Yuri Quarantine Reading List
In times like these, when we are all doing our best to stay home, social distance, and protect our loved ones from COVID-19, we need a little bit of entertainment to get us through some of the longer days isolated in a room. Absorbing yourself in another world through books, games, and media is a solace for many of us during the pandemic. With that in mind, I reached out to anyone and everyone I could think of, from friends and colleagues to publishers and creators to ask, “what lesbian manga or anime is on your quarantine list” and they ran with it!

part twenty-seven to this
They each inspect the mess of down and wood in different kinds of silence: contemplative, mournful, and--in Hiei’s case--bored.
Hatori picks up a pillow. It’s one of the few items that remains relatively intact. “Are you certain?”
Kuwabara’s almost too choked up to speak. “Yeah.” He points to a splintered piece of foot board and says, “That’s where my cat digs her claws when she wants breakfast.” He wraps the comforter he got from Shizuru last winter around his shoulders. “It’s definitely my bed.”
His bed, which lies in shambles on the floor of a dimension that is not his bedroom.
Kuwabara doesn’t bother looking to Hiei for sympathy. Hard won experience tells him none will be forthcoming.
Hatori squeezes the pillow. It is remarkably plush for the trauma Kuwabara has just emotionally endured. “I find it hard to believe that this is a coincidence.” So does Kuwabara. “Portals can open anywhere at any time on earth, yet your bed has been transported only after your second night here.”
“I don’t think the portals are as random as we thought they were. Before I went to sleep last night, I was thinking about how nice it would be to sleep in my own bed instead of the hammock.” Although the hammock is not quite so terrible when you’re sleeping next to someone you trust to keep you alive if you don’t piss him off too badly.
Hatori glances at Hiei. “Oh?”
Kuwabara isn’t that transparent, is he? “Has that ever happened to you before? You wished for something and suddenly it was there?”
“My wishes are not usually so...material.”
He doesn’t eat or sleep, and his clothes are at least two centuries out of fashion, so maybe Kuwabara should have expected that. “Don’t you ever look at a magazine or read a book and get curious? You see a toy and wonder what the appeal is? Or a car or a--” Kuwabara pauses. “Or a hundred and fifty something foot long frigate.”
“We have a book on shipwrecks in the library,” Hatori admits. “I was fascinated by it, but not to the point of desiring to see such a ship in person.”
“But it’s not just you that lives here.” The Violet Queen is fascinated by humans. “She’s a goddess. Maybe when she wishes for something it’s supercharged.” A frigate instead of a dinghy, an orchestra’s worth of musical instruments instead one trombone.
“True, but there were things here when we arrived,” Hatori says. “Caverns already filled to the brim with objects you wouldn’t expect to find in a cave.”
“Someone could have lived here before you, or this place could have random portals opening alongside portals that people can influence.” Kuwabara isnt a physicist. He has no idea how feasible his hypotheses are. “Either way, it doesn’t change the fact that my bed is a heaping pile of rubble.” May it rest in peace.
“It’s simple enough to confirm your suspicions. Why don’t you wish for something from earth right now? We’ll see if this place truly grants ‘wishes’ across dimensions.”
Hiei can never know how searingly hot Kuwabara’s scientist side finds it when he proposes an experiment. Never. “Not a bad idea, shrimp.”
For that, Kuwabara’s comforter is confiscated and balled into a pillow for Hiei to nap on. Fair enough.
He hasn’t eaten breakfast yet. Kuwabara smiles, thinking of his dream.
The plate falls pancake first onto the floor.
He can smell the butter and the syrup. The throes of grief consume Kuwabara for the second time since he woke up an hour ago.
Hatori doesn’t quite manage to hide a laugh. “Try again.”
They both have their hands out to catch the pancakes this time.
Hatori hands over the pancakes with an exaggerated bow. “I am redeemed.”
Instead of a ceramic plate, the pancakes are stacked on a yellow Styrofoam tray. “I just ruined breakfast for two separate people on earth.” Kuwabara rolls up a pancake and starts eating it anyway. He offers the others to Hatori and Hiei.
Hatori picks one up. His face blossoms into bliss at the first bite.
“Pretty fucking good, am I right?” Of course he is. These are pancakes he’s talking about.
