GoT fandom stop saying masculine and feminine with regards to female characters when you actually mean active vs passive challenge

#the extreme misogyny in the fandom oh my gods #jonsas are so guilty of calling daenerys and arya masculine #arya is a tomboy she's not masculine #and i don't mean this to invalidate any enbys or masc girls etc who identify with arya #i just mean that while she scoffs at dresses initially i think it's partly because sansa and jeyne kept telling her she was ugly #she can appreciate pretty things like the acorn dress etc #i just think she believes she's not pretty enough for girly things #even though she's beautiful like lyanna #and dany literally goes through a pregnancy and birth #she likes fine things and sweet smells and all the stereotypical girly things #both of them are just ACTIVE #they make the best of their situations and become highly skilled and respected as a result #they make strides towards their own freedoms #it doesn't make them masculine #and sansa being sweet and passive to survive doesn't make her less of anything either #or more worthy to sansa stans just because she performs femininity well #all are girls and all have traumas enacted upon them because of it #i am so sick of sansa stans specifically downplaying dany and arya's traumas (including ENSLAVEMENT!!!)#just because they think of them as Strong Female Characters™ instead of complex girls who fight tooth and nail for what they have #and ALSO have compassion and kindness for smallfolk/slaves #i would love to know when sansa does the same because i can't think of any off the top of my head #i can recall her singing to keep the women calm but i don't remember much else

hmmmmm ketil anime backstory bad

#it adds nothing to the story and interferes with his character progression imo #the point of ketil is that nothing that bad has happened to him until now. he's done everything right and it's always worked for him #and when it goes wrong he completely breaks down and makes all the worst decisions for everyone around him #also it ruins the conversation between sverkel and arnheid :( which is so good and understated in the manga #all he says to her is 'it's your decision' and 'i wish i could help.' manga!sverkel genuinely feels for arnheid. she's a real person to him #but anime!sverkel bringing up ketil's sad backstory when arnheid is going through all that just feels super insensitive #obviously ketil has nothing to do with arnheid losing her family and he didn't enslave her himself #which imo is part of why arnheid has been able to accept being with him! she knows she could have ended up with someone much worse #but like. he owns her. she has to devote her life to him whether she wants to or not.#it feels super gross for another character (and the story in general) to direct her/our sympathy onto ketil in that moment #her son was murdered so that she would be more desirable to men like him! this scene should not be about ketil's pain!#(also the line about why hjalti was killed was conspicuously absent from the anime which takes some of the teeth out of the whole storyline #fandom musings #vinland saga

Jinling Shengmu is so cool I’d love to see her show up more as Princess Iron Fan’s mom. And I guess Huaguang since he married Princess Iron Fan. I was so surprised to learn there’s a small temple out there where she’s worshipped alongside him since the end of the Ming dynasty.

I just wrapped up Journey to the South but I'll be honest it was just... way too boring. It is supposed to be after the Journey to the West but legit there was never really a connection to the story besides Wukong being in the first chapter and being the one to take down Huaguang in the last chapter. Otherwise, it is kind of a rinse-and-repeat plot with no real development because Huaguang keeps making more mistakes. I even thought that Princess Iron Fan in this verse was just different as well because she didn't have the Banana Leaf Fan she had like literally Iron Fan and acted like she never had a husband or son, just always living with her brother and mother.

If we are ever to get Nanyouji media they best just make it about Wukong and his kids fighting Huaguang because literally, the only interesting story line I enjoyed was him going to the demon city to save his demon mother and trying to cure her of her desire to eat humans. But that is only at the end!

But I wasn't aware of the temple which is really cool! If you have a temple or local for the temple please let me know!

Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros is literal hot garbage and I will die on this hill.

I think what i really love about proseka is like. The people that are Not Doing Great are doin so in a more. Grounded way? Like usually depressed characters in stories have really horrible things that happened to them like domestic abuse kidnapping or some form of "my entire family got murdered", the whole assortment of tragic backstory one can have u know.

