Title: Home With Broken Hearts Fandom: Fullmetal Alchemist Author: Batsutousai Rating: General Pairing: Maes Hughes/Roy Mustang, Gracia Hughes/Maes Hughes Warnings: time travel, polyamory, established relationship, canon character death, grief Summary: Roy wakes to find himself back in time, a few days before Maes’ murder.

This fic was one of a selection of prompts from @surferofdreams, and was requested as Hughes/Mustang, time.

"Roy!" Maes shouted, voice familiar and dearly missed, and Roy found his eyes watering quite without his say, as Maes continued, "I completely forgot to drag you out while I was in East, so you never got a gift for my precious Elicia! Do you know what that means?"

They'd had this conversation. Roy had been tired and sour, trying to keep on top of the whispers of the Elric brothers finding Dr Marcoh during their trip south to get Edward's automail repaired, and upset that everything with Scar had stolen so much of his rare time with Maes. Maes had said he was going to buy Elicia something ridiculous and unnecessary and Roy would have to pay him back, Roy had snapped something back that...had probably been ruder than strictly necessary, but anyone tapping lines and listening in would have shrugged it off, especially if they often listened to Maes and Roy's conversations.

Maes hadn't shrugged it off, had gone stiff in a way that Roy knew meant he'd landed a hit, and he'd felt guilty about it for days, finally calling Maes at home and having to give his apology to Gracia, before she would let him give it to Maes.

And then, three days later, Maes had been murdered.

I'll never actually write this fic but here's a text post of some RoyEd (plus past HyuRoy)

So there's absolutely zero chance Roy was not in love with Hughes

And Hughes liked Roy A Lot so... why not?

They were an unnamed thing before and during the war

then sometime passed where they were assigned to separate locations

and Hughes starts talking to Gracia

and when they meet again Roy couldn't be happier that Hughes found someone he loves

but, he doesn't know where that puts him

Hughes informs him that Gracia knows about Them™ and is okay with it

and Roy is worried he's second place but he's not going to give up their relationship for that

and they stay a thing even while stationed in different cities

they manage

and then

Enter Edward

Roy's had his eyes on him since he was a kid

and now he's still a kid but... an older kid?

something is different and Roy can't place it

Ed is something else

he's high energy and high skill and hell if he doesn't talk to Roy like an equal despite the power imbalance between them

and sometimes he looks at Roy and Roy can see in his eyes that he's just as aged as he and the rest of the soldiers are

Roy knows why, too

He worries about his interest, but he doesn't think too much about it because he's in a "relationship"

and then

Hughes dies

Roy is Distraught

Everyone who knew about him n Hughes did what they could to console him

He doesn't tell Ed, to protect him

So Ed blows up at him the next time he sees Roy, bc Hughes was like family to him

Ed knew about their relationship, of course, with all the time he spent nearby

But that didn't mean he wasn't angry, or that he would placate Roy instead

and Roy is so surprised that someone isn't tiptoing around the subject he isn't really listening

Ed picks up on this and is just like "are you even listening to me"

and Roy just says "you're something else"

and Ed blushes bc he Definitely Does Not Have A Crush and that definitely doesn't sound like interest

and Roy files that away bc he's realized his own interest in Ed, it's interesting to see it's reciprocated

He explains that "nobody has talked to me frankly since the funeral because we were a thing"

and Ed's like "I mean sure but you're still an asshole for not telling me I mean we were literally here when it happened" but much less angry now

and Roy accepts that because he already knew Ed was right

and he just

gives Ed that fond look

and Ed notices

decides to lighten the mood

"a picture would last longer"

and Roy is like

o fuck Im being blatant

"what do you mean"

and Ed laughs at that

because this isn't the first time he's noticed

"oh come on colonel, we both know about it"

and this time Roy blushes because Ed's right

"it's not a good time, fullmetal"

and Ed considers that

on one hand, Roy is right. He's 16, they're mourning, Roy is his boss (technically), and lots of other things that say "don't"

on the other hand

"maybe you should let out some steam?"

and Roy wants to be mad

but he isnt

he's interested

and he just stares at Ed

and Ed waits

and Roy just

sighs

because he wants it now

moreso than before Ed said anything

"what did you have in mind"

and Ed stands up

walks behind Roy's desk

and sits down, on the desk

and they slowly reach for each other

they both know this is too soon for them, but they want it anyway

Ed tells Roy to close his eyes

"imagine whoever you need"

kisses him firmly

Roy opens his eyes and tells Ed "it's you"

Ed is shaking bc regardless of how much he wants this, knows he's ready, it's still his first time

and Roy asks if he's okay

if he's sure

and Ed reassures him

"I want this"

"I want you"

and that's enough

it's slow and desperate

Roy cries a little, Ed holds him as he does

they finish and look at each other like "so what do we do now"

and I haven't thought past that!

