How many books did you read this year?
so far, 46! i am almost finished with bands of mourning and then i plan to read secret history and lost metal before 2023! so hopefully 48 by the end of the year (which is soooo close to 50 which has always been a goal of mine to read 50 books in a year but it's okay! there will be other years to get there!)
17. Did any books surprise you with how good they were?
i feel like in general everthing i've read of becky chambers this year has surpassed my expectations (which is saying something because i thought i would like them anyway!!) but almost every single one i've given 5 stars i think (which is a rare rating for me, so you know!!)
24. Did you DNF anything? Why?
i have a really bad habit of not knowing when to quit so although i haven't DNF'd anything yet, i do have quite a few books i have put aside to return to at some unknown point in the future. most notably probably fossil capital by andreas malm (how to blow up a pipeline was such a good book okay i think i was expecting the same vibes from this one too but it is far more academic and history-based. still a good time i am just reading it incredibly slow. also it's a reference heavy 700 page academic text so like, you know.)
25. What reading goals do you have for next year?
i want to re-read the red rising series ahead of lightbringer's publication and i'll probably start my stormlight re-read towards the end of the year in preparation for kow! aside from that it would be nice to get through a couple more wheel of time books if i can stomach it. authors i want to read more of include n k jemisin, octavia e butler, and ursula k le guin. i would also like to read more nonfiction (i read a few this year but overall it was very fiction-based!)
that's my very brief reding plan for 2023 but also i read a lot this year and haven't written very much so i think next year i'd like to focus on writing more! so less obsessing over my storygraph stats and reading x amount of books and instead just reading what i want when i want!

Oorgh thanks to thesis-ing I haven't had a lot of time to write this year but! I'm still writing chapter 3 of Synergy! Here's a snippet:
“Hm?” Normally, Enjolras’s practically telepathic connection with Combeferre was fairly effective. However, the alcohol still working its way out of Combeferre’s system tended to block the neural pathways that facilitated it.
“He wants coffee, you jackass,” Courfeyrac whisper-shouted with gritted teeth. The alcohol blockage in Combeferre’s brain usually ended up redirecting the telepathy to Courfeyrac instead. “I do too, please and thank you.”

Okay, here's my first attempt at lino printing. Again, @shamedumpster thank you so much for your tips
This is the final result, and it's also the third attempt at printing it on the paper, as I kept missing the block somehow. I have no idea how but the paper kept slipping and I could never center it right. Below the first two print attempts
Okay, general thoughts:
1) I really like the uneven look of the ink in the blacked out parts, it makes every piece different even if it's printing
2) I loved carving it out, it was probably my favourite part
3) I know the text was basically a suicide mission but when it comes to art I like to metaphorically throw myself in the water to learn to swim
4) I don't know if it's because I was working with very cheap materials but putting the ink on the block was a nightmare, it just wouldn't stick
Overall I really liked it as a technique and I can't wait to get better at it :)

The Amies of the HRT headcanons
This is based on a brainrot with @shamedumpster a long time ago, and a continuation of this post. I won't go into Grantaire, Joly and Bossuet because they are all that post.
Enjolras is really in-your-face about being trans. She is not trying to pass, she doesn't have to pass to be trans. If cis women can be butch and still be women, she can go around with a five-o-clock shadow and not go on HRT and still be a woman. One time during one of their fights Grantaire accuses her of saying that "because you already look like a girl to begin with" and she almost decked her.
Combeferre is your classic case of the person who went into a STEM major as a boy and came out as a girl. She jokes that she should have been tipped by the fact that she always played girls on RPGs. She's thankful that her coworkers are not overtly transphobes, but also sometimes they're..... they've got the spirit. That's what she tells herself. The Amies are her safe space. Also, the moment she realised she was trans she started digging into the literature. Any question you can have, she will whip out an answer, with peer-reviewed citations and footnotes.
Courfeyrac is a theatre kid. She started playing with gender at theatre, putting on dresses and makeup at rehearsals. She went down the he/they->they/them->she/they-> she/her pipeline. Her family is relatively supportive and also loaded, and she started her transition relatively young, which means she has the most complete passing out of all the Amies. She's very hot and she knows it; but she is also very careful around cis guys. She has been called "a trap" enough times to be wary.
Feuilly is mostly closeted. She can't, or doesn't dare, to be out in her blue-collar job. She can't lose her source of income, no matter how uncomfortable she is. One year she gets the courage to go to Pride, staying in the middle of the Amis and trying to stay invisible from the outside, when she hears a voice calling her deadname, and sees a girl from work looking at her. Before she can react, though, the girl is apologizing for misgendering her at work and asking for her real name. After that point, at least she has an ally.
Bahorel started her gender realization as an almost ironic thing. She became a drag queen because "wouldn't it be funny if a guy that looked like me pretended to be a girl???" and somewhere along the way she realized that actually no, it isn't funny. And she's not pretending. Now she's the biggest defender of "cringe is dead". Do things wholeheartedly or don't do them at all.
Jehan is a witchy trans. She knows everyone's star charts (or she thinks she does, Grantaire gave her a fake one to mess with her), and she swears that she can tell who is going to be trans by their star charts alone.
