okay yeah i'm thinking about shimada and takinoue and how they're just local dudes who still casually enjoy volleyball and go play this pickup game because their friend somehow got roped into this temporary coaching job and then all of a sudden they're inspired and nostalgic about the ridiculous passionate things these high schoolers are saying—"as long as i'm here you're invincible!"
and then one of the kids who didn't even play in that practice match shows up at shimada's store and asks him to teach him jump float serves—which shimada doesn't even remember doing, let alone remember yamaguchi. and then he does!! he just takes time out of his workdays every week to teach this kid how to serve, and for no real reason other than that yamaguchi asked so earnestly
and so shimada and takinoue go to watch the tournament bc hey i guess their friend ukai has committed to this coaching thing and shimada has been kinda working with this yamaguchi kid for like a week now so sure that's a way to spend a saturday. and then the passion is on full display on the court again, as well as the devastation and shame not only of karasuno's loss but at the brutal truth that their skills just aren't enough yet, and yeah shimada and takinoue know those feelings too
so takinoue finds himself looking up game footage of opposing teams and collecting them together for ukai and the team to study, and then splicing together clips with soundtracks of karasuno doing their coolest shit so that they can see and feel how awesome they are—we've even seen him take over practices for ukai if he cant be there
and then shimada just takes his training with yamaguchi so seriously. they have a schedule, he's set up a net in the back area behind his store, he goes through different processes yamaguchi can use to get better not only physically but mentally too. and then he's in the stands crying and calling yamaguchi "my boy"—he's running around an entire arena sweating his ass off and embarrassing himself to shove an ipad into a plastic bag and hold it over his head just so that yamaguchi hopefully sees it and doesnt get swept up by his nerves
like these guys do everything they can for the team and for those kids. they ask for donations in their shops, they take time off work to travel to tokyo, they recruit their employees and other friends to watch the matches, and they go to every game. every single game
they aren't family. they aren't relatives of anyone on the team or even anyone at the school. they didn't have to do any of that. they're just some of ukai's friends who got inspired and made a difference

Week 10 Recs: When We Were Young
The Week 10 theme was "When We Were Young," all about fics featuring young (or younger) Yeehan! This means fics ranging from their teen years to their late twenties, and all manner of vague ages in between, but the point is: they're all pre-canon. Behind the cut, you'll find the recs gathered from the Yeehan community, organized by rating and then alphabetically by title!
General Audiences
You can't take it with you by vaguely_concerned [2,304 words] Reccer comment: "its a series but it works on its own too"
Canon AU where the Shimada family and the Deadlock gang used to do business, Hanzo and Cassidy had a thing… and then Cassidy gets the ‘offer’ from Overwatch.
Teen and Up
Joy of Tournaments by Frankincense and Dunmyrrh (rawrawrawr) [21,783 words] Reccer comment: "Ok so this is also an AU and probably kind of niche, but I thought The Joy of Tournaments was really cute."
Between strenuous coursework, extracurricular activities, and trying to live up to his father’s expectations, Hanzo doesn’t have a lot of patience when it comes to his new debate partner’s laid-back attitude. While he might have joined Overwatch Academy’s Forensics team for the sake of a pretty note on his college applications, the experience becomes less about setting himself up for success and more about the unexpected bond forged between himself and Jesse McCree in the arena of competitive public speaking.
For McHanzo Week 2016, days Four ("Role Reversal") and Five ("Young Love").
Lights by vaguely_concerned [3,445 words] Reccer comment: "Young yeehan, Hanzo comes to Cole's rescue 🥺 first kiss 🥹"
Cole has never worked with a partner before.
Search Results by Tevokkia [WIP; 105,941 words] Reccer comment: "This high school AU is so sweet and a little meta."
Hanzo Shimada has run out of things to read and sets himself to browsing for recently-finished works. One story by "HighNoon" stands out, and he supposes the writing for the first few paragraphs is good enough to overlook that it's a Western AU.
Jesse McCree had just posted the last chapter of his current fic last night, and today there are a bunch of comments that could practically be chapters themselves. DoubleDragon turns out to be every writer's wet dream, and the comments section of his works are soon looking like a bunch of chat threads.
But what happens when HighNoon doesn't have anything left for DoubleDragon to read?
Mature
Lifelines by Chopsticks [11,688 words]
In theory, McCree thought it an easy enough job: go undercover, meet the yakuza informant, leave a convincing trail of a love affair for eyes that track. Nothing to it. Until said informant had to go and make him feel something real. For far too many years.
Explicit
Black Hole Sun by t_pock [4,256 words]
For some reason he hasn’t yet tossed his hand and found somewhere less foul to cut a deal. Something has him planted with his wingtips on the filthy floor instead of calling his chauffeur to return him to his hotel and ordering one of his lieutenants to burn this suit.   It may or may not be the hand between his legs.   Or, the Shimada scion encounters an unknown agent.