How large does the age gap have to be to make it uncomfortable?

This depends entirely on the relative ages involved, since I have two muses on here that are both over 2000 years old and at that point worrying about age gaps is really kinda pointless. That being said, I will not ship anything beyond purely romantic with muses below the age of 18 as a general rule, and that only because I have two muses with minor-aged verses [Dick and Conrad].

Are you selective when shipping?

To an extent; I ship chemistry above all, so there's no guarantee that - as an example - my Bucky is gonna be solidly romantically attracted to any given portrayal of Steve, or that I the writer am gonna click with the writer of any given Steve out there. Chemistry does not just mean chemistry of the characters; if our styles clash or we don't really mesh well then shipping's probably not gonna happen.

How far do steamy moments have to go before they’re considered NSFW?

I tend to be very lenient here, but in general once the bits below the belt start getting named and/or there is full nudity I start tagging. Unless my partner starts tagging and/or readmore-ing first, in which case I follow my partner's lead and do the same.

100% I have only ever considered limiting ships once and that was because the character involved had just been so built around his ship partner that playing him off anyone else was just weird. That is the exception to the rule here.

What is your favorite ship in your current fandom?

Uh. -looks at current DC obsession- do I have to just pick one? Probably Jaydick, but in all its permutations. It scratches that delightful Stucky itch of 'can be just very deeply platonic but also so goddamn romantic under the right circumstances' and I kinda love it. But also I've a softspot for Batcat when they're written right.

I think he will if asked, 'cause his gloves are absolutely a big fetish point for people where Roy is concerned, but I don't think he really likes it all that much.

I imagine the ignition fabric of his gloves would feel a little like jerking it with fine-grit sandpaper, so while I'm sure he'd do it if Hughes, Ed, or Hawkeye asked him to, I don't think it would feel particularly good lol

Maes Hughes

Most of this comes down to: Hughes dies waaaaay too early! I get that he was just too smart; he figured out the country-wide transmutation circle eons before anybody else did. But he was so much fun, that perfect blend of wacky silliness and serious smarts that makes you fall instantly in love with him. It would have been great if he had somehow managed to survive, maybe locked up like Marcoh, and came back during the Promised Day or something. But I guess that's what fanfiction is for.

Hughes without his family and friends is...what even is he? So yeah, he needs to be interacting with people, whether that's his family, Mustang and his team, the Elric brothers, whoever! He's perfect for both funny moments and serious ones. As for ships, I circled that specifically for HyuRoi. I'm pretty sure his most popular ship is with him and Gracia, which obviously is wholesome and wonderful. But HyuRoi is popular and prevalent enough to count, and it sucks like a high-powered vacuum cleaner. The man is married, hello!

P.S. I circled the "adoption papers" square, but not because I want to adopt him. He's adopting me.

What are your thoughts on other Roy & Ed ships, ie RoyAi, EdWin, Elricest, RoyAl, EdLing, HyuRoi, etc? Just curious if you’re a multi-shipper or if RoyEd is it for you 👻

I had to think about that for a bit- I think my love for RoyEd is so astronomical… it just eclipses everything else! They’re just the best. BUT I have written Elricest fanfiction before, and I think that’s my second favorite pairing. I like the angsty, darker side of that relationship, I guess? And how bittersweet it can also be. I also like HeiEd for those same reasons. In Roy’s case, I’ve been finding RoyWin interesting lately? I also like RoyAl, RoyHavoc(?), HyuRoi… the list goes on…

I think the moral of the story is that I love RoyEd. I ship Ed with pain. And I ship Roy with just about everyone (though to a lesser extent than I do with Ed).
