Fifth Review - Let’s Talk About DigiXroses
Been in a Digimon mood for a while, and I’ve spent part of that mood designing a few of my own Digimon. As I was planning and sketching things, I ended up coming back to Xros Wars (as I oft seem to do >_>). When it comes to fan created Digimon, I’d say 90% are based on Adventure (Child-to-Ultimate), with another 9% from 02 (Armors or Jogress) or Tamers (Bio-Merges). Very few OrigiDigi use the Spirit, Burst, or Xros mechanics, and the few times I have seen DigiXroses have been XrosUps (the blended forms seen in Boy Hunters).
However, the iconic DigiXroses are not XrosUps, but Xroses that utilize every element of the fusing Digimon in a very toyetic way, like a Megazord (maybe why I like them so much). I can count the number of times I’ve seen an OrigiDigi of this type attempted on one hand, and never more than a X2, which is where the above designs come into play.
I like Digimon, I like toys, and I like creature design, so I challenged myself to try designing a complete Xros of 3 or higher. As Shoutmon is loosely based on Omegamon, I used Dukemon as a rough base, then tried creating a new combination scheme. It was quite a long process, taking a few months of mental planning, and a few days of sketching.
I was so happy with this first attempt, that I ended up commissioning artist @/EL_POYOMON to render them in the traditional Digimon style (who you should go check out; they’re really cool and very nice).
Going through everyone in order, I wanted a small, Child-level-esque Digimon, similar to Shoutmon, which is where Partymon comes in. I mostly tried replicating Shoutmon’s general physique, with the head and dreads specifically being designed so they would form 1) a head piece similar to Dukemon’s, part of the reason he has non-standard eyes, and 2) the fingers for the right arm he would eventually form.
Since Shoutmon X5, MetalGreymon, and DarkKnightmon are all comprised of male Digimon, I specifically wanted a Digimon that was obviously female, hence Ladysmon. Her transformation scheme was probably the hardest, where I knew I wanted her to split down the middle, but it took me a while to figure out what to do with her arms. I also didn’t come up with the ladybug motif until I started planning names. I think my original plan for her was an angel? But I didn’t know what to do with her wings. Once I settled on ladybug, incorporating her wings into a Dukemon-esque shield became easy, and everything flowed after that.
The last of our trio is Comicmon. I settled on the dragon motif pretty early, as, like Ladysmon, Dragons are a pretty common Digimon staple that weren’t utilized in any of the canon Xroses. This design was probably the easiest to get to transform, and I’m pretty sure he has a drill because I needed something that looked like a lance, and drills are cool (and make great tails). Once I settled on a name, the POW using the eye as an O, and the comic-sound-effect-esque mane on the head and tail came quickly after.
There isn’t much to say about PartyKnightmon, since he’s a combination of all the above elements, so let’s talk about names. I don’t remember when I settled on “Partymon” as a name, but it existed long before any of the others had one. I was originally going to call their combined form “Partymon X3,” since Shoutmon is the only Digimon that uses that name scheme, and I wanted a second one, but as I was trying to come up with names for everyone else, the name PartyKnightmon popped into my head, and the names Ladysmon and Comicmon came soon after as they all had a common theme:
Party Night, Lady’s Night, Comic Night; PartyKnightmon, LadysKnightmon, ComicKnightmon. A unique name scheme that worked for possible X2s.
Maybe this is a little big headed of me, but one of my hopes in commissioning these guys was to inspire other people to try the idea. Compared to a usual Digimon line, DigiXroses are quite complicated when it comes to the toyetic design aspects, but it’s really a fun challenge. I’d love to see more artists with different design philosophies give it a shot.
And just because I cranked one out doesn’t mean I’m done with DigiXroses just yet. While these were being worked on, I started ironing out several more projects, including some evolutions related to these designs, a new X4 with intermediary Xroses, and a new evolution for the existing Greymon design. I don’t know if I’ll commission them all (because, remember, that costs money), but I will eventually post them "elsewhere” if you’re curious (@/EPY_RM).
Overall, this was a fun little self-challenge, which sent me down quite the design rabbit hole. I’d like it if at least one other person got a little inspiration from seeing these designs, as I really do want to see other people’s takes, so if you draw anything Xros Wars related, let me know! :)
And, again, check out Poyo. I couldn’t have done this without them.