The Journalist and the Scion by ChillieBean [9,498 words]
“This is the target.”
A tablet is dropped in front of Cole and he turns it around, shifting his cigar from one side of his mouth to the other with his tongue. He speed reads the brief, the usual pre-mission background, but his jaw hangs on one word.
“Shimada,” Cole breathes, taking his cigar between his knuckles before it drops in his lap. “Finally making a move?”
“Sure are,” Gabe answers, grinning as he leans back in his chair.
Lighting One Candle with Another Candle by motorghost [6,409 words] Reccer 1 comment: "I must admit it's rare for me to like young Yeehan stories, but Lighting One Candle with Another Candle by Motorghost is the only exception."
Reccer 2 comment: "A favorite smut fic that introduced me to this great writer."
It's winter in Hanamura. Cole Cassidy is on his first away mission. Shimada Hanzo is first son of the man Blackwatch is doing business with. Gabriel Reyes is going to get mad.
Memento by egoblow [5,128 words]
Get in. Get out. Seduce and distract then retrieve the intel. It seems simple enough. Easy. Amateur stuff really. Gabe had whored him out enough times in the name of Blackwatch that Jesse considers himself the master of honeypot missions.
Not that Jesse minds. Not one bit. He wouldn't agree to it if he did. The rush that comes with seducing some of the most powerful people on the planet sends such a thrill through his body that no aphrodisiac can match. He lets his gaze linger on his target a while longer and decides that tonight's target is the best yet.
---
Blackwatch!McCree seduces Scion!Hanzo in a honeypot scheme.
Not That I'm Complaining by robocryptid [28,981 words] Reccer 1 comment: "Not That I'm Complaining of course"
Reccer 2 comment: "no young Yeehan list is complete without Not That I'm Complaining"
An AU in which both Shimadas join Blackwatch, and Cole Cassidy falls in love dick first. Approximately 50/50 porn to feelings.
Scalpel or Bullet by robocryptid [Series; 14,374 words] Reccer comment: "if scion hanzo and blackwatch cole are fair game, then you have to include this steamy series"
Scion Hanzo meets Blackwatch Cassidy. That's pretty much the whole story.
Throwing Stones at the Stars by robocryptid [WIP; 92,329 words] Reccer 1 comment: "im sorry but i HAVE to rec throwing stones at the stars bc it gave me big brainworms"
Reccer 2 comment: "this is THE young McHanzo/Yeehan fic for me"
Reccer 3 comment: "loved the chemistry and the plot and the side characters/ocs. the asking questions scene in chapter 3 was very memorable. unrelated but i think this author predicted cassidy's new name??"
Despite Hanzo's competence, the Shimadas chose to hire a new bodyguard for the heirs. The elders found the one they wanted: an American mercenary so deadly some called him a demon. He was remarkably skilled, insolent, and above all mysterious. Genji, of course, liked him right away, but Hanzo had his doubts.
---
And that's a wrap on all our young(er) Yeehan fics! Thank you so much to everyone who submitted a fic rec. If you happen to find a fic you love using this rec list, be sure to leave the author kudos and a comment! Even "I found this fic because someone recced it" is a lovely thing to say.
Come back next time for Week 11: "He's a Magic Man," for all your mystical, magical, fantastical AUs.
In the meantime, you can also check out the Week 9 recs here, or check the full list of past and future themes here.

META   + grief ( muse of choice! )
When Asa accepted the task of becoming the Shimadas' swordsmaster, she never imagined that she would come to view Genji and Hanzo as if they were her own sons - and when she learned of what the elders had told Hanzo to do, her heart had shattered.
She didn't know that Genji had survived the attack, and she grieved him greatly for years. She still does even now. Having been the one to train the brothers, she feels like she has some of his blood on her hands - even if she knows that she can't control what they do with the skills she taught them.
Though she doesn't know for certain if Hanzo is dead or alive, with neither brother having revealed themselves to her since that night, she mourns his disappearance all the same. Though she can't bear to think about what he did to his brother, she knows that the elders had pushed him into action and that - wherever he is - his regret is probably eating away at him.

reisouya gamers AU
Rei being the assistant manager to financial department manager Souya, working closely with him and looking out for his boss even on off-hours. He finds out Souya can be a bit of an air-head, but is genuinely nice and even makes extra inarizushi during lunch for Rei because he liked them that one time the whole staff went to a sushi restaurant. But Rei isn't so sure about pursuing his crush on the other man, because he sees Souya being close with the engineering and logistics department managers (Dobashi and Shimada). There was also that one scene of Souya drunk in a makeout session with the other department manager holding his waist tightly to push him against their front. What could Rei offer, in his youth and inexperience?
