Before considering what to say next, Hunter looked at the time and shook his head. He deleted the message and made another attempt at cleaning, only to hear his own scroll buzz on the table.

hello_willow: Knock knock.

A matching knock tapped on the front door. Raising an eyebrow, Hunter padded quietly to open it, and there, under the light of the Noceda’s porch – bundled in a thick jacket and a woolen hat in the shape of a bee, stood Willow Park. Her breath hung heavy in the air.

SCOM HeadCanon!

As we know Dana Terrace (supposedly) doesn’t like musicals … but we know from Hunting Palismen that Hunter whistles AND he’s an accomplished Bard in SCOM.

I imagine that he’d whistle Les Mis when he’s stressed about money and probably saw that show like 10 times (and read the book a ton as well).

Every time he see Les Mis, even a high school production of it, someone has to drag him out of his seat because he’s hysterically crying. He identifies with almost EVERYTHING SINGLE CHARACTER at some point and he can’t take it.

Luz is blackmailing him with an audio recording of him singling the Cosette and Eponine numbers in the shower.

"How about grieving it all at one time."

Usually, Dad would have gone for seconds or thirds right now. Everything felt wrong. The air was thin and Luz couldn’t manage to breathe. Her face must have grown dull because Papa ruffled her hair.

“Hey! I know what we can do!” his face brightened. “How about we give the traditional Noceda Family Gluttony Day Blessing?”

In spite of it all, Luz felt a tug at the side of her lips. “Can I do it?” she smiled.

“Oh! Noooooo! I wanted to do it this year!” Mama dramatically flailed her arms around.

“MOOOOOOOOOOOOM!” Luz squealed.

“Come on, Camila!” Papa laughed. “Stop teasing.”

Vee’s stomach froze as she watched Willow’s face go bright red. And then there was her brother.

He was trying to form words. “I’m. We’re…: Just…I mean.” But Hunter’s brain was broken. He was offline. In full wet cat mode.

SCOM Micro Writing Notes:

Once again, Hunter is stuck in the middle of a petty rivalry between his sisters.

But it’s thick with subtext.

Luz is still mad that Vee and Hunter (and Cabin 7, but mostly the latter) watched Cobra Kai without her.

Vee is upset that some of the old hags tales about Grimwalker biology might actually have merit (also they are being pushed by a toxic political candidate with a vendetta against her family)

Hunter doesn’t want to add to Willow’s stress and Darius finally has given Hunter something he had been asking about for over a decade.

Belos’ ledger about his predecessors… at least one that covers the first 100 years of them.

II. “BENJAMIN” GROWN PHYSICALLY TO AGE 23

SCOM Next Chapter Preview with recap:

Possible working track for next chapter, but I'm not 100%

Last chapter passed another reveal I've been sitting on for a while. Hope you all enjoyed your jerky!

Last chapter:

Hunter swallowed. He pulled the torn paper with the poem closer to himself. He reached for a pin cushion that sat in the middle of the kitchen table, plucking a thin needle from the middle. Wincing, as his sisters continued their shouting match, he pricked his forefinger, letting three drops of blood fall on the paper.

Slowly the poem disappeared, revealing a new set of words.

“Hunter?” Luz’s voice shook. “That’s your handwriting…”

Next chapter:

“Again.” Belos muttered softly.

Hunter’s hands shook slightly, as he scratched out the words, “Maleficos non patieris” yet another time. He stayed within the lines provided, made sure that his t’s were crossed at the correct angle. That his lettering was sharp and clear.

The emperor looked on and nodded with a satisfied smile. “Very good dear nephew.” He crooned. “Very good indeed.”

“Uncle.” Hunter whispered. “What does it mean?”

“Hmmm?” Belos looked over his shoulder. His eyes grew cold. Hunter knew he should stop there, but the words had already passed his lips before could. “The lines I’m writing today. I don’t recognize this language.”

SCOM Side Story: Thank you Consequence.

Luz had spoken about "Thanksgiving" or "Gluttony Day" as she preferred to call it -- but Hunter hadn't gotten to enjoy the actual "Gluttony" part. Or the "Togetherness" part. Or any of it, really.

But this year, the Noceda Siblings were excited to share this day together.

"You eat yourself silly and lie on your stomach, then you eat more." Luz had explained.

But this was also a holiday built on a fallacy -- much like the ones Belos had built for The Day of Unity. And while Luz is cautiously excited that this will be a year very different from the lovely one after her dad had passed, Vee and Hunter are trying to figure out what it means to them.

Especially when Camila suggests that they invite all their new family from the Demon Realm to celebrate with them. Including Willow's dads whose trust Hunter had been convinced he'd broken.

Chapter 88 Writing Notes.

I REALLY hope I didn't lose you all with the last chapter structure!