Hiei takes two. The sight of him eating a pancake makes Kuwabara’s heart soar. “You like it? My grandma had the best recipe. We always keep some batter on hand at my house. I’ll make you some, if you want.” Kuwabara’s got bird facts and make ahead pancake mix. There’s marriage material in there somewhere.
Hiei's a fast eater. “And I suppose Yukina will coincidentally be there when I take you up on your offer.”
When, he says. Not if. That’s as good as a promise coming from Hiei. “She lived with us for awhile, you know. She considers our house another home.” If Kuwabara suggests she come over for pancakes while Hiei is there, he doesn’t personally see a problem.
Hiei burrows deeper into Kuwabara’s comforter. “You’re quite meddlesome.”
“You can invite Mukuro.” He’s dreamed about it for awhile now: everyone at his house so he can make them his favorite food--it seems like it just might be possible, when for so long Kuwabara’s been girding himself for the next goodbye. “Hatori, you have to come, too! Does your lady eat?”
“She can, if she chooses. The real question, however, is why should we go through the effort? I can apparently get pancakes anytime I want.” He smiles good naturedly at Kuwabara’s outrage. His grandma’s pancakes are the fucking best.
Hiei grunts in annoyance. “Are you inviting everyone in four dimensions to this get together?”
Yes, if that’s how far all of his loved ones go.
Speaking of. “Hey, were you thinking of Hiruseki stones earlier?”
Hiei snatches the tray out of Kuwabara’s hands. There’s one pancake left. “Yes.”
“Why?”
Pancakes do not require that much focus to be eaten. “I lost mine. I got the jagan so I could find it.”
That Hiruseki stone couldn’t be the one Hiei lost, could it? “But you pulverized the one that showed up.”
“It wasn’t mine. It’s been recovered.”
So, Hiei was thinking of Hiruseki stones in general? “I guess this place will summon whatever fits the bill if your wish isn’t specific enough.” He has so many questions. “Haven’t you wanted anything else since we’ve been here?”
Hiei stares and stares.
Kuwabara drops it. He’s pushed his luck enough as is.

What’s In A Name?
For some time, Kurama’s visitors would vary from Yusuke and Kuwabara to Yukina and occasionally Genkai when she could be bothered to leave her temple’s grounds. The few times that it was Botan, she was in the company of Shizuru, and Koenma was sparingly seen often sending Jorge as a proxy to ask Kurama a question. Hiei, however, had been a fixture in his living space ever since their meeting years ago. Even after the fire demon left to his duties in the Makai as a patroller, he would return and they would fall into a familiar rhythm.
Now though, it felt as if they’d been thrown into a new dance with a song that Kurama wasn’t accustomed to. Hiei composed it and the accompaniment was carried by the small child with dark eyes that captured both Kurama’s attention and his heart.
Kohaku was a lovely child, patient and easy, they slept throughout the night with ease and Hiei took to communicating with them via the Jagan to understand their needs. They acclimated to Kurama’s home quickly and enjoyed the attention of the youko’s house plants who were equally curious about the new arrival.
Hiei kept an eye on Kohaku as much as possible and it wasn’t unusual for Kurama to find him sitting in the middle of the living room, the table pushed to the couch, and his cloak laid down giving Kohaku ample space to practice crawling and sitting up. Hiei’s reactions were the most interesting. He was far more expressive when it was just the three of them.
The slight twitch in his eye when Kohaku began to topple over, the surge in his youki when Kohaku crawled forward shakily, a proud smile tugging at his lips when he glanced Kurama’s way, realizing that he was being watched then averting his gaze. He didn’t hide as much as he did before, the pride warming his voice when he lifted Kohaku to eye level and lavished them with praise. Their tiny hands pressed to Hiei’s cheeks and the Jagan glowing violet beneath Hiei’s bangs as they talked, laughed, and basked in one another’s presence.
Kurama enjoyed this. Watching the two of them at peace, comfortable, at home — even if it made him feel like an outsider looking in. Sure, Hiei trusted him with looking after Kohaku and left the child in his care more than once. And Kohaku lit up at the very sight of him and didn’t cry or balk when they were placed in Kurama’s arms which was more than he could hope for.
But though he was let in on Hiei’s plans to keep Kohaku, it was as his partner rather than anything else. And Kurama couldn’t help but feel that this domesticity, this tranquil happiness where they would be within his reach would be fleeting.
