Pre-Joseon Sageuks: a Biased and Incomplete List
So, as promised way earlier, a post on pre-Joseon sageuks that I’ve either watched or plan to watch so am aware of them. I am sure there are others but here is what I got. Obviously my takes on them are subjective blah blah blah.
Jumong - arguably the Daddy of all Traditional Sageuks, this one ran for over 80 episodes and had insane ratings. It follows the rise of the mythical founder of Gogureyo tho it takes fantastical elements of his story and changes them for historically plausible ones. It’s very long and very meaty and politics/battle heavy and has a large cast of complex characters (including pretty nifty women and a LGBTQ supporting OTP) but it is anchored by the incredible performance of Song Il Gook as the titular character as he slowly but believably grows from nothing to a hero if at the cost of losing his marriage.
The King of Tears Lee Bang Won - this is basically a half and half beast as (you can tell by the title), it’s set in the last days of Goryeo and early days of Joseon. The time period covered is the same as in My Country and Six Flying Dragons, but this is the most traditional take of them all, even more so than 6FD. Not a single pretty face in the cast (tho Joo Sang Wook is a mighty fine man, emphasis on “man”), this is for the real fans of traditional sageuks. I enjoyed it a lot but if you want to check out pre-Joseon sageuks but have mainly watched youth sageuk stuff before, you should probably start with another drama on this list.
The Great Seer - set in the reign of King Gongmin, the last proper king of Goryeo (his son King U is technically the very last but there are questions as to his status), this is for those of you who want to watch Ji Sang in a sageuk. It’s centered around seers but don’t expect mysticism, this knuckles down to politics.
Shin Don - hi there, another story set in the reign of King Gongmin! From the title, you can tel it centers heavily on the powerful monk who ruled for the King at one point. This has been on my to-watch list forever because this appears to devote a decent chunk of its time to Gongmin X Noguk and I am dying for a proper drama for those two. This is from 2005 so if you do watch, keep that in mind in terms of visuals etc. That cast is lit!
Bicheonmu - this is sort of cheating because it’s pretty much set in China but it involves Koreans so. It’s a drama take on the same story told in a pretty awesome movie. Tragic love, battles, young Joo Jin Moo etc. i am very fond of it. This said, find and watch the Chinese version, Korean one was shredded.
The Iron Empress/Empress Cheon Chu - set in Goryeo, this was another of women ruler centric dramas that had a mini popularity peak in late 00s/early 10s (a trend I wish continued.) it got overshadowed by Queen Seonduk but by all accounts is a solid drama. It’s on my list but I haven’t watched it yet.
The King’s Daughter, Soo Baek Hyang - by the writer of The Rebel and My Dearest. Have I got your attention? Another woman centric ruler tale set in Baekje. Yes, there is a love story. That cast is great, to boot. I have started and liked what I’ve seen but got sidetracked. Need to get back to it. Before you look at the ep number and faint seeing the number 108, keep in mind that the eps are half an hour long so it’s an equivalent of a normal 54 ep sageuk so if you can watch eg Empress Ki, you are good with this.
My Country: The New Age - Lee Bang Won but make it gay. OK, I kid, sort of (not really) but this is smart and passionate and heartbreaking. If you want a wide scope or lots of politics, probably not a take for you (Six Flying Dragons is RIGHT there), but if you want an intense, emotional tale, come right in!
Six Flying Dragons - to me, this is THE drama about Lee Bang Won. It’s smart and emotional, deals with politics and has heart. It has a large cast of characters I got invested in, OTPs that will blow your mind etc etc.
Faith/The Great Doctor - if you are a fan of old school shoujo like Red River, Basara or Fushigi Yuugi, this or Moon Lovers are your best bet on this list. A time traveling tale with other fantasy elements about a modern day plastic surgeon who ends up being kidnapped into Goryeo during the early days of King Gongmin’s (hi!) reign by a tormented, oath bound warrior played by Lee Min Ho at his hottest (and playing historical General Choi Young. Do RPS at your pleasure), this one is one of my all time favorites.
Seodonyo/Ballad of Seo Dong - I am actually currently watching this one tho I haven’t been posting about it. Set in both Baekje and Silla, this is an angsty love story with a side of politics. It’s filmed in 2005 and looks accordingly but if you don’t mind dated visuals, this is pretty great!
