Okay, wait. Y’all are gonna hate me for saying this but what if this “redemption arc” for Burton Lowe is part of a bigger plan? This case already hits hard for Liv. Not just because she herself only recently realized she was a victim, but also because of his connection to her mom, and the many traumas that unfolded through this “first love” of Liv’s. So, he’s reaching out to his victims, Liv is allowing him to open up and be vulnerable to her. It’s not something she owes him, or even herself, it’s just part of being The Olivia Benson. Her heart is too big for her own good. And we’ve just witnessed Burton not only acknowledging his actions, but also pleading guilty in a case he probably would’ve won.
I swear I’m not just rambling, but do y’all remember another rapist, who “was a good guy” who “changed”? Yeah, I’m talking about Olivia’s biological dad. I’m talking about that time Liv found out he kept pictures of her, that he called and Serena picked up, that he was a good husband and father after. That he died before she found him and that she’s lost Simon.
So what happens now, if on Burton’s crusade to “make amends”... he finds out that he fathered a child... or several.
I’m sorry, but all I can picture is Liv crumbling and I don’t think I could handle that.

The Back Door
as requested by the lovely and ever creative @wine-drunk-on-elizabeth 🤍 I love your oddly prompts beautiful 😂🤍 keep ‘em coming
Serena sighed happily as she was slowly roused from her dozing by the slight movement of the bed as Jamie climbed back in. Serena’s legs were jelly and her body was warm and she felt blanketed in a sweet contentment that she knew came from being thoroughly (and repeatedly) loved on by her wife. With Ollie at a sleepover, their evening had begun with a dinner date followed by a sunset walk by the water and ice cream under the stars.
From there, all Serena really remembered was coming home and being ravaged by the front door and on every other flat surface they could find on their way to the bedroom.
And now she was very satisfied and ready for cuddles. And, as expected, Jamie did not disappoint. She practically purred when she felt Jamie’s arm wrap around her waist and a small, sleepy kiss being pressed to her shoulder. She was very ready to doze off again, humming when Jamie shifted even closer…
…but jolted awake when she felt a very unwelcome, very invasive poke.
Now, there were a lot of things Serena was open to. In fact, she had learned things with Jamie (and Becca) that she never thought she’d be into. But there were certain things that were a hard no.
“Jamieson Rosita Castillo!”
Jamie’s head popped up as Serena rolled away… and right off of the bed onto the floor. The cold floor. Clutching the sheets at her chest, she glared up at her wide eyed wife.
“There are a lot of the things I’ve let you try, all of which I’ve enjoyed immensely. But I have limits Jamieson. And the backdoor is definitely off limits.”
“Wh- baby, what are you talking about?” Jamie asked sleepily, running a hand through her hair. “And why are you on the floor?”
“You poked me Jamieson,” Serena replied. “Back. There.”
Serena watched as Jamie blinked once, twice, and then looked down. “Oh Ser, I’m sorry.”
“Yes, well,” Serena sniffed as she finally stood and climbed back into bed. “You should be Jamieson. You should know better.”
“I forgot to take it off and I wanted cuddles,” Jamie replied with a small pout, sliding the harness boxers off and kicking them to the foot of the bed before holding her arms open to Serena again.
“I’ll forgive it this once, for the sake of cuddles,” Serena replied, happily rolling into Jamie’s embrace and tucking her face into her wife’s neck, biting gently. “But you get one chance Jamieson. Don’t let it happen again.”
“Understood Ser Bear,” Jamie said with a soft chuckle, pulling Serena even closer and kissing her forehead tenderly. “It won’t happen again, I promise.”
Serena sighed happily, finally content with Jamie’s answer. Cuddling into her wife’s embrace, she let herself be soothed by the steady rise and fall of Jamie’s chest, turning her head and biting down on Jamie’s shoulder again. “Mine.”
“All yours,” Jamie murmured softly, rolling them onto their sides and pulling Serena close again.
“No more moving Jamieson.”
“I’m sorry Ser Bear.”
