— piercentyre is definitely my favorite ship !! i think hawk definitely had some objective chemistry with everyone , but trapper and hawk just had undeniable love for each other since the beginning . i miss them so bad you guys !! so bad

— ohh i love the idea of charhawk , two opposites who have this undeniable soft spot for one another , who love each other . i would go as far as to say that there is this unspoken understanding that this is true , but unfortunately i don’t think anything would ever come of it . they’re both so stubborn and in a way , so shy . but man i love this ship . i love it

— i definitely see how people ship houlihawk because there’s the enemies to lovers tension going . i see them more as besties who give each other a hard time out of love , but it’s a cute ship !

— charmarg is really special to me because i just love that charles treats her differently than every other man on the show . he sees her for margaret , even if it is partially because he was around only for her character after her development . this isn’t to say they never have disagreements , but i love the mutual respect between them and that they’re both very soft for specifically one another . whether platonic or romantic ( which i can definitely see ) charles and margaret are SO important to me

— hawkahy is so cute and i love it when hawk flirts with him , but all i see it is is rather harmless flirtations lol

— i honestly think the subtext between trapper and margaret was so random 😭😭 i just don’t think it really fits either of their characters . i do , however , wish they’d done more with a friendship with them because i think they flirted with that idea when they had their sweet moments . because i would’ve eaten up a good margaret / trapper duo

— i also like henry/klinger and mulcahy/klinger ( platonically or romantically ) and trapper/oliver

what if i ended the ship war with this abomination of a doctor who/mash au which doesn't even abide by my own various headcanons: hawkeye creates hawkeye-2 from his hand [callback joke to 'adam's ribs'] and leaves him on a beach somewhere with BJ and Peg to do whatever they want with him wink wink free threesome hook, you're welcome

and hawkeye-1 drives off with trapper in a car to kick ass, take names and fuck filthy-sweet every night for the rest of their immortal lives.

Oh, fun variety with these ones! If it's alright with you, I'm gonna skip #15 for all three (at least for now) because it takes me a while of listening to music while specifically thinking/looking for parallels/vibes with a given ship before I can come up with anything. By the time I do that, I'll forget to come back to my ask box to answer this! So apologies, but also my music taste is extremely old-fashioned so it probably wouldn't be all that interesting anyway.

Roy/Riza:

8. What do they love most about the other? Why? I think going from a strictly canon reading, Riza loves the ideals that Roy believes in and wants to put in place as reforms. She's dedicated her whole life to helping him achieve that. And in turn, and I think Roy loves Riza's loyalty - not to him, specifically, but to their shared cause. He knows he can trust her above anyone else to see it through, even if she has to go through him to get there. In addition, I think they both find solace in knowing each other so well, having met before the military really entered their lives and changing together through Ishval and beyond. 9. What do they dislike most about the other? Why? I think Riza dislikes Roy's carelessness most because it makes her job harder because it in some ways betrays their goals. Roy is the one and only person she will ever trust with her father's life's work and the only person she trusts to see the necessary reforms put in to in some way try to atone for their actions in Ishval. She also can't cope with the idea of living without him, so for him to try and fight a killer in the rain without thinking of how severely disadvantaged this makes him understandably upsets her on multiple levels. For Roy, I think he probably most dislikes the fact that Riza clearly can't cope without him, more so because he would hate the idea of her suffering like that in his absence than because he sees it as some kind of character flaw.

Hawkeye/Trapper:

21. Do they enjoy domestic life? So, given it'd be the 50s and they're two men, that's a tough one. I think in the absence of any fear of being "discovered" and discriminated against/arrested, though, they'd get on fine together. They already have experience sharing living space, and in the worst possible conditions. There's little things that would bother each other (just watched "Alcoholics Unanimous" yesterday, and they have a wonderfully domestic spat about Hawkeye using Trapper's towel while shaving and Trapper's toenail clippings ending up by/under Hawkeye's bed), but I think they'd be able to just bicker for a few minutes and move on. The major roadblocks are pretty much external factors (how their relationship would impact Trapper's ability to see his girls, the strain of living semi-closeted in 50s America, etc). 26. What sacrifices do they make for the other? Given the way the show was written, it's easier I think to pinpoint the sacrifices that Trapper makes and could/would make in a relationship with Hawkeye than the other way around. He's almost always the one getting roped into Hawkeye's schemes or messes (good example is him blatantly committing perjury in "House Arrest" while coming up with a cover story for where Frank got his shiner), and if they were to pursue a relationship back home he would be the one having to give up his stable family life with the wife and two kids unless they kept it secret, and then Hawkeye would be the one sort of making sacrifices there (but I just can't really see that lasting or being something either of them would put up with for longer than just a casual "every once in a while" sort of thing when they happened to both be in the same area). Not that Hawkeye doesn't ever make sacrifices for Trapper (from the infamous "Longjohn Flap" to shelving any sadness he might have over Trapper possibly leaving in "Check-Up" in order to celebrate with him), but it's something he'd have to work on in a serious relationship with Trapper. For the record, I don't think he'd struggle too hard with it, just the way the show framed him as the protagonist and Trapper as his sort of "second" gives it that slightly uneven dynamic. Probably the biggest thing is that, once stateside, Hawkeye would likely have to be the one to move so that Trapper could remain close to his daughters. Depending on where you land as to how much Hawkeye really loves Crabapple Cove or not, that may be a small or a really large sacrifice.