One day as Hiei finished preparing Kohaku’s bottle, he detailed what he’d accomplished thus far with legalizing Kohaku’s stay in the Ningenkai. The persona that he’d developed during Kurama’s junior high years, Kurosawa Tatsuo, was put into play and Kurama had to admit that he was impressed with the amount of work that Hiei put into maintaining the human guise. With all of his misgivings of humans, he was adept at mingling with them when he wanted to.
Important documents detailing Kohaku’s birth, his immunization records, and the like were laid out across the low table in the living room. Kohaku curled up in Hiei’s arms as the fire demon reclined against the couch, sitting on the floor and gazing out the window as he waited for Kurama to finish looking the pages over.
“You really gave some thought to this,” Kurama finally says, tucking the files back into the folder Hiei had brought to him.
Hiei seemed to brush off the compliment but there was a glimmer of pride in his eyes when he glanced Kurama’s way. “The persona of Kurosawa Tatsuo had to be used at some point, why not for this?”
At the word ‘this’, Hiei’s gaze flicked down to Kohaku holding the bottle in their hands and drinking away with fervor. Hushed whispers for Kohaku to slow down and take their time brought a smile to Kurama’s face. He smoothed his fingers over the name written in Hiei’s harsh handwriting across the front of the folder, humming thoughtfully.
“Kurosawa Kohaku,” Kurama reads, tapping his finger on the characters before glancing up at Hiei. “Don’t you always call him Haku?”
Hiei shrugs, pulling the bottle away and shifting Kohaku to rest their head against his shoulder as he patted their back. “Not always.” He glances down at the folder, eyebrow raised. “They recognize their name and know when I say it that I mean for them to listen.”
“Well, I am glad that you told me about this,” Kurama drummed his fingers against the folder before easing it back to Hiei’s side of the table.
Hiei tipped his head to one side, one brow quirked. “Why wouldn’t I?” He asks, crimson eyes boring holes into Kurama as if he could divulge all of his secrets simply from glaring at him.
And without a doubt, Kurama was sure that Hiei would try. Though this was something that Kurama couldn’t let him see. Whether out of fear of what he would think or what he would do, Kurama wasn’t sure. But there was something enchanting about seeing Hiei caring for Kohaku, his steely gaze softening at the child’s burp and his gaze flicked to Kohaku as he leant to one side to look at their face. Crimson eyes warm and kind as his lips brushed against Kohaku’s temple and the child squirmed in his arms, curling small fingers in the strap of Hiei’s tank top.
Kurama forced himself to look away when he realized he’d been staring for too long. He agreed to them staying here, yet how could he not? In moments like this, he was reminded that though he and Hiei were partners, but there was still a divide between them.
“I don’t expect to be privy to all your secrets, Hiei,” Kurama says once he finds the words, as far from what he was thinking as possible but close enough to be believable.
Hiei rests Kohaku in the crook of his arm, cleaning off the spittle on their lip with their bib.
“Haku’s not a secret,” he replies with a firmness to his tone that doesn’t allow Kurama a word in edge-wise. “He’s just as part of my life as you are.”
Any reply that Kurama could have drummed up died on his tongue and he felt sucked into the moment. Sitting across from Hiei at the table, watching him tend and clean his child’s face, the dull ache in his chest returned.
The same as it was every time the fire demon returned and all he wanted was to be at his side. Kurama’s limbs tensed and he willed his youki to remain steady as to not startle father or child as he slipped away from the table. Hiei lifted his head, glancing in his direction and following him with his eyes as he rounded to their side of the table, sliding down with his back to the couch to sit beside them.
Kohaku immediately glanced in his direction and Kurama couldn’t help but smile at those dark eyes taking him in. Small hands reaching out as Kohaku gave a squealing laugh, arching their back, opening and closing their hands to beckon Kurama closer. Giving Hiei a quick questioning look, the fire demon nodded without hesitation and Kurama leant over to tuck his hands under Kohaku’s armpits and lift him up.
Kohaku’s squealing laughter made Kurama smile so much that he almost forgot about Hiei’s imploring gaze boring into the side of his head. Lifting the child up, Kurama brought them closer and tapped his nose against Kohaku’s own, chuckling softly as Kohaku laughed and kicked their feet.
