I'll make sure to do replies tomorrow. Just finished most of my to-do list, and now I have biographies to cover.
I want to draw my muses as otome from Mai Zhime/Mai Otome. I think that the universe is neat. The story has not aged well, to say the least, but the premise is good. It is from the mid-2000s and a pairing is not kosher with me, so there lies your warnings. As far as I'm concerned, Nina/Arika is the endgame in the future.
And I'm happy they made ShizNat much different this time around.

Just some doodlez
Tumblr media
Some context for the dialouge between some folks:
1. Chizue's disappointed in Zhìmíng for presenting his fur as naturally straight - when in reality, it's poofy. He just using hair straightener or somethin'
2. I have some current concept thingy that Chizue is Liu's reincarnation. So in this scenario thing, Hot Head sees some media about Wukong and starts to randomly feel ticked off. I kinda like the idea of the previous past life bring able to be seen and communicate with the current one so- here's that, ig.

Quid est martyrium? Mortem pati pro Christo. Quid est Christianum? Christum sequi*
- St. Augustine
What is martyrdom? To suffer death for Christ. What is a Christian? To follow Christ.*
After the restoration of the western towers of the Abbey had been completed in 1995, it was decided to fill the 10 gothic niches above the west doorway with statues. The lower part of the towers date from the 15th century and the tops of the towers were completed in 1745. The niches never had statues, although this was obviously the plan of decoration.
It was decided to use the ten niches not just to commemorate saints or worthy figures from the past. So instead of traditional figures of kings or saints, the abbey decided that martyrs of the 20th century should be remembered. The West entrance was to proclaim a message of which too few people are aware: the 20th century was a century of Christian martyrdom. Although the statues are of individual martyrs they are intended to represent all those others who have died (and continue to die) in similar circumstances of oppression and persecution. Their statues were drawn from every continent and many Christian denominations.
Four sculptors completed the statues, carved from French Richemont limestone. The Archbishop of Canterbury, George Carey, unveiled the statues in July 1998 at a service attended by HM Queen Elizabeth II.
Tumblr media
The ten Christian modern martyrs are (from left to right):
Maximilian Kolbe: a Catholic priest who helped Jews in Poland and who died in Auschwitz in 1941 after offering to take the place of a condemned man.
Manche Masemola: a 16-year-old girl from South Africa who was killed by her parents in 1928 when she converted to Christianity.
Janani Luwum:  the Archbishop of Uganda who was murdered on the orders of Idi Amin in 1977.
Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna: a member of the Russian Imperial family (by marriage) who founded a convent but was murdered by the Bolsheviks during the Russian Revolution.
Martin Luther King: the American civil rights campaigner who was murdered in 1969.
Oscar Romero: the Archbishop of San Salvador, murdered by a death squad in 1980.
Dietrich Bonhoeffer: a Lutheran theologian who was implicated in the bomb plot against Adolf Hitler and executed in 1945.
Esther John: a Pakistani nurse and Christian evangelist who was murdered by a Muslim relative in 1960.
Lucian Tapledi: an Anglican in New Guinea who was killed by invading Japanese troops in 1942.
Wang Zhiming: a Christian pastor in China who was executed in 1973 during the Cultural Revolution.
In June 1953, during Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation, she entered through the west door of London’s Westminster Abbey. During her arrival, she was received by massed choirs singing “I was glad when they said unto me, we will go into the house of the Lord” (Psalm 122, 1-3,6, 7.)
On 6 May, King Charles III and Queen Consort Camilla will be crowned at Westminster Abbey. For many, this will be the first coronation they have ever seen. The ceremony will follow a pattern laid out in the Liber Regalis, kept at Westminster Abbey and which has informed the pattern of coronations since the 14th century. The service which will see the Coronation of King Charles and Queen Camilla will include the same elements as the historic coronations which have gone before and everything starts with their entry to the Abbey. This means King Charles III will enter the Abbey through the West door and under the statues of these 10 Christian modern martyrs.
Tumblr media
For King Charles III it will have a particular personal resonance as he will walk under the soulful gaze of his great-great aunt through his father’s side (the late Prince Phillip, Duke of Edinburgh), Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna.
Elizabeth of Hesse-Darmstadt was born on 1 November 1864. Her mother died when she was a child, and she came to England to live with her grandmother, Queen Victoria. Her childhood was Lutheran and her adolescence was Anglican. Elizabeth married Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich, the fifth son of Tsar Alexander II of Russia in 1884, and joined the Orthodox Church in 1891.
When her husband was assassinated in 1905, she gave away all her jewellery, sold her most luxurious possessions, and opened the Martha and Mary home in Moscow. Elizabeth and 17 of her companions formally became nuns in 1909. They soon opened a hospital and began other philanthropic works.
The Tsarist state collapsed in March 1917, and the Bolsheviks seized power in October 1917. Elizabeth was arrested with two sisters from her convent on 7 May 1918, and transported across country to Perm, then to Ekatarinburg, and finally to Alapaevsk. On 17 July, the Tsar and his family were shot dead. During the following night, Elizabeth, Sister Varvara, and members of the royal family were murdered in a mineshaft. Elizabeth was recognised as a saint by the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad in 1984 and by the Moscow Patriarchate in 1992.
Tumblr media
Had there been more than ten niches available, there would have been other candidates available for inclusion in Westminster Abbey. As it stands, this memorial makes a powerful statement about the fact that people are still dying for their Christian beliefs in the present age. Although most cathedrals only seem to commemorate people who are long-dead and long-forgotten, Westminster Abbey bucked the trend in a dramatic and highly poignant way.

Happy Birthday!
I don't always have grand ideas on what to give people on their special day. However, since you have always been a fond reader of my writings, I thought I could write a thing or two to make something especially for you. So uh..
First of all,
Thank you for being born into this world, growing up and blooming wonderfully as you are now. Through all the things in your life, the hardships and happiness, I could finally meet you in your current state; the person that I really love. Thank you for making it through multiple phases of your life. Though it might not always be the best path, thank you for faithfully taking them still.
Thank you for always working so hard. Even when I don't express it, I'm so proud of you. I'm proud of you when you said that you made closings that day, when you aced your presentation, even when you tried your best but things didn't work as planned; honestly whatever you do made me proud of you. Because I know you tried and that's what matters the most.
Whatever you'd like to do, I want you to know that I'll always have your back the way you always do for me too. Be it achieving higher educations or working at your dream company, I really hope you can achieve whatever makes you happy in life. I just want you to be happy in whatever you choose to do, because then I will be happy too.
To say that I'm blessed meeting you in my life is an understatement. I'm beyond blessed to have you as a part of my life. Happy birthday to the sunshine protector, the princess' knight in shining armor, cherriverse's zhimes, and Cherilyn's David. I love you! 🤍
And all these came with a little wish,
"May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit." - Romans 15:13 NIV
Live a long healthy happy life, love.

China Establishes National Blockchain Center Aims to Train 500000 Specialists
China Establishes National Blockchain Center, Aims to Train 500,000 Specialists https://bitcoinist.com/china-establishes-blockchain-centre-to-train-500000/ China inaugurated its national blockchain center recently in Beijing and this newly established national research center aims to play a pivotal role in developing the country’s Web 3 industry. The research center has already set a target to train at least 500,000 proficient professionals. It will reportedly foster partnerships with local universities, think tanks, and blockchain enterprises to drive the advancement of technology within the country. The research center has been backed by the Ministry of Science and Technology to promote the industrialization of the blockchain industry. Furthermore, the objective behind launching the research center is to ensure that there is a comprehensive national-level network in place that will successfully connect the existing blockchain systems within China while providing support to various industries. Related Reading: Bitcoin Short-Term Holder Cost Basis Rises To $25,300, What Does It Mean? A renowned academic from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Zheng Zhiming, said that the existing blockchains in China operate in isolation from one another, impeding the growth of the digital industry. As such, a cohesive blockchain ecosystem would solve this limitation as it would encompass a wider scope. China’s Blockchain Sector Thrives Despite Crypto Trading Ban The center is under the leadership of the Beijing Academy of Blockchain and Edge Computing, a prominent research institution. Beijing Academy of Blockchain and Edge Computing has been responsible for developing the ChainMaker blockchain. This home-grown technology serves as a foundational model for the center’s initiatives. Notably, ChainMaker has gained the support of 50 business corporations, predominantly state-owned entities. Esteemed names such as China Construction Bank and China Unicom are among the prominent supporters. In February, the government of Beijing introduced an upgraded version, referred to as the 2.0, of its data directory system. This system operates on ChainMaker and the primary purpose of this upgrade is to establish a comprehensive and secure platform for collecting and storing data from more than 80 government departments within the capital city. In the face of China’s prohibition of cryptocurrency trading, the country maintains a strong belief in the potential of blockchain technology for various industries and government administration. Demonstrating this commitment, the State Council outlined the blockchain as one of the seven key sectors aiding the development of China’s digital economy, as stated in its 14th five-year plan published in December 2021. Moreover, Chinese enterprises are actively exploring innovative approaches to develop artificial intelligence by leveraging less powerful semiconductors and combining different chip technologies. This strategic initiative aims to reduce dependence on a single type of high-tech hardware, predominantly imported from the United States. In parallel, China is making significant progress in its central bank digital currency (CBDC) project. In April, the country announced the expansion of the digital yuan’s applications to include its ambitious “Belt and Road” initiative which would facilitate cross-border trade. via Bitcoinist.com https://bitcoinist.com May 11, 2023 at 06:30PM

Brigitte Lin and Takeshi Kaneshiro in Chungking Express (Wong Kar-Wai, 1994)
Cast: Brigitte Lin, Tony Leung, Faye Wong, Takeshi Kaneshiro, Valerie Chow, Piggy Chao, Kwan Lee-Na, Huang Zhiming, Zhen LIang, Zuo Songshen. Screenplay: Wong Kar-Wai. Cinematography: Christopher Doyle, Andrew Lau. Production design: William Chang. Film editing: William Chang, Kai Kit-Wai, Kwong Chi-Leung. Music: Frankie Chan, Michael Galasso, Roel A. García.
