. . O is for the Ocean . . . The Ocean is one of the most beautiful destinations on this planet; always changing, always fascinating, dramatic and romantic. To me, it is the very essence of travel and a route to untold adventures. Arriving by sea, particularly on a ship, is absolutely without doubt the most exciting and a complete seduction. As the port draws gradually closer, it’s often early in the day so the light is changing, the world is waking. Then, one at a time the smells and sounds of the port become apparent and tantalise your other senses; you can even taste it if you try. The markets, the traffic, the chatter on the quayside, a whole new and different language of this new haven heightens the excitement. A particular highlight is to arrive in to New York after a week long transatlantic. The great metropolis is unwrapped, metre by metre. First, the lights on the horizon, then the sounds, mainly of traffic; something long forgotten during a week of peace and serenity upon the sea. Next, the liner glides under the Verrazzano Bridge and the hectic, frenetic, rushing traffic is literally flying overhead. Suddenly, you’re in the bay and surrounded by the city. Soon the Statue of Liberty and downtown Manhattan come in to sight. All the while the day is waking and the sun rising. Believe me, it beats flying into JFK every time. Sailing into NYC is unforgettable but so is Barcelona, St Malo and yes, even Southampton.
