❤️: Which character do you think is the most egregiously mischaracterized by the fandom?

a lot of my very very dear friends have this opinion and i don't want to start any shit about it bc i think everyone is allowed to have opinions! but there's a VERY popular characterization of lust - which is even on her wiki - that she does not represent lust but actually bloodlust. and iiiiiii. okay. i think that death of the undying is exactly no one's base normal state. and i think that using death of the undying to explain her desires is not looking at the full picture. out of her siblings she is the most careful, the most responsible, she holds them back from violence and doesn't like... chase people down? like she fails to kill maes hughes and then just lets envy take care of it. or in the manga she threatened a child and then got the information she wanted out of marcoh because of it. she could have killed the kid, but she didn't. like... yeah i think she enjoys violence, but i don't think she purses it with the same kind of vigor as someone comprised of bloodlust would.

i don't think she really gets to be lust either though, which is kind of sad, but i think she's actually in a really similar position to sloth of people. like, sloth is lazy, but he doesn't get to be, because he has a job to do. similarly, any actual seduction lust does is part of her job and like, for her father. so anyway yeah. i think she isn't bloodlust, but she doesn't get to be lust itself either, and she should get to be.

🧡: What is a popular (serious) theory you disagree with?

i disagree with fandom theories all the time but i truly am drawing such a blank here. keep just thinking about popular characterizations and ships instead. i guess parental royai or like, the idea that roy & riza are like parents to the elrics. to me they are like. older cousins or aunt/uncle or just Significant Adults That Don't Have To Be Family But Are Still Important Because That's How Life Is. especially bc to me if anyone is their adopted parent it's sigzumi. or pinako.

💛: What is a popular ship you just can’t get behind, and why?

i think most people who follow me probably know that my answer to this is royai. which is. wild because i'm literally in a royai server but like. they are queerplatonic. to me. i could talk abt it all day but im sure people have heard all that so instead,

and in the spirit of the spiciness of this ask game,

i will also add that i personally do not like olivier/riza at all. the evidence that i've seen people use for it - the line where olivier asks about her wellbeing - she also asks about havoc's! which honestly. to me. is so fucking awesome. her two best friends in east are RIZA AND HAVOC?? and the fact that she intentionally put them on the same level to me implies she sees them the same way and i can't imagine her categorizing both of those things as romantic. also. i feel very strongly that like. riza is already someone's little guy and olivier already has two little guys and they're both really happy with that set up. so them being best friends is honestly so special to me and i wanna see more of that !

Normally, I prefer to be positive. Hey, I got an ask! Never mind that the ask is oddly defensive. But at this particular moment in time, you’re coming for me during a week where I am in no mood to look at life through rose-colored glasses.

Let’s get to your questions.

What do you *mean* sig and izumi don't have a ship name??

I never said that they didn’t have a ship name. I said they needed one in my tags and that tag was meant as a reminder to myself to find a ship name later (when not in the middle of an uncomfortable, medically prescribed fast) and edit my post. You inferred something I didn’t imply, but for argument’s sake, I’ll give you the participation points for this assumption.

Let’s say I did imply that they don’t have a ship name. It would have been enough to drop me an ask to share the ship name you use, and I would have edited my tags to include it. A ship name that in a tumblr search (a terrible search feature to be fair) returns a whole four (4) results. It wouldn't surprise me if a lot of people who are FMA fans weren’t aware of the ship name and that doesn’t make anyone a lesser class of fan.

Have I just been unironically been calling this pairing "Sigzumi" without this lovely ship having an ACTUAL fan-certified ship name?

Why would I know what you do and whether you do it unironically? Self-reflection can be a great ally in times of personal strife.

FMA fandom, I love you. Y'all are great.

Are we? Are we really great? FMA, more than any other fandom I’ve participated in recently, has caused me the most issues. I’ve watched talented fandom friends happily walk away from FMA because they can’t stand the inane drama. I get mean-spirited anon asks almost exclusively from FMA. I have been all but chased out of the fandom because I hold problematic opinions.

More often than not, FMA is not a fandom where people lift each other up. Too often, we're tearing each other down, unless you happen to meet incredibly specific and subjective criteria and are allowed into the hallowed inner circles of sanitized interpretation and content in line with already established fanon mores. If you pass the rigorous screening process after a sufficient number of pleasing notice-me-senpai gestures, the fandom might be great for you. If you don't, the best you can hope for is to enjoy your FMA experience in the little corner of the fandom you make for yourself.

Why are we sleeping on Sig/Izumi?

I’m not. Even though I write very little for FMA anymore, I posted a Sig/Izumi fic in January.

Out of curiosity what are your top 10 FMA pairings?

I assume you mean romantic and that it can be for any series, because I do have quite a few from both, but since you say 10, that’s what I’ll do. (even though I’d love to go on all day about this.

My OTP of all time is Roy x Riza.