The American title, Chungking Express, may echo Josef von Sternberg's 1932 Marlene Dietrich classic Shanghai Express, but it resembles that film only in the presence in both of a blond femme fatale -- and in Wong Kar-Wai's film the blond is one only by virtue of a wig. The translated title -- the original meant something like "Chungking Forest" or "Jungle" -- fuses the film's two major settings: the Chungking Mansions, a low-rent building in Hong Kong, and the Midnight Express, a sandwich shop that provides the linkage between the film's two segments. The first part deals with the infatuation of a young police detective, He Qiwu, aka Cop 223 (Takeshi Kaneshiro), with the woman in the blond wig (Brigitte Lin), who is mixed up in a drug-smuggling scheme that goes awry. The second part tells the story of Cop 663 (Tony Leung), and his involvement with Faye (Faye Wong), a young woman who works the counter at the sandwich shop. You might say that Chungking Express begins in the world of film noir and ends in that of romantic (and slightly screwball) comedy, but Wong's film transcends the simplicity of genres. As in his masterly In the Mood for Love (2000), Wong is dealing with characters on the brink of an uncertain future, but with a much lighter touch than the later film. The performances are uniformly fine. Faye Wong, a Hong Kong pop star, brings the quirky character of the young Shirley MacLaine to her role, but with a much greater fragility. Like MacLaine, she has been unfairly labeled with the Manic Pixie Dream Girl stereotype. The extraordinary cinematography is by Christopher Doyle and Wai-Keung Lau.

Event 1: Kacang Puteh
Blog post 1
A large part of why I enrolled for this module was because I wanted to develop a better understanding of UX/UI design so I could develop video games with a better understanding of user experience. AS such, I decided to attend a talk held by Kacang Puteh to be my event of interest for this reflection.
Kacang Puteh is a game design group based in Singapore that hosts game jams and design talks in the hopes of encouraging the growth of creativity within the local game design scene. The talk I attended had 7 game designers give brief 6 minute presentations on their own philosophies of game design. This talk was mostly done to provide food for thought to group members that intended to participate in an upcoming game jam, so it also provided time slots for ice breakers to encourage attendants to warm up to asking questions and discussing their own views on game design with the speakers later on.
The 6 talks are summarised as follows:
It’s all made up: Improv and Games - Zhiming Chen
This talk discussed the use of improv as a design tool during the ideating process for developing a game. The speaker described that this was especially effective at developing concepts and writing very quickly, and how traditional improv practices like “Yes and”-ing with your creative team encouraged collaboration when brainstorming. I honestly felt that this approach didn’t feel all too sound, but reflecting back on my experiences with other game design classes have led me to realise that a more fun approach like this may actually help to encourage an energetic start to get creative juices flowing.
However, I do still feel that improv should be carefully applied since biases may influence the output of such sessions; though kinks such as those should definitely be ironed out as the design is iterated on and improved later.
Games as a Form of Torture - Jared Poon
The speaker discusses that video games are not always necessarily “fun” but may also be “torturous” experiences that are meant to draw out traditionally negative emotions like grief, frustration, depression and more. The thesis that the speaker offers here is that games shouldn’t be stereotyped as funmaking experiences, but also valuable mediums to explore more serious themes; which is corroborated by the speaker’s sharing his own game currently in development that discusses the struggle between a nation’s development and the lives this development ends up overhauling (like a mix of a HDB simulator and Papers Please)
Creating Safe Spaces in Games - Leow Yumi
As a contrast to the more stressful approach to designing games, this talk discussed games as a space to allow players to breathe; essentially being a space for catharsis and stress relief. Considering this talk in relation to the previous one got me to think a little more about the kinds of experiences a game is meant to have and how the design serves these experiences. A calming game should ideally not have particularly difficult mechanics in place, and an application meant for a particular function that would be used on the go should similarly serve that purpose by not being difficult to use when the user is mobile.
Sandboxes in historical fencing - Russell Wee
I think this was one of the more interesting talks for me. The speaker here discussed how, in his HEMA studio, they would spar with different rulesets when they wanted to introduce a challenge during duels. He argued that this gave rise to very different experiences each time, and discussed how limitation both breeds creativity and even encourages very different experiences.
Games of Chance - Monetization and the Gambler's Fallacy - Jared Cheah
This talk discusses micro transactions and the dark patterns some games apply to trick users into purchasing power ups that do not really do anything. Candy Crush was the key example discussed in the talk. The speaker cited how its multitudes of randomly generated levels lull players into a loop then advertises powerups when they fail certain levels. The issue lies in how the game claims that these are “power ups” when these do not actually provide reliable bonuses to the gameplay as every level is randomly generated. If I had to place this into a particular taxonomy, I would say that this is a form of Sneaking since the game actively markets power ups as valuable resources when they really do not give the players an edge.
Everything Goes in The Square Hole: The Gordian Knot of Unleashing Creativity - Timothi Lim
This talk didn't feel quite as structured as the rest from a design standpoint, but I think I did get some valuable insights on user playtesting for video games that I did end up porting over to my user evaluation process. The speaker here used the Gordian Knot and Alexander the Great's solution as metaphors in the game design process. Sometimes designers might find that they cannot quite make out what the solution is to a particular design problem, and the player (taking the role of Alexander) coming along and playing things in the way the tend to do can reveal solutions that set designers back into the perspective of being more user centric in their thinking. In the midfi stage, user evaluations helped reveal to me how I could incorporate better interactions for users by observing someone who had a high proficiency with mobile apps, thereby helping me untangle the knot that was developing better user interactions.

❉ 139 Dreams (Chie Hallard) Revolve
Tumblr media
📑 Table of Contents
Genre: Romance
Word Count: 3,866
Pairing: Reader x Chie
World: My Otome
☾ ⋆*・゚:⋆*・゚: *⋆.*:・゚ .: ⋆*・゚: . ☁
From the moment you first met Chie Hallard, you were hooked on her. She was like a drug to you, something you craved, needed in your life despite how harmful it would be for both of you. She wasn’t the type to be tied down, having goals of her own that she wanted to complete and, honestly, you weren’t even too sure she even knew you existed. You were just a guest, after all, visiting the school every now and then to assist Shizuru with various odd jobs she had for you. The first time you had met Chie was on accident.
You had arrived early for your meeting with the headmistress and Shizuru and, rather than knocking like you should have, you just waltzed right in to find them in a meeting already with three pearl students – the trias, as they were called. At first, nothing stood out to you about them, but then your eyes locked with Chie’s orange ones and it felt as if the world just froze around you. The others seemed to fade away as you focused on the girl, taking in every single detail about her. You had never really been one to believe in love at first sight or any such thing, but after that day, you were convinced that it did exist and it had latched onto you.
You remember the half-smile she sent you, full of confidence and charisma as she passed by, following the other two girls from the room. You remembered her sweet voice as she chatted with the two before the door closed, sealing off any sound from the outside. You weren’t able to focus on the meeting after that, despite how annoyed the headmistress got at you, but Shizuru simply laughed it off, convincing the woman that you were just feeling under the weather.
You were thankful for her input, but you knew that she had figured it out – she had gone through something similar, after all, and she could easily recognize the signs. While you expected her to say something to you, to encourage you or discourage you… she didn’t. She thought it was best for you to figure it out on your own, but you had no idea how.
All you knew for sure was that you wanted to see more of Chie, even if you couldn’t interact with her. Seeing her was more than enough for you, just admiring her from a distance as if she were a star within the sky. You started to make up the worst excuses just to visit Garderobe academy, just for a chance to get to see her and, finally, the headmistress offered you a job.
At first, you were against the idea, believing that you had nothing to offer as a staff member, but she wanted you on as security to watch the students and help keep them in line. Working security was something you were quite familiar with and comfortable doing, so you finally agreed, accepting her offer. Your main task was to patrol the academy grounds and make sure no one was hanging around that didn’t belong, along with making sure the girls weren’t getting up to any trouble.
Most of your time was spent constantly on the move, so even when you got a glimpse of Chie, it was only a fleeting look before you had to move on. You felt like a creep, a loser that was chasing after someone so far out of your league that they didn’t even see you. How could you possibly love someone so damn much that it physically hurt not to see them, when you hadn’t even spoken to them before?
Your whole existence seemed to revolve around her and it made absolutely no sense to you, making you start to wonder if you had been cursed by someone. You considered asking Shizuru for advice, but decided against it, knowing she wouldn’t let it go if you brought it up. Plus, you still had your pride to think about.
You heaved a heavy sigh as you fell onto one of the benches that were scattered around the campus, elbows on your knees as you leaned over. You had been up most of the night patrolling the school and your shift was just ending, leaving you feeling physically tired along with your emotional exhaustion. With another sigh, you pulled out the pack of cigarettes from your pocket, pulling one of the sticks from the box with your lips before tucking it back into your pocket. You searched for your lighter, but it wasn’t there and you soon discovered that the pocket it had been resting in had a hole in it. ‘For fuck’s sake.’
A click reached your ears and, from the corner of your eye, you could see the dancing flame of a lighter as it was held out to you. You didn’t think much of it, honestly, leaning forward to stick the end of the cigarette into the flame before inhaling, watching the embers eat away at the paper. “Thanks.”
“You really should stop smoking, it’s a nasty habit.”
Your eyes widened, that sweet voice that you had grown to love filling your ears and sending your heart into a tizzy. Slowly, your gaze followed the arm up before being met by Chie’s warm eyes, shining with amusement as she held out the lighter to you – your lighter that you had lost.
“I found this on the other side of the campus. It’s yours, correct?”
You swallowed the lump that had formed in your throat, pulling the cigarette from your lips as you reached out to take the lighter with your free hand. “Yeah… thanks.” You expected her to walk away, but she surprised you by taking a seat beside you, much closer than she needed to be. It felt like your heart was going to explode within your chest. Why did she have to be so damn close? More importantly, why did you have to completely lose the ability to react like a normal person when she was?
“You’ve been working really hard lately,” she commented, crossing one leg over the other. “I’ve seen you patrolling the academy all night long, you must be pretty tired.”
