anakin was not born with the teeth of a star-eater, ferrous-black and always dripping blood. his halo did not used to shine so brightly that it hurt his master's eyes, his skin did not always shift and ripple like the surface of a newly-forming planet as the magma churns beneath. his eyes used to be soft and blue and human. he did not grow into his own radiance like it was an oversized sweater, nor did it grow from within him, transforming him gradually from within; his greatness was thrust upon him by a creature who whispered dark promises with the voices of a thousand evil men. he does not want it, this power, and it does not want him.
he is glad his mother has never known him like this. in the depths of his spiralling despair he finds himself almost glad she died, so that she remembers him as human and not... this. supernova child, borne of the cosmos. sky-walker. he is not the son of the stars, he is the son of shmi - wide-eyed boy, sunburnt cheeks, shock blonde hair. the galaxy will not remember him that way.
they will know him as monstrous. she knew him as kind.

Anakin: Oh, sorry master, I didn't mean to interrupt your date.
Obi-Wan: This is not a date.
Satine: It’s not? Why did I pay then? Am I not getting any or ?
Anakin: *laughs*
Obi-Wan: So how’s your mother Anakin?
Anakin: I don’t know how’s Qui-Gon?
Satine: The two of you really need to learn to calm your dramatic selves the fuck down force-

Angstpril Day 2
Frozen
Spoiler: This is an excerpt from Children of the Desert
Anakin takes Owen’s speeder to the Tusken camp. He’s good enough at stealth that slipping inside unnoticed is easy. He cuts his way through the back of the dimly tent with his lightsaber.
The only one inside is his mom, and Anakin freezes with gutted horror when he sees her. He knew she;d been hurt, that the Tuskens would have hurt her. It’s a miracle she’s still alive, but she’s hurt.
They’ve beaten her – he can see the blood on her face, and there’s blood patches on her clothes in many places. Anakin has seen his mother hurt before, more times than he can count, but it’s never been like this. He’s never seen her so still and motionless, barely clinging to life.
She’s dying.
He doesn’t have to be able to feel it, to see it from just looking at her. He doesn’t know how much blood she’s lost or how many internal injuries she might have, or – or anything.
He can’t have come this far only for her to die. Anakin scrambles to her side, heart pounding with desperation and horror at the sight of her like this, untying her from the thing where the Tuskens left her. She practically collapses into his arms as he lowers her to the floor. Obviously he’s never held her before, but there’s no way she should be this light.
“Mom,” Anakin breathes, shaking her shoulder. Her presence is still in the Force, though it’s slowly flickering back to consciousness. “Mom?”
“Ani?” she asks faintly, slowly opening her eyes. She hardly seems aware that he’s here, much less that he’s real. “Ani? Is it you?”
“I’m here, Mom,” Anakin promises, holding her close, “You’re safe.” Her presence brightens a little in the Force, and he sees the realization slowly dawning in her eyes. She shifts, slowly reaching up to touch his face. It’s so light and gentle and so her, and he missed her, so much he wants to cry. “Ani?” she asks again, “Oh, you look so handsome. My son.” He leans into her touch, pressing a kiss to her palm. “My grown-up son. I’m so proud of you, Ani.”

ok, Owen and Beru didn’t really know Anakin and Padmé very well, but you know who they did know? Shmi Skywalker. Luke likely grew up with stories about his grandmother: how kind she was, the adversity she overcame.