“Are you sure about this?” Hiei asks, drawing Kurama’s attention from Kohaku as he tucked the child in the crook  of his arm.
Kurama raises a brow, tilting his head slightly. “Helping you?” At Hiei’s nod, Kurama nods. “Of course.”
It never crossed his mind to oust either of them from his home. And though he was worried that this arrangement would be fleeting and Hiei would leave him permanently, these moments were memories he’d cherish. Regret was a different sort of beast when one lived for centuries and Kurama lived far too long to regret the moments that made him happiest. Kohaku’s dark eyes, their soft cooing and wide smiles would never fail to melt the icy guard around Kurama’s heart, drawing genuine smiles from him as he pressed his forehead to the child’s and rubbed their noses together.
“I’ve had nothing else to do but look after my family, work, and occasionally help you or the others,” Kurama explains, tickling Kohaku’s stomach to hear their laughter.
“So you’re bored?” Hiei says flatly, the accusation faint along with something that sounds akin to hurt.
Kurama shakes his head. “No, I’m comfortable,” he corrects gently, looking down at Kohaku with a small smile. “My mother has been wondering when I’ll settle down.”
“Have your own family, you mean?”
“Something to that extent.”
She never pushed the issue but he could see it in the way that she longingly watched the children accompanied by their parents or grandparents during their walks in the park. Or when she wandered to the aisle of children’s clothing on visits to department stores, asking him of what would be cute. It didn’t help that many of his co-workers were having families of their own while he remained unmarried and childless.
His mother never pressured him into anything but he could tell how much it would mean to her. Likely with the impression that it meant he would find lifelong companionship and happiness rather than the simple want of grandchildren.
Hiei’s voice cuts through his thoughts, quieter than before. “You’ve given it thought?”
It’s difficult to gauge his tone, whether he’s opposed to the idea or not, and Kurama tries to think of what to say as to not give away what he’s thinking. Not now at least. Finding the words to tell Hiei that this is more than he could hope for was beyond him.
“Once or twice,” he says, brushing his fingertips against Kohaku’s cheek, letting them hold them in their own.
“Then what’s keeping you?” Hiei asks, his hand resting on Kohaku’s head and the child arches back, looking at Hiei upside down with a wide smile.
Kurama glances from Kohaku to Hiei, the soft smile on the fire demon’s face making him seem much younger than what he was. Less guarded, more at peace. It was surreal to be sitting in his living room with a child in his arms and Hiei at his side, passing the time with talks of the future and enjoying this peaceful moment. Kohaku tugging at Kurama’s fingers while Hiei plays with the waves in Kohaku’s hair, momentarily distracted from his question enough for Kurama to admire him.
“What indeed…”

Rules: Answer the 20 questions, and tag 20 amazing followers that you’d like to get to know better.
Name: Talena
Nicknames: Tal, T, Bearly, Butts, Taleesi, Talaylay, and various others, there’s a long ass list
Zodiac sign: Leo-Virgo
Height: 5′9′’ me thinks, if I wasn’t so slouchy maybe even 5′10′’?
Orientation: Some sorta grey-ace/demisexual lesbian, identified as pan for many years, but over this last year been thinkin’ about it a lot and feel more comfortable labelling/identifying as a lesbian now
Ethnicity: One half Latina (Bolivian with some German in there oddly enough), the other half White (basically a mix of Danish and Scottish roots)
Favorite Fruit: Basically most berries (strawberries especially), I also really like bananas, pineapple, watermelon, and mangoes. <3
Favorite Season: Spring or Fall when it’s not too hot and not too cold.
Favorite Book Series: Probably the Harry Potter series. Was also a big fan of The Chronicles of Prydain and the Westmark trilogy growing up.
Favorite Flower: Forget-me-nots, lilies, violets, tulips, orchids. daffodils, and roses. I’m a big fan of most flowers tbh. They’re really pretty.
Favorite Scent: Forest smell after a summer rain, smell of clean laundry washed with lavender scented detergent, the smell of vanilla or something kinda flowery on a cute girl (lmao).
Favorite Color: Greens and blues, but also really like oranges and purple too.

part eleven to this
His spirit awareness has the decency to give him a five seconds’ heads up that Hatori is almost outside his door.
Kuwabara turns on the tap in the bathroom sink and shoves his head under the stream. Cold water has been his go to trick for hiding the fact that he’s been crying recently since he was a kid.