You brought the cigarette back to your lips, taking in a deep breath before slowly exhaling to try and calm your nerves. She had noticed you? Noticed your work? “It’s pretty easy work, just long. I haven’t run into any problems.”
“Yet,” she chuckled, her eyes shimmering with amusement. “You’ll quickly find the girls around here like to cause quite a bit of trouble. If they do…” Chie leaned forward so she could see you better, a smirk playing upon her lips. “Feel free to let me know. I’ll make sure they are punished for giving you trouble.”
For a moment, you could only stare into her eyes, feeling as if you were in a trance. Your lips parted, but no words formed upon your tongue. You could only nod in response, making her chuckle.
“You should get some rest, Y/N. I’ll see you around.”
As she stood up, walking toward the main building for class, there was only one thought permeating your mind. ‘She knows my name…’
☾ ⋆*・゚:⋆*・゚: *⋆.*:・゚ .: ⋆*・゚: . ☁
You were walking through the courtyard, the night sky a deep, navy blue, a group of stars dotted throughout, seeming dull under the bright lamps scattered across the campus grounds. There were cicadas chirping in the distance, attempting to attract mates, but their songs got quiet when you got too close, bathing the night in silence. It was nearly two in the morning and, so far, your nightly patrol had gone without a hitch.
Before accepting the job, you had heard rumors about how troublesome the girls could be, especially when it came to being out of bed when they shouldn’t be. One name, in particular, kept coming up – Arika Yumemiya. You were told she was someone you should be looking out for, a troublemaker that loved to break the rules, but you were beginning to wonder if the rumors were just that.
‘I kind of wish something would happen,’ you thought as you pulled a cigarette from its pack, flicking the lighter to set the paper aflame. ‘These nights are so damn boring. Plus, I rarely get to see Chie because I’m going to sleep soon after she wakes up. What a pain.’ The bushes a few feet in front of you started to ruffle and your eyes narrowed. ‘Another animal? I swear, if it’s the queen’s damn cat again…’ You exhaled a cloud of smoke as you approached the bush. “Oi, come out before I make you.”
The bush stilled at the sound of your voice and you scowled.
“I’m not joking. You’ll be in bigger trouble if I have to force you out.”
Still nothing.
“Fine, be that way.” Holding the cigarette between your lips, you reached forward to shake the bush, feeling around for whatever or whoever was lurking inside. A sharp pain shot through your hand and you cursed, the cigarette falling to the ground as you quickly brought your hand back. The shape of a mouth was indented into your skin, drops of blood beginning to bead as the wound opened up. “What the fuck, man. I swear to god, I’m going to kill you.”
When you leaned forward again, a growl reached your ears followed by someone jumping out at you and you just barely managed to dodge out of the way, their body hitting the ground behind you on all fours. It was definitely one of the girls from the school, judging by the gem in her ear, but she was foaming at the mouth, her lips twitching as she growled at you like a feral dog.
“What the fuck…” you repeated, feeling a bead of sweat dripping down your cheek. ‘I know I wished for something to happen, but this is just…’ “Oi, what’s wrong with you? Are you oka -”
The girl launched herself at you, mouth open as she tried to latch onto your skin again, but you dodged, taking a few steps back. She was relentless in her assault, her fingers swiping at you but her nails were normal and did very little damage. When she tried to swipe at you again, you grabbed her wrists in your hands, putting your foot on her chest to keep her teeth away from you.
‘The hell should I do? If I hurt one of her students, Natsuki’s gonna get pissed at me, but it would be in self-defense…’ With a grunt of annoyance, you lowered your foot and twisted your body, using her momentum against her as you flipped her over, slamming her body into the ground.
She cried out in pain, trying to get up, but you pinned her there with your foot on her chest. Her fingers dug into your leg, nails stopped by the thick cloth of your pants. You considered trying to talk sense into her, but from the insane glint within her eye, you doubted the words would even reach her. Was this some kind of illness or infection? You certainly hadn’t heard of anything like that. Her strength didn’t seem to be wavering, either, as she thrashed around wildly, trying to free herself.
‘Looks like I don’t really have a choice here.’
With a sigh, you lowered yourself until your knee rested on her throat, applying just enough pressure to restrict her airflow but not crush her windpipe. She struggled for air, flailing more wildly now, but you were stronger than her and it wasn’t long before her eyes rolled into the back of her head, hands falling limp as she became unconscious. You quickly pulled back so you didn’t kill her, straightening your back and rubbing the back of your head. What were you supposed to do now?
“What in the world do you think you’re doing?”
Your head snapped to the side, finding Miss Maria standing there with a surprised look upon her old face. “Ah, about that -”
She huffed, picking up the skirt of her dress as she rushed over to check on the girl, her emerald eyes narrowed at you. “I told the headmistress that you weren’t a good fit for this school. You’re far too violent!”
You scowled at that, your hand on your hip. “For the record, Miss Maria, she attacked me first.” To prove your point, you held up your hand, showing the teeth marks upon your skin, blood dripping down to the cement.
“My goodness. She bit you?” Her eyes jumped from you to the girl and back again.
“She was acting like a wild dog,” you grunted. “Hiding in the bushes. I swear if I get rabies from this kid…”
“Pick her up.”
“Eh?”
Her eyes narrowed at you. “Pick her up. We need to get her to the infirmary.”
“Why the fuck do I have to carry her? She already bit my ass once.”
Miss Maria sent you a look of indignation. “Honestly, you have such a foul mouth, Y/N! Stop complaining and just do as I say.”
“Fine,” you leaned down, muttering under your breath as you slid your arms beneath the girl’s body, easily lifting her small frame to your chest before straightening up. The walk to the infirmary was silent, broken only by the clicking of her heels as you followed behind her, glancing at the girl every few moments to make sure she wasn’t going to suddenly attack you again. From the current position, she had a straight shot to your neck, after all. ‘If she wakes up, I’m dropping her.’
But the girl didn’t so much as twitch within her unconscious state and you reached the infirmary without an issue. Yohko looked up at the two of you when you entered the room and, as soon as she noticed the girl in your arms, she jumped into action, ordering you to place her down onto the bed. You didn’t hesitate, wanting to get far away from her before she woke.
“If I were you, I’d cuff her to the bed,” you stated blankly. “She’s actin’ like a wild animal and, yes, she fuckin’ bites.”
Yohko’s eyes glanced over at you, noticing the blood dripping from your hand, but her eyes quickly shifted back to the girl as she hooked her up to a machine, preparing to run tests to try and determine what was wrong with her and to make sure she was stable.
Miss Maria addressed you. “Let’s go, Y/N. You need to inform the headmistress of your side of the story.”
‘My side of the story is the only side,’ you thought, rolling your eyes in annoyance before following her from the room. During the walk, you tore a piece of your white shirt, wrapping it around your hand to stop from bleeding all over the place. While the bleeding was steady, you knew it wasn’t life-threatening and you had gotten injuries much worse in the past and survived. Once it was wrapped, you grabbed one of the ends between your teeth, pulling with your free hand to tighten it and tied it so it wouldn’t fall off.
Miss Maria sent you a look, clearly unhappy with your actions, but she said nothing until the two of you reached the headmistresses office. She knocked on the door, waiting for the okay before pushing it open and stepping aside so she could close the door once you entered behind her. Natsuki was sitting behind her desk, holding a piece of paper in one hand while the back of the other was propped against her cheek. Shizuru was sitting on the couch, sipping from a small cup.
Natsuki glanced up at you before returning her gaze to the paper, sounding exhausted. “What have you done, Y/N?”
“I am honestly offended that you assume I’ve done something.”
“Did you do something?”
“Maybe.”
She sent you a deadpan look before addressing Miss Maria who had come to stand beside you. “What have they done and do I need to contact anyone’s parents?”
“Y/N claims Koyuki Hasegawa attacked her, so they took the… appropriate force to subdue them.”
You raised a brow at her, surprised that she hadn’t made it sound worse just to get you into more trouble.
“Is this true?”
“Yeah,” you looked back to Natsuki, holding up your hand before explaining, in detail, what had happened.
Her brow knitted together and she looked to Shizuru, something she often did without realizing it whenever she was worried about something. “Where is she now?”
“In the infirmary.” Miss Maria responded, her hands folded against her lap.
“We’ll wait for Yohko’s report and for Koyuki to wake up. Y/N, you can retire for the night. I’ll assign someone else to take over your shift.” Her eyes flickered to your hand. “Go have Yohko take care of your hand.”
You sent her a mock salute before turning on your heel and leaving the room. Despite her orders to go see Yohko, you just wanted to go back to the staff quarters and go to sleep. You could deal with your hand later. As you stepped out of the building, though, you noticed Chie walking down the path.
With a frown, you called out her name, surprised by the worried look marring her beautiful features when she turned to look at you. “You’re not supposed to be out past curfew, you know that.”
Her expression softened as her eyes scanned your body, but her lips tugged down when she noticed your hand. She didn’t hesitate to close the distance between you, her lithe fingers circling your wrist as she inspected the bloody cloth. “What happened? You need to go see Yohko.”
You shrugged one of your shoulders. “Nah, I can take care of it myself. Get to your dorm before you get into trouble, Chie.”
Her eyes snapped to yours, a smirk slowly coming to her lips. “Let me help you.”
You wanted to tell her no, to tell her that you were fine and perfectly capable of taking care of it, but words failed you as she tugged you toward the school building. You knew you should stop her, to order her to return to her dorm, but honestly, you didn’t want her to. It was if her fingers around your wrist were infecting you with something, heating up your body and making you succumb to her wishes. While you hated it, you also craved it.
Chie led you to the Trias’s meeting room, closing the door behind her. “Take a seat.”
You plopped down onto the couch, eyes following her as she rifled through the cabinet against the wall until she found what she was looking for – the first aid kit. She then returned to you, pulling up a chair in front of you, her knees resting between yours. “What are you doing out of bed?”
She hummed as she took your hand, carefully unwrapping the cloth. “I had a bad feeling. What happened?”
