As part of devoloping my Portrait Photography (Excuse the unintended pun) I've taken it upon myself to try and shoot in the most difficult conditions and make it work. One of which is midday sun and no access to an ND Filter, since as you know I lost mine to a rockpool at last weeks sunrise. The thought process being that I will be forced to have to work harder and outside any practical comfort zones to get the settings anywhere near right while shooting Manual. In turn I know this will help when finding those settings in much easier and more favourable conditions. So here is a quick video of my choice for Location 2 of my maiden voyage into Portrait Photography with the ridiculously photogenic @jakeyyyy94 This was Day 1 of creating his Portfolio for future projects including the possibility of a collaboration with a very cool fresh brand of clothing @flydoh To say neither of us have done this before be it modelling for him or Portraits for a Portfolio for me it felt like a very productive 90 minutes. A huge learning curve in a small amount of time (Harsh shadows are my nemesis) so excited to see how things turn out after a bit of Post Processing. I'm giving serious thought to starting a YouTube Channel to Vlog my experiences as I make the jump from Amateur Enthusiast to Paid Professional Photographer. Would you watch it? I'm pretty much set to start doing it and I'm not short of ideas so keep an eye out... Here is a quick sneak peek at this mornings sunrise walk complete with @rubyzgotviews she's not normally a morning dog but this morning she gave the eyes so couldn't say no. I said my first farewell to a piece of Camera Equipment as my Variable ND filter was lost to a hole in a rockpool as I fought for dear life. Its a sad story... I stepped through some rockpools smug in my wellies gliding through puddles with dry socks until I stepped in a surprise lagoon up to my knee and was almost swallowed by the 'puddle' and water overflowed into my Welly. While panicking to protect the camera round my neck as I almost lost balance I grabbed it along with the lens cap I have fixed to the strap in a swoop and had the ND filter locked into the Cap. I somehow squeezed the releases at the point of hitting the ground and the Filter dropped deep into the Abyss. I stormed off in a mood and resorted to taking pictures of puddles as without the filter long exposures were a write off. On the upside I think I caught a keeper... Enjoy the view, the sun was GLORIOUS. As with the Previous Shoot I saved one picture to surprise the client as a little bonus and this was no exception. I loved this image from the moment I saw it in Camera and knew straught away it was going to be Dark, Moody and Monochrome. It seems there's just something very encapsulating about stripping away the distraction of colour in Portrait Photography or any Photography for that matter. It feels so intense, focused and atmospheric no matter the subject. I really pushed the Contrast here to try exacerbate that exact feeling. If there's one thing I love it's a good puddle. 💧💧💧 This one is no exception. I took a solid 20 intimate minutes with this puddle trying to find a good composition with the sunrise and the sand but I admit I struggled. There's just something very calming about a body of water that is deadly still and I tried to capture that image of an escape here. This is the kind of view worth sitting with a coffee and enjoying as I did after wrestling with angles. Room for improvement is not a negative. Switching up the mood a bit for the first day of Spring.