Digimon Xros Wars Ep44 Liveblog
Now that Kiriha has received some character development and embraced his ability to love, him, Taiki, and Nene have gained the ability to use Great Xros and increase Shoutmon to X7! Unfortunately, this is not enough to one-shot Gravimon.
and straight into the fray!
i forgot about all of this Great Xros stuff. it’s pretty cool & i like how it fully establishes the three of them as a close-knit trio
this is nice. I’m glad Kiriha gets a little bit to feel emotions about Deckerdramon’s death
oh no oh god i forgot about this until now. this episode has some weird parasite-growth shit in it... anyways Taiki has like. a bit of Gravimon wedged in his arm and it’ll grow into him or something and it’s mildly upsetting. like the thing with plotlines like this is that they’re pretty fascinating in their own right (there’s a guy inside you and it could kills you wyd) but also (like i said) mildly unpleasant to watch
so Gravimon can regrow from anything (in this case, a wire), not his core, but his core needs to be intact to be able to regenerate. which is why he stuck it in Taiki, since it would either mean that his core would never get destroyed or the others would be forced to kill Taiki to destroy him (iirc that’s this episode’s main conflict)
is Taiki misquoting a saying just a mistake on his part, or is it supposed to indicate that the core in his arm is affecting him?
from here on out, Kiriha starts acting a lot more relaxed, & it is really gratifying to see him change so much. it’s like a weight was literally taken off his shoulders after he realized his mistakes and was able to embrace his love, from the way he stands to how he interacts with the group (like Shoutmon said, he’s even smiling and laughing now)
ohhh I see, it’s a decoy X7 made up of seven completely different Digimon! that’s clever!
Nene’s disguise this time is hilarious because she wore it literally just to talk to the guard and then have Mervamon kick the guard in the face.
so since they found out he could regenerate, Gravimon’s not even being slick about it this time... but he’s not showing his whole hand, either, since he still hasn’t told Taiki about the core
aaaaa that's cute how she holds Hi-VisionMonitamon's hands
Kiriha still acts like his normal self while in combat, though. so, he's probably started to understand that there's a time and place for everything -- sometimes you can relax with your friends, and sometimes you can be a brutal fighter.
this is a really good way to represent how X7 was made up of everyone's bonds (and everyone's Digimon) -- before, Taiki was riding on X7's shoulder before hopping off, and now that Kiriha is giving X7 orders he's the one riding on X7's shoulders. they did something similar a while back when X5 (i think? it's the one with Sparrowmon) first formed and both Taiki and Nene stood on X5's shoulders since X5's formation was also indicative of their budding friendship. like, swapping around who's the one giving orders (who X7 has to trust with their life) is very significant in a battle.
man Gravimon really wants to force Taiki's friends into killing him. i think he has a problem.
hmm yeah that's just as disturbing as i remember. i don't like how it does a heartbeat thing.
so now Gravimon is putting Kiriha's character development to the test by trying to goad him into killing Taiki again
"rip it out" dude it's inside his arm do you know how much that would hurt???
well Kiriha contemplated it for a bit but then remember that Taiki has continued to trust and been nice to him him despite his betrayal, so he is not going to kill him. that's good.
so Kiriha is going to surrender by giving up his Xros Loader… leaving himself completely defenseless
or not? i guess Gravimon thinks that's too easy?
and then he was going to kill Kiriha but then Taiki jumped in the way?? he's going to try and take out Gravimon with him???
so then Gravimon had his core leave Taiki and Mervamon grabbed him and Kiriha so they're fine now
and X7 shot down the core so everything is fine now and they’re moving on to the next (and final) kingdom

Digimon Xros Figures Sparrowmon / Shoutmon X5
Finally completed the entire Xros Heart team. After handling all of them, I really like the engineering, and it has made me appreciate their designs even more. Sadly, and I know I harp on this every time I do a Xros Figure, but this is still the best version of said design and engineering. I just wish they’d take a second crack at it with modern advancements, especially with all the recent model kits they’ve done. Will add that this is the biggest combo the toys get, as they never released OmegaShoutmon or ZekeGreymon. Hopefully, someday, this will be rectified, but until then we’ll have to settle.
The Good and Bad: Sparrowmon’s kind of a brick. It has shoulders, and that’s it, but it is also meant to mainly be a component piece for Shoutmon Jet Sparrow and Shoumon X5 / X5B. It does a pretty effective job of that, looking decent in both modes, and I do like how much its wings extend, even if they aren’t always visible past all of Shoutmon’s bulk.
The Details: Like the other figures in this line, I did customize this one quite a bit to make it more screen accurate. I repainted its eyes to look more anime-esque, as well as the arms white as that’s their color in the show/official art. I added some silver under the wings to try and replicate the speakers seen there on Shoutmon Jet Sparrow, and panel lined the top to bring out the details there. I also added a lot of black to the tail area to try and match some of the official images I found.
Last thing I did was repaint the new helmet. I had a lot of problems with the X4 helmet, but it ended up being a lot easier the second time. I added some black underneath the eyes, and dotted the eyes black, then white.
Overall, definitely glad I got this one last. It’s not bad, but it’s meant to function as an upgrade to another collection of toys rather than be good standalone like Beelzebumon was. However, grabbing this one has convinced me it might not be a bad idea to track down the few I was on the fence about, like Cyberdramon, Deckerdramon, and Tsuwamon. Hopefully I’ll be able to find them all sooner than later.