Emperor of the Sea - set in Silla and Tang, this was a huge hit and deservedly so. Our protag is a slave and gladiator and a great naval hero. This is grim and smart and epic. It’s from 2004 so once again, if dated visuals are no-go, skip, but if you want a great story and performances, this has your name on it.
The Kingdom of the Winds - an epic cursed prince narrative, our ML (Song Il Gook at his sexiest) rises from abandoned prince and slave and abused assassin to general, royal and king, sparing time for an angsty delicious love story with an enemy princess. This has serious sageuk bits AND the best shoujo tropes in the business, plus enough whump to keep anyone happy.
Gye Baek - Lee Seo Jin, another sageuk stalwart, stars as the title character in this tale of a Baekje commoner, war slave and general. This is grim but glorious.
Soldier/God of War - this is a traditional war-centric sageuk and grim as hell. Another slave to general tale.
King Geun Chu Go - this is on my watch list; it’s about a warrior king of Baekje. Haven’t seen it but heard good things.
Ja Myung Go - smart and unrelentingly tragic, featuring Jang Ryeo Won and Jung Kyung Ho as doomed lovers and Park Min Young in an evil role, this is great and has deeply flawed characters in the very definition of doomed by the narrative tale.
Arthdal Chronicles - this is obviously a fantasy but the tale of prophesied twins, magical priestess, wars and mysticism is clearly set in a pre-Joseon in terms of aesthetics world.
Alchemy of Souls - like Arthdal this is pure fantasy but also like Arthdal, a lot of its styling is pre-Joseon so on this list it goes.
Moon Lovers/Scarlet Heart Ryeo - ok I think if people have heard of only one drama on this very long list, it’s probably this one. Modern time traveling heroine ending up during the reign of Goryeo’s King Taejo, in the middle of his sons’ fight for the throne, having an epic but doomed romance with shoujo catnip tortured bad boy Lee Jun Ki.
Shine or Go Crazy - if you want a more historical take on Moon Lovers succession fight but still with plenty of hotness, angst and doomed romance, come right in. This baby stars Jang Hyuk, so you know it’s bound to be good. I actually started it and enjoyed it but got sidetracked. Need to get back to it. Fun fact: while Moon Lovers was hugely popular internationally, domestically Shine or Go Crazy (they aired around the same time), did much better.
The Legend/The First King’s Four Gods - for a long time this was my favorite kdrama of all time and is still probably in my top 10. Ignore the odd first episode, the rest is perfection. Expensive and wonderfully written, this was Bae Yong Joon’s last drama before he retired to rest on his pile of money (if you are young, you probably don’t remember what a big deal he was, bigger than all the Hallyu stars nowadays put together. He basically was singlehandedly supporting the kdrama industry at one point), but what a worthy way to go out. It’s an epic Goguryeo fantasy tale of a prophesied prince coming into his own, with such amazing characters and relationships and OTPs and battles and points about destiny versus free will. It is everything and I kinda want to rewatch now.
The Blade and The Petal/Sword and Flower - ostensibly a star-crossed Gogureyo love story, this really is more about politics. It’s a mixed bag. The visuals are insane but Uhm Tae Woong, while always solid in modern dramas, is out of place in a sageuk (in QSD Kim Nam Gil stole his thunder; there is nobody to do so here but that doesn’t help him.)
Queen Seon Duk - probably the most famous entrant into female power sageuks, this was a mad hit and centered on the titular character’s rise to power and fight for the same with her female nemesis Mishil. If you want love stories, angsty fighter Bidam propelled Kim Nam Gil to stardom as he stole the leading man mantle from Uhm Tae Woong.
Empress Ki - currently rewatching this. It’s set in the waning days of Goryeo but takes place mainly in Yuan. Still, the FL is Korean and a lot of the story revolves around one of her suitors’, a deposed Korean king, attempts to get his land back. As you can tell by my rabid posts, this is a great drama - politics, romance (I ship FL and the Yuan emperor like mad), murder, dysfunction and everything good.