I love their dynamic, I love how she’s not afraid to stand up to him, doesn’t put up with his bs, and I love obvious it is how much he cares about her. I also really like the mutual understanding they have between one another. ARgGG it’s just such a sweet pairing in both series! x3

2. EdWin

While I don’t like the slapstick scenes with them(i find it rather tasteless personally), other than that, this pairing is a full go for me. I like how she’s able to motivate Ed when he needs it most, how she’s always there to push him forward when she has to, and how she’s so strong all the time, as well as how tender and caring Ed is towards her when it comes down to it. I really like it in Broho, but I always have a severe weakspot for 2003 EdWin, given how beautifully tragic the pairing ended in that series. T-T

3. LingFan

I admit that while this pairing is nice, I am a little bit sad that we didn’t get any flash backs with them or any more screen time than we did. But regardless I do still ship it. I respect her devotion to him, but more than anything I just want him to let her know just how important she is to him. She’s always seeing her own life as worthless if she’s not able to protect him and it makes me so sad. But when he said he was proud of her in the manga, it made me so happy.

4. Trishenheim

This one I’m kind of uncertain of how to feel sometimes, since he did abandon her, Ed and Al, but I understand his reasoning and the fact still stands that Trisha is the best thing that ever happened to Hohenheim. Her love to him was unconditional and I always found it so sweet that she wanted him to stop seeing himself as a monster. And in 2003, for Trisha to still love him despite knowing his flesh was literally rotting, that’s some A+ devotion right there.

5. Sizumi

I won’t get all bubbly over this one and I don’t have too much to say about this, but I do have a huge soft spot for this one, especially in 2003, given how Izumi dies and stuff and Sig is left without her. It really HURtS, okay. (ALSO CAN WE TALK ABOUT HOW SIG IS SNORING WITH HIS EYES OPEN??? ALSO, IZUMI IS ONE DEVOTED WIFE IF SHE CAN SLEEP NEXT TO THAT NOISE OR DOESN’T MIND IT)These were the majority of the canon pairings that I really like(Well Lan Fan x Ling isn’t confirmed but it’s pretty much implied). Onto the fan pairings.

6. EdLing

It goes without saying that Ed and Ling are a lot alike in some ways and I feel like they could relate on quite a few things if they got the chance to sit down and talk. But additionally Ling is so clingy with Ed while Ed is like what’s this guy’s pROblEm and I just LOVE it. They’re the type of chaos duo that would get themselves into lots of trouble and make it double for both Winry and Al, (oh and for Roy too, who would probably have numerous headaches trying to put up with and rectify their shit)Plus, I really like Ling’s bluntness and honesty about things, it kind of mirrors Ed’s bluntness but in different ways. I sometimes like to imagine what Ling could have been like in 2003 and put in my own theories. What if he had met Ling’s alternate in CoS and stuff Idk.

7. ShesWin

Their friendship in 2003 is so wholesome and is kind of something I wish had made it to Brotherhood. I just REALLY like the moments they had together, from their quirkiness, to arguments about cooking, to tapwiring, to sneaking around in the military to literally everything, and I think that Sheswin is BEAUTIFUL okay

8. WinPan

I don’t have too much to say on this (since Paninya wasn’t a pickpocketer in 2003 so the differences would take longer to discuss), but Winry is a great inspiration to Paninya and their friendship is wholesome just like 2003! Sheska and Winry’s. All around great pairing. Also Winry’s fascination with Paninya’s automail is so cute.

9. AlWrath (2003)

Now this one doesn’t have a lot of context behind it except for in CoS, where Wrath literally sacrifices himself so Al can see Ed again, and I think it’s so heartbreaking. I just wish we could have got more screentime with them and some more of the dialogue with them from the script animated.10. Hyuroi

I especially like this one in the 2003 universe, which is noticeably darker, In Episode 25, Hughes came into Roy’s hotel room after Roy had been considering human transmutation and suicide, and honestly the scene was both heartbreaking and gut-wrenching to see Roy that depressed and torn up over the Ishval war and his guilt.

Even in 2003 and Brotherhood canon verse, I feel like Hughes is the type that would sit with Roy when he could tell he was caving, sometimes maybe Roy even called Hughes over because he just didn’t want to be alone. Sometimes, they would drink, Hughes going on about his daughter to lighten up the mood on the best nights and on the worst nights Hughes would say nothing because he already knew it wasn’t what Roy needed at the moment, that Roy just needed some company without words being spoken. Hughes seems to know Roy just as well as Riza, after all. He would know when and when not to joke.11. Some other pairings (sort of crack ships) I ship are Olivier x Roy, Olivier x Izumi, Russel x Winry, Fletcher x Mei, Selim x Elysia, Greed x Martel, and Martel x Dorchet. There are others but I’m brain dead atm.

Best: I don't know that I really have a favourite. I like most of them, although I think I have a love/hate relationship with Perennial Pleasures. XD Worst: Any of the ____ Me ~ Ship, titles. I went lame and just use the prompt for those.

Best/worst first line?

Best: The first thing Max noticed about Henry, when he opened the door, was that his little brother had finally given up on pretending he wasn't going bald. (From Drawn in Dragon's Blood) Worst: Four days. (From Call Me ~ EdRoy)

Best/worst last line?

