I hope James talks more in the Remake.
I know a lot of people probably don't want that but oh man I really really really do- I want him to react to more monsters, react to his surroundings. Not just in text, no no, I want to hear him say that he's uncomfortable, say that he feels like he's "been in this hallway before... maybe not.." oh man.
I know that Silent Hill 2 is very much a I-get-the-context-of-this-item-/-area-by-clicking-on-it-and-reading-the-character's-thoughts-about-it game but I'd love to see that change a little bit. Maybe not to the degree Leon Kennedy does or Sebastian Castellanos's "What The Fuck?" because a character talking to themselves can be immersion breaking but PLEASE. The reason the game is like that is probably because its terribly focused on putting you in James' shoes and valuating you for its ending. Meticulous and careful so you can have the ending that suits your immersed 6-8 hour of Tragedy— instead of making you think what James would do. To a certain degree, he is a blank slate but only a little bit. In my humble opinion. still my scrunkly though.
This is something I would really enjoy seeing but; imagine the Hospital roof in SH2, there's a diary on the roof. Reading the Diary brings you a step closer to the In Water Ending because its incredibly depressing. In your first playthrough back in the day, you probably didn't realize there were multiple endings to begin with and that this diary was a small step into one of the ending's direction. Now if there was a cutscene in the Remake after clicking on the diary where James is actively reading it and we see his face contort to this.. sad lonely expression, we would actively realize that this is something that's weighing on James' mind instead of the oh-another-collectible! mindset
In the Remake trailer there's a part where James is staring through the loop of a noose, and compared to the noose puzzle in the original SH2, James' stare isn't even symbolic anymore, but I don't think that's a bad thing. This is a man contemplating and to see people boil it down to "ohmygod I can't believe James became this wimpy snotty crying man" is kind of gross, lmao? I like to imagine that the noose cutscene in the Remake trailer isn't even the hanged men puzzle, I hope its the 3 Tablet puzzle in Toluca Prison instead.
I know that the "uncanny valley" interaction between characters added to the "something is not quite right with these people" factor but if James ends up being doe eyed, teary eyed and shaky throughout the entire Remake, that's just as valid for being "not quite right" smh
I forgot what point I was trying to make at the start but here I am, head empty, just sunderskrunk