I like to play with formats to tell the story outside of Hunter's POV and feed the reader clues as to what has been building.

88 Chapters of emotional build up, political intrigue, peppered with lore has been A LOT to keep a handle on.

I also can't help but mess with the audience sometimes -- I just hope this wasn't TOO weird for you all... I like to torture myself too.

Thanks to @unniebeans who gave me a heads up as to how to use the weird text in Ao3.

A few more notes for spoilers below but I am working on an in universe One Shot from Vee's POV based on one of @yayay0827's ridiculously angsty comics.

And next chapter we will finally (mostly) see an appearance of someone who has been teased throughout the story.

So the In-Between Realm is REALLY intriguing!

I am a big mythology buff and am DYING to play with some of that lore, but maybe in another fic (or a follow up I might do?)

Either way, when Luz made her deal with Papa Titan she was MOSTLY DEAD, and she had traveled there before when visiting her mother.

But how do the rules work there, and are there other ways to open that gate?

This is the third time (I believe) that Hunter has had a brush with the In-Between Realm -- and the first where he seemed immersed in it.

There's a common link between the times it's happened which I am not going to spoil -- but it does tie into everything.

Any theories on who the voices were that Hunter heard as he lost his ability to exercise free will?

The importance of music is a running theme in SCOM and this felt like the right time to bring back the initial riff of "Sweet Child O' Mine."

As I think the TOH community universally agrees that Hunter is prone to dissociation, I wanted to bring Raine's use of music therapy into the story.

Hunter is no longer a child, but the kind of trauma he'd lived through casts a long shadow. Healthy coping skills are key here.

Raine teaches him to use music to pull himself out of a dissociative episode, so Hunter uses these tools here.

There's also several callbacks to in story events from previous chapters -- but one of the locations that Hunter visits in the vision is a TOH canon location.

Did anyone catch it?

Anyway, Hunter appears to be losing his grip on reality.

His bond with Willow and their child is intensifying as she enters the last trimester.

There's an "unauthorized biography" of his life on the horizon with a movie tie in.

He's being stalked by the False GG who has finally maimed one of his loved ones.

A major political candidate is calling for an opening of the market on resources such as galdorstones and palistrom wood.

He's going to have to face Kiki, Adrian, and Terra to avoid a new Inner Circle Trial -- who are claiming he's a liar.

And he's NOT. But he did massage the truth in order to keep Vee safe.

And he's also supposed to appear for a big interview and do something he's never managed to do in public -- seem SANE.

So, yeah, throwing him into a trippy interlude between realms was totally cool!

How 'bout no longer being masochistic?

Hunter wants to ask Gil and Harvey to dinner at Camila's. But his own guilt is still heavy on his shoulders. After all, he's never done this before and even after a year? Unpacking the trauma of being raised under Belos' neglect haunts him.

But Luz might have managed to find a way to make the holiday even more awkward for everyone.

SCOM in universe fun fact!

As I get ready to drop the first chapter of “Thank You Consequence.” My early timeline SCOM universe Thanksgiving fic, I offer you this.

The Boiling Isles conceived the idea of Remembrance Day a year after Belos’ demise.

There were a few different ideas as to what the day might be called, but Hunter and Gus (and later Raeda, King and Luz) advocated for the holiday to be known as “Weasel Stomping Day.”

I know this is from an older chapter, but one of my favorite things about the final showdown between Hunter and Fool’s Gold was getting to write him snarky.

“Put. Luz. Down.” He demanded. His voice was almost scratchy, like feedback on a radio. But it held weight. It was still clear. Strong. Confident . “Let my family and friends go. Give the palismen back their freedom.”

The Guard’s body turned slowly, seemingly un-phased by Hunter’s sudden change.“ Seriously ?” They let out a long light laugh. Luz and Stringbean fell to the ground as the Golden Guard grabbed their belly, dramatically draping themselves over the side of the winged staff. “YOU are not the one who gets to give ME orders, SERVANT CLASS SPECIES.” They sneered.

Hunter moved his Rickenbacker Fireglo into playing position. His fingers hovered over the strings. He paused for a moment to collect his thoughts. His head felt like it was full of firebees, but the space gave a semblance of dramatic effect.

“Well,” he smirked, “You literally just let Luz and Stringbean go, so you kinda are following my orders .”

SCOM Next Chapter 1st line!

There are a lot of sounds across the realms that cause the so called feeling of “blood curdlingg”.

And of course, when a being, human, witch, demon or otherwise describes a terrible sound as, “blood curdling” their blood is not in fact actually curdling.

OR --

Luz is always there to rescue Hunter when he needs her most. It's kind of their sibling brand.

But this time she brings her human bard weapon of torture to a battle and uses it on the Off Brand Golden Guard and gives Hunter the opening he needs to summon his own bard weapon.