He looks in the mirror. His eyes look significantly less red and puffy than they did a moment ago.
He smiles bitterly at his reflection. Works like a charm.
Kuwabara runs a towel through his hair and performs his best parlor trick: he opens the door before Hatori lands the first knock.
Hatori’s smile almost makes up for his run in with Hiei. “Very impressive.”
Kuwabara’s shoulders relax. God, he’s so stupid. He’s got friends who actually want him around. At some point, he’s going to learn how to stop chasing the one who doesn’t.
“My apologies for being late,” Hatori says. “I was checking the portal’s stability. It should remain open for the next three days.”
‘Should’? “Sounds as fickle as my sister’s first car.” Shizuru finally got rid of it after it stalled at a traffic light--three times.
“I am unsure of why the portals occur. I do not know what sort of energy fuels them, nor what triggers their appearance.” Hatori admits. “In fact, the previous portal that opened was...oh, maybe three centuries ago. And the time before--perhaps twice as long? And the time before that--” Kuwabara must be making a face. Hatori chuckles. “My apologies. I only know of human culture through books I have read. Time is quite different for our respective species, isn’t it?”
Oh, yeah--to Kuwabara, at any rate. To the science he’s dedicating his life to studying, not really. He should get used to time being counted on scale so unfathomably large it’s as if he is irrelevant, because he is. “If the portals rarely show up, why don’t you and your lady leave while you have the chance?” B’valan’s a tough bastard, but it’s been hundreds, maybe thousands of years since it began its eternal chase after the Violet Queen. Kuwabara has faith in his friends. Together, they could figure something out so Hatori and his goddess can be free.
Hatori’s quiet for so long Kuwbara regrets opening his mouth. “The last time a portal opened, I thought the same as you. I stepped through it believing that this time was different: My Lady and I could leave our home and make a new one on Makai.” The smile that made Kuwabara so happy fills with grief. “This world is not an easy one to live in. I never imagined otherwise. But that last time--” Hatori swallows. “That last time, I had never seen so much bloodshed.”
Kuwabara shifts uncomfortably on his feet. Weren’t the Three Kings still in charge then? “What happened?”
“The usual: war, famine, the innocent being slaughtered by the powerful. It was--senseless. I lost my taste for living here after that.”
Yeah, he can imagine. “It is different now, though. The whole point of this tournament is to ensure a peaceful transition of power. There hasn’t been any war in the main territories for three years now.” So Yusuke and Kurama say. Kuwabara has to pretty much take their word for everything when it comes to Makai.
“It’s only a matter of time before someone grows tired of the rules, or the wrong person wins the tournament,” Hatori insists. “When that happens, demons will fall back to their old ways.”
Kuwabara bites his lip. Hatori’s got a point, but-- “You talk like you’re not a demon yourself, but you are. These are your people.” He gestures around the room, at the window that offers a view into thousands of lives. Demons live very much like humans do: they sleep and they fight and they eat and they fuck and they laugh and they stare aimlessly at their ceilings contemplating their existence. However terrible their sins, Kuwabara can’t let Hatori give up on them. Especially not when they include Kurama and Yusuke and Yuklna and--fuck him--Hiei, too. “This is your world. Maybe the portal opens because it needs you to come back. Maybe you don’t have to make a home on Makai, because it--it already is.”
Hatori examines his face closely. This must be what that frog Kuwabara dissected in high school felt like. “It’s a moot point,” Hatori says after a moment. “My Lady cannot come.” And Hatori would not live here without her.
“Is she afraid of B’valan?” Kuwabara’s going to hunt down that awful bug dude and squash him for good.
Hatori shakes his head. “It is...I believe a psychological impediment keeps her from leaving our home.”
It takes Kuwabara a second to process this. “What, like agoraphobia?” It sounds bizarre when it leaves his lips, but then he thinks back on his cumulative experience with demons. Yeah, he wholeheartedly believes they could give their literal creator an anxiety disorder.
“I am unfamiliar with that term.”
It’s not exactly Kuwabara’s discipline, either. “Has she ever had panic attacks before?”
A shadow passes over Hatori’s face. That seems like a yes.
“My mom used to get them,” Kuwabara says. He hasn’t thought about that in ages. “My sister did, too, for awhile.”