“I will bite.”
“I love you too, preciosa.”

simplicity and other myths -- chapter three
“Yeah, just your friend,” said Alex. “Am I your friend?”
cabenovak. mature. ao3. chapter one. chapter two.
Thank God for Serena Southerlyn, thought Alex. She brought Thai food and the DVD of Pride and Prejudice over. The food was gone, and the movie was almost over.
“So what’s wrong, Alex?” Serena finally asked.
“It’s nothing, really.”
“Pride and Prejudice does not come out for nothing.”
“It’s Olivia,” Alex sighed. “She hates me.” Serena rubbed her shoulder.
“I’m sure she doesn’t hate you.”
“She’s definitely upset I didn’t tell her I was back.”
“I told you so.” Serena couldn’t resist it. Alex swatted her arm. “What did you want her reaction to be?”
Alex sighed. “I guess I wanted her to be happy I’m back.”
“I’m sure she is,” said Serena. “She can be happy you’re back and upset over other things.”
“That’s true,” said Alex. “It sucks.”
“She’ll come around.”
“I hope so.”
“Mrs. Darcy, Mrs. Darcy, Mrs. Darcy,” went the TV. Alex wiped her eyes.
---
“Caaaaaasey,” Olivia yelled from the bathroom.
“What?” Casey said, feet away from her in the hallway, causing Olivia to jump.
“I’m about to shower,” she said.
“Oh are you?” said Casey, hugging her from behind. Olivia relaxed into the touch.
“I am,” said Olivia. Casey kissed her shoulder. “Care to join me?”
“Happily,” said Casey.
---
“Alex,” said Casey when she turned around. She looked nice in her cocktail dress, she thought. “Don’t you look nice.” Damn it.
“You look nice yourself,” said Alex.
“Do you want a drink?” Casey asked, gesturing to Alex’s empty hands.
“Sure,” she said. They could be friends, couldn’t they?
“How’s the consulting business?”
“It’s fine,” said Casey, “I like the flexibility.”
“And the money,” said Alex.
“That too.” Casey winked. “What brings you here?”
“I’m meeting Serena,” she said. “What about you?”
“I’m meeting Olivia,” said Casey without a drop of embarrassment or awkwardness. Alex’s heart sunk. She envied her talent for un-subtlety. “There she is now,” said Casey, pointing to the door.
“So she is,” said Alex. “I’d better.” She gestured to the other side of the bar. As soon as she got there, she sent a series of increasingly panicked texts to Serena. They chose a different place and Alex tried to slip out unseen. If she had looked back as she left, she would’ve seen Olivia’s eyes dart to her and back to Casey.
---
“Liv,” said Casey. “What’s going on?”
“What do you mean?”
“You just sighed into your wine.”
“Oh,” said Olivia. “Alex.”
“Ah,” said Casey. “Wanna talk about it?”
“No.” Olivia picked up her and Casey’s glasses and set them on the kitchen counter.
“I wasn’t done.”
“I was,” said Olivia. She took both of Casey’s hands and guided her up from the table and into the bedroom. She kissed her lips, then her neck, and Casey found herself less annoyed at the interruption.
---
It was getting harder and harder to bear.
Alex was so fucking good at her job. Alex was dressing differently, somehow even classier, tailored suits in court, subtly revealing sweaters. Alex was trying to make things less awkward between the two of them. Bringing her coffee, asking her how she was.
Olivia couldn’t fault her determination. Her own broke one Saturday night. Drinks with the squad, peanut shells on the floor. One too many beers. A light brush of her hand, a playful squeeze on her shoulder.
Before she knew it, they were stumbling into her apartment.
“What about your girlfriend?” Alex asked between kisses, though she made no attempt to stop.
“She’s not my girlfriend,” Olivia said.
“Wait, really?” Alex said, legitimately surprised.
“Yeah, we’re just friends.” Olivia pulled Alex’s shirt over her head.
“Who leave clothes at each other’s houses?”
“I didn’t say we weren’t fucking, Alex.”
