finger would work - what tendons go where, muscles, palm size, etc. -please let me know
claws would help as picks, but you might have to file them down a bit so you don't snap a string or scrape the varnish lol
and stay safe too!

5, 10, 11 for the silm asks?
5. Best canon ship in the Silm?
Vingilot. Second place goes to the Teleri's swan ships. Third place to Beren and Lúthien.
10. What made you read The Silmarillion in the first place?
I wanted to know more about Tolkien's world! A high school friend recommended the Silm to me and described it as a history of Middle-Earth. I tried reading it in high school and could not get through it, but the imagery of the Ainulindalë and the music of creation stuck with me. Tried again in 2021 and found the rest of the Silm to also be deeply moving and inspiring.
11. Ainulindalë and Valaquenta – yay or nay?
Yay! Do people not like these parts of the Silm? XD Then again, I am all about the Ainur, so maybe I'm biased.

Hi @echo-bleu, thanks for the ask!
🪄You can change how one (1) Big Event goes down in the Silm - either in favor of something in HoME or something you made up. What happens instead? Tell us the cool stuff!
Finrod would survive 🥺. Perhaps by Luthien getting there earlier, or his wounds not being as severe. I think, once he recovers, he would also finally face the trauma that he was hiding behind the mask of a sunshine-y personality, and it would change how events from there out go. After Beren and Luthien's success in getting the silmaril, I think that Finrod would be hugely supported in getting Nargothrond back by Thingol. The Celegorm and Curufin would definitely be tossed out of Nargothrond sooner. Now it's been a while since I've read CoH, but I think he would treat the Turin situation very differently from Orodreth. I would like to say that Nargothrond stood for longer, though it definitely would still be sacked and destroyed at some point because well... everything was. With Finrod's closeness to Ulmo, with the vision to build Nargothrond perhaps he would've gotten a similar message that Turgon did, to flee the city before it was sacked and so on.
Also I think High King Finrod would be a lot of fun, I know Gil-galad was technically next in succession BUT he also wasn't of age when he became king so I think it would at least be temporarily pasted to Finrod, at least until Gil-galad was of age. And now that i think about it, Finarfin arriving in Beleriand to Finrod being king is just. I'm tearing that apart with my teeth I love it lol. I know it's more horrifying for Finarfin to arrive and have a Finwean that he doesn't even know as king, but I think Finrod as king would be a whole other kind of nasty shock.
I generally think Finrod surviving would have a bit of a uniting effect on the elves as a whole too, there would likely be a significant attempt by Maedhros and Maglor to show that they did not support Celegorm and Curufin's coup and that they supported Finrod, and with Thingol likely supporting him in winning back Nargothrond I think it could unite the Noldor and Sindar a little. The silmaril would definitely complicate matters but with how the Feanorians didn't even seem to consider getting the Silmaril from Luthien I don't think it would be immediately bad. And with Finrod as a in between perhaps the second kinslaying could be averted or made less severe. (I'm not taking a stance on if the Feanorian's claim to the Silmaril is valid or not though, that argument gives me a headache lol)
Wow this got long! But I had fun going down the rabbit hole of possibilities lol
Thanks again for the ask!

15, 18 for silm asks
#15 (favorite ted nasmith painting) this was quite a hard choice i have to admit
Tumblr media
At Lake Cuivienen
there's too much nostalgia when i see this painting for me to not list it as a favorite. It's the first one of his I ever saw, it's the artwork on my first copy of the silm and it's what drew me to pick up the book...this just hits a special spot in my heart every time i see it
there's so many to pick from!!!
#18 (what's the hardest name or word for you to pronounce?) i think I'll have to go back to when tolkien's world was still new to me. Pronunciation tends to come easily to me and I can't really recall names that are/were a stumbling block. Telperinquar I recall being one of the harder ones to figure out how to say, and then for it to roll off the tongue smoothly.
No different answer. Araw. The Sindarin name for Orome. I "know" how it sounds but I still can't really get it out of my mouth!

4, 12, and 23 for this ask game?
Thanks so much for the ask!
4. Feanor, Fingolfin or Finarfin? - who are you most like in real life?
Hmm I'm not like any of them, i I don't think. They are too cool for me xD. But i do share some things with Feanor and Fingolfin. Even though i do have shared interests with Feanor (languages, arts and crafts, jewels, learning, exploring etc), I lack the confidence and charisma. I'd never be able to speak in front of a crowd, and i think that's a key element in Feanor's personality. Now when it comes to Fingolfin... I suppose i can perfectly hide my emotions from anyone, if i so wish. I can put on a 'mask' and you'll never be able to guess what I'm thinking/feeling. Also, I'm generally extremely patient, but if/when that patience snaps or if I fall into despair, I'd be ready to charge with all my remaining strength and will at any foe.
12. If you had to describe yourself with a character from Tolkien's works, who would it be?
...Turin, quite unfortunately.
23. Who is Gil-Galad's father?
Even though i am a Russingon fan, i can only see Gil as Fingon's son (because of the Silm and most fanfics I've read). I've made a post about this before, i think, and it would take too long for me to analyse my reasoning...