Hwarang - it’s so brain dead it might as well be a brain-eating amoeba in drama form but it did give us both Park Hyung Sik and Park Seo Joon before they made it big in drama world. It’s terrible tho, stay away.
River where the Moon Rises - I have such a love/hate relationship with this drama - I loved the beginning, with our tormented assassin heroine slowly being warmed by the loyal rustic ML with his own trauma. And then Ji Soo’s bullying scandal happened and he was replaced by Na In Woo, aka the actor I like least from any country in all my close to two decades of watching dramas. I tried but I simply couldn’t and I am still mad. This said, if you don’t share my NIW allergy, it’s probably worth a watch.
The Great King’s Dream - if you liked QSD and can’t get enough of the period but want an even more traditional tale, you can do worse than this drama. I liked what I saw but this baby is 70 eps and lacks Bidam so I peaced out. Maybe I will get back to it sometime, but probably not.
Jeong Do Jeon - as you can tell by the title, centers on JDJ and the last days of Goryeo. Not really my bag (time period been done plenty in other dramas and I don’t have that much interest in JDJ) but supposed to be solid.
My Only Love Song - a short silly mess but still probably better than River (which tells the same story) because it doesn’t have NIW.
King Gwanggaeto the Great - 92 eps. I can’t!
The King Loves - delicious love triangle (that goes ALL ways), angst, prettiness, a side of bodyguard romance. What’s not to love in this Goryeo tale?
ETA: this post was so long that when I tried to tag every drama I mentioned, tumblr told me you hit the tag limit of 30 tags no more tags for you. Oh well, sorry dramas that ended up I tagged!

Sorry if you've been asked this a million times, but who are your favorite couples from the last couple years?
Congratulations Anon! This ask is AMAZING and I've never been asked it before! Shocking right?? :P
My favorite K-Drama Couples 2023- Spring 2024
NOTE: I tried to include 2022 but my list got too long :)
Moving (Bong-Seok & Hee-Soo, Joo-Won & Hye-Won & Doo-Shik & Mi-Hyun): It's very obvious by this list how much I love this drama and how many blorbo-from-my-shows it created for me. And I know I'm only reviewing couples, but I was blown away by this drama. I don't even LIKE superhero shows, but I made an exception for this one and I'm so glad I did. If you like character development and plays on good vs. evil, I highly rec this! Bong-Seok and Hee-Soo are one of my favorite couples EVER and I loved the softness and epic romance of Joo-Won & Hye-Won. (And we all know that scene at the rainy window with Bong-Seok and Hee-Soo). These couples are really EVERYTHING.
Tale of the Nine Tailed: 1938 (Lee-rang & Yeo-Hee): This is the only time I've ever watched a season two and liked it better than season one. It's probably because it featured my favorite tragic half fox Lee Rang and gave him a love line with a mermaid. The two are SO sweet together---SOB!
Tumblr media
Tell me That You Love Me (Mo-Eun & Jin-Woo): Wow. Maybe one of the softest couples I've ever seen in existence. Just watching them together was like a warm blanket in front of a cozy fireplace. I didn't like the ending choice which is a shame, but the drama was super well done and I still think people should watch it. There is also a very cute high school couple too!
The Eighth Sense (Jae-Won & Ji Hyun): not to be dramatic (just kidding!) this is the best bl kdrama I've ever seen. Literally this is it! I don't even want to tell you about the couple because I want you to just watch it! I'm dying for the writer to make another one because we need more queer media like this one!
Crash Course In Romance (Haeng-Seon & Chi-Yeol): Give me a noona romance featuring a man who has not felt warmth in 1000 years (ok not literally but this dude needs to have a warm meal made by an amazing lady!) This drama fell apart at the end (this seems to be a theme this year) but the couple makes it worth watching.
King The Land (Gu-Won & Sa-Rang): If you're looking for a low stakes, totally fluffy, rom com with TONS of chemistry (featuring MY BIAS!), King the Land is for you. Amazing skinship, kisses and just like a really fun duo to watch. Plot? Not so much but there are a billion good moments-- just look at the tags: They are full of cuteness.