“No idea,” you sighed, turning your gaze to your hand. It had stopped bleeding and started throbbing, a dull achy pain that was just enough to remind you of its existence. Your skin was discolored around the deepest marks and you knew a couple of them would probably scar. What a pain.
You glanced back at her and your heart picked up speed when you realized just how close she currently was, her eyes focused on cleaning the wound and her lips slightly parted as she concentrated. All you could think about was how wonderful it must feel to kiss her.
“There, all done.”
You inspected your hand, wrapped cleanly in white bandages. “Thank you. Now get back to your room before Miss Maria finds you.”
“No.”
“Hah?” Your eyes met hers, narrowing at her lack of obedience. “Chie -”
“I’d rather stay with you,” she admitted with a smile, her hand resting on your cheek.
Your breath caught in your throat, bringing your hands to her wrist. “Chie…”
She hummed softly, tilting her head as she leaned closer, her eyes flickering to your lips. “I know you feel the same way.” Her thumb brushed across your cheek, her voice lowering. “You’ve been watching me since that day in the headmistress’s office, haven’t you?”
You tried to look away, but she wouldn’t let you, her hand slipping down to take hold of your chin. Your heart was hammering away within your chest, the tips of your ears growing hot as you realized how obvious you must have been, acting like a lovesick puppy. You had even changed your life around just for a chance to see her.
‘I should never admit that to anyone,’ your tongue darted out to wet your lower lip and her eyes followed the movement.
“Hey, Y/N?”
“Yeah?” You questioned breathily.
“Kiss me,” she demanded softly.
“What?” Were you dreaming? Had you just been so hyper-focused on wanting to kiss her that your mind imagined her saying that when, in reality, she said something else?
“Kiss m -”
You cut her off by smashing your lips against hers, tugging her onto your lap until she was straddling you, her hand sliding to the back of your neck to deepen the kiss. You didn’t experience fireworks like they describe in the movies, but you definitely felt warmth erupting within your chest, wrapping around your heart. You were engulfed by her – her scent, her taste, her warmth.
It had your head feeling fuzzy.
The need for oxygen had her pulling away and you groaned, leaning forward to make the kiss last a few seconds longer. Both of you were breathing heavily, eyes half-lidded and lips swollen. She chuckled at you, reconnecting your lips with more fervor, fingers curling into your hair. The second kiss was shorter, but it still left you feeling breathless and wanting more.
“Don’t worry,” she spoke softly, her lips ghosting over yours. “I will happily kiss you whenever you want, as many times as you want. On one condition.”
You quirked a brow, your fingers clutching at her hips. “And what would that be?”
Chie pecked your lips, slow and sensual, tugging on your bottom lip when she pulled back. “You have to be mine, and allow me to be yours.”
A smirk came to your lips at the request. “Hmm, I dunno. That sounds difficult.”
“Let me convince you, then,” she chuckled, claiming your lips for the fourth time, her hand sliding into your own, fingers lacing together. With her chest pressed against yours, you could feel her heart beating in time with your own. You didn’t know if heaven existed but, if it did, you were sure it would be this – sitting here with Chie, kissing her soft lips for all of eternity.
When she pulled back, you rested your face into her neck, inhaling the scent of black cherries and mint. “God, I love you damn much.”
She rested her head against yours, squeezing your hand. “I love you, too, Y/N.”

Rise of Sixteen States: 310
[Emperor Guangwen of Han dies. Shi Le travels south. Opposition to Li Xiong fractures.]
16 February 310 – 4 February 311
(Jin's 4th Year of Yongjia)
(Han's 2nd Year of Herui, 1st Year of Guangxing)
(Cheng's 3rd Year of Yanping)
(Liu Yuan)
2nd Year of Herui, Spring, 1st Month [16 February – 16 March], Liu Yuan installed his wife Ms. Shan as August Empress. His son, the King of Liang, He, became August Heir-Apparent, and there was a great amnesty. He ennobled his son Yi as King of Beihai, and used the King of Changle, Yang, as Great Marshal.
2nd Month [17 March – 15 April], Cao Ni from Daliang pulled in the troops and went east. Where he arrived everyone surrendered, and he thereupon overcame Dongping, and advanced to attack Langye.
Summer, 4th Month [15 May – 13 June], Wang Jun's general Qi Hong attacked Han's Inspector of Ji province, Liu Ling, at Guangzong, and killed him.
Autumn, 7th Month [12 August – 9 September], the King of Chu, Cong, the King of Shi'an, Yao, Shi Le, and the Great General who Calms the North, Zhao Gu, besieged the Grand Warden of Henei, Pei Zheng, at Huai. Decreed the General who Conquers the Scoundrels, Song Chou, to aid Huai. Le and the Great General who Pacifies the North, Wang Sang, confronted and struck Chou, and killed him. The people of Henei apprehended Zheng to surrender. The Ruler of Han, Yuan, used Zheng as Assistant of the Left to the Masters of Writing. The Controller Commander of Henei, Guo Mo, gathered and ordered the remaining multitudes, and made himself a fortifications master. Liu Kun used Mo as Grand Warden of Henei.
On gengwu [20 August], Yuan was bedridden with illness, and wanted to make plans for looking after his responsibilities.
On xinwei [20 August], he used the King of Chenliu, Huanle, as Grand Steward, the King of Changle, Yang, as Grand Tutor, the King of Jiangdu, Yan, as Grand Guardian, the King of Chu, Cong as Great Marshal and Great Chanyu, and also to Record the Affairs of the Masters of Writing, and set up the seat of the Chanyu to the west of Pingyang. He used the King of Qi, Yu, as Great Minister over the Masses, the King of Lu, Long, as Prefect of the Masters of Writing, the King of Beihai, Yi, as Great General who Consoles the Army, acting as Colonel Minister of Retainers, the King of Shi'an, Yao, as Great Chief-Controller of Conquering and Chastising, to act as Left Supporter of the Chanyu, the Commandant of Justice, Qiao Zhiming, as Great General of the Best of the Army, to act as Right Supporter of the Chanyu, the Brilliantly Blessed Grandee of the Left, Liu Yin, as Archer-Servant of the Left, the Brilliantly Blessed Grandee of the Right, Wang Yu as Archer-Servant of the Right, Ren Yi as Master of Writing of the Personnel Section, Zhu Ji as Overseer of the Palace Writers, Army-Protector Ma Jing to act as General of Guards of the Left, the King of Yong'an, Anguo to act as General of Guards of the Right. The King of Anchang, Sheng, the King of Anyi, Qin, and the King of Xiyang, Xuan all were to act as Generals of Martial Guards, and divide direction of the forbidden troops.
On dingchou [27 August], Yuan summoned the Grand Steward, Huanle, and others to enter within the forbidden quarters to receive the testamentary decree to assist the government.
On jimao [29 August], Yuan passed away in the Brilliant Pinnacle Hall.
9th Month, xinyou [10 October], he was buried in the Forever Brilliant Mound [Yongguangling]. His posthumous title was Brilliant and Civil [guangwen] August Emperor and his temple title Exalted Founder [gaozu].
(Liu He)
Liu He, courtesy name Xuantai, was eight chi tall. He was valiant, resolute and had a pleasing bearing and decorum, and he was fond of studying and quick to mature. He was familiar with Mao's Poetry, Mister Zuo's Spring and Autumn, and Mister Zheng's Changes. When he became the designated successor, he on the inside was very suspicions and spiteful, and he drove his subordinates without kindness.
When Yuan died, He inherited the bogus rank. The Lineage Corrector, Huyan You was the son of Yi. Yuan considered him without talent or action, and to the end of his life did not change his office. The Palace Attendant Liu Cheng had a long-standing hatred for the King of Chu, Cong. The Commandant of Guards, the King of Xichang, Rui, was ashamed he had not been part of the testamentary instructions. They therefore plotted with each other, and explained to He, saying:
The Previous Emperor did not think of plans for the light and the weighty, but made three kings control strong troops on the inside, and the Great Marshal grasp a millions soldiers and dwell in the nearby suburbs. Your Majesty now readily will become a throne lodger, and that is all. The calamitous difficulties of this are impossible to measure, [I] hope Your Majesty do something soon.
[Liu] He was precisely You's sister-son, and deeply considered it to be so.
On xinsi [31 August], at night, he summoned the King of Anchang, Sheng, the King of Anyi, Qin, and others, to announce to them. Sheng said:
The Previous Emperor is still in the coffin palace, and the four kings are not yet going against authority. Now to suddenly in a single morning make fish and meat of each other, Your Subject fear people will not eat Your Majesty's remnants. The Four Seas are not yet settled, the great legacy is just begun. [I] hope Your Majesty will consider above to put high completing the Emperor's vast foundation as his aspiration, and moreover block his hears and not listen to the words of this reckless negligence. The Poetry states: “Are there no other people? None as good as us of the same father.” If Your Majesty already does not trust the various younger brother, then who can be trusted!
You and Rui were furious with him, and said:
In the discussions of today, nothing of the the reasoning has been the twice,. What is the army leader talking about!
They instructed left and right to cut him down. When Sheng was dead, Qin fearfully said:
Indeed at Your Majesty's decree, Your Subject and others will die serving it, and never will not be of service.
Therefore there swore an oath with each other in the eastern hall.
On renwu [1 September], Rui led Ma Jing to attack the King of Chu at the Chanyu's Terrace. You led the King of Yong'an, Anguo, to attack the King of Qi, Yu, at the Minister over the Masses' Office. Cheng led the King of Anyi, Qin, to attack the King of Lu, Long. They sent the Master of Writing, Tian Mi, and the General of Marital Guards, Liu Xuan, to attack the King of Beihai, Yi.
Mi, Xuan, and others held close Yi, had people cut through gate bar, and ran to Cong. Cong instructed to put on armour to wait for them. Rui recognized that Cong was prepared. He hurried back to meet up with You, Cheng, and others to attack Long and Yu. You and Cheng feared Anguo and Qin had different aspirations, and beheaded them. That day they beheaded Yu.
On guiwei [2 September], they beheaded Long.
On jiashen [3 September], Cong attacked the Ximing Gate, and overcame it. Rui and others ran to enter the Southern Palace. The vanguard followed them.