Best: Somewhere off to his right, Edward could just make out the sound of a little girl shouting in delight, and he grinned into the wind, breathing in the taste of freedom. (From Dragon's Gold) Worst: Their path back ended up taking them through a brightly lit Christmas market, and it cheered him up a bit. Perhaps, he realised, he could still turn the evening around by getting Victor his birthday present. (From Nuts; it just feels so unfinished, ugh.)

General questions:

Looking back, did you write more fics than you thought you would this year, less than you thought, or about what you predicted?

I mean, I so DID NOT expect that many fics. But, comparing to past years when I jumped into a new fandom, this is actually pretty normal for me. This year (2017) is likely to be a lot saner, judging by past experience.

What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted last year?

Ed/Slave 23. Also AlLing. Both were kind of requests that grew minds of their owns, but neither of those ships were on my radar even a little before my muse made a grab for them. So. LOL

What’s your favourite story this year? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you the happiest.

I'm gonna cheat a bit, actually, and pick two: Skin Deep and Colours in Your Eyes. Colours in Your Eyes was actually a lot of fun to write, despite it being a really stressful time for me irl; I got to play in a trope I'd never really done before, and I had to do a lot of research for the Xing stuff, but I like learning new stuff like that, so that was cool. I also had a lot of fun working with my artists, passing back and forth ideas, which just made it more awesome after I'd finished. It's also one of the more polished pieces I posted, because I had time to reread it multiple times before posting, which makes me feel a lot better about it. Skin Deep was probably the fic I stressed out about the most, because it was dealing with a world I'm only passingly familiar with, and the last time I tried writing a trans character, it bombed. But people really seem to like it, and I've got a lot of really grateful responses to it, so I love it a lot for that, for being something awesome for the people who needed trans!Ed, and for giving me a second chance to understand that segment of my community a little better.

Okay, NOW your most popular story.

Reverti. Holy SHIT. I mean, before it even finished it was topping the popularity lists on AO3 for the FMA fandom, and I think it's happy to stay there. LOL (It's not quite as epic on FFN, but it's still on the first page for most favourites and follows, which is pretty impressive, given it's almost 2 years newer than anything else. ^^; )

Story most underappreciated by the universe?

I mean, lol, the most recent stuff has the fewest kudos and comments and such, which is to be expected. Anything rarepair or gen is always going to get less attention than a big ship. I am a little surprised to see my Hyuuroi pieces so far down on my list, but I guess that really is a smaller corner of the fandom than I was thinking.

Story that could have been better?

I wish I'd had the time to actually END Nuts, but I didn't, and I didn't really want to rewrite the ring scene, but there had to be a better way to end it, ugh. Also, In the Middle could use a serious dose of being fleshed out; it's really just a summary of a fic, I think, but I don't know that I'll ever have the energy to write it properly.

I mean, those song rewrites, I always hear about people attempting to sing them. XD

Story with single sweetest moment?

Sweetest? Shit. Uh, I mean, probably Skin Deep or Reverti? They both had some pretty dark points, yeah, but when they went fluffy, they were serious about it. XD

Hardest story to write?

Spirit's Fall, probably? I was so excited about my original idea, but those last couple of chapters, especially, just dragged. Also, the song rewrites, a bit, because rhyming is just not part of my skill-set.

Easiest/most fun story to write?

Colours in Your Eyes was probably the easiest, because once I hit my stride, it went until the end. The Chimera-Dragons 'Verse, though, especially Gold and Tongue, those were both a lot of fun to write.

Did any stories shift your perceptions of the characters?

I mean, this was actually 2015, but working on the Our Sinner's Redemption series, I grew to really love Darius and Heinkel. They have such minor parts in canon, but I ended up super loving them, especially Darius.

Most overdue story?

The second part of Our Sinner's Redemption? ^^; Which I didn't get much work done on for NaNo, so people should not look for it any time the beginning of this year. Published, though: I'll Follow the Echoes was written for the Fandom Challenge and I didn't even start on it until almost a month after the due date, whoops. ^^;

Did you take any writing risks this year? What did you learn from them?

Skin Deep, definitely. (See above for more on that.)

What are your fic writing goals for next year?

Not to run myself quite so ragged over the summer, lol. I almost threw in the towel a couple of times, I was so stressed out, so we're not going to do that again. I can pick, like, two fandom events, maybe three. And if they're ship weeks, I need to not try to do a fic for each day, that was a bad idea. ^^; That said, I'd like to do an event or two again, because they're a lot of fun, and they're a nice little reason to let my muse at prompts that I would otherwise do my best to keep him FAR away from. XD I also want to finish We All Need Saving (OSR 2) in time to start posting it before the end of the year, maybe even work on the third part of the series, Dancing With the Devil, for NaNo. I'd also kind of like to do fics to slip into holiday cards again next year, because that was a lot of fun this year. (Might end up just using the stats of who picked which fics from 2016 for what to write for 2017, though, instead of doing a poll. Although, if I announce a poll when putting up 2016's fics next month-ish, I might get a better response; it was posting the Harrymort fic that got most of the HP people's interest. LOL)