Tumblr media
Love After Divorce Season 4 (Benita & Jerome): Listen, I know I'm cheating by putting a reality tv show on this list but if you're in the mood for one, I highly recommend this season (it's on Netflix). Benita and Jerome will steal your heart and they are still together! I'm rooting for them. <3
See you in my 19th Life (Ji-Eum & Seo-Ha, Da-Hoon & Cho-Won): My bias Shin Hye Sun kills it in this drama featuring past life romance. Honestly it's not fair because this drama is totally my vibe so I'm obviously going to love the mains. But when a drama gives you more than one love line and they are both interesting and lovely?? Chef's Kiss!
Dr. Slump (Jeong-Woo & Ha-Neul): This drama TOTALLY fell apart at the end and left us all very disappointed, but that's not because our leads weren't a perfect couple! They bonded over mental illness and even took their meds together. Communication: check. Comfort/Healing: check. Chemistry: check!
The Story of Park's Marriage Contract (Yun-Woo & Tae-Ha). You probably don't know this but I've been following Bae In Hyuk's career since we was in silly little web dramas. Seeing him as a lead is really wild! To be fair, he's not nearly the actor that Lee Se Young is, but do we care about that when there's a time slip romance drama featuring a historical lady who's been thrown into the future and has to fake marry someone who looks just like her de*d husband for reasons??
Tumblr media
Thank you so much for this ask - it was super fun!! Maybe I should do 2022 next?? :D

Categorizing Parent-related Trauma for male and female leads in Kdramas:
Orphans: Lee Hong-jo (Destined With You) Moon Gang-tae (It's Okay to Not be Okay) Moon Sang-tae (It's Okay to Not be Okay) Ha-ru (Extraordinary You) Naksu/Cho Yeong (Alchemy of Souls) Tak Dong-kyung (Doom at Your Service) Nam Ji-ah* (Tale of the Nine Tailed) Cheon Sa-Rang (King the Land) Jang Man-wol (Hotel del Luna) Yoon Yi-seo (100 Days My Price) Kang Young-hwa (Moon in the Day) Kim Do-ha (Moon in the Day) So Mun (The Uncanny Counter) Do Ha-na (The Uncanny Counter) Kang Tae-moo (Business Proposal) Kang Tae-ha (The Story of Park's Marriage Contract, present version) Lee Heon (The Forbidden Marriage) Do Do-hee (My Demon) Ji Eun-tak (Guardian: The Great and Lonely God) Na Bong-seon (Oh My Ghost)
Half Orphans with loving remaining parent: Eun Dan-oh (Extraordinary You) Koo Chan-sung (Hotel del Luna) Ye So-ran (The Forbidden Marriage) Nam Ha-neul (Doctor Slump) Yu Ji-hyck (Marry My Husband) Kang Hee-soo (Captivating the King) Choi Yi-jae (Death's Game)
Half Orphan + Remaining Parent is THE WORST: Jang Uk (Alchemy of Souls) Kim Do-ha (My Lovely Liar) Lee Yul (100 Days My Price) Ahn Min-hyuk (Strong Woman Bong-Soon) Seo Mok-ha (Castaway Diva) Gong Tae-seong (Sh**ting Stars) Kang Tae-ha (The Story of Park's Marriage Contract, past version) Yi In (Captivating the King) Kang Ji-won (Marry My Husband)
Parents (at least one) are THE WORST but Both Are Still Alive: Jang Shin-yu (Destined With You) Han Yi-joo (Perfect Marriage Revenge) Ko Mun-young** (It's Okay to Not be Okay) Mok Sol-hee (My Lovely Liar) Gu Won (King the Land) Crown Prince Lee Hwi/Dam-yi/Yeon-seon (The King's Affection) Do Bong-soon (Strong Woman Bong-Soon) Woo Young-woo (Extraordinary Attorney Woo)*** Jung Ji-woon (The King's Affection) Kang Bo-geol/Lee Ki-ho (Castaway Diva) Yeo Jeong-woo (Doctor Slump) Hong Hae-in (Queen of Tears)
Immortal Being that Still Somehow has Parent Issues: Myul Mang/Doom (Doom at your Service) Lee Yeon & Lee Rang (Tale of the Nine Tailed) Jeong Gu-won (My Demon)
Added trauma flavour: Parent was murdered in front of them (**Still counts if they survived the murder Parent tried to murder them Dying from seemingly incurable disease which makes their parents/guardian sad (If your parents are alive, you must pay for it by dying yourself) Adoptive parent/stepparent is THE WORST
Somehow has normal parents: Lee Jun-ho (Extraordinary Attorney Woo, Has no backstory at all. We only meet his older sister and hear nothing about his childhood.) Shin Ha-ri (Business Proposal, her family is refreshingly normal, right down to her brother being sent out to find her when she's drunk) Oh Han-byeol (Sh**ting Stars, Again, we know almost nothing about her family, only that she has twin sisters. But she doesn't appear to have childhood trauma.) Park Yeon-woo (The Story of Park's Marriage Contract, her mom being annoyed at her for something that is a crime doesn't count as bad parenting) Lee Young-joon/Sung-hyun (What's Wrong with Secretary Kim, his trauma comes from a kidnapper, his parents faced a pretty impossible situation and did their best. They clearly love their kids)
*Counting her as an orphan even though she gets her parents back after 20 years, she spent her childhood orphaned.
