In this dry garden the self seeded Eschscholzia californica (California poppy) are blooming. These short-lived perennials are native to Mexico and the south-west of the USA but grow as annuals in the UK.

like any unspecial weed that

in the far corner
like beauty so beckoned

These are drumstick primulas and the descendents of plants I grew from seed 15 years ago or more. They are a nice little burst of spring colour and interest. They used to self sow themselves all over the garden and I was too wet to dig them up, and one day discovered my big flowerbed was full of them - which is not that attractive in summer when the flowers have gone over and the leaves have gone sort of soggy and rotten. So I dug most of them up, and they do not self seed in the Strulch I use as mulch.

The fine, wiry branches of Verbena officinalis var. grandiflora 'Bampton' (vervain) support a mist of small purplish-pink flowers which contrast well with the dark green-purple leaves. These plants withstand drought well and continue to bloom.

A wonderful self-seeder between other plants is Meconopsis cambrica (Welsh poppy) with bright yellow flowers and Meconopsis cambrica var. aurantiaca providing a splash of orange. This biennial or short-lived perennial has a tap-root with light green, pinnately lobed leaves. They are easy to grow in situ from seed sprinkled on the soil.

Running through this bed at Great Dixter, Sussex, was Papaver dubium subsp. lecoqii 'Albiflorum' (Beth's poppy) that was just starting to flower. This delicate poppy is an annual that will self-sow in a sunny, well drained site.

The upright biennial Smyrnium perfoliatum (perfoliate alexanders) will seed around the garden and produces these stunning lime-green flowers during late spring. This plant will thrive in dappled shade and here compliments the trunks of Betula cultivars.

Coriander (Coriandrum sativum) also known as Chinese parsley, dhania, or cilantro. It’s native to regions spanning from Southern Europe and Northern Africa to Southwestern Asia and has been used for at least 8000 years. Wikipedia says that nearly a quarter of people surveyed, the leaves taste like dish soap. It’s pretty easy to grow and I have even had success planting whole pods from the spice aisle at my local supermarket. I’m now blessed with self sown plants.