They re not Unrealistic (they can and do happen to people irl unfortunately), but i feel like many stories use em as a shortcut to makin a pityable character (so not always written the most.. respectfully). It s also comforting to have someone like mafuyu be depressed cuz even tho she doesnt have "heavy" trauma her feelings are still valid and she still needs and deserves help and love from people around her. What she s going through is also bad, she doesnt need to be "worse" or have been beaten or somethin to "deserve" being helped or "deserve" feeling like she does. Am i makin sense lol

every so often im struck by the memory of one of my college professors getting very angry with our class (art history of pompeii 250) because when she excitedly detailed the ingenious roman invention of heated floors in bathhouses via hearths in small crawlspaces, we asked who was tending the fires. she said "oh, slaves i suppose. but that isnt the point". and we said that it actually very much was the point. she had just told us that in roman society there were dozens of people, maybe hundreds, who spent every day of their enslaved lives crawling in cramped, hot, smoky tunnels to light fires to warm pools of water (which they were not allowed to swim in). how could that not be the point?

she wanted us to focus on the art, on the innovation of heated plumbing, on the tiles and decorations of the bathhouses, and all we wanted to do was learn more about the people under the floors. and she didn't know anything more about that. in fact, she said she thought we were focusing too much on superfluous details.

it feels almost hokey to put too fine a point on the idea im getting at here but i will anyway: There are a lot of people who are still under the floors. all these beautiful, convenient, brilliant innovations of modern society (think fast fashion, chatgpt, uber, doordash) are still powered by people working in inhumane, untenable conditions.

the people who run these systems want you to focus on the good - who doesnt love warm water? - but if anything is going to improve or change in our lifetimes, you need to examine these things with an attentive, critical, and empathetic eye. and for fucks sake stop ordering from amazon

You sure about that?

I mean, just for a start, have you taken a good look at her fantasy creatures lately? A whole bunch of them are straight-up based on malicious and dehumanizing stereotypes about actual people.

Remember the werewolves? And being a werewolf was made into a kind of metaphor for having AIDS?

And you know how AIDS was first associated with gay men? And how conservatives back in the day were claiming gay men were preying on children in order to convert them to gayness?

Remember how Fenrir Greyback preyed on children in particular? Yeah, she put that subtext in there. She was an adult in the 90's. She knew damn well what she was doing.

Remember the house elves? Remember how most of them loved to serve and needed to have a home and a master or else they just wouldn't know what to do with themselves?

Did you know that's literally what slavers in the American South said about the Black people they kept enslaved? Go look up the happy slave myth.

Do I even need to get into the goblins and the antisemitic tropes they're based on? No, folkloric goblins were not gold-hoarding bankers waiting for their chance to stab humanity in the back.

"But the characters are so good!"

Are you kidding me?

Most of her characters are pretty one-dimensional, including Harry. Her idea of making a morally complicated character is giving a tragic past to a bully. Numerous characters are little more than stereotypes. (Looking at Fleur right now.) Literally anybody, including you, can easily make dozens of characters just as good, if not better. (It doesn't exactly take a lot of character designing skill to go, "hey, actually, having a sad backstory doesn't make it okay to bully children" or "hey, maybe I should not base a character on the first stereotype that pops into my head.")

"But the rest of the worldbuilding!"

Sorry, but her worldbuilding is just as basic as her characters. Magical castles and secret passages are stock tropes. Magical people who keep their true nature secret from humanity is the premise of pretty much every White Wolf TTRPG. Most of her fantasy creatures are just common European fairy tale and folklore creatures with shitty stereotypes projected onto them.

I'm not saying "basic worldbuilding bad." I'm saying, you could do just as good, if not better, with minimal effort.

Also there's her magical bioessentialism, where only Harry's abusive blood relatives could provide him with supernatural protection from Voldemort. Rowling thus effectively declared that non-biological family isn't quite real family, and that abusive biofamily can give you some essential thing that a loving, supportive family that isn't related to you just can't.

The Hogwarts houses are one of the most insidious elements of her worldbuilding. The idea of being sorted gives you a little dopamine hit because wow now you have a li'l niche where you belong!

But the actual function of the houses and sorting system and the House Cup is teaching children to see each other as rivals, and ensure that the most toxic views of the upper class get passed on to every new batch of kids sorted into Slytherin.

Hogwarts effectively prepares children for a dystopia where magic serves to distract its citizens from how nightmarishly awful it is. Economic inequality is so bad that people like Arthur and Molly Weasley can barely afford to put their kids through school, casual sadism is just an accepted norm in everyday society, and non-humans are second class citizens. Rowling sorta acts like she thinks this is a bad thing with certain lines she gave to Dumbledore, but in the end, her special boy protagonist becomes an auror; IE, a defender of the status quo. So.

If you've never seen it, Lily Simpson's video goes into even more detail on how the worldbuilding of Harry Potter is actually incredibly fucked up, and how it betrays small-minded attitudes on Rowling's part. There's no separating the art from this artist, because Rowling's rotten values pour out of nearly every page.

Yes, there are many things in Harry Potter that evoke feelings and inspire people, but there's absolutely nothing in it that this series has a monopoly on. You can find those same experiences in much, much better media.