***This character is tricky because I understand why her mother wanted nothing to do with her, but her trying to manipulate the dad and also saying he didn't raise her properly made me so angry.

sorry if this is a hefty question, lol, but can you recommend any good k-dramas? period or otherwise is fine! i've got no preferences for tropes or anything :) as long as it's on netflix uk i'm good.
Oh, this is fun! I write blurbs about shows under the tag kalena watches kdramas and track my kdramas with MyDramaList. I love to rec stuff so I’ve definitely got some good ones for you. All of these should be on Netflix.
Stranger | This murder mystery/political thriller will keep you on your toes as a stoic prosecutor and intrepid detective join forces to discover the truth and find the mole who threatens to undermine everything in the first season. And this is one of the rare kdramas that got a second season, where our leads deal with more murder and government corruption as they test the bounds of their friendship and their own morality to in order to get results. It stars Cho Seung Woo and Bae Doona and their unlikely partnership is everything. Great ensemble cast too!
Business Proposal | This over-the-top, trope-filled romcom is so much fun! A Chaebol heiress convinces her cash-strapped best friend to pretend to be her for money to ruin a blind date that was set up by her father. But chaos ensues when the blind date turns out to be the president of the company where the cash-strapped woman works. You will never think of Samantha and Rachel the same again. When the glasses come off and the Namsan Tower looms large, prepare to fan yourself. lol And hopefully you will fall in love with our screeching Archaeopteryx too. Stars Ahn Hyo Seop and Kim Se Jeong.
Hometown Cha Cha Cha | A big-city dentist moves to a sleepy seaside town shaking up the locals’ peacefully routines, especially the town’s beloved and handsome handyman. This is a funny and healing drama. Get ready to sooth your prickly hedgehog as our leads sparring sparks all kinds of churning emotions. Besides the main romance, the townspeople all have their own love and hurt to work through as well forming a great found family community. Stars Shin Min Ah and Kim Seon Ho.
Alchemy of Souls | A period fantasy epic equal parts comedy, action, and drama has been split into two parts. The first part of 20 episodes which just aired covers two-thirds of the story and then second part of 10 episodes coming in December covers the final third. It’s about a skilled assassin who switches bodies to save herself and ends up being reluctantly recruited to train a young master in sword fighting and spells as they slowly become entangled in the conflict that is taking over the kingdom. I am so here for bickering ride-or-die couples and this show does not disappoint. I love the humor, intrigue, romance, and symbolism. The story’s not done yet but I’m fully on board. Stars Lee Jae Wook, Jung So Min, and Go Youn Jung.
Vincenzo | A Korean attorney for the Italian mafia returns to his native country for a gold heist but ends up getting caught between residents of the plaza where the gold is hidden and the conglomerate who wants to tear down the building. It’s got outrageous comedy, especially from the residents who eventually form a found family who fight for each other. It’s got drama with twists and turns, and torture and murder befitting a show about who’s more evil—the mafia or corporations. It’s got a little bit of romance, ‘art’, and all the slow-mo your heart desires. Save some bird seed for Inzaghi and pour yourself a glass of wine. Stars Song Joong Ki, Jeon Yeo Bin, and Ok Taecyeon.