Outside of work, Rei and Souya meet up in an online MMO, without either of them knowing the other's true identity. Rei found Souya as a beginner and helped him around. He later finds out Souya is actually a day-one veteran who quit the game a long time ago but is getting used to the new updates and meta. Nevertheless, the two hit it off with their similar personalities and Souya catches himself getting fond of the other player. Meanwhile, Rei doesn't want to admit it but the other's personality makes him think of a more verbal and teasing version of his boss (and crush) and guiltily maintains the image in his head.
After all, what are the odds that your in-game crush is also your real-life boss?
Rei only discovered the truth when, during a time that he had to leave papers at Souya's desk by himself, one of the (smaller) windows opened was a screenshot of their most recent raid, showing the exact numbers of the damage his own character dealt. He now wondered whether it was a sign that Souya already knew Rei was his in-game friend or was fate really playing jokes again.
// Souya is so me, online classes, taking notes while GW runs in the bg on auto
// I'm thinking the MMO they're playing is either RO or FF (I still really love RO even if the only players I know are all older than me haha)

Count von Count counting humans to the End! Or numbers crunching in EP5.
Let's take a look at how they count people/human on the island.
First, after they added Erika and the rest of the cousins joined 'Battler' counts the number of human. He specifically uses his personal pronoun with inverted commas- 'I' or 'ore' in Japanese- and sees from his piece's eyes, apparently.
"The number of humans on this island has returned to 18… `I' glanced around at the humans in the parlor."
---after listing every character in the parlor---
"This is everyone. The true number of people on the island at the moment..."
It's unconvient for him that Bernkastel control piece Battler during this time and Meta-Battler doesn't know about the difference between person and human. Now then, what I want to approach?
Claim: "Battler is not the detective/is an accomplice. Thus, he is an unreliable character. Therefore, he could see Shannon and Kanon together."
This is probably the common fan explanation and Battler also admitted it with red truth. However, it's intriguing that he uses his possesiv pronoun with inverted commas, again.
"Furudo Erika is the detective, and the `me' in this game isn't one."
It's hard to track what character was actually refered to, because Battler effectively represent more different versions of himself (Piece, Fantasy and Meta). It it also true for other characters like Beato, Maria or Erika.
Meta Battler didn't make this distinction anymore in further red truths.
Example: "The fact that I claimed to have seen Grandfather is prooooooooooooff!!!"
Oof, does this mean we can bend Battler's truths to the point that he, his Meta Version, objectively saw Kinzo on the game board? Yes, we might have different versions of red truth, but this might be a real mind f***! But let's be fair and don't overcomplicate things.
"Does it go against the rules of Beato's game?" "No, it does not. Lambdadelta-sama actually does understand the rules of Milady's game very well. …However…"
So it might be true that Meta Battler just counted everyone in the parlor, why exactly did he need explicitely view from his very piece's eyes (in other words: control his piece Battler) in this moment instead of not just puts him self in piece Battler's shoes? Imo, it's unnecessary and I thought the fan explanation lack this specific detail (and it's a re-telling, the story was almost finished) . It might be true that piece Battler's pov might be unreliable, but it's debateable that we are reading from piece Battler's eyes in the parlor scene. The manga give us the chance to believe "it's from Battler's perspective" theory. So, can we trust Erika's deduction? No, because she was a schemer.
Meta Battler counts 18 humans. Piece Battler doesn't count. Erika cannot be trusted.
We have another counting in this game.
Tumblr media
Let's see whether Erika knows the true number or not. At least she knows about Shannon and Kanon.
Sidenote: The manga states that Erika know about Kanon, but it is shown she doesn't see him in the parlor.
Tumblr media
In the chapter Ten Wedges to Pierce Witches Erika suspects that 13 lives will be taken and drifts in a speech about mystery books.
"As far as I know, the mystery novel with the most dead people in a serial murder was 'And then there were none' by Agatha Christie, which had 10 deaths. In the realm of Japanese mysteries, it's probably 'The Tokyo Zodiac Murders' by Shimada Souji. Though there were less than 10 deaths in that one."
"And if everyone on this island is killed... That would make it a historical achievement in the world of serial murder mysteries. With even more deaths than the longest murder mystery in the world and the longest one in Japan put together, don't you see?! Hey, didn't you know? Everyone?"
