143: Shrimp Boat // Duende
Tumblr media
Duende Shrimp Boat 1992, Bar/None
Though today pretty well unknown outside Chicagoland’s plaid belt, in their day Shrimp Boat were a vital part of the root system that would produce seminal post-rock (Tortoise), weirdo Americana (Wilco, Califone), and whatever you want to call the Sea and Cake. (Trouser Press offers, as usual, a useful overview.) In retrospect, Duende sounds quite modest compared to the landmarks this scene would produce over the next few years, but their shambling, improvisational-sounding takes on various flavours of ethnic folk music offer both simple, tuneful pleasures and musicological interest for those tuned into the way the players find each other in space. Singer Sam Prekop (later of the Sea and Cake) sings in a post-Violent Femmes/Meat Puppets indie guy whine, and if none of the free-associative lyrics are particularly memorable (save for peanut butter-on-the-brain rhymes like “Van Buren” with “urine”) his sloshing cadences nicely match the band’s unpredictable lurching and weaving. You almost certainly lose something only being able to hear them; live, the members of the band would frequently switch instruments, and the thrill of hearing them successfully mash up an Appalachian-sounding banjo melody with jazzy sax would be enhanced quite a bit by watching the encounter seem to develop organically before your eyes in some smoky loft. Still, Duende is a breezy, well-textured listen that rewards your focus, even as it affably wanders.

It was worth the mile plus hike up the beach from the closest public access to shoot the "Capt. Chris" shrimp boat. It has been ground since June at South Ponte Vedra Beach. Thought I should finally get up there before a hurricane moves it or destroys it.  [Steve Brooks]

"It's late in the day. It's not morning; it's not noon. It doesn't seem to be just early afternoon. I’m looking at a setting sun. And all of the things inside of me: I would hate to die with them inside of me. I'd like to get them down. I’ve got to get this stuff finished before the parade passes by."-