Margaret/Hawkeye:

46. Do they consider their relationship casual or serious? Is the answer different depending on who you ask? Why? Hm, this one probably depends on the circumstances. I think in "Comrades in Arms", Hawkeye was looking for something more casual than Margaret (partly because Margaret was married to Donald at the time, and partly because he liked their dynamic as-it-was whereas Margaret seemed to think she needed to go into Mistress Mode like with Frank or the generals that used to come knocking). I think Hawkeye valued Margaret's friendship so much at that point that he'd rather that not change and they not be together than to be together and have her change her behavior for him. If we were talking post-canon, I think it could almost end up flipped, where Hawkeye might cling to Margaret harder for the sense of familiarity she gives him while she's more focused on figuring out her life post-army. Then again, I could also see them mutually agreeing to a casual thing post-war based on the finale kiss. 50. Would they ever break up? If so, why? Who would handle the breakup better? Haha, well they sort of did? If they were in a genuine relationship, I could definitely see them breaking up (and getting back together, and breaking up again, etc). The big, unresolved thing between them is their political/ideological differences, which the show really de-emphasized as the years went on and Margaret became part of the "in" crowd less enchanted with the army/the war (compare her clear distress at the idea that peace talks might be starting in an early scene with Frank from I want to say "Dear Dad" vs her commiserating with Hawkeye about the points system being changed to keep them longer in "Peace on Us"). However, without the army/the war as a mutual enemy of theirs, they could definitely end up butting heads on politics again back stateside which could possibly result in a permanent break. I'm not sure who would handle a breakup better, honestly. I think Margaret would handle it worse at first and then probably get over it if she found someone new, whereas Hawkeye would probably be outwardly fine but miss her long after she was gone.

15. What songs remind you of their relationship?

17. How well do they communicate? Are they open with their feelings/thoughts or more reserved? Why?

i think we see them communicate quite well for the most part in canon, and i imagine this carries over into a romantic relationship. i think that when it's too hard to say something, they might be more inclined to show it instead (e.g., trapper's final kiss)

20. How do they comfort each other when one of them is upset? Is this method of comfort effective?

they try to make each other laugh, no question. hawkeye in particular leans very hard on this. when that doesn't work, they both want to be physically reassured. hugged, lavished with kisses, curling up around each other in bed, they just want to be loved on so good that it chases the bad feelings away or at least quiets them down. i think both of these methods are effective for both of them. hawkeye definitely pulls out the groucho/yankee doodle doctor character all the time, which is inexplicably also effective UNLESS he tries to kiss trapper when he still has the greasepaint moustache on (this has happened more than once and trapper hates it so much).

23. What are the defining characteristics of their relationship?

elaborate nonsense, sincere and deep-rooted love and affection, getting hawkeye pregnant

Ok I have some Thoughts™️ about Trapper’s leaving m*a*s*h and how it was handled which I really want to throw out into the void even tho there’s only a very small, concentrated fandom for this 50-year-old show… so bear with me.

Is Trapper leaving without a goodbye scene heartbreaking??? Do I wish, for Hawkeye’s sake, that he’d at least left a letter?? Are the first 15 minutes of Welcome to Korea just gut-wrenching and painful? Yes. And this, dear friends is because of good writing!!