It's an important clue that Erika is indeed aware of the lowest number of people on the island. "What does this mean?" It means that the manga hasn't an excuse to explain it at all and Erika knows of both (without really showing it) - Erika would mislead the cast because she intentionally ignore the "one missing person" and claims that Natsuhi is the murderer after Hideyoshi's death. In the other hand, Erika join with the cast 4 times (parlor after the first Twilight, Kinzo's study, the closed guest room, the parlor after the 2nd Twilight) and she doesn't notice that 1 is always missing? The manga seems not notice this but the canon explanation got a self-induced plothole because Erika apparently knows about Shannon and Kanon but doesn't noticed that one is always missing. Strange! In that case, she shows her unreliable narration on a silver plate. To the numbers:
'And then there were none' has 10 deaths (9 murders and 1 suicide in the classic version).
'The Tokyo Zodiac Murders' has 7 deaths (6 murders and 1 suicide).
(I don't know 'Non-serial Murders''s plot, it is stated it has the same number of people as in 'The Tokyo Zodiac Murders').
This makes 18 deaths. Therefore, Erika knows at least Shannon OR Kanon if she counts Kinzo, too. I already mentioned it in my Erikatrice theory: The red key "The window wasn't opened once after the rain started" means Erika knew atleast about an open window and that Natsuhi was lying about Kinzo's dissapearance.
"Rudolf. The window was locked, right?" "...Yeah. That's why I smashed the glass." "The other windows are all locked as well. They're built so that you can't lock them from the outside...!"
Erika knows all the people, including Kinzo.
Last words: Obviously, the number of people is clear, but not the number of humans. I showed that the manga hurt itself by showing Erika's deduction which would explain Battler's false POV but twisted her own POV. Sometimes, I wish the manga wouldn't added these extra.

[ META ] + identity for Genji!
meta prompt. | accepting!
Tumblr media
IDENTITY ― is not something that was easily attainable for Genji. For a time, he held none because he was stuck in a limbo between two. The Sparrow had many clashing properties to his person, a human heart yet, a body made out of metal. Every single time a person came along to tell him who he was and what exactly he should be, it would add to the turmoil of his own views upon himself.
Before meeting Zenyatta ( Blackwatch & before the end of OW ), his thoughts on this was very messy. To him, he was the epitome of an abomination. Neither here nor there. A mix of everything.
While everyone assigned him the identity of an omnic or a human, he viewed himself as no one, like a shadow that lurked in the walls, a monster that should not exist but was stitched back together gruesomely.
Yet, after following Zenyatta's guidance, the word "identity" did not mean so much to him anymore. He viewed himself as more of a human. But ultimately, what mattered the most was that he was just as he is.
Him.
Genji Shimada. That was his identity, uniquely his and his alone.

Okay, I am totally digging your idea of the shimada dragons being eldritch horrors. How do they work besides being total agents of destruction? Can they converse with their hosts? Do they feel affection for them? Pls tell me ur headcanons. And hanzo having two dragons, oh boy. Is this still sticking with canon or is it veering off to au territory where the clan uses hanzo as a weapon? If we stick w/ the original timeline, obvs hanzo is still alive and kicking. But hes already nearing forty...
HELLO MY NEW FAVORITE PERSON PULL UPA CHAIR. YOU’RE LOOKING LOVELY, WOULD YOU LIKE  A DRINK?
So, I tried to explain some of thisin a fic about Genji getting his dragon, but it’s not done because it’s beingsuper uncooperative. Imagine that, Genji being uncooperative. Anyway.
The whole exercise was essentiallyme and my friend trying to figure out how the fuck blizzard gets off havingliteral magic dragons in their (admittedly al-dente) sci-fi universe, and yeah,I’m trying to make it not directly conflict with canon or the current timeline.Luckily canon is pretty vague about a lot, so I have a big sandbox to play in.If it becomes explicit lore that they’re literally magic, I invite Chu orKaplan to fight me behind the nearest Denny’s. I’m pretty sure I can take them, what I lack in height I make up for in sheer rage.
So, I looked at the dragons, andbeing a terrible person who loves sad things, my first thought was “Those definitelygive you cancer. That’s some high energy bullshit. These Shimada guys are turbofucked.” Next question, what the fuck do weird glowing cancer snakes care abouta random subset of the Japanese population? Well there’s something, probablygenetic because it’s only just them, about them that’s of interest, there hasto be.