“They no longer have such attacks?”
Well, his mother is dead. “Shizuru went to therapy for it. It really helped her, though she didn’t have agoraphobia. There are treatments for anxiety on earth.” How well they would work for a demon goddess is anybody’s guess.
Hatori slumps against the wall. His white hair obscures his eyes. “I think she is lonely,” he confesses. “It has been only the two of us for so long. I try my best to give her comfort, but--” It’s too much to ask of one person.
Three days isn’t long enough to convince a goddess to change her mind. “Can I talk to her? I know I’m already asking her to fix my arm.” He wants to tell her about all of the kindnesses demons have shown him, that he’s seen real beauty here on Makai.
Hatori is touched by his enthusiasm. “My Lady is very enamored with humans,” he warns Kuwabara in a friendly tone. “She will have many questions for you.”
Kuwabara smiles. He’ll have plenty of time to answer them all.

part seventeen to this
“Do you have any children?”
Kuwabara tears his gaze away from the ceiling. Hung up like mobiles are kites and brooms, dollhouses and the doors of kitchen cabinets. Hatori has made art out of the mundane objects in human life. It’s endlessly beautiful. “Me? No, I--no. I don’t have any kids.”
“I have a child,” the Violet Queen says, more to herself than Kuwabara. “I have many.” She hums to herself as she sews together the disparate pieces of Kuwabara’s arm.
She remembers being a mother? “You must miss your children terribly.” The venom numbs everything. He can’t feel the pressure of the silk being meticulously threaded through his bone. “I could take you to see them, if you’d like.”
Her sewing doesn’t falter. “No, no. I can’t leave. I have to keep them safe.”
B’valan means nothing to her outside of stories Hatori has told her. What does she need to keep demon kind safe from, if not B’valan’s wrath?
Her voice pulls Kuwabara from his thoughts. “Do you want to have children?”
How does this conversation keep getting turned around on him? “I don’t know,” Kuwabara glances around to make sure Hiei isn’t listening. He hasn’t seen him since his very civil ‘fuck you.’ “I used to.”
“No more?”
Sometimes he dreams about it, children with indistinct, blurred faces that run into his arms and call him ‘dad.’ For a long time, Yukina was in those dreams, the woman he wanted so badly to marry and to love forever. Now she’s replaced by a vague shape Kuwabara doesn’t dare inspect too closely. “My mom died when I was really young. I’m scared of that happening to my kids. I don’t want to leave them alone, you know? Oh, shit.” Is he ever going to think about what he’s saying before he says it?
“It’s alright.” The Violet Queen soothingly strokes the part of his arm that still has feeling. “I’m sorry to hear about your mother. It must have been very difficult for you to lose her.”
He hasn’t spoken of her in years. Not even to Yusuke. “My mom was placed on bed rest during the last month she was pregnant with me. She used to send my sister to the store to buy all kinds of hobby kits so she would have something to do while she was waiting for me to be born.” She made them both teddy bears in a three day frenzy. His mother had stitched each child’s name on the front bow tied around the neck of their respective bear. Shizuru still has hers kept on the highest shelf in her bedroom, while Kuwabara hasn’t seen Mr. Stuffingsworth in almost ten years. “When I think about her, I wonder what she would be crafting right now if she was still alive.” He would have taken better care of that goddamned teddy bear if he’d known she wouldn’t make it to his tenth birthday.
He doesn’t realize he’s crying until the Violet Queen brushes away his tears. “If I may be so bold, I do not think your mother would want her memory to keep you from finding happiness.”
He can’t blame his mom, because it’s him, it’s his own stupid self that gets in the way every time. “A couple of years ago, I almost died.” Fucking Elder Toguro. “I mean, it was basically a foregone conclusion. I wrote this letter to my sister that was my idea at fourteen years old of a last will and testament.” It was important for Shizuru to know what Eikichi’s favorite food was and that his video game collection should go to Okubo. “I actually wrote letters to all of my friends.” He’d hastily burned them all when by some miracle, he’d manage to survive the Dark Tournament in one piece. No one needed to know what he said in those letters if he was going to keep looking them in the eye. “I thought it was a one time thing, but actually, it kept happening? I was almost dying every week! So I just made peace with it. I could die today, and it could be ugly and painful, but I’m---weirdly, I’m okay with that.”
