foraging wildflowers for future soap making
hoping to be able to make soap as well as candles. soap making isn't hard but it's not common that commercial soaps use seasonal local ingredients
as part of my perm diploma i want to see if it's possible to make soaps entirely from local ingredients, meaning foraging wildflowers and eventually growing and pressing my own natural oils for example from pumpkin seeds
i also want to make astrologically aligned soaps and spitlight how different plants are ruled by different planets and can have different effects on our mood. but for now i need to sort theough the flowers here as there are actually some ones i can't identify.

Newsletter?
It seems that every company’s website wants you to sign up for a newsletter or some such nonsense. My nearly-universal response is no, no, NO, don’t send me shit, I don’t want it, NO.
The exception, however, is the orchard. They want to send me newsletters about luscious, seasonal pick-your-own fruits.
YES!

Tell me when the cherries are available. I want to hear about peaches. How’s your apple crop coming along? I love these guys. Trying not to drool on my keyboard, now.

Let me introduce to you, the swedish traditional autumn food. "Fläsklägg & Rotmos". 10 hours in the cooker made it perfect!
I had already been considering trying to make some of this (though probably in the Instant Pot), after seeing the appropriate ham hocks on sale pretty cheap. But, this post gave me another push! 😁
Besides that recent root vegetable heavy beef stew, I just used the other half of that chuck for a pot roast with the same veggies the other day. It wasn't all root vegetables; there was stalk celery in there too!
That kind of seasonal delight has been tasting particularly good to me lately, okay? 😊 It's so fresh and seasonal and cheap!
Not sure everyone in the house would be as enthused at the prospect of more turnips quite yet, however. Even in my best attempt at Proper Swedish Style this time. Minus any parsnips, because I do have some limits where root veggies are concerned.
(Not that this is really very different from the recent basic hillbilly pot roast, except for the type of meat and mashing the vegetables up together rather than just leaving them in big chunks. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Blame the Scots way back, probably.)
Anyway, some guy making it on the stove:

Stuffed Acorn Squash
With grocery prices skyrocketing around here, I’ve really been trying to shop for some of the cheaper produce even if we’ve never tried them before. Last week I picked up a couple of acorn squash… I mean we do like most squashes so I figured we would like them too. I’m sure there are a ton of ways that these could be prepared but I just couldn’t pick a recipe so I went with something similar to…

Seasonal Produce in Southern California
INTRODUCTION I grew up on what is what one could possibly describe as a “gentleman’s farm.” Not that we ever referred to it as such. I’d never heard that term as a kid — and my mom, who ran show, would’ve no doubt rejected the title of “gentleman.” My mother also might’ve objected to characterizing her operation as a farm. She was raised on a proper farm, after all — one with hundreds of acres…

Happy September 1st! While October may be my favorite time of year, September is the beginning where the excitement of fall begins to blow in cooler weather (at least in some parts of the country).
One of my favorite ways to get excited for the changing of the seasons & a new month is to look up the produce now in season. By adding these to my meals, I feel that much more in tuned to the world around me. What’s in season where you live?