“I see.” Alex unhooked her bra for Olivia. Olivia’s mouth met her nipple and she sighed. Just like old times, Olivia thought.
When they were well and truly finished, satisfied, Alex spoke again.
“Olivia?”
“Yes?” Olivia rolled over to face her.
“I never apologized to you.” Olivia felt her heart jump.
“No,” said Olivia. “You didn’t.”
“I’m sorry,” she said. “I really am.”
“Thank you, Alex.” said Olivia, and turned back. Alex stood up and gathered her clothes.
“See you,” she said, and left.
“Bye,” said Olivia after her.
---
They weren’t dating.
Casey had to remind herself of this occasionally, when she found her heart beating a little too fast in the presence of Olivia Benson. When she had a bad meeting with a client and the first person she wanted to call was her. Olivia might be her best friend now, but she wasn’t her girlfriend.
“Oh fuck, Casey,” Olivia sighed from above her. Casey felt her stomach flutter. That never got old. It was a typical night for them: Olivia came over after work and before they knew it they were fucking. Afterwards, they would go over their days, their weeks since they’d last seen each other. Olivia would either stay over and slip out in the early morning or head home after a little while.
When Olivia left, Casey realized how much better she slept beside her.
---
It was so easy to find solace in Casey. Olivia found herself wanting Casey’s company over anybody else’s. She was comfortable around her, Casey was easy. Casey was fun. Casey was chill.
Alex was the opposite. Every time she saw her something was fraught, something went unsaid. Her pulse would quicken, she would feel cold, then hot. She kissed down Alex’s neck, nipped at her collarbone. They fucked like they used to, like they had never spent any time apart. They didn’t talk like they used to. They barely talked at all.
Her phone rang. Casey. She declined the call, and felt a wave of guilt in her chest. She flipped Alex over and scratched her back before going back to the task at hand. Alex gasped. Olivia could stand to hear that again.
“Olivia,” Alex said when they were both too tired to continue. “Can you forgive me?” Olivia was silent for long enough that Alex started to panic.
“For not calling me, yes.”
“What about for--”
“You were under a lot of pressure,” said Olivia. “I can understand why you left me.” “You can understand it?” Alex said, hesitating to ask the other question.
“Yes,” said Olivia. “Show me you’re not going anywhere, and maybe.”
“I will,” said Alex. “Would you stop seeing Casey?”
Olivia laughed at the suggestion.
“No,” she said. “I like seeing Casey.”
“More than me?” said Alex.
“You’re not comparable,” she said. “Alex, Casey is my best friend. She’s very special to me.”
“Yeah, just your friend,” said Alex. “Am I your friend?”
“I’m not sure,” said Olivia. Alex couldn’t find a way to reply to that.

Never Grow Up
❤ An Olivia and Serena mother/daughter fic based on Taylor Swift’s “Never Grow Up.” Thank you to my lovely anon who told me their relationship reminded them of this song. ❤
Your little hand's wrapped around my finger
And it's so quiet in the world tonight
Your little eyelids flutter 'cause you're dreamin'
So I tuck you in, turn on your favorite night light
To you, everything's funny
You got nothing to regret
I'd give all I have honey
If you could stay like that
Whenever Serena pictured what her life would be at 25, she pictured herself as a grad student living in London. She didn’t think her life would be the same as it was in her sorority days but she imagined herself with a small tight-knit group of friends that she could go out with for a drink or coffee. Instead, she was living in a tiny apartment in Manhattan and her nights were spent with a three-year-old that called her ‘mommy,’ but Serena wouldn’t have it any other way.
Serena wasn’t much of a cook and, between her limited budget and the limited amount of time she had in between doing her homework and chasing after Olivia, their dinner that night consisted of Dino Nuggets and Kraft mac and cheese. It was Olivia’s favorite dinner and, to her, Serena was the world’s greatest chef. Just as they always did whenever they ate Dino Nuggets, they played Olivia’s favorite game. They pretended to be dinosaurs. Olivia and Serena were the biggest dinosaurs of them all and the Dino Nuggets were their prey. Serena wasn’t sure if it was the most age appropriate game for a three-year-old, but it did get her to eat all of her dinner.