One of the things that’s great about the way Trapper leaves—suddenly, no note, no goodbye, just a proxy peck on the cheek for Hawkeye via Radar when he returns to camp and finds Trap gone—is that there’s no way to be justifiably mad at Trapper for disappearing. He was discharged suddenly and did everything he could to contact Hawkeye, unsuccessfully. Yes, obviously he could have left a letter for a more satisfying, cathartic departure but realistically… there is more to say than could ever be said in writing between Trap and Hawk and I think they both know all of the things that are worth saying, so it wouldn’t accomplish much even if he’d tried, especially since we did get that goodbye scene in Check Up when it looked like Trap might be leaving, then didn’t. No, the reason Trapper’s leaving without a proper goodbye feels so unfair is because of all the irreplaceable in-person stuff that we, the audience, and the characters are cheated out of. Looking into each others eyes, some final wisecrack and parting words of brotherly affection, one last embrace. A wave as the chopper takes off or the keep drives away. I think the proxy kiss is left as an attempt to encompass all of the love and melancholy and bittersweetness that those moments would have conveyed.

I don’t think anything else the writers would have done for that moment, except if Wayne Rogers would’ve stuck around to explain his character’s exit in the first episode of season 4, could’ve really packed the same punch. The abruptness of his leaving is quite emotional and sends Hawkeye on the tense chase after him to try and get some cathartic goodbye and we’re all disappointed for a second time when he misses him at the airport. It’s all the more painful for Hawkeye because you can imagine how guilty he feels for not being there, for not answering the phone, for allowing the one good thing keeping him sane (or something resembling it) in the war to get away without his even seeing him off. It’s really effective and the kiss as a goodbye really speaks volumes by saying so little!!

Like I said before— we’d already gotten a goodbye scene, and a one-sided letter wouldn’t have done justice to Trapper and Hawkeyes friendship anyways!! The kiss is so wonderfully ambiguous in its meaning but also so delightfully unambiguous and all-encompassing. Piercintyre is one of those ships I’m chill with shipping kind of casually. Actually I really like them as a couple and think if they just kissed a little.. cuddled sometimes… y’know, the works— that it would actually add so much to their relationship and homies should kiss sometimes, actually. But regardless of that they canonically just mean so much to each other as friends. Beyond the things that they say out loud in Check Up, it’s evident in the way they take care of each other, how well they know each other and joke with each other and would do anything for each other. Their casual physical contact, they’re matching dress up. It’s all right there. They’re best friends they’re family they’re bonded forever by the horrible circumstances they have endured and attempted to make enjoyable together. Regardless of how you, the audience, or they, the characters (if they were sentient), define their relationship. They love each other. And the proxy kiss on the cheek communicates that.

I’ve seen some people say that they wouldn’t have been able to have that kiss on the cheek if it hadn’t been framed the way it was—through Radar who’s obviously uncomfortable passing it along. That if it had actually been Trapper we wouldn’t have that peck on the cheek at all. Idk that that’s true. Hawkeye kisses Henry on both cheeks in Abyssinia, Henry and he very very casually and briefly gives Trapper a little peck in Kim when he gets the letter from his wife agreeing to adopt the little boy. It’s part of a whole celebratory hug/embrace there and it’s just the best ever and I think a more subdued, sweet, melancholy and maybe even a little lingering version of that could have been a part of an in-person goodbye. And that would have been fantastic. If we could have had a proper goodbye scene between them… just a really brief one, not drawn out like Check Up is. Like if everything was the same but Hawkeye just caught Trap at the airport and he had 30 seconds to say goodbye and hug and deliver or receive that peck on the cheek. I think that’d be the bestest ever.

But as it is, with Wayne Rogers not being in the episode at all. I think the writing choices are as good as can be expected to deal with the abrupt departure and it pivots really tidily into welcoming BJ (although I wouldnt have minded a brief grieving period like if he’d shown up the next episode instead of the same episode or smth like that). Like I hate from a psychological, shipping, character supporting perspective that Hawkeye didn’t get something more concrete and permanent and explicit from Trapper, like a letter. But the fact that I feel that way and that I’m so so sad on Hawkeye’s behalf is an indication of good writing choices. And it does the thing. The thing mash is always trying to do. Which is remind you that it’s a show about war which is constantly and infinitely unfair, arbitrary and abrupt and doesn’t care about your feelings.

So in conclusion it’s really sad and thinking about it brings me great psychological and emotional pain but I’ve made peace with that fact and I applaud the writers for making me feel that way.

Ship It!

What made you ship it? You know for a long time I didn't, and it was really two things. What first opened me up to it was seeing different takes on it. When I first joined the fandom I really saw one popular piercentyre narrative and I hated it (and still do). The thing that made me ship it was one time I rewatched The Consultant and Hawk said "if you're trying to get me drunk it'll probably work" and I was like "oh they are not going golfing, are there?