“You’re very young to be so accepting of your death.”
Kuwabara scrubs his face with his free hand. “It’s fucked up, I know! I don’t think having a child would reset that, either. I don’t know if there’s anything--” A kite with a tail made of paper shaped like fire drifts serenely above him. “I think about dying all of the time. Not because I want to die, but just because...if it happened already, I could stop obsessing over it.”
Those dreams he has of hypothetical kids end in one of two ways: the kids leave, or Kuwabara does. And people leave, he knows that, but he can’t take it anymore.
He buries his face in his elbow. He’s not ashamed of crying, but he doesn’t want Hiei to hear.
He feels the Violet Queen pull back. “All done,” she says softly. He looks at the cast of silk around his arm. “It’ll heal completely within the next day or two.”
Kuwabara smiles. He can take the sleeve apart and figure out how it works. “Thank you. For this and for listening to me. I’m dumb, I know, but--”
She taps the scar on his head in gentle rebuke. “You are not dumb.”
He is, though, because his friends have had it so much harder than him and yet they’re functional people: another reason Kuwabara is dead weight. “How is staying away from your kids keeping them safe?”
The Violet Queen lightly touches his hand with her pedipalp. “I have to stay away.”
“But why?”
The tone of her voice changes ever so slightly. It is, he thinks, the true sound of a goddess speaking. “Because I cannot forgive them.” She pulls out of Kuwabara’s reach and disappears into the shadows.
Kuwabara steps back. He stops just shy of the presence behind him. “Hey, Hatori? What was--motherfucker.” He desperately hopes Hiei didn’t hear most of that conversation, or--any of it.
His hopes are quickly dashed. “You’re a coward,” Hiei says. “I was a fool to think otherwise.”
He leaves, of course. It’s no different than a thousand other times, both real and imagined.

Declaration - Remind Me [ CH. 1 ]
He hated this damned island.
The memories in which it held were both sweet and bitter victories and harrowing losses that Hiei never wanted to endure again. He could say that he’d grown stronger since his time here, that he’s changed in ways that he thought were nigh impossible, and he’s better than who he was. However, it doesn’t make it any easier as the looming peaks of Hanging Neck Island cast shadows over the vessel bringing him to the island’s shore. The Captain looks on with dazed eyes, darkened and hazy through the effects of the Jagan, pulling the rudder as the ship reaches it destination. Standing on the railing, Hiei glances over his shoulder then closes his eyes, the Jagan glowing violet beneath his ward.
With the ship’s captain being a lower-class demon, manipulating his thoughts and such was ridiculously easy, and though it might have brought trouble with the Reikai — Hiei needed to do this without anyone interfering. Though that did remind him of that disreputable hotel where humans frequented, increasing the distance of his Jagan’s view, he found that most of the staff were still working whilst there were fewer occupants. Likely brought on by the destruction of the Tournament’s arena a few years ago. Hiei huffed. That fool Sakyo might have been an idiot for destroying it but with the lack of a barrier between the Ningenkai and the Makai, demons found far more interesting ways to entertain themselves.
The Jagan closed and Hiei leapt from the ship’s railing, starting off into the dense forests, his youki quieting until it was practically silent. In the absence of talking, the forest came alive with the sounds of insects and animals shifting in the brush. Hiei’s footsteps featherlight as he side-stepped flowers that had bloomed amidst the greenery and took care not to trip on or press his foot upon tree roots. The dense tree boughs only allowing flickers of sunlight to warm his skin as he passed beneath them, shadows lingering in the corners of his eye of battles hardfought and talks well-had.
Passing through a clearing, his arm ached and seared with phantom pain around the mark etched into his skin. The memory of himself wounded and grasping onto what bit of dignity he had not to show his agony in front of the others. A gentle voice beckoning him to lay down his pride for help. Praising him for such a thing and yet scolding him for taking such a risk. Slowly, Hiei came to a stop and stared out at the clearing, imagining himself and the redhead who stood at his side. He could feel the ghost of Kurama’s fingertips against the once-tender flesh, the pride and worry in his voice before they were interrupted by those desposts who’d dared to believe they could provide a worthy challenge.
