My fellow Scotts!
When was the last time your gluten free family and friends enjoyed the comfort and joy that can only be obtained by a delicious potato scone?
There is a very high chance that they have not known the taste of goodness since before they went gluten free. Years and years and years without a complete breakfast roll or fry up. Can you imagine!?
Would you like to bring this joy back into their life for near-to-zero effort? Of course you would because you love them and everyone deserves to be shown they are loved
Here's a 15 min recipe:
400g cold mashed potato
100g gluten free flour (self raising or plain + 2tsp baking powder)
Pinch of salt
Obtain the mashed potato by either making too much for dinner the night before or those £1 microwave packs are the perfect size
Add some salt to the flour
Mix the potato and flour until its stiff
Flour a surface and rolling pin, roll out a chunk until its about the size of a side plate
Put a side plate over and use to cut the potato into a circle, then cut the circle into quarters
Fry 'em (this can be done at the same time as the rest of breakfast if that's all gf too)
Repeat steps 4-6 until the mix is done (about 12 scones)
If there's any left you can fridge or freeze them and re-fry them the same as a pack from the shops. I have never had any left over.
Feel free to use normal flour exactly the same way for normal people, but they can also go to the shop

11 April 2023: lunch at Contini in Edinburgh
I didn't expect to find such delish and fancy Italian food in Scotland, but they sure have it! I ordered bruschetta and a chicken dish, and the brusch' marked my first time trying anchovies. They are much more delicious than their reputation would have me believe. very salty, good little fish. would eat again on bruschetta, but maybe not on pizza.
the chicken was delish, the cosmo was strong, and the atmosphere was very nice. my partner got a vegetarian dish he quite enjoyed, and his dad (the birthday boy!) got the lamb (which he offered to let me try a bite and omg lamb is so yummy which i'm sorry not sorry it's delish).
we also indulged in desserts, as it was a birthday, and I do not remember the name of the little puff pastries filled with creme that I got but they were delizioso.
10/10, would go there again, especially for the cosmos ;)
is a bit pricey but very good and ideal for a celebratory birthday dinner!!

Burns Night Dinner
If you know me --and even if you don’t-- you might know or suspect I am a bon-vivant! I love food, I love eating and I love cooking and baking. And I love trying new things, discovering tastes and making meals from all over the world. Perhaps it is because I also love travelling, and one can only go to so many places a year (not many) and so in the meantime I cook! In that same spirit, and because I believe food (like literature and language) is such a wonderful way to discover a culture, I often make feasts for National Holidays celebrated, well again, all over the world. Thus, on Burns Night, and indeed during all the day of the 25th of January, I pour myself a good Scotch Whisky or two, read Robert Burns’ evocative poetry, and dine on Scottish cuisine! Here are recipes for a delicious Burns Night Dinner. Have a good one friends, whether or not you’re a Scot!

Where to eat along the road in Argyll and Bute and the Isle of Mull
It’s not always easy to find a place to eat while on the road, especially since lots of places close early in Scotland. While on the Isle of Arran we stopped at the Ormidale Hotel for hot drinks and a sticky toffee pudding. The pub was busy and had an open fire place, which was much appreciated in this weather.

The food of my childhood years drew heavily on my Scottish heritage. I still make my shortbread the way my Mum did: 2, 4, 6: 2 oz sugar, 4 oz butter, 6 oz flour and press the edges with a fork. With a hot cuppa it’s just wonderful. #ianscottmassie #TheJoyOfCakes @ianscottmassie