What are your favorite things about the ship? I just love that they're best friends! Shipping them for me is basically just adding sex, the rest of it is already there in the show, so it's fun! I love the way they interact onscreen, it kind of makes me insane. They're one of the best depictions of best friends I've ever seen, which is special to me, and I like friends-as-lovers. Also they'd end up in either Boston or Maine which are my stomping grounds.

Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship? I just cannot stand angst for this ship. I hate it. Unless it's the variety of angst where one of them dies. I don't think Trapper broke Hawkeye's heart. I don't think Hawkeye was more in love or that Trapper couldn't communicate his feelings. I think Trapper was incredibly good to him and they were both realistic about their future together.

What made you ship it? I have eyes! I didn't actually like hawnk at first but the more I watched the show the more I noticed it and then I started shipping it as a joke and that only ever ends one way. They really have some chemistry going on.

What are your favorite things about the ship? It's just so fucking funny. Hawnk is like. Hawkeye is waging psychological warfare on Frank by flirting with him, but Frank doesn't pull away and the gay chicken goes too far. I love how toxic and messed up it is. I like seeing Hawkeye in a dominant role. I like that it's the only gay MASH ship with an onscreen kiss.

Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship? I mean, liking hawnk is kind of an unpopular opinion. I've gotten crap for it before. Deep down I don't think they could ever have a relationship per se, but it's something I'm open to exploring in fic. I guess my unpopular opinion is I think Hawkeye holds some affection for Frank. I think it's unavoidable because of how much they've been through together. He can't not have compassion for Frank. I don't think he really hates him.

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? between the two longform fics i've posted—someone is waiting and so this is the word—they both have happy endings! i suppose whatever is happier depends on if you're more of a fan of piercintyre or hunnihawk endgame

8. Do you get hate on fics? i've never received any direct hate, so none that i'm aware of.................... 

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind? yes; not usually plain pwp because i like having somewhat of a story tied to the smut but every once in a while it's less plot-driven

What’s your all time favorite ship? legitimately such a hard question lol; there are some ships that i don't even think about actively shipping because in my mind i nearly forget that they're not canon (see: spirk, skysolo, albert/dale, illya and napoleon, etc.) whereas there are certain relationship dynamics that continue to make me feel like the top of my head is being torn off and i think always will (twelveclara is absolutely insanity inducing, vanerackham also being a ship that really took over my brain and has not let go since, honorable mention to whatever barisi did to my psyche as a seventeen year old); not to mention all the relationships from non-fandom (for lack of a better term) media that i find extraordinarily emotionally impactful (tommy and axel in edge of the city, omar and johnny in my beautiful laundrette, whatever is happening between hamlet ophelia and horatio, same with karen joe and martha in these three, could name plenty of books and films and plays that this happens to me with)

all of this to say, it probably is piercintyre (still with a lot of love for hunnihawk) or spirk

15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will? i have a few mash fic drafts that have been sitting in my notes app since literally 2019 so we will see if those ever see the light of day lmfao

What are your writing strengths? i think i'm very good at third person limited POV, which is how i write all of my fics (i don't like first person POV fics, despise omniscient, and find second person hardest to write); i also think that i'm pretty strong with narrative structure (comes with being a dramaturg lol) and internal dramaturgy and detail when it comes to researching for my writing

17. What are your writing weaknesses? i don't write linearly (this applies to my academic writing as well as fics) which i think does often make it harder on myself when piecing together a bunch of vignettes and trying to make them flow; i think that my understanding of narrative structure helps me get around this but i do wish i didn't always throw in an obstacle to my own writing. i also think i can be a bit too succinct (this is more a challenge with my academic writing than my fics imho but is a note that i get consistently from my committee haha)

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic? if the writer actually knows how to speak it and isn't just throwing text into google translate on a wing and a prayer, i don't always HATE it hate it; i've read a few good the man from uncle fics where if illya is speaking in ukranian or russian it's either mentioned in a character's POV or the text is put in italics which i think is a more effective device in communicating that the characters are speaking another language rather than the one the fic is written in

19. First fandom you wrote for? i wrote very bad doctor who and sherlock fanfiction when i was in middle school which i published on deviantart LMFAOOOOOOO

Favorite fic you’ve written? i think the honor has to go to someone is waiting—it was just such a labor of love and weaving in all of the sondheim references that have been so important to me with a longform exploration of hawkeye's takes on love was (as cheesy as it is to say) really special to me as a writer and it means so much that it resonated with so many people! (plus it has a very good soundtrack)