Navillera | An elderly man decides to fulfill his childhood dream to study ballet. He ends up finding a teacher in a reluctant young ballerino and they form an unlikely friendship. So good. I laughed and cried. Stars Park In Wan and Song Kang.
100 Days My Prince | A Joseon-era Crown Prince loses his memory after an assassination attempt on his life and stumbles into a marriage of convenience with his childhood sweetheart, who doesn’t recognize him as an adult and is in hiding due to her family being murdered and branded traitors. The romance is funny and sweet with the right amount of action and drama to keep the story moving along. Stars Do Kyung Soo, Nam Ji Hyun, and Kim Seon Ho.
Tomorrow | A rag-tag team of grim reapers are tasked with preventing people from committing suicide. They are joined by a human in a coma trying to shorten his time asleep. Rival team leaders Ryeon and Joong Gil have a chemistry and history that will keep you wanting more. It can be dark but it’s also hopeful and funny. Stars Kim Hee Sun, Rowoon, and Lee Soo Hyuk.
Our Beloved Summer | A school’s top student and worst student end up in documentary together and fall in love. 10 years later the producers decide to a film a follow up to see where they are now, awkwardly reuniting the now ex-lovers whose fortunes have reversed with the top student struggling in her job and the worst student having become a respected artist. Sparking conflict but maybe also rekindling their love. Stars Choi Woo Shik and Kim Da Mi.
Sisyphus: The Myth | This was my first kdrama and it really captivated me. I’m a big sci-fi fantasy fan and this show had some interesting time travel concepts I’ve never seen done that way before. I particularly liked episode 11. The ending of this show was very divisive: it was like a Rorschach test because you could see it as open, bittersweet or happy depending on your view. I liked the ending and have my own views on it, but I feel like a need to caution you because I’m in the minority. Stars Cho Seung Woo and Park Hye Shin.
I hope this list a good place to start (or continue) your kdrama journey. Also, if you ever decide to get Viki, here are my top recs for there: Doom At Your Service, The Red Sleeve, Goblin, Happiness, Imitation, Sh**ting Stars, Let Me Be Your Knight, So I Married the Anti-Fan, Hot Stove League, 365: Repeat the Year.

Our Blues (2022)
Tumblr media
Ever want to spend a few months living in a small community in Jeju island? Now's your chance...
This show is huge. It's a sprawling slice of life drama with twenty episodes and maybe two dozen main and supporting characters. It's great, but it's a huge investment and probably not for kdrama newbies. It's worth watching, without a doubt.
What Worked
The actors are all good and they all brought their A-game. The writing does an excellent job of giving the whole story of these characters. Even when the focus shifts to another character, the show still gives us updates on everyone and keeps their story going, which gives the audience this a feeling like you're watching the lives of a real community.
Also, the setting was amazing, and the camera work did an excellent job of highlighting that.
What Didn't Work
There were very few missteps in the writing or the acting. My biggest complaint was not getting as much time seeing my favorite characters as I liked. It's hard to fault a show that is over twenty hours, and still leaves you wanting more in places.
I will say, that sometimes it felt like the show wrapped things up a little too neatly in a couple of arcs, but it does such a good job of putting the messiness of these relationships out there, that I was okay with that. I even welcomed it as I just needed a chance to breathe.
The Performances
There's too much to cover in a decent amount of time. I'll sum up things as best I can.
Shin Min-a as Min Seon-ah. Her character's arc was one of the highlights for me, as it gave enough context and backstory to help me understand several of the other relationships, while providing a touching and realistic portrayal of someone going through a very difficult time. It's messy, and there are no easy answers, but it's very good viewing. I also liked the times when we got to go back and check up on her later on in the show, even briefly.
Lee Byung-hun as Lee Dong-seok. I really disliked this guy at the start of the show, though he was amusing at times. But the more I learned about his story, the more I felt for him and by the end I enjoyed him. Some of that is in the writing, but the performance is what shown through. You could tell that this was a guy that has been through some stuff, and he's still trying his best to care for others in his own gruff way. Special shoutout to Ryu Hae-jun as young Lee Dong-seok. The flashbacks worked so well because of his performance.