There was a small window of time between dinner and Olivia’s bedtime and Serena made sure she filled those couple of hours with quality time with her daughter. Sometimes they played with Olivia’s favorite toys, other times they watched cartoons, but regardless of what they did, those hours were always the highlight of Serena’s day.
After a night of playing, Serena knew it was time to tuck her little girl into bed and do her homework, but she didn’t want to be apart from her so she decided to do her homework in Olivia’s room so she could watch over her while she slept. When her little girl’s eyelids started to flutter, she set her laptop down and immediately rushed over to her bedside.
“Mommy’s here,” Serena whispered to her. “I’ll always be here to protect you.”
She didn’t know if Olivia was having a good dream or a bad dream, but when Olivia responded by wrapping her hand around Serena’s finger, Serena knew there was no way she could get back to her homework. She kissed her little girl’s forehead and sat beside her Lightning McQueen bed until she, herself, got sleepy. Her mom had suggested she get Olivia used to sleeping in her own bed and Serena had intended to until that night. Three years had flown by and she knew Olivia’s toddler years would someday be gone. She can sleep in her own bed when she’s four. Maybe five. No, maybe six.
Serena carried Olivia over to her bed and fell asleep that night holding on to her little girl and she didn’t let go until she felt her squirming the next morning and asking for waffles.
You're in the car on the way to the movies
And you're mortified your mom's droppin' you off
At fourteen, there's just so much you can't do
And you can't wait to move out someday and call your own shots
But don't make her drop you off around the block
Remember that she's gettin' older too
And don't lose the way that you dance
Around in your PJs getting ready for school
There were only two years left until she could start driving herself anywhere she needed to go, or so Olivia kept thinking while her mom was driving her to the movie theater to meet her friends. A mix of ‘90s and ‘00s pop music was playing and Olivia was annoyed that her mom didn’t even let her pick the music to listen to while her friends were allowed to go places on their own now that they were in the ninth grade. Olivia was allowed to ride her bike or her skateboard to and from school and within a couple of blocks of their neighborhood, but anything beyond that was off limits. Her best friend Elliot and their other friend Casey were riding their bikes to the theater that day and Abbie, Serena, and her girlfriend Alex were getting dropped off by Alex’s brother who was popular and a senior at their high school.
“I know you can’t drop me off around the block, but can you at least drop me off in the parking lot so I can create the illusion that I came here alone?” Olivia asked. “Or do you have to escort me, too?”
Olivia was used to the back and forth between them and she expected a smart remark from her mom or for her to just call her a smartass. What she wasn’t expecting was for her mom to say, “Yeah, I can do that.”
Her mom had stopped singing along to the Fall Out Boy song on the radio and Olivia looked over to see her mom wipe away a tear that had rolled down her cheek. “Mom?”
“I don’t do this to embarrass you or to be some kind of helicopter mom,” her mom managed to say through her sniffles. “I love you and I’m only trying to protect you. I know what the world is like for young girls. I remember what it was like for me at your age. You can be mad at me all you want and I’ll learn to deal with that. It’s a small price for me to pay to know the person I love more than anything in the world is safe.”
“Mom?”
“Yes, Olliegator? I mean, Olivia.”
“You can call me your Olliegator,” Olivia smiled at her. “Mom, do you think you can drop me off at the curb right in front of the theater? Just-just because it’s cold.”
It was a crisp October day, but her long-sleeved t-shirt and hoodie were more than enough to keep Olivia warm. She knew her mom could see right through her excuse and she didn’t care. “Sure, Olliegator, but only because it’s cold.”
Although there were still another twenty minutes until the movie started, her friends and her girlfriend were already waiting for her by the curb. Olivia felt her heart beat faster when they were approaching the car.
“Hey, Mom,” Elliot said to her after Serena had rolled down the windows.