Enter, two of my favorite things, multiverse and aliens! This shows up a little bit in the Hellboy comics, Tanis, and The City at the End of Time(which should have been so much better than it was). Also, uh, cough, a fandomthat I spent waaay to much time in despite the many, many problems. Anyway, ifthe dragons aren’t from this universe and need some kind of conduit to comehere for Dragon Reasons, then the Shimada clan could be that conduit. Eitherit’s something about their genetics or something about the place they’re allliving, but something about these people made them more attuned to whateverwavelength the dragons are on. So I think the Shimadas themselves representthin spots between their universe and ours, with the Well being the crossoverpoint where it’s easier for the dragon and the host to entangle, and the entanglementlasts until the host dies. (Sidebar: That all grew out of the antenna model forontological dualism) (Sidebar: I think they’re only dragons because the ancientShimadas expected dragons so that’s what they got. They could be anything, and theyinhabit more than just 3-space. This is kind of the vibe I’m thinking of. If they’d shown up in medieval europe, they’d probably look like angels or saints.) It seemed weird to me that they’re just hereto kill. They could be eating people, or some facet of people (heat, electricalimpulses in the nervous system, etc.) but that seems super inefficient. There’senergy everywhere here, once the meat people let you in, why would you let thembe your gatekeepers? But that got me thinking, what if they’re here to getsomething and the Shimadas are acting as an antenna or foothold for them? Is theirkilling for the Shimadas more of a side effect? If they do need the Shimadas tobe alive, then it makes sense they would protect them.
Circling back to multiverse for amoment, what if their universe is dying, undergoing its heat death?  They seem to be beings made of energy, atleast partially, (pulling from CatEoT, there were beings there whose minds transcendedmaterial form and were fucked whenthe heat death began.) Point of interest, there are supervoids in our universethat just seems weird. Fun fact, Earthis in the largest supervoid known to science, the KBC Void. What if the dragonsare actually here to strip mine energy and entropy and take it back to theiruniverse to keep it alive longer? A heat death is just the end of alldifference in energy levels, so if they’re stealing more energy from here tomaintain differentials to keep going, that would be a reason for them to behere that isn’t a weird crush on the Shimada clan.
Okay, but, uh, they’re killing thehosts. They give them cell-degrading radiation exposure when they manifest, becausethe Shimada doing the summoning is at ground zero for a second, roasting alive.Well, I don’t think the dragons actually grok that point! They’re beings madeof energy, and I think they mostly view the Shimadas as a web of heat and electricalimpulse and chemical activity, but I think very few of them understand them asconscious creatures because the way they think is so divergent. It’s like wonderingif your car has feelings. It’s real damn complicated, but is it thatcomplicated? Maybe, but probably not. So, like when your car squeals and you dosomething to fix it, that’s kind of like what the dragons are doing when themantra is repeated. But in using your car, you are damaging it through wear andtear, and that’s what the dragons are doing through repeated summoning. TheShimadas understand this as a kind of tit-for-tat, obviously the spirits wouldwant something so their lives must be it. And if this all started in prehistory youcan’t really blame them, when the conceptual framework for talking about the multiverse scientifically is so recent.
I don’t think they communicatelike humans do, through body language, touch, and vibrating the air withspecialized organs. I think they communicate feeling and intent more directly, probablywith energetic impulses. So, the mantras that the Shimadas recite (which varyfrom person to person) act as a sort of trigger or alert. Thinking about specific thingsexcites parts of the brain in a specific way, and there is some low levelelectric current involved. If the dragons learn to recognize that, kind of inthe way we recognize our phones have low battery because the meter changes, then they manifest and attack to protect their host. If the host dies theylose their foothold in this universe, so they do what they can to keep them alive.I don’t think the Shimadas grok that this is a side effect, I think theygenuinely believe them to be spirits. (My understanding is that a thought likethat wouldn’t be out of line with Shinto. A very devout Christian would believein angelic interference, for instance.) I do think the dragons recognize otherhosts, and try not to attack them generally if they’re in the line of fire, andthat the dragons, after a while, learn to pick out what their host thinks of asfoes. So, Genji’s dragon wouldn’t attack a friend (let’s say McCree is standingbeside him, providing covering fire) because it’s learned that the kind ofattention Genji is paying McCree is good attention, but will attack the guyjust as close trying to stab Genji, because that’s bad attention. It does takea while for that to set in, and some dragons are less discerning than others.
They can, however, learn to ‘talk’.They mostly just don’t bother. It’s a pain exciting the aural nerves in theright way, learning what the right way is, and they usually misinterpretfeelings when shared directly and dump a bunch of cortisol and freak out. Imaginetrying to learn to talk to your cat. (Spoilers for a fic I may never finish, Ithink Genji’s does talk to him. I think Genji has a very close relationshipwith his dragon, and that is basically unheard of. He’s a natural adorcist andlearned more from his dragon that the clan had in hundreds of years. Genji’sdragon is enamored with him, and Genji with her. It’s part of why he’s stillalive, she shielded him from a lot of the damage Hanzo’s dragons would havedone and shunted a lot energy away from his vitals because she learned from himwhat to protect. Genji would probably have just been burnt to a crisp if she’donly been on the offensive. She also helps soothe some of the phantom pain bypulling strings in his nervous system.)
(Okay, this section is pretty dark.)