— most basic ass thing ever but its that his actual name is ben , ( benjamin ) , like . look at him , ben is the most cutest most perfect name for him ever

— personality - wise it’s that he yells when he gets upset , like watching scenes where he genuinely YELLS at margaret stresses me the fuck out . and i know it’s ( usually ) situations where he’s being done dirty but also cristo dude . and also someone pointed out that the blanket on his cot has dried blood all over it and it haunts me to this day

reason why i watch it: i really do find it to be a smart and engaging show! it’s well-regarded for a reason and it’s because all of the writers very clearly were dedicated to their craft. shout out joe keenan ily joe keenan

why i started watching it: i like watching gay episodes of older shows and it turns out i really, really liked the matchmaker, and i just kept watching it, then ski lodge, then the doctor is out, and finally i said to myself “i should just be watching this whole show actually”. and i was right

Seinfeld

favorite character: i think i have to go with george on this one his specific brand of Being just rings so true. he sucks he’s doodoo and it’s very fun

funniest character: probably george again. he just hits my funny bone idk what to tell you

3 favorite ships: the idea of having “ships” for this show full of the worst people in the worst relationships is a little laughable but george/any man is funny enough for me to consider

least favorite character: this one’s tough because most of the annoying characters are one-offs and so you don’t have time to resent their presence; they’re purely functional. sometimes they lean a little hard with newman

least favorite ship: the inverse of george/any man, which is of course jerry/any woman. he doesn’t deserve any of them, and i’m including elaine

reason why i watch it: i love shows full of people who suck and seinfeld got that shit right in an era where we were supposed to like our tv leads a lot more. for a show that’s hailed as being “about nothing” it’s somehow both mundane and full of plots that you could not get anywhere else. every time i think about the junior mint i just go. what the fuck.

why i started watching it: seinfeld is my one of my dad’s special interests so i was indoctrinated young

3 favorite ships: hawkeye really does need to fuck men. for enrichment. hunnihawk is classic, as is piercintyre, and my eyes have been opened to hawkeye/sidney. i wish i could talk about more women but i don’t want margaret to have to deal with any of these men and i haven’t met helen whitfield yet so i can’t speak to her. and there are sadly not nearly as many women on this show. its biggest flaw i’d say

least favorite character: i really don’t have one in mind they all generally work very effectively. i suppose that i think flagg is less fun to hate than, say, frank, but they serve very different purposes so i don’t mind that i react to them differently—flagg is recurring, not a regular, so it’s right that he’s best in small doses. is this enough of an answer

least favorite ship: cannot get behind hawkeye/radar. that’s literally his aunt you guys

reason why i watch it: i feel like it’s boring that i keep answering “it’s a really good and compelling piece of television” but why do you watch tv shows. because they’re good and you like them. that and i do suppose i like to see how gay of a sentence hawkeye can say without being questioned. (CAPTAIN SODOM??)

why i started watching it: it’s a classic of all classics. i’ve been on a real 70s sitcom kick and for whatever reason i was watching ones that were far far worse than mash and i was like i could be watching mash. so i did

Well, if i cant ship beejhawk endgame because i dont buy them as good friends, then the reverse is true for piercintyre.

however... i actually dont really ship hawkeye endgame with anyone, it's just if i had to choose, it's trapper. Their platonic relationship is just as valuable to me as any kind of romantic relationship, not for wHy CaN't MeN jUsT bE fRiEnDs reasons (and anyway, friends can and should fuck) but because the chemistry is so stupid good between them, they are two peas in a pod, they are improv partners, they are twin flames!! i dont feel im missing out on anything by them being a non-canon ship!! Maybe if MASH was like... porn, then i could say i'd be sad if we never saw them fuck.

Related to the above, i happen to have a trapper for a best friend 💕💖💕💖💕💖💕 Relationship goals, they make me unwell, i love them, im making otps platonic, i am projecting on them, fandom ruins them most often not by not seeing the romantic potential in them but by undermining their friendship.

The primary role of the trapper character was to support the hawkeye character in whatever endeavour he was pursuing, without question. No one asks "hey, why is trapper doing this thing" and the writers didn't ever explain it because Trapper's motivation is always clear! We can assume he shares Hawkeye's core values but narratively, it's his job to do things with Hawkeye! He understands him! That's what a best friend does. That's what love is.

6. Top 3 favorite episodes? The Interview, Dr Pierce and Mr Hyde, aaaaand probably The Late Captain Pierce? I'll say that for url reasons, but honestly after those top 2 (which are my easy favourites) I find it hard to pick a specific third, there are so many excellent contenders.
