BandGang Lonnie Bands x ShredGang Mone — Shottas (TF Distribution)
Detroit’s duo of badasses BandGang Lonnie Bands and ShredGang Mone continue their collaborative work in a 16-minute EP. Shottas will hardly bring new fans to the table but shows how these two artists’ careers differ. Formally, Lonnie Bands and Mone are a unit, but the tape says different.
Shottas is a loose continuation of their 2018’s EP Rastas, a timestamp of how things changed during the four years since the first EP. On Rastas, both Lonnie and Mone used more clean flow and employed classic verse-chorus structure. And while thematically Rastas is only marginally different than Shottas (on one of the tracks Lonnie use “shottas” and “rastas” as synonyms) the 2018 tape, compared to the new one, sounds like it was written by two college boys trying on street thug masks. In fact, Rastas is so polished, unenigmatic and even respectable, it could be played in church (if the pastor left the building). In contrast, Shottas is a mature work of the same college boys who have, by now, been mugged by reality and enmeshed more deeply in street life. Lonnie in “Old Heads” sums up perfectly his path between 2018 and 2022: “I used to sell a bitch mouth, now it's all drug deals \ Got a million-dollar house, still posted where the thugs is.”
What marks this stellar difference between the two artists now and four years ago is not real life events (Lonnie Bands shot in the head, parts of the bullet still inside him, and got a murder case against him dropped) but the change in Lonnie’s artistic style. Gone are his clean delivery, playing by rules and the use of more upbeat production. Since 2021 Lonnie has had a mad run of mean — even nasty — records where he raps like he has dirt in his mouth, a rapid dog on the loose. Despite his dislike of rappers (he claims only streets raised him), he still pays tribute to artists he admires, like on “Greatest Bome Back”: “You ain't gotta keep your ho in line, ho, when you mack like Goldie \ Concrete ya 'cross the state lines, I got that shit from Boldy.” He flips rhymes relentlessly but would prefer bullets: “the K bullets flip out like they doin' cartwheels \ They mad I ain't get tricked out, man, I'm really hard to kill.”
Mone, on the other hand, is stuck in 2018. His style remains untouched, his persona a bit dusty now. He was always a bully with a gun who made clumsy rhymes. On Shottas he remains in the background, playing a sidekick, with the only shining moment on “3 Kids” where he delivers a nice verse, claiming he is a danger to rappers whom he will rob if they are around. Otherwise, Mone hardly moved forward since 2018.
Shottas is not only a punchy EP but also a testament to an artist’s ability to reinvent himself as many times as need to stay on top.