Hanzo’s dragons think there’ssomething wrong with him. He keeps hunting down other hosts, making it harderto do their work, and keeps getting damaged. I don’t think Hanzo thinks hedeserves to do the honorable thing and kill himself directly, but I do thinkonce or twice he’s thrown down his weapons to let someone kill him, right afterGenji. His dragons won’t let it happen, they come on their own and attackeverything around him. They do not trust his judgement, and they’re harder forhim to summon and sometimes come when he doesn’t want. They don’t understandthe family politics that when into attacking Genji and then attacking the others, they think he’s just a malfunctioning machine they have to put up with.
(Uh, that’s over)
So, with two dragons, I do think theclan wanted him to be their weapon. I think, in the lull after the Crisis, there had been a kind of status quo with the various yakuza clans and Sojirowas content to maintain it. Others, now that they had a WMD in their pockets, wantedto expand territory and influence. Sojiro was like “HARD FUCKING PASS” and as long as he wasalive, he prevented Hanzo from going on more assassinations than necessary, and kepthim to more administrative things, even if that meant doing more work withdragons himself and dying faster. (Sidebar, I think the assassination thing iskind of a secret. Only people in the know would ask, and they don’t take money, they take favors. Money can be tracked. Favors can’t. Only the family is involved at any stage of planning orexecution. The client families and client organizations and random mooks haveno idea, because the rest of the clan’s business is grey market brokering or smuggling.) That’s also part of the reason the elders were so adamant Genji getin line, because if Hanzo died young they needed him to take charge. Sojirokind of let Genji be a useless fuckboy because it would keep Hanzo safer if hewas the only viable heir. It broke his heart to do it, because it ruined hisrelationship with Hanzo and the brothers’ relationship with each other, but hewasn’t going to bury Hanzo. Hanzo never puts it together, he thinks his dadjust liked Genji better and he wasn’t a good enough leader to bring him in line. Genji didn’t fuckingcare, because he was a spoiled brat, but kind of kens the truth in Nepal afterhaving to sit down and actually sort through his life and his choices.
So, because Hanzo has fuckeddirectly off, he’s done less damage to himself with the dragons than he wouldhave otherwise, but he’s still getting sick. (For a long time, it was a realworry of Genji’s that Hanzo would die before he could kill him. And then, whenGenji forgave him, that’d it’d be too late.) Nobody in the clan actually doesanything to fucking TREAT the cancer, because they think it’s part of somemagic bargain. The dragons do not fucking care if you get chemo, Genji knows asmuch. So, Hanzo’s bought himself some time by running away (and killing otherShimadas by being sneaky rather than dragon fights when he can, since hisdragons are flaky, per the dark paragraph.) If Genji can bring Hanzo to Dr.Ziegler, she can absolutely get it under control. (He’s probably got someconcerning nodules, but not full blown malignant tumors in all of his him.) Hermethodologies could absolutely target and destroy cancerous cells and repair thedamage, if Hanzo will accept the treatment. So he’s not doomed, if he doesn’twant to be. (He’s trying to race liver failure and cancer on his own though, soGenji needs to get the lead out if he’s gonna put out this tire fire.)
I think I answered most of yourquestions? I love talking about this, so if you weren’t clear I’m happy toelaborate! Please forgive any spelling/grammar fuck ups, I wrote this all downkind of stream of consciousness.

everyday i get closer to ukai’s age in the manga and honestly i don’t think it’s discussed enough how incredible it is that at age 26 he managed to take this ragtag team to nationals in his first year of being a coach with no prior formal coaching experience. i would be remiss if i didn’t also mention takeda’s role in this too because it was he who rekindled the nekoma/karasuno connection which led to connecting karasuno to the greater fukurodani network of teams (takeda just deserves his own post tbh. it’s been years but i still get chills reading his chemical reaction speech whenever i reread. literature teachers really just hit different huh)
but i want to talk about ukai keishin, age 26, and what this really means. i first read hq when i was 19. i remember seeing the words ukai keishin age 26 and fully regarding him as an Adult™ lmao but as someone who’s still in school, who still doesn’t have an established ~career~ and have only worked a few different jobs i can say that at age 26 you are an amalgamation of relatively few life experiences still trying to figure it out. at 26, you’re at a point in your life where you’ve matured in a lot of ways but are still incredibly inexperienced. you’re at a point when you can look back nostalgically and appreciate the relative simplicity of your high school years but can still easily remember what it was like
Tumblr media
(ch 26)
this particular perspective you have at 26 is a part of why i think ukai was able to take karasuno to nationals despite his lack of coaching experience. it’s not easy to make those tough coaching decisions and it takes a lot of maturity and confidence to make these calls. especially when ukai can still easily empathize with how the players feel, putting aside these personal feelings takes a lot of maturity on his part. yet he knows firsthand the frustration of not being able to play, practicing for hours all for the chance for even one second to stand on court. he takes risks by letting yamaguchi, kinoshita, ennoshita get their chance. whether they fail or succeed, these in-game experiences eventually add up and they become better players because of these chances
a lot has been said already about suga’s maturity in that scene where he confronts ukai to not consider his status as a third-year when deciding their official starting lineup, but now i’m really seeing it from ukai’s perspective and appreciating how hard of a decision it was for him to make as well. to simultaneously know what the best strategical decision is while feeling deeply in your heart the player’s perspective because you can still remember exactly what it was like at the receiving end of such decisions is difficult to navigate. this is especially hard in-game when the unpredictability of events requires you to make split-second decisions
Tumblr media
i also want to talk about how tough it was for him to even just come back to the gym. this man is achingly sentimental. he resisted takeda’s pleas to take on the coach position so many times because of his nostalgia, his desire to keep his high school volleyball memories as they are and not wanting to replace them with anything.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(ch 19)
the only thing that works to bring him back is the mention of nekoma. the only thing that makes him stay permanently as a coach is the re-ignition of the karaneko rivalry and the chance to make their fated match at nationals happen. ukai cherishes his high school volleyball memories and doesn’t want to tarnish this rose-colored view of his youth, but he takes the risk anyway to come back as a coach in order to realize a dream that’s been passed on through the decades. it’s really so poetic that in taking this risk he, a high school bench warmer, was able to see greater heights he wasn’t able to reach before.