Lee Jung-eun as Jeong Eun-hee. The actress does a good job of making this character fun and lovable while still being prickly and difficult. Her arc at the start of the show was awkward, but the portrayal felt real. Her later arc with Go Mi-ran was another highlight of the show for me.
Cha Seung-won as Choi Han-soo. He gave a great performance as the banker returning home under tough circumstances. The arc he was in was one of my least favorite, but that was because he and Lee Jung-eun did such a good job portraying a difficult relationship.
Uhm Jung-hwa as Go Mi-ran. I really liked the arc she was in. The writers did a good job of giving us all these layers to a complicated character that seems kind of shallow at first glance, but Uhm Jung-hwa was able to put all of that writing together to make Mi-ran come to life. I really liked the way her relationship with Eun-hee played out.
Han Ji-min as Lee Young-ok. I loved this character as well. I got a little frustrated with how mysterious the writers were playing things, but when we finally get her arc with her sister, it all makes sense and we get a few of the most touching scenes in the show. All of her scenes on the ocean with the haenyeos were shot beautifully and were amazing to watch, and that helped as well.
Kim Woo-bin as Park Jeong-joon. Every show needs someone who is a standup guy that you can depend on and Kim Woo-bin played that character beautifully. It's easy for a character like that to get lost in the background or to turn boring, but that never happens here, and that's great.
Kim Hye-ja as Kang Ok-dong. Her character's arc with Lee Dong-seok was well done, but also very hard to watch at times. Everything works and the story the show told us felt real and important, but I also welcomed the breaks they gave us at times.
Go Doo-shim as Hyeon Chun-hee. This was one of my favorite characters. She was a rock through most of it even though the show (and life) put her through some stuff. I had trouble with the arc with her son and grandson. It was still interesting, just rough to watch.
Roh Yoon-seo as Bang Young-joo and Bae Hyun-sung as Jung Hyun. I liked their story arc, it was sweet at times, and appropriately dramatic at others. Roh Yoon-seo was especially good and I loved watching what she did with the character. My only quibble was with the way Jung Hyun acted at times during the start of their arc (when he found out Young-joo was pregnant), but I came around as the character remained supportive throughout and it ended up being a good story arc overall.
Park Ji-hwan as Jung In-kwon and Choi Young-joon as Bang Ho-sik. I really liked the story the show told about these two. I had a big problem with Park Ji-hwan's character at the start (it didn't helped that I remembered what a terrible person he was in Black Dog), but as you learned more about them, you ended up feeling a grudging respect and by the end of the series they were both in a good place. I was never like "I can't wait to see more of them," but I still enjoyed them when they were on screen.
Everyone else. The cast is huge, and even the minor characters were given alot of care by the writers, which helped the actors bring their best to the role. I especially liked the performance of Jung Eun-hye as Lee Young-hui (Lee Young-ok's sister who has Down syndrome). You rarely see characters like that in any media, but the writers made sure and cover all of the complications around the relationship between the two sisters in a way that was thoughtful and rarely felt too preachy.
TL; DR:
This is a show that takes an investment to get through, but it pays off well. I learned after the first few episodes to just trust the show runners, and they made sure to tell a good story that was thoughtful, touching, and rewarding.

dreams in prussian blue ~ addressing hiatus and our blues ongoing (netflix) review
Show : Our Blues
Streaming Service : Netflix
Rating: 7.5/10
Wow, I can't believe that I'm writing on this platform after being on hiatus for nearly five months. I think one of the biggest reasons why I wasn't writing as much as I used to on this platform is because I haven't been able to critically engage with k-drama content as much as I used to. Much of my k-drama watching has become merely a means of passing time. I watched k-dramas on plane rides and train commutes. This is unlike the past when watching a k-drama, was a part of my daily routine. Now, back at home, with nothing to do, I've eased myself back into watching Our Blues.