“Thank you for that lipgloss recommendation,” Alex said to her mom. “I haven’t stopped wearing it.”
They probably like her more than they like me, Olivia thought and she couldn’t stop smiling because of it. She realized her reasons to feel embarrassed were all in her head. No one was judging her for still being dropped off by her mom and, even if anyone were to judge her, she promised herself she’d no longer care.
Olivia reached over to hug her mom and give her a kiss on the cheek. “I love you, Mom. Thanks for dropping me off.”
So here I am in my new apartment
In a big city, they just dropped me off
It's so much colder than I thought it would be
So I tuck myself in and turn my nightlight on
Wish I'd never grown up
I wish I'd never grown up
Olivia entered the academy after finishing up her degree. If it were up to Serena, Olivia would have chosen a different career path, particularly one where she’d be in an office and safely working at a desk, but Serena was never one to discourage her daughter from pursuing her dreams. Before Olivia knew it, she had her own apartment so she wouldn’t have to commute back and forth to the suburbs and she’d finally have her freedom.
…but that first night, she realized the freedom of her own apartment wasn’t like being in a small dorm with a roommate. She was truly alone and, as much as she hated to admit it, she was lonely. She didn’t have her seven-year-old sister barging into her room asking if she wanted to watch Goodfellas or Casino or any of the other mafia movies she had suddenly become obsessed with. Jamie had left a few days worth of meals for her, but they were in containers that she’d have to heat up. She’d no longer be able to walk over to the kitchen and offer to help chop some of the vegetables while they talked. Most of all, she missed her mom. She missed their inside jokes, the talks they had, and the way her mom insisted on cuddling her regardless of how much she tried to get away.
Her girlfriend Alex was in her first year of law school at Harvard and, although they intended to live together after Alex graduated, that was still years away and Olivia feared she’d be lonely until then. Elliot lived nearby and she knew they’d see each other frequently, but as a married man with a baby on the way, he was no longer available for a late night hangout.
It was only 10 p.m. and she debated watching one of her and her mom’s favorite movies, but she decided against it and prepared to go to sleep until she heard someone knocking at her door.
“Olliegator?”
“Mom!” Olivia nearly tripped over the couch as she hurried over to the door.
She flung open the door to see her mom standing there with an overnight bag. “I had my 7-9:30 class tonight and, while I was driving to work, I realized Columbia is closer to your apartment than it is to our house, so I might as well stay with my Olliegator…if you don’t mind.”
“I don’t mind,” Olivia insisted. “Come in. Make yourself at home.” She didn’t want to tell her, but Olivia wanted nothing more than for her mom to spend the night with her.
“Are you okay?” her mom asked when they were seated on the couch.
“I’m fine,” Olivia responded, although she knew her mom could see right through her lies. It was evident by her mom leaning over and hugging her as tightly as she could. “Mom,” Olivia struggled to say as her mom clinged to her.
“Oh, just because you’re going to be some big, tough police officer, you can’t cuddle with your mom anymore?”
“That’s exactly it,” Olivia chuckled.
Her mom rested her head on her shoulder. “Remember what I told you?” Olivia’s eyes grew wide as she remembered what her mom had told her that afternoon when she had moved into her apartment. “I told you, Olliegator, either you let me cuddle you now or the day you become a captain, I will go into your squad room and cuddle you in front of everyone. Even if you become a captain when I’m 75 and senile, I’ll still go in there. You know what, I hope it happens when I’m senile because maybe I’ll be walking around in a robe and slippers.”
“Mom!”
They ate junk food and watched a movie until her mom couldn’t stay up any longer. The former party animal, herself, can’t hang anymore.
Olivia let her mom take her bed while she opted to sleep on the couch. “You know what I was thinking, Olliegator? There’s really no need for me to drive all the way home when I have a late class when I can just stay here instead.”
“Bring pizza and you’ve got a deal.”
A few minutes later, when her mom was fast asleep, Olivia went over to the bed and gave her mom a kiss on the cheek. I never want you to grow old, Mom. I don’t know what I’d ever do without you.