washijou’s development understandably garners a lot more discussion because he has a more clearly defined character arc, which is also really well-written and i personally enjoyed (there are many who don’t like him as a character which is valid). but ukai is really underrated to me especially when you consider his context and what he managed to achieve despite it

This scene always get me. When the scaredy student took up his spear and learned to fight his battle. That silent cheer of the mentor to his student. His pride and happiness for his student's success and new found confidence. This was Yamaguchi and Shimada's volleyball moment.

aaahh i'm pretty positive this page wasn't animated but it makes me so happyyyy. sometimes i think about how yamaguchi is the only first year who didn't end up going to the december training camps, and how, even though we know he has occasional confidence issues, we never see him getting down about being the only one still at karasuno for the week. instead (just like when he took the initiative to learn jump floats in the first place so that he could have chance to be on the court despite being the only first year who isn't a starter), he just buckles down in determination and continues on with his routine of serve practice with shimada. he's seen how hard everyone is working, and how their skill is above his and he only sees it as inspiration!!
and aah i LOVE how we not only get to see him say "one more?" here (which, this might just be me, but is a line i associate heavily with hinata and hinata's insane drive/determination) but the addition of shimada saying "when you say 'just one more,' you never mean just one!" it's a pattern!!! yamaguchi has had this drive and determination the whole time!!

ya i know i feel like the shimada clan had some relation with talon.  i mean it explains how hanzo is familiar with the members.  the shimada obviously supplied talon with guns and took on assassinations for them as well.   in return the clan got profits and gain influence in other areas of the world.  plus offered intel and help with manufacturing their illegal substance trade.   prolly why talon wants to restore the shimada clan.   to have that big of power up and running again is good for their goals.   plus they know how hanzo works , talon knows hanzo get shit done one way or another.

Week 3 Recs: Right on Time
This week's Yeehan recs were all modern/contemporary AUs. Those fics set in our world and time (or roughly thereabouts) that still include the OTP. Check out the recs gathered from the Yeehan community below, organized by rating then alphabetically by title.
Not Rated
Rootbound by wyntera [WIP; 67,484 words] Reccer comment: "Flower shop au bc yes"
Every plant is unique. They need love and care in the right environment to grow. Give them what they need, and they will flourish.
McCree and Hanzo are a lot like plants. Big, stubborn, root bound plants.
General Audiences
Conflict of Interest by orphan_account [28,222 words] Reccer comment: "Superhero au with a Lois Lane type beat"
“You know, I’ve been wanting to get an interview with you,” Jesse says as Hanzo happens upon another malfunctioning elevator shaft. How is it at all likely that more than one elevator is out of service? When Hanzo levels Jesse with a hard glare, the man keeps talking.   “I’m a reporter.”
Or, the one where Hazno and Genji fight crime, Jesse is a cigar-smoking Lois Lane, and everyone else wonders why they’ve been trapped in a bad comic book.
Teen and Up
Climbing the Walls by robocryptid [22,669 words] Reccer comment: "a social-distancing yeehan fic"
Hanzo and Cole are neighbors who have never met until social distancing forces them to stay in their homes. Neither can see the other's face, but that doesn't stop them from getting to know each other.