On yiyou [4 September], they beheaded He in the Brilliant Pinnacle Western Chamber. They gathered Rui, You, and Cheng, and put their heads on display at the crossroads.
(Liu Cong)
When Cong had killed his older brother He, the crowd of subjects urged him to accede to the venerated throne. Cong at first yielded to his younger brother, the King of Beihai, Yi. Yi and the excellencies and dignitaries wept tearfully, and firmly requested it. Cong after a long while then allowed it, saying:
Yi and the crowd of excellencies correctly considers that the Four Seas are not yet settled, and calamities and difficulties are still many, and prefer Your Orphan, long and old in years, and that is all. In these affairs of house of state, Your Orphan dares to not merely follow. Now [I] readily intend to obey Yin of Lu from far away, wait for Yi to come of age, and “return [the government] to my son the enlightened lawgiver.”
(During the Spring and Autumn era, Duke Yin, the son of a concubine, had become the ruler of Lu as regent for his younger brother, the future Duke Huan. However, in the end Duke Yin was assassinated before he could step down. Cong's final sentence is a quote from the Documents, from the Duke of Zhou's speech when he handed over the government to King Cheng.)
1st Year of Guangxing, Autumn, Cong fraudulently acceded to the throne of August Emperor. There was a great amnesty within his domains, and he changed the inaugural to Guangxing [“Brilliant Flourishing”]. He venerated Yuan's wife, Ms. Shan, as August Empress Dowager, and his mother Ms. Zhang, as Imperial Empress Dowager. He used Yi as August Brother-Heir, to act as Great Chanyu and Great Minister over the Masses. He installed his wife, Ms. Huyan, as August Empress. Ms. Huyan was the junior cousin of Yuan's Empress. He ennobled his sons, Can as King of Henei, with appointment as Envoy Holding the Tally, Great General who Consoles the Army, Commander-in-Chief of the Various Army Affairs at Centre and Outside; Yi# as King of Hejian, Yi¤ as King of Pengcheng, and Kui as King of Gaoping.
Winter, 10th Month [8 November – 7 December], dispatched the King of Henei, Can, the Great General who Conquers the East, Wang Mi, the Dragon-Prancing General, Liu Yao, and others to lead a multitude of 40 000, to make a long drive and enter the Luo countryside. Thereupon they set out for Huanyuan. They went around between Liang, Chen, Ru, and Ying, and captured more than a hundred ramparts and fortifications.
11th Month [8 December – 5 January], Cong, since he himself had been installed out of sequence, was hostile to his older brother born by the principal wife, Gong. Following that, when Gong was asleep, [he?, they?] made a tunnel through his walls, stabbed and killed him.
He used the Minister of Works, Jing, as Great Marshal, the Brilliantly Blessed of the Left, Liu Yin, as Great Minister over the Masses, the Brilliantly Blessed of the Right, Wang Yu, as Great Minister of Works.
12th Month [6 January- 4 February], Empress Dowager Shan passed on.Shan was precisely Yi's mother, she was young of years with a beautiful appearance, Cong had sexual relations with her. Yi again and again talked about it. Ms. Shan was ashamed and indignant, and died. Cong grieved and mourned without end. Later he recognized her reasons, and Yi's favour following this gradually declined. However he still thought back on Ms. Shan, and was not yet ready to demote and depose him. He also venerated his mother Ms. Zhang as August Empress Dowager.
Empress Huyan talked to Cong, saying:
That when the father dies the son continues, is the regular way past and present. Your Majesty succeeded to Gaozu's legacy, why is there a Brother-Heir! A hundred years after Your Majesty, Can and his brothers will surely be without offspring.
Cong said:
So it is, I will deliberate it.
Ms. Huyan said:
[If] the affair is stalled, catastrophe is born. The Brother-Heir sees Can and his brothers gradually grow older, and will surely have intentions from unease. In the one out of ten thousand chance there is a mean person driving in wedges in his midst, it is not yet certain no calamity will issue out from the present day.
Cong in his heart considered it so. Yi's maternal uncle, the Brilliantly Blessed Grandee Shan Chong, wept and spoke to Yi, saying:
The far apart is not among the close. The Ruler and Sovereign is thinking of the King of Henei. Your Highness, why would he not renounce you!
Yi said:
At the end of the Herui era, the Ruler and Sovereign, since indeed there is a division between [those born to] the principal wife and a commoner, used the great rank to yield to Yi. Yi, since the Ruler and Sovereign's teeth are long, was pushing him forward and offering him [the throne]. Under Heaven is Gaozu's Under Heaven. When the older brother is at the end, the younger brother catches up, why would it be impossible! Can and his brothers were already strong, similar to the present day. Moreover, distance between sons and brothers, how is it the distance between close and far apart. How could the Ruler possibly have this thought!
(TPYL, quoting Cui Hong's SLGCQ: Liu Cong of Former Zhao's 1st Year, 10th Month, Cong's general Zhao Gu and Jin's General of Chariots and Cavalry Wang Shen opposed each other at Yan Ford. At the time there was yellow fog day and night, people could not see each other, and Gu's army was greatly defeated.)
(JS005: 10th Month … Wang Jun also dispatched his detached general Wang Shenshi chastised Le at Wenshi Ford, and greatly routed him.
11th Month: Wang Shenshi attacked Liu Yao and Wang Mi at Ping Rampart, and routed them.)
(Shi Le)
1st Year of Guangxing, 2ndMonth [17 March – 15 April], Shi Le and Yan Pi attacked Duquan and Yuanshi Ramparts, and captured them. Pin was hit by a drifting arrow and died. Le took combined command of his multitudes, He stealthily went from the Stone Bridge across the He, attacked and captured Baima, and buried more than 3 000 men and women.
He went east to assault Juancheng. The Inspector of Yan province, Yuan Fu, fought and was defeated, and was murdered by his section subordinates. Following that he attacked Cangyuan, captured it, and thereupon murdered Wang Kan. He crossed the He and attacked the various counties of Guangzong, Qinghe, Pingyuan, and Yangping. Those who surrendered Le were more than 90 000 mouths. He again went south to cross the He. The Grand Warden of Xingyang, Pei Chun, ran to Jianye.
Summer, in You, Bing, Si, Ji, Qi, and Yong provinces there was a great plague of locusts. They ate the grass and trees, and the cattle and horse hair are all gone.
Autumn, 7th Month [12 August – 9 September], Liu Cong attacked Henei. Le led cavalry to meet up with him. He attacked the General of the Best of the Army, Liang Ju, at Wude. Emperor Huai dispatched troops to aid him. Le halted the various generals to defend Wude. He and Great General who Pacifies the North, Wang Sang, to confront Ju at Changling. Ju requested to surrender, Le would not allow it. Ju went over the walls and escaped, the army people apprehended him. Le hurried to go to Wude, buried more than ten thousand surrendered soldiers, counted out Liang Ju's crimes and murdered him. The kingly host withdrew and turned back. The various fortified places north of the He were greatly shaken, all requested to surrender, and sent off hostages to Le.
9th Month [10 October – 7 November], a native of Henei, Le Yang, seized the Grand Warden, Pei Zheng in rebellion, and surrendered to Le.
When Liu Yuan died, Liu Cong conferred on Lie Great General who Conquers the East, Inspector of Bing province, Duke of Ji commandery; Holding the Tally, Opening Office, Chief-Controller, Colonel, and King like before. Le firmly declined General, and he therefore desisted.
Wang Ru was a native of Xinfeng in Jingzhao. Earlier he was a provincial military functionary, coming across chaos, he drifted and moved to arrive at Wan. At the time various drifting people had been decreed to together be dispatched to go to back their home villages. Ru, since Guanzhong was wasted and withered, did not desire to return home. The General who Conquers the South, Shan Jian, and the Commander of the Gentlemen-at-Centre of the South, Du Rui, each dispatched troops to send him off, and shortened the appointed time to cause him to issue out. Ru thereupon secretly connected with the various who were undependable and young of years, and at night assaulting the two armies, routing them. Du Rui with all of his multitudes struck Ru. They fought at Nieyang, and Rui's army was greatly defeated.
Shan Jian was not able to withstand, and moved to station at Xiakou. Ru also routed Xiangcheng. Hence Pang Shi of Nan'an (or Xinping), Yan Ni of Pingyi, Hou Tuo of Chang'an, and others each led their partisans to attack the various cities and garrisons, and to great extent killed the prefects and chiefs in response to him. Within a short time, his multitudes reached forty or fifty thousand, and he declared himself Great General and nominal Shepherd of Si and Yong provinces.
Winter, 10th Month [8 November – 7 December], Liu Can led a multitude of 40 000 to rob Luoyang. Le kept behind the supply wagons at Zhongmen, and led 20 000 cavalry to meet up with Can at Dayang. They greatly defeated the kingly host at Mianchi, and thereupon arrived in the Luoyang countryside. Can set out for Huanyuan, and Le set out for Chenggao Pass.
On renyin [20 November], Le besieged Interior Clerk of Chenliu, Wang Zan, at Cangyuan. Zan struck and defeated him. Le fled north of the He to station at Wenshi Ford.
The King of Donghai, Yue, sent out a feathered proclamation to summon the troops Under Heaven. The Emperor spoke to the envoys, saying:
Make my speech to the various [Generals who] Conquers and Garrisons. At the present day [you] still can help. Later there will be nothing to come to.
At the time nobody had arrived.
Le wanted to go north and attack Wang Jun. It happened that Jun's general Wang Shenshi led the Xianbei of Liaoxi, more than 10 000 cavalry, to attack Zhao Gu to the north of the ford. Le therefore burnt the ships and abandoned the camp, pulled in the army and went toward Baimen, welcomed the supply wagons from Zhongmen, and arrived at Shimen. He crossed the He, and went south to attack the Inspector of Yu province, Feng Song, in Chen commandery, but did not overcome him. He advanced to attack the Grand Warden of Xiangcheng, Cui Kuang, at Fanchang, and murdered him.