Especially using such tricks as a mechanical monstrosity that couldn’t understand pain. Hiei’s eyes closed and when they opened, Kurama’s image was gone from his sight and he turned his head away. It was still early, and the fox was likely preparing for work, realizing that Hiei had left sometime during the night. While it wounded him not to tell Kurama of his intentions, and he might have been foolish to believe with the fox’s age-old wisdom that he wouldn’t understand — if all went awry, he at least wanted Kurama somewhere safe.
Turning away, Hiei felt a light tap against his chest and glanced down at the crystalline blue tear gem which winked up at him with light caught from the dim sunrays. He slowly raised a hand and wrapped his hand around the gem. The memory of a half-made promise to Yukina to visit her, her smile soft and eyes knowing, awaiting something but not reaching for it. She was kind but hesitant yet he loved her all the same.
He only hoped that this endeavor wouldn’t leave her alone and weeping. Cold dread washed over him and his fingers tightened around the gem, careful not to crack it, but reluctant to let go. His right fist clenched, he sighed and relinquished his hold.
There was no hope for it.
His footsteps leading him to the beach where the expanse of the ocean was laid out before him, dense rocks off into the distance, smaller islands mere mounds on the horizon. A warm breeze swept through the grasslands and cooled his skin as he lowered his gaze to water. His own reflection looked back at him and for the first time since he set out that morning, he wondered if what he sought to do was right. Whether it was or wasn’t, there was surely no going back now as he wandered to where the foamy waves crashed against the jagged cliffside. His familiar perch on the rock that he’d been curled upon while recovering from the Dragon’s effects on his body, his cries swallowed by the waves.
Standing there now, Hiei stared out at the horizon.
Would this be the last time he’d see the sun?
Removing his cloak and letting it fall to a heap by his feet, he curled his hands into fists and took a deep breath before holding out the arm marked by the Dragon. The mark had grown still since he departed from Kurama’s home and still, the entity which lingered beneath it did not stir. The mark glowed violet, extending down the length of his arm as his youki built and pulsed within his palm. Familiar pressure that accumulated weight as he wound it together, sending it deep within the mark to stir the Dragon from its slumber. Lowering his hand to the water’s surface, Hiei took a deep breath and closed his eyes.
Yuusuke and Kuwabara’s arguing.
Botan and Koenma’s bantering with Hinageshi looking on and Ayaka sighing at their antics.
Genkai sipping her tea.
Shizuru taking a drag of her cigarette.
Keiko greeting him with a small wave.
Yukina amidst a field of flowers.
Mukuro perched on her throne of pillows, greeting him with a fondness akin to a mother’s.
Kurama turning to look at him and smiling softly, his lips parting to speak, though the image vanished when a voice echoed in his ears.
Why have you come here?
Hiei opened his eyes, finding that it was dark as if someone had blotted out the sun entirely. Yet when he tilted his head back, he found that it wasn’t a sudden spell of darkness but a creature looming over him with endless voids for eyes. He felt every manner of despair wash over him, the slight tremble in his knees and the feeling to fall to them and bow his head. And yet he stood, the icy grip surrounding his heart burned away as he lowered his arm and refused to look away from the Dragon as it emerged from the water.
Its long body shimmering with iridescent violet and black scales, curled around the rock Hiei had been perched upon and looked down at him, claws resting on either side of where he stood, effectively trapping him in place. Heat radiating from the Dragon’s body was hot enough to scald but Hiei stood unabashed as the entity lowered its head enough that it’s muzzle was at level with Hiei’s torso, yet its eyes never left his own.
Unspeakable horrors existed beyond those eyes and Hiei knew that everyone who had ever been consumed by the Dragon was within them. The Void, endless and horrid, shifted and roiled within the Dragon’s very being. There was no escape lest the Dragon willed it and as the entity narrowed its eyes at Hiei, he knew that mercy was unattainable.
“I’m here for you.”
The Dragon’s silence is weighty and eerie, its eyes searching the depths of Hiei’s soul between their mark and the eye contact they shared. For a long while, no one dares to move or speak. The seas are calm and the waves have settled, even the forest is silent.
You have my powers, summoner, you need naught else .
“You are wrong.”
The Dragon’s eyes narrowed and its claws cracked the rock’s surface as it leant closer to Hiei.
Your greed will be your undoing, summoner. Speak your desire.
“Like I said, I’m here for you to bring you into this world with me. And I will not leave unless we go together.”