Da Capo al Signo by midgetnazgul & temporalSilence [75,482 words] Reccer comment: "an incredibly moving fic featuring musician Hanzo and rancher Cassidy falling in loooove"
In music, da capo al signo tells the performer to start over until they see the sign to move on. Life has its movements, too. Even when we must begin again, signs will appear to remind us that just because we feel we are repeating ourselves, we will not necessarily end in the same terrible place we were before.
It's 2018 and Jesse and Hanzo are both living in Tucson, AZ on second chances. Hanzo is on the cusp of recognition as a musician after his life in Japan is run aground by a devastating accident, and Jesse has chiseled out a life of purpose and achievement after a rough childhood. Together, they will come to understand how misfortune and loneliness can end, giving gifts they would never have found any other way.
Flowers for Assholes by HappyLeech [10,552 words]
Hanzo just wants to close up shop for the night. Jesse just wants to tell his boss where to stick it and quit his job.
Of the Pickle Persuasion by Byacolate and mywordsflyup [14,813 words] Reccer comment: "My favorite food truck au"
Hanzo is convinced that his bento wagon is locked in a corporate deathmatch with the taco truck down the street. Genji just wants to flirt with the produce vendor.
Searching for Game... by AsheRhyder [10,792 words] Reccer comment: "Cute, cute, cute, with fun meta jokes about the game, characters, and community."
Genji wants Cassidy to play the new game he helped develop: Overwatch.
Cassidy just wants his hot upstairs neighbor to stop throwing food at him every time he says "hello".
Shimada Dreams of Sushi by delicaterosebud [24,344 words] Reccer comment: "It's silly, but has the right amount of drama, angst and extremely uncomfortable situations."
As the owner of a mediocre taco shack with tanking reviews and multiple health violations, the last thing that Jesse McCree needs is competition - competition, specifically, from a sushi bar so popular that it drove every other restaurant in the neighborhood out of business.
From the very day that Shimada sushi opened its doors, Jesse had hated that restaurant with a burning passion. ...So how does he end up working for the man who runs it?
To the Great Deep He Goes by westerncibee [53,288 words] Reccer comment: "its been a hot second since ive read this but i remember enjoying this one"
Hanzo accompanies Genji to their new college, and of course Genji would want to room with his friend--leaving Hanzo to deal with a god-forsaken cowboy whose only goal that year was to be Hanzo's friend. And as the cowboy said, "You're stuck with me for the rest of the year." - and a lot can happen in a year.
Mature
The Cooking Cowboy by SadakoTetsuwan [WIP; 79,662 words]
It had started simple—he just needed a good recipe for matcha cake to surprise Genji on his birthday, and so he’d started clicking around for tutorials on YouTube.
But now Hanzo is in deep, and is officially part of ‘The Chuckwagon’; the mostly middle-aged, mostly female fan following of YouTube cooking sensation Jesse McCree, the Cooking Cowboy.
How had his life come to this?
Explicit
School Nights by rebeccastceir [WIP; 45,484 words] Reccer comment: "School teacher au and romance~"
Jesse got so flustered he forgot what he was doing and stuck his hand out. “Jesse. McCree. Jesse McCree. I’m -”
“Hana’s teacher, of course,” Hanzo smiled at him, shaking hands, holding on for a split second longer than necessary. He held his head cocked down, almost shy, but kept looking up from under his long lashes, pretty lips teasing in a grin, and ohhh, Jesse was in so much trouble he ached with it.
“Sorry. You knew that,” Jesse mumbled. Was he red? He felt like he was flaming red. __________
It's the fluffiest, smuttiest, romcom-iest, parent-teacher au we all need and deserve
Shear Bliss by wyntera [12,725 words] Reccer comment: "I think about the way Hanzo's hair is described in this fic all the time"
Sometimes you can't help falling for a handsome face...even if they are holding very sharp objects near your head.
And that's a wrap on Week 3! Thank you to everyone who sent in a recommendation! Keep an eye out for next week's theme: "The Rivalmance," or fics all about the rivals to lovers, enemies to lovers, competitive assholes to lovers of it all.
In the meantime, you can also check out the Week 2 recs here or see the list of past and future themes here!

people that turn genji and hanzo into stepbrothers in their fanfics to make it “more okay” are fucking weird. you can’t justify incest. it’s gross either way, accept it and ship it that way or don’t touch it at all. move on, and find some other ship ✨

You know, when you take Sonic Arrow out of context of the game mechanics it’s like: Well, how does it work exactly?
Does Hanzo actually pull from the Dragons’ power?
One of my fave hcs I see every once in a while in fics is that he’s got special contacts that work with them
but that most recent art piece I reblogged reminded me that Lone Wolf/Okami has random metal bits on both side of the head for no reason
Tumblr media
so I’m like... Sonar reception? 👀 Granted that- even if they were, there’s still gotta be a way for Hanzo to see it.