(JS005: Shi Le captured Xiangcheng and the Grand Warden, Cui Kuang was murdered. Thereupon he arrived at Wan. Wang Jun dispatched the Xianbei Wen Yang to lead cavalry and save it. Le withdrew. Jun again dispatched the detached general Wang Shenshi to chastise Le at Wenshi Ford, and greatly routed him.)
Le wanted to press on to Nanyang. Wang Ru, Hou Tuo, Yan Ni, and others heard about it, and dispatched a multitude of 10 000 to station at Xiangcheng to resist Le. Le struck them, fully took prisoner their multitudes, and advanced to station north of Wan. At that time, Huo Tuo occupied Wan, and Wang Ru occupied Rang. Ru feared an attack by Le on himself, and sent off precious treasures, chariots, and horses, to entertain the host, to join together as brothers. Le likewise tolerated his stubbornness and allowed it. Ru and Hou Tuo were not at peace, and Ru advised Le, saying:
Hou Tuo, although referred to as a subject to Han, is in truth a traitor to Han. Ru is often afraid he will come to attack. Older Brother should prepare against him.
Le had a long-standing resentment for Tuo's changeability, but shied away from Ru's lips and teeth, and for that reason did not attack him. When he heard Ru's words, he was very pleased, and thereupon at night ordered the Three Armies to eat at their mattresses and attend on the instructions, and harness at cock-crow. Those who set out late were beheaded. At dawn he pressed down on the gates of Wan and attacked it. After twelve days he overcame them. Yan Ni led a multitude to save Tuo, but when he arrived it was to catch up, and he then surrendered to Le. Le beheaded Tuo, imprisoned Ni and sent him off to Pingyang, and fully combined their multitudes. His army's might was extensive and thriving.
Le went south to rob Xiangyang, he attacked and captured more than thirty ramparts and fortifications west of the Jiang. He kept behind Diao Ying to defend Xiangyang, and personally led 30 000 of the finest cavalry to turn back to attack Wang Ru, but shied away from Ru's vigorousness, and thereupon pressed on to Xiangcheng. Ru understood it, and dispatched his younger brother Li to lead 25 000 cavalry, falsely telling he was rewarding the army, but in truth wishing to assault Le. Le confronted, struck, and wiped him out, and then stationed west of the Jiang.
11th Month [8 December – 5 January], Emperor Huai loathed that the King of Donghai, Yue, monopolized authority, and therefore decreed to the Inspector of Qing province, Gou Xi, saying:
We, due to lacking virtue, and military chariots again and again rising up, above dread the bother to the ancestral temple, below sympathise with the constraints of the myriad masses, and must rely on the regions' peaks to be the state's fences and buttresses.
His Excellency's power is an awesome blazon, putting on display and beheading [Gongshi] Fan and [Ji] Sang, running off and bringing down [?] Qiao and [Lü] Lang. The followers of Wei Zhi then were executed and eliminated. How is it not exalted discernment and clarity in judgement? We made use of the consignments' completeness, and additionally, Wang Mi and Shi Le being worries for the altars of soil and grain, and for that reason there was a decree consigning control of six provinces, yet Your Excellency modestly divided up smaller nodes. Examining the disobedience to the great instructions, it is not what is spoken of as sharing worries with the state.
Now [We] again dispatch a decree to readily grant a proclamation to the six provinces, to unite together in a great undertaking, and cut away and eliminate the state's difficulties. [We] have declared Our thoughts on it.
Xi then circulated a proclamation to the various [Generals who] Conquers and Garrisons, the provinces and commanderies, saying:
Heaven's steps are difficult and dangerous, disasters and hardships flow full. Liu Yuanhai makes rebellion in Fenyin, Shi Shilong causes chaos in the Three Wei. They bit-by-bit eat the imperial domain, and overthrow and destroy the Ye capital. They join together ramparts near the suburbs, and keep shaking Yan and Yu. They have murdered three Inspectors and killed two Chief-Controllers; the commandery wardens, officials and chiefs buried and lost number several tens. The hundred families drift away, liver and brain stain the earth.
Xi, though trifling and negligible, shoulders the weight of the state, and thus is slowing the pace to the corners of the sea, guiding the drumsticks for the group of guards. The Mediocre One received the central decree, and was entrusted with East of the Passes, to supervise and control the various armies, and reverently accept the decreed instructions.
On the agreed upon date, the present month's second day, [I] undertook to go west and cross to Liyang, and on that day obtained the Grand Warden of Xingyang, Ding Ni's plain report on affairs. Li Yun, Chen Wu, and others aided Huai, and the various armies greatly fought with the Jie. All were routed and scattered. Huai city had already fallen when the Grand Warden of Henei, Pei Zheng, was seized by the traitors.
The overnight guards at the watchtower are depleted and the Son of Heaven suffers difficulty. The perils of the Ancestral Temple are very much those of a pile of eggs. At the day of accepting the tidings, [I] anxiously sighed with bathed breath.
Xi considers it to be that previous kings selected the foundations and clarified virtue, making using of dress and insignia, and by these means fenced and strengthened the royal house, and there was nothing that would lead to the city's ruination. Thus when the boats and oars were not strong, Huan of Qi called Chu to account. When King Xiang pressured the Di, Wen of Jin came to chastise.
In all cases to shelter and support the august house, to spread strength to the foundational court, even though trapped in the heat of boiling water, is the great righteousness which is sweet. In addition the shepherds of the various regions all receive glory and favour, their righteousness shared to end of their strength, and so repaying the state's kindness. Xi, though not martial, is at the head of initiating military action, feed the horses and wrap up provisions, to anticipate the regions quelling. All of us sharing the same oath ought to share in hurrying to the rescue. To display and set up a name for steadfastness lies in this act.
Shi Le obtained the circulated proclamation, and therefore in great anger said:
[I] swear to not live together with these thieves between Heaven and Earth.
(From “Le obtained” to here is taken from the “long” reconstruction of the SLGCQ. I couldn't figure out what the original source is.)
12th Month [6 January – 4 February], Cao Ni routed Langye and went north to attack the lands of Qi. Gou Chun shut the city to defend himself. Ni's multitudes shifted perfectly [?], with continuous encampments for several tens of li. Gou Xi turned back, climbed the walls, and looked at them, he had a fearful face. He and Ni fought continuous battles, every time he routed him.
(Presumably the city is Linzai, capital of Qing province?)

(Li Xiong)
5th Year of Yanping, at the time Li Xiong's Grand Steward Li Guo garrisoned Baxi. A man from his retinue, Wen Shi of Tianshui, killed Gao, and used Baxi to surrender to Luo Shang.
Earlier, Qiao Deng had gone to the [General who] Garrisons the South, Liu Hong, to request troops. Deng, courtesy name Shenming, was a native of Xichongguo in Baxi. He was Qiao Zhou's grandson. At the time Central Plains were in chaos, he was posted with Hong for three years, but was unable to obtain troops. Hong petitioned for Deng to be General who Spreads Fervour and Interior Clerk of Zitong, to righteously levy the population of the Three Ba, Shu, and Han as troops, to overcome and take the submission of the province's commanderies. He levied the drifting soldiers of Ba and Shu, and obtained 2 000 people.
The General who Pacifies the West, Luo Shang, had withdrawn to dwell in Ba commandery. Deng accompanied Shang to force the Yi army to chastise Xiong, but did not get it. He therefore left to attack Dangqu, beheaded Tuo, and ate his liver. The thieves of Baxi were routed, and he again went to Shang to seek an army.
Shang's advisers and assistants often considered it surely to be without profit. Deng was resentful and livid, and several times confronted and smashed them. He also increasingly made demands to Shang. Shang only looked down on him and that was all. It happened that Luo Yang killed Xiong's Grand Commandant, Li Li, and raised up Zitong to come and surrender. Deng advanced straight to Fucheng. Xiong himself attacked Deng, but was routed by Deng.
(The death of Li Li took place in 309, the previous year.)
Xiong's General who Pacifies the Robbers, Li Feng, was at Jinshou. Liang# province at first, since it was routed by Xiong, was not defended. However Qiao Deng at Fu, the Army Advisor who Pacifies the West, Xiang Fen, stationed at Yifu in Anhan, and the General who Smashes Charges, Zhang Luo, stationed at Pingwu, pressured Xiong.
Zhang Luo, advanced to occupy Heshui in Jianwei. In Ba and Shu they made a verse which said:
Qiao Deng governs Fucheng, Wen Shi is in Baxi, Zhang Luo defends Heshui. How will the Ba Di go forward?
The levied people were bringing down Xiong's leaders, and the thieves hence were on the verge of difficulties.
Xiong's general Zhang Bao's younger brother Quan was in Hong Qi's midst. Qiong dispatched Bao as a rebel as a deceit, promising to use him as replacement for Li Li. Bao was habitually nefarious and brave. He first killed a person, and afterwards ran to Zitong, and secretly connected with his heart and belly. It happened that Luo Shang dispatched messengers to placate and acknowledge Qi. Qi and outers set out to send off his messenger. Bao closed the city gates from behind them. Qi and others ran to Baxi. Xiong got Zitong, and designated Bao as Grand Commandant. Xiong himself attacked Xiang Fen, and Fen fled.
Luo Shang's original advisers and assistants resented Qiao Deng's self-important disrespect, and did not provide his army with food. Xiong knew Deng lacked food, and dispatched Xiang# to go and attack him. The troops were destitute and the soldiers hungry, but had pledged to die and did not withdraw. The multitudes likewise starved to death but there were none who left. Deng had earlier brought along Xiang#'s son Shou, wishing to use him to persuade Xiang#. As he was being attacked relentlessly, and rescue and assistance did not arrive, he returned Shou to Xiang#.
Autumn, 7th Month [12 August – 9 September], Luo Shang passed away in Ba commandery. Shang, courtesy name Jingzhi, also named Zhong, courtesy name Jingzhen, was a native of Xiangyang. He was successively Assistant Gentleman to the Masters of Writing, Grand Warden of Wuling and Runan. He moved to [Inspector] of Liang# province, and presided over the province.
A written decree appointed the Grand Warden of Changsha, Pi Su, as Inspector of Yi province, concurrent Colonel of the Western Yi, and General who Spreads Fervour, to be in charge of the righteous levies and the Pacifies the West Army, and take on to advance and govern the Three Passes.