Padme Amidalla had gone to Rapture, the idea of helping build a utopian society was to tempting to ignore. She discussed going to Rapture with Anakin. He pouted but gave his blessing to his beloved wife. Padme promised she would be back soon. Saying it would only be a few months and then she would send for them. Padme would build a perfect society for her beloved children. She smiled and waved goodbye at that lighthouse to her crying husband and children.
That was three years ago, progress in Rapture moved very slow. Social reforms, red tape and just helping regular people was difficult. She wouldn’t bring her family to Rapture, not like this. Rapture wasn’t a welcoming place for families, much less children. Padme rubbed her temple with a sigh. She missed them, Luke and Leia. They would be eight now, she longed to see them. Padme bounced slightly as the elevator stopped. Hardly looking up from her book, a man walked in.
Much to Padme’s surprise, people gave the young man in a stripped suit a wide brith. Like he had a sickness or something. He was holding a needle like the horrible little sisters had. Padme tilted her head, why was this man familiar? Shmi leaned over and whispered into Padme’s ear.
“On of the newest developments from Fontaine Futuristics in big daddy technology.” Shmi whispered to her lover. “They call them ‘little papas.’ A coparent to the big daddy.” She gave a shiver. “The whole Adam research creeps me out, adding the big daddy’s makes it worse for me.” Shmi looked away from the young man.
“A little papa. Leave it to Rapture to bastardize all of childhood.” Padme got a look of the man’s face. Why did she recognize him?! A memory came to mind of the same young man in a sweater and glasses helping her children into their backpacks at that prestigious preschool. “Shmi I know him…but how-“ the elevator bounced again and opened to the Arcadia. “Obi-wan kenobi, my children’s preschool teacher.” Padme mumbled under her breath fallowing after him.
“Wait! Padme!” Shmi hissed running after Padme into Arcadia.
Padme fallowed Obi-wan, watching him approach a vent. “Mr. Kenobi! Ben!” She cried out watching as Obi-wan stop what he was doing to look back at the women curiously.
“Hello citizen, how may I assist you?” That accent, it really had to be Ben. “Please keep back, I am about to escort my little children to their Big Daddy. Big Daddy Vader is waiting for us.” His hair was different, went to about his chin. Face clean shaven, that stripped suit even looked tailored onto his body but it was Ben.
“Ben? What are you doing here? You don’t recognize me? Come now, you were a preschool teacher for my children at sunny side. You know Luke and Leia? I’m Padme Amadalla-Skywalker.” She reintroduced to the man with gold glowing eyes holding a horrifying needle.
“Please do not stop me from my work. Have a wonderful day under the sea.” Obi-wan turned back to the vent and knocked.
“Skywalker?” Shmi hissed ignoring the Little Papa now and looking to Padme. “I thought you left him!” She stopped at the sound of knocking. Even the soft knocking of the vent echoed horribly in rapture. “Shit Padme we must go. Before the little-“
It was too late. The giggle of a little girl echoed through the room, then another one but from a little boy.
“Hurry up Luke.” The little girl pulled out of the vent first eyes glowing gold as a little sister’s should.
“Don’t be bossy Leia! I’m stuck behind you!” The little boy crawled out beside her but smiled at Obi-wan. “Hi papa! I’ve missed you.” Luke greeted earning a kiss from Obi-wan.
“Papa! I wanna kiss too!” Leia started to whine but giggled when she got a kiss. “Ohhh we are in Arcadia! I love flowers.” She grinned as Obi-wan helped the twins down.
“Is daddy here?!” Luke looked around holding his own needle while holding Leia’s hand.
“Be kind to each other starlights.” Obi-wan chuckled. “We mustn’t fight.” He cooed before nodding. “Yes, Daddy will be here soon. Any moment now.” Obi-wan fixed Leia’s hair and then took out a handkerchief to clean Luke’s face.