Our Blues boasts a stellar cast with several household names such as Shin Min Ah ( Hometown Cha Cha Cha), Kim Woo Bin (Uncontrollably Fond and Heirs), Lee Byung Hun ( Our Sunshine), Han Ji Min (Familiar Wife and One Spring Night), and Lee Jung Eun ( Parasite). The show takes place primarily on Jeju, South Korea's largest island. For English speakers, "blue" symbolizes hardship, despair, and sadness. In the world of "Our Blues", the color is equivocal. Blue is a representation of the breathtaking ocean that contains an abundance of fresh abalone and yellow hairtails, the source of the Jejuan people's livelihood. However, the vast ocean is a poignant reminder of our vulnerability and the constant fear that one day, we will drown when our insecurities, painful memories, and responsibilities become too much to bear just like the lives that were lost to the sea.
Like any Korean melodrama, each character in "Our Blues" has an inner struggle that they must overcome on their healing journey. Dong Seok deeply resents his ailing mother for neglecting him and becoming the mistress of a man whose family abused him. Seon-Ah, Dong Seok's first love, is a divorced mother with depression, who struggles to come to terms with the fact that she might lose custody of her toddler son. Eun Hui, who has successfully built a business in seafood distribution, secretly resents her entitled best friend, Miran. Hyeon and Yeong-ju, are brilliant high schoolers forced to confront shame and disapproval when Yeong-ju becomes accidentally pregnant. Complicating this matter is the fact that their fathers, Ingwon and Hosik, loathe each other and want the young couple to abort their six-month-old fetus. Then, there's Yeong-Ok, the cheerful flirtatious new haenyo (female diver that harvests shellfish), who has managed to earn the suspicion and chagrin of her co-workers, for her risky behaviors during dives and her secretiveness for much of her life. Yeong-ok pursues a relationship with her charming sea captain, Jeong Ju, who's deeply in love with Yeong-ok but his desires for a future with Yeong-ok are at odds with the barriers she puts up around herself and her aversion towards commitment.
The writers of "Our Blues" attempt to narrate the human experience through the lens of the relationships we choose to embark on. Relationships are both the source of trauma and healing for all the characters as they navigate trials and tribulations. Each episode focuses on the relationship arc between two characters and these relationships are not limited to romantic ones, but also include friendships, sibling, parent-child, grandparent-grandchild relationships as well. This diversity aids the writers in their ability to create nuanced and fresh perspectives on contentious issues such as the stigmatization of mental illness, ableism, and domestic violence.
However, in their efforts to create an engaging anthology-like series, the writing can be uneven and not all characters get stories worthy of attention. Some episode-arcs like the ones focusing on the friendship between Mi-ran and Eun-Hui are gripping and brilliant. They passionately convey how friendships can be just as complex and meaningful as romantic relationships and that the dissolution of a friendship can feel just as piercing a romantic ones. The story of Yeong-ok and Yeong-Hui (kudos to the creators for casting someone who actually has Down Syndrome) was poignant and thoughtful in its portrayal of ableism and caregiver burden. While Yeong-ok cares deeply for her sister, the stigma she and her sister face, hold her back from showing her genuine love for her sister and forces her to act resentful.
Then, there are stories that are underwhelming. Episode arcs that failed to impress me were the first three episodes between Han-su and Eun-Hui. These episodes suffered from a slow pace that made getting through these episodes feel like an eternity. It didn't help that Han-su's episode arc felt forced and out of place, and it was difficult to empathize with his self-imposed misery. Seon-ah and Dong-Seok's episode arc also suffered from sluggishness and an absolute lack of chemistry between the two characters. Other relationships feel too superficial and simplistic. While we're offered countless scenes of a happy Jeong-jun and Yeong-ok enjoying time with each other, we never can really understand what either character sees in each other and why Jeong-jun is deeply in love with her and wants to marry her. Same goes for the teen couple, Hyeon and Yeong-ju, whose relationship lacks the realism seen in other stories. While we're offered glimpses of the initial challenges both face due to Yeong-ju's pregnancy, after their fathers reconcile and agree to support them, it seems like these two got a fairytale ending and even get married. However, there is little room offered by the writers to explore the challenges associated with their current predicament. They are still teenagers and naturally conflicts will arise between them as they are forced to prematurely grow-up, but these discussions are barely touched on in the show.
Overall, "Our Blues" greatest flaw may lie with the fact that it's bitten off more than it can chew. Regardless, the show is still a decent watch, if you're look for splashes of melancholic seaside charm to tint your weekend watching experience.