At the time Li Xiang# was relentlessly attacking Qiao Deng. Pi Su arrived at Badong, and directed the Pacifies the West generals Zhang Shun and Yang Xian to relieve Deng. Luo Shang's son Yu was livid and resentful. Increasingly Deng's food transports were not supplied. Su when he arrived in Fu, wished to put in order [those who] who were carrying out affairs. [Those] who were carrying affairs were deeply afraid.
Winter, 12th Month [6 January – 4 February], Su arrived at Dianjiang in Ba commandery. Surrendered people, Zhao Pan and Yan Lan of Tianshui, at night killed Su. Su, courtesy name Taihun, was a native of Xiapi.
The Chief Commandant of Jianping, Bao Zhong, killed Luo Yu and Zhao Pan. Ba commandery was in chaos, Zhang Shun and Yang Xian turned back and did not rescue Qiao Deng. The officials of the Three Offices sent up for the Army Overseer of Badong and General of the Best of the Army, Han Song of Nanyang, to be Inspector and Colonel, seated in Badong.

(Zhang Gui)
(JS: At Linsong Mountain in Zhangye a rock had the “Gold Horse” [ 金馬] characters. It was worn and destroyed, and more or less possible to understand, but the Zhang [張] character was distinct and clear.)
(TPYL quoted the SLGCQ: At Linsong Mountain in Zhangye there was a rock like the “Zhangye” [張掖] characters. The “ye” [掖] was gradually destroyed, [but] the Zhang [張] character was distinct and clear.)
There was also an inscription which said:
Begin to take on Under Heaven, the Western Region calm for ten thousand years.
Guzang also had a dark stone with white dots forming the Twenty-Eight Lunar Lodgings. Auspicious grain with one stalk having nine ears was grown at Guzang.
At the time Under Heaven was already in chaos, and those who were sent to there with instructions did not arrive. Zhang Gui dispatched envoys to present tribute, year after year he did not give it up. The Imperial Court praised him, and again and again passed down letters with the imperial seal to placate and acknowledge him.
4th Year of Yongjia, 11th Month [8 December – 5 January], a yellow dragon set out from the Linqiang He, it issued out from the water and ascended into the sky. Its body was more than ten zhang long.

The Chinapuri finale and its montage aka censorship who?
I decided to do all of this in one post and read more, so that the 95% of my followers who are uninterested on this particular drama/source material can easily skip it. Here are 7 relationships showcased in the montage ranked and 2 bonus (a family relationship and an extra).
Note: I’ll speak about the relationships as they were portrayed, whichever the form of relationship chosen to display in this version. Also, I’m glad that everyone was aged up in this version, kinda wild but very much appreciated that some of these actors are my age or somewhere around there lol
#7 Lu Xia (Echizen Ryoma) and Qi Ying (Ryuuzaki Sakuno)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This drama was a bit more romantically-inclined in terms of these two than the anime/manga was, but some of that may be also influenced by them giving their version of Sakuno more room (which yay!) and having them be older.
For this to stand alone as a drama, it was a needed step, I believe. I found Lu Xia to be more vulnerable than Ryoma, he doesn’t feel quite as ~cool~ and it doesn’t take away from the character that he has moments showing internal struggle (in tennis as well as at home). These two were sweet and adorable, which gave the drama probably more of an expected appeal for a wider audience, to make it stand on its own as a drama and not only an anime adaptation.
#6 Yan ZhiMing (Inui Sadaharu) & Liu Lian (Yanagi Renji)
Tumblr media
Kinda mad they didn’t do this for Fuji (Zhuo Zhi) and Saeki (Zuo Xiaohu) but they did good with these two. I didn’t know at first why they started to build up their relationship so early, but it ended up being a good emotional plot point during their match, which is, as we all know, a determining factor in Seigaku’s (Yu Qing) win against Rikkai (Hai Guang).
I don’t remember being as invested in their match in the anime as I was here, maybe I was just too focused on the Fuji match at that time, but what they did to build that game as a decisive point in the season finale was so well developed, I was impressed.
#5 He XingLong (Kawamura Takeshi) & Ya JiuXin (Akutsu Jin)
Tumblr media
This is a relationship that can get complicated and even problematic if handled incorrectly. Akutsu’s journey through the anime is pretty long and takes a while for him to be on a healthier place, but the added element of aging the characters could have gone really wrong here if they had done him exactly as in the anime or manga. I think they did pretty well with the time they were given, showing his turmoil and learning curve.
XingLong was allowed to have a more in-depth journey being older and about to graduate, it made more sense for him here to think about his career at this stage and added the gravity of this being THE moment to decide whether to keep pursuing the sport or take over his dad’s restaurant (they even adapted the type of food they cook to match the cultural impact of the family-owned business, which was great).
I think the two complemented each other really well and worked interestingly together, in a way I didn’t think the drama was gonna give them time to do, so I’m really pleased.
#4 Qiao Chen (Momoshiro Takeshi) & Zhang BaiYang (Kaidoh Kaoru)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
My younger self is thriving with this one being included tbh. These two were so much fun in the anime, two rivals and opposites that represented the future of the team upon their elders leaving.
I was surprised to see them so focused here, because it’s not a relationship most adaptations put emphasis on (their loss), but it paid off immensely by the time their game against Bunta and Jackal (Jin WenTai & Ke Jie) came around.
Kaidoh is a tough one to adapt most times, and they did him so well in this one, I think this is my favorite live action Kaidoh in any adaptation, and I’ve watched a whole bunch of tenimyu in my day. They really captured the ambiguity of his character, how he balances a tough exterior with a sensitive core. Qiao Chen maintained his feelings for Xu Xingzi (Tachibana Ann) but that didn’t stop them from showing these two every time they could.
#3 Mu Siyang (Tezuka Kunimitsu) & Ji Jingwu (Atobe Keigo)
Tumblr media
Oh, these two. Hyotei (Xing Yao) wasn’t featured as much as one would probably expect (I’m a Fudomine fan and with Yu Feng I got more than I even was expecting, but I admit Hyotei is a riot and I always live my best life when they show up). Still, they did the Tezuka/Atobe match justice and then some.
Mu Siyang was incredibly compelling as Tezuka, and had a vulnerability to him that made me worry for his health more than I probably did for his anime counterpart. Maybe also the fact that he was older than his anime version yet looked younger than him made it sink more that his injury was something to worry about. I wish we had time to include anime!Tezuka’s issues with yips with Siyang, because I know the drama would have pulled it off, but that was further down the line in the story. Maybe for a season 2.
Anyway, the Atobe/Tezuka game is one of the best games in tenipuri history and the drama knew it. The game felt like it earned its gravity with the development of both Siyang’s injury and Ji Jingwu’s determination to play against him. Then they sprinkled the camp on top, as the anime does, with Ji Jingwu paying for his every expense and calling him to get updates, which is 100% canon compliant imo.
I feel like Ji Jingwu didn’t have enough room to be as much of Atobe as he could be, but then again, that’s not easy for anyone to pull off. Not even Kato Kazuki can do Junichi Suwabe as well as Junichi Suwabe.
#2 Bai ShiYan (Yukimura Seiichi) & Tian ZiLong (Sanada Genichirou)
Tumblr media
So, it’s tough to feel for Rikkai (Hai Guang) at this point of the story. You learn about Yukimura’s health and it’s difficult, but you just met them and the first impressions haven’t been great.
However, the relationship between Sanada and Yukimura has always been something pivotal for the way the team is constructed (they were named that way for a reason, two parts of a same hero and all that) and they sustain the team in a way other teams don’t have to. They are the mom and dad of the team, the coaches, the leaders and the pillars. They have a balance of severity and permissiveness, of strictness and instinct. They are like a couple who has been married for 25 years.
How on Earth, I asked myself, will they achieve that with censorship on the way? I don’t know, but they did it, the mad bastards.
It really does come through 100% the importance of their relationship and the way in which the captain’s health affects the team and, more than anything, their vice captain. It reaches a crescendo during the final match, before ShiYan’s operation, and they manage to pull it off with the time they have.
Also, their scenes are like shot for a contemporary romance drama and I appreciate that vibe.
#1 Tang JiaLe (Kikumaru Eiji) & Chi DaYong (Oishi Shuichiro)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oh boy. Look. I still own Golden Pair merchandise from my Days, ok? These two hold a special place in my heart. I saw actors who portrayed them grow up, succeed and pass away, sadly. I still sing Depend On Me sometimes. There is a cheerful vibe with these two, a sense of overcoming obstacles and finding balance, I don’t know. Fuji is my favorite character but these two are special in their way.
This freakin’ drama just went full on Golden Pair. The level of content was off the charts. The moment they came on the screen, the second they talked about their doubles, it was already setting the tone of how deep their relationship was going to go. I am a bit amazed that they avoided to get closed down for this ngl. And I appreciate the risk because it paid off.
They have a body language communication that is captured in every shot. Even when they’re not the focus of the scene, they’re close, touching or holding each other, arms around each other, hands on each other’s shoulders, grabbing each other’s clothes. When they fight, that language changes drastically, and the distance they take feels intense and cold. You go through it with them and the team shows it as well. There’s an entire episode I had screencaps of and never posted when the team falls apart because they do.
My favorite part, though, ironically, isn’t what they did with them together but what they did with them apart. They took time to develop them as individual characters with their own issues, their fears, their worries and weaknesses. They were allowed to be flawed and wrong and have to mend their ways.
What really got me and impacted me deeply was the fact that they chose DaYong to talk about mental health. They gave room to speaking about the physical implications of anxiety disorders and about how self esteem issues can give more magnitude to ongoing issues with your mental health. Again, the age of the characters being changed helped add a depth to some issues that get developed with more intensity in a drama of this kind, and the way in which it takes TIME to get resolved, it isn’t a one episode thing, it’s an underlying issue that spans the season...*chef’s kiss*
Even though there’s a specific tenimyu incarnation of these two that I hold dear and will always remember fondly, I think that Xu Ke and Zhu ZhiLing are the most successful and best portrayed live action Golden Pair I’ve ever seen.