shmi skywalker adhered to the jedi code more than anakin ever did
okay that's a very clickbaity title but i was rewatching the phantom menace and i found it so interesting that shmi actually demonstrated non-attachment and adhered to the jedi code with regards to anakin two different times during her brief screentime! i think it's important to emphasize this because shmi was anakin's only parent and primary influence during the early stages of his life. anakin's tendency towards attachment is not a result of shmi's parenting- it's despite it. so let's go through it!
the first instance of shmi's non-attachment occurs when she is presented with the notion of anakin racing on boonta eve in order to help qui-gon and padme. she explicitly says she thinks the racing is "awful" and tells anakin, "i don't want you to race." but she sets her own feelings aside- she lets go of her fear about anakin and prioritizes the greater good. the greater good, in this case, is padme and qui-gon's mission, and its implications for naboo.
shmi recognizes that her fear is not more important than an entire planet: "i may not like it, but he can help you... he was meant to help you," she says. there are also implications that she is listening to the will of the force here, and that she understands this is what anakin was meant to do.
the second instance of her non-attachment occurs when anakin is freed and she is not. she is the one who requests that qui-gon take anakin with him to coruscant to become a jedi. though she is clearly sad to part ways with him, lamenting to qui-gon that "he was in my life for such a short time," she still encourages anakin to go.
here, shmi recognizes that her desire to keep anakin near her is not more important than what is best for anakin. i've written a post here about the fact that shmi struggles to understand anakin's unique status with regards to the force, and that she turns to qui-gon and the jedi for help. shmi knows the jedi can help anakin grow this special part of him that she "can't explain" herself. she also knows that doing this will make anakin happy: she tells anakin that going with qui-gon is a chance to "make your dreams come true."
and she even drops a little nugget of wisdom, straight out of the jedi code, onto anakin. wisdom that anakin will later reject from the mouths of people like obi-wan and yoda, even though it is the exact same thing shmi believes, the exact same thing shmi is shown to have taught him. "you can't stop change, any more than you can stop the suns from setting," she tells anakin. "it is time for you to let go... to let go of me."
it's not a coincidence that shmi's screen time in the phantom menace is exclusively spent adhering to the jedi tenets of love without attachment. shmi is human, and she feels love just as anyone else. she feels scared when anakin is in danger, and she feels sad at the idea of not having him near. but she does not allow this to take precedent over the greater good, whether that is for the planet of naboo or for anakin himself.
that is non-attachment. it is letting go of someone- not because you don't love them, but because you do. and shmi skywalker is the very embodiment of it. when anakin rejects obi-wan's advice about letting go, when he refuses yoda's advice that death is inevitable, he is not just rejecting the jedi's philosophies. he is rejecting shmi's values as well. the further he sinks into attachment, the further he is forsaking his own mother's memory. that's the tragedy.

Shoutout to the waiter with a vaguely Norwegian accent who had clearly just started working at the mexican restaurant we were at in very rural Michigan who confidently corrected my friend's pronunciation of "pollo" (chicken, she pronounced correctly as poy-yo) as "polo" and honorary shoutout to my friend who dutifully apologized and copied his incorrect pronunciation

Shmi v. Palpatine: Who Would Win?
Imagine that Padme finds out that the Jedi did not free Shmi. Imagine this happened around when Anakin was about 13 or so. Perhaps he finds out he can write Amidala a letter or something.
So Anakin says, hey, I've saved some money from podracing, but need someone to use it to free my mom because the Jedi won't do it. Could you send someone to do that maybe, please? And Padme is shocked and horrified and immediately takes care of it all herself using her own money.
Now Shmi is free and with Padme's help is settled into a place on Coruscant where Anakin can sneak away to see her. Naturally, she wants to be with her son. This is wonderful for Anakin's mental health.
HOWEVER, Anakin will naturally tell Palpatine. Can't imagine why he wouldn't.
And Palatine is the consummate abuser. This means he needs to isolate Anakin.
How does he do this, do you think? Does he insinuate that Anakin as a product of rape was unwanted? That maybe Shmi sees or saw him as a burden or is ashamed of him? Maybe she's angry at him? He's certainly going to do whatever he can to place emotional wedges there.
But what if planting those seeds doesn't work? And I think it's possible that it wouldn't, at least not long-term. Does Palpatine arrange for Shmi to be murdered? Would not put it past him.
It would be wonderful if Shmi could realise what a horrible person Palpatine is and keep her son away from him. And it's not beyond the realm of possibility. Shmi would probably note that Padme immediately freed her when Anakin wrote her, but Palpatine didn't do jack.
Of course, abusers do try to ingratiate themselves with the community, and Palpatine might have made a point of meeting Shmi and thanking her for her wonderful son etc., and tried to charm her, but I think given the above Shmi might see past that.
It might be a bit of an uphill battle for her to convince Anakin though. Anakin's had several years with Palpatine now thinking he's the only one who truly understands/cares. Internalizing that nothing's ever Palpatine's fault; he's the victim with good intentions if only the Republic wasn't so mean to him. Would be nice if Shmi got through to Anakin though. Given time and support, she could probably do it...But would Palpatine let her? Doubtful. There are so many ways to arrange an accident...
So I am putting this out there: Does Shmi being in Anakin's life after several years of Palpatine's grooming help him? If so, how much? Does Palpatine wedge them apart? Or, does Palpatine just outright murder Shmi to get rid of her?
