This scene where Sesshomaru protects Kagura unfortunately only exists in the manga and has never been animated, so there is a mistaken belief that Sesshomaru never showed concern for Kagura before her death.
Furthermore, this scene proves that Rumiko Takahashi was already preparing what would happen with Kagura's death and also later with the chapter "Sesshomaru's crisis" in which the healing sword Tenseiga evolves due to the feelings of anger and sadness that he felt for what happened to Kagura.
This happens several chapters AFTER Kagura's death. Although *someone* try to say that Sesshomaru's presence in the chapter of Kagura's death is "forced", it's clear from the manga that this is not the case, in both before and after that chapter, Rumiko shows us how her intention was for Kagura to be part of the evolution of his character. And on the other hand, she herself said it in an interview, at first she didn't plan to involve them so much but then it happened NATURALLY. And she even said "it's similar to what I was saying before about Miroku and Sango"… 👀👀👀

The Epilogue of THE MOST PERFECT LEGACY is finally available now. (long overdue conclusion to Sess/Kagura week 2021 prompt fic)
Babies were adorable, but they were quite exhausting. They cried when hungry. They cried when tired. They even cried when bored. Having two of them proved to be quite a logistical challenge even with three youkai to look after them. Kagura had never been a fan of Jaken, but she could admit that it was quite useful to have him around in these trying times. He was always eager to help change sodden bottoms, soothe crying babies or give baths. She was sure that if he had been able to, the toad would have been glad to breastfeed his beloved Sesshoumaru-sama’s babies.
He was annoying, but these days she tried to be nicer to him as he did come in handy. It was because of his solicitude that the wind sorceress had managed to plot her little plan for a special evening after all. Sesshoumaru had left a few days ago. This proved to be an opportunity for his lover to seize. He had told her he would be back by nightfall today, so this had afforded her enough time to make her plans. She had seduced Sesshoumaru before, and she knew she could do it again…

I wanted to bring you another analysis of Sesshomaru and Kagura's relationship with some details I hadn't noticed before. 👀
Did Sesshomaru know that Kagura wouldn't die even if her body took heavy damage? It's very likely that he had guessed it.
First of all I found a VERY interesting detail in the manga. Here Kagura tells Sesshomaru "Hakudoshi is a Naraku's offspring, he's like him" referring to the fact that no matter how many times you destroy his body, he doesn't die because he doesn't have his heart inside him. So Sesshomaru, consequently, could have definitely thought that Kagura is like that too, as she actually is.
Another hint that Sesshomaru probably knew is that although Jaken and Rin are quite convinced that Kagura died with that huge hole in her chest, Sesshomaru is patiently waiting for her to wake up. Jaken even wonders "How did she get here in that state? She should be dead!".
But in any case we know that many things on Sesshomaru's part would be out of his character, for example showing that he cares about a Naraku's offspring in front of someone would be too much for his pride but, as much as he tries to show that he doesn't care about her at all, some of his gestures betray him.
For example, when Kagura tells him about having found Naraku's heart, the first and only thing Sesshomaru feels like saying is to warn her that she's in danger "In that case, any further actions on your part are futile, Naraku would soon find out that you're going after his heart".
First he says he doesn't care what happened to her but the thing that seems to have caught his attention the most is that Naraku knows about Kagura's betrayal and he can't help but warn her, typical Sesshomaru behavior… 😏
And when she leaves he watches her go away with an intense and worried look.
Furthermore, it's significant that, right in the middle of this chapter, Rumiko inserted a scene in which Naraku talks about the fact that he doesn't kill Kagura yet because she's still useful to him for one thing. In the manga it's not specified what, however in the anime Naraku says that Kagura is a perfect bait for Inuyasha and his friends... 👀 Sesshomaru was close to find Naraku's heart but he gave it up to go to save Kagura...
When they next met, Sesshomaru felt the need to protect her when Moryomaru was finding out that Kagura gave him the shards.
And it's no coincidence that Sesshomaru got worried when he smelled Naraku's scent next to Kagura's and not before then, because at that moment he knew that Kagura was REALLY in danger.
In conclusion, I think Rumiko Takahashi is really good at showing when Sesshomaru cares about someone without him going out of his character. 😊

The final scene with Kagura was great.
I understand why having Sesshoumaru eventually fall for a human was the ‘ideal’ aftermath.
I even like the large arc of Sesshoumaru learning to care about humans through taking care of Rin!
But why… why end up with the two of them together in the new anime aaaaaah there was a really nice story there about Sesshoumaru learning about why his father would not just fall in love with a human woman, but also care for his half-human son through essentially raising a human daughter oTL
#don’t get me wrong I enjoyed the rewatch but#it is so bizarre to have been clowning on Sesshoumaru during rewatch#couldn’t even buy any plausible deniability with having them be separated for a good chunk of time and reconnecting as adults#bc they show that he brings her gifts in the ending. WILD#kohaku x rin was right there anyway I will never understand why they didn’t go that route#they should’ve found a way to bring kagura back… somehow….