Bonus that was in the montage but it’s specifically about a family relationship: The Zhuo Bros
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I have said Fuji has always been my favorite and his relationship with Yuta as an older brother (albeit he’s not the eldest sibling like me) is one I always felt close to.
In the anime, the two have a rocky relationship that gets developed throughout, but the drama is very good at establishing not only Zhuo Yu’s (Fuji Yuta) self esteem issues, the subsequent use of that Guan Yue (Mizuki Hajime) does and Zhuo Zhi’s (Fuji Syusuke) attempts to breach the gap between the siblings, they also use it to develop Zhuo Zhi’s character and his reticence to show weakness.
It’s tough to get Fuji towards a place of vulnerability without breaking character, but they used family and the care he provides to his brother as a point to further his story, and I appreciate that a lot. They managed to build Zhuo Zhi up with this sibling bond as one of his core elements, and that gave a lot of dimension to his games and his character.
Bonus that wasn’t in the montage but I’m including in some capacity: Mu Siyang (Tezuka Kunimitsu) & Zhuo Zhi (Fuji Syusuke)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I thought these two deserved a place in the list, even if they weren’t grouped much in the montage, because the drama did make them share moments together that I feel gave more depth to their characters.
There was a very interesting moment in which they showed Mu Siyang and Zhuo Zhi establishing their differences when approaching tennis, and how serious Mu Siyang is about taking the team to victory. I think that strengthened the character as a captain to me, in a way that shows it rather than tells it, and allowed for his guidance to still be present when he wasn’t physically there. His determination ultimately influenced Zhuo Zhi to take things more seriously, and that was a pretty interesting development to see.
All in all, I should, at some point, go and do a serious review for MyDramaList but I wanted to leave in my blog how much I appreciated this adaptation. I wasn’t expecting much and I was delivered everything.

Prince of Tennis 2019 Hunger Games AU:
(Aka something I half-daydreamed after reading the Hunger Games prequel and watching the Prince of Tennis live action series):
When 15 year old Lu Xia volunteers as the tribute for District 4, even the peacekeepers are bewildered as to whether he can do that. After all, he spent the majority of his childhood in the Capitol with his mother. However he was born in District 4 and returned there the year before to live with his father in the Victor's Village, and so they allow it.
People talk, as they always do, wondering whether this was why he returned to them at all, why he kept to himself and always seemed to be training for something. It was.
The 15 year old boy he took the place of, Ah Mu, sobs with relief and gratitude and sorrow for this stranger who has certainly saved his life.
His father, the famed Victor, Lu Xiangqian, only watches in silence as his son walks toward the stage. There is no pride in his face, only terror.
Next they call the female tribute, and nobody steps forward for Qi Ying as she moves towards the stage, dwarfed by all those around her. She knows she doesn't stand a chance.
Lu Xiangqian is silent as he accompanies his son on the journey to the Capitol. Although he does not say anything, it is clear that this brings back memories of his own Reaping, 20 years previously, when he was just an unknown boy from an impoverished family, and not yet an underdog success story lauded by the Capitol. He has not been there in years, had returned to District 4 shortly after marrying and remained there even when his Capitol wife left him, taking their infant son with her, to return to her home. He is met with cheers and screams in the streets.
Also accompanying them is Qi Na, Qi Ying’s aunt and a fellow previous Victor. She won her own games two years after Lu Xiangqian, and although not quite as beloved a figure as he is, she too is welcomed in the Capitol. In spite of the quiet life she has enjoyed since her own games in the Victor’s Village of District 4, she takes it upon herself to mentor both Lu Xia and Qi Ying, determined that one of these small children will make it out alive. Still, her heart breaks every time she looks at them, realizing she will at some point likely have to make the choice between saving her niece and saving her former mentor and friend’s son.
Lu Xiangqian cannot bring himself to mentor his own son, and he knows that Lu Xia would resist all attempts for him to do so. Instead he spends time talking with the others at the training centre, giving tips when he knows Lu Xia is listening in. In particular, he finds himself bonding with a plucky young boy from District 8, Qiao Chen, who somewhat reminds him of himself.
Despite Qi Na’s advice for them to make allies, Lu Xia keeps to himself, and Qi Ying sticks close to his side. He makes no effort to befriend her, but he does not send her away either.
During training, they meet some of the other tributes.
Mu Siyang is the Career tribute from District 2, although he is not the standard Career as Lu Xia thinks of them. Siyang trained along with several other boys from his year, and managed to best them all. At 17, despite being a year younger than is usual for volunteers, the mentors from District 2 believed him to be far more capable than any of their 18 year old trainees, and so prompted him to step forward. Siyang, who had long since accepted that he would one day be reaped, merely did as he had been asked, with little complaint. He is tall and strong and by far the favorite to win, even favored by the Head Game-maker's own son, Ji Jingwu. His one weakness, which he hides from the tributes, is an old arm injury that occasionally acts up. Like Lu Xia, he largely keeps to himself, although he seems willing to train with others when they approach him.
Another unusual choice for a Career- and also a favorite for victory- is 17 year old Zhuo Zhi, from District 1. Similar to Siyang, he was supposed to volunteer in the following year, at 18. However, at the Reaping, it was his younger brother's name that they called, and the 18 year old who was supposed to volunteer- Guan Yue- remained silent, knowing that Zhuo Zhi would take his place. Lu Xia immediately marks him, aside from Siyang, as the toughest competition. Zhuo Zhi is careful not to practice his skills in front of the others, and there are rumours- supported by his high scores from the Game-makers- that he has no weaknesses. He seems to spend time with Siyang the most, seeking out his company and joking in an interview that they were both clearly fated to be in the games together this year rather than the following year.
Yan Zhiming, an 18 year old from District 3, is seemingly omnipresent in the training arena. He watches his competitors train with a sharp gaze, gathering data on all of his opponents. He takes the time to learn all of their strengths and weaknesses. It is only when Zhang Baiyang from District 7, tired of being watched, snaps at him to actually pick up some skills while he can or his data isn't going to be of any use in the arena, that he realizes he needs to learn to put his information to use.
Although not a Career, and despite only being 16, Zhang Baiyang is another favorite to win, strong and steely and determined. The only problem is he does not do so well with interviews, acting sullen and withdrawn in a way that comes across as sulky rather than arrogant. He puts maximum effort into training, although he himself does not seem confident in his ability to win. When Yan Zhiming approaches him with the offer of an alliance, he is reluctant to accept, but ultimately agrees after a seeming change of heart. Neither of them know how long it will last.
Qiao Chen, also aged 16, is from District 8 and is considered more of a dark horse in the competition. While he does not have the strength of the Careers or Baiyang, he is agile and has high endurance. His cheery attitude also endears him, both to the viewers and other contestants. Although not Baiyang, who gets fed up with Qaio Chen following him and trying to copy his strength exercises. At the prompting of Lu Xiangqian, he attempts to ally himself with both Lu Xia and Qi Ying, trying to earn their trust. Lu Xia remains suspicious that this is either just a ploy or that his father is orchestrating it solely for his benefit.
He Xinglong, 18, is from District 11 and is considered another dark horse. In interviews he is mild-mannered and friendly, but when talk turns to family, his face turns hard and he announces that he promised his father he would come home, and that he intends to keep that promise. He is up there in terms of raw strength, although in the training sessions he spends more time working with the paints and learning to camouflage and hide himself. Asides from Qiao Chen, he is the only one Lu Xia may consider as a potential ally.
While not a favorite to win by any means, it is not considered outside the realm of possibilities for Chi Dayong, an 18 year old from District 5, to emerge victorious. He is an all-rounder, strong and intelligent, although he is somewhat slow and tends to trust others perhaps too quickly. To the surprise of many, Siyang seems to befriend him, becoming the only person other than Zhuo Zhi (and occasionally Yan and Lu Xia) that Siyang speaks with. He seems to be aware of the fact that he will not win, and is simply striving to stay alive for as long as possible.
Despite the rumours and the fact that the girl from his home of District 6 is, Tang Jiale, also aged 18, is not a morphling addict. His twitchiness comes from nerves only, as like Dayong he knows he is unlikely to live. While he is nimble and quick, he is not necessarily strong and he lacks stamina. He becomes close to Dayong over the course of their training, and by the time the two head into the arena they have a strong pact: If they're going out, they're going out together, at least.
Huang Jing and Ma Xiuwen are from District 9 and District 10 respectively, and deep down they both know they will not last long. Still, both boys are just shy of 15, and are in denial about their odds, doing their best in training to gain skills and strength in spite of the fact that their mentors have already abandoned them as lost causes. Together they copy the moves that Siyang does, trying to emulate him, and even Lu Xiangqian and Qi Na offer them advice. Huang Jing reassures Xiuwen that their training will pay off, that the two of them will make it right to the end, but he knows his words are empty.
The first time that anybody pays attention to Qi Ying is during the interview stage. She departs from her script and speaks of the atrocities, both awaiting them and in their home districts. Her speech is heart-rending poignant and heavily edited by the time it reaches the Capitol.
Lu Xia does not say much in his interviews, only stating that he is here to beat his father's records, although he does, to the surprise of many, defend Qi Ying.
Jiale and Dayong drum up some popularity in the interviews, with their clear affection for each other being viewed as an inspirational friendship by many. They both secretly wonder how much of it is built on the need to survive.
Another popular duo, for a different reason, are Baiyang and Qiao Chen. Their squabbling during training comes to a head during the interviews, and members of the Capitol gossip about the potential for a passionate showdown between the two once they enter the arena.
Siyang's interview only gains him more respect: He is introspective, intelligent, and calm, speaking about the event that is about to unfold with sorrow but also a resignation that is mature beyond his years.
Zhuo Zhi plays up the mysterious angle, bantering with the host (and Jiale, in an unexpected friendship that some of the audience love) and smirking throughout. The only time he cracks slightly is when his brother, who he volunteered for, is mentioned: That is when his determination to get home is truly revealed.
Lu Xia is slowly starting to realize that winning the Hunger Games may be harder than he initially thought.
