Loki - season 2, episode 6 series finale -immediate reaction
Okay, so this time I’m gonna have to split this into two posts. This one is my reaction after just watching the finale, but this time it’s going to be mostly my emotional response, and the more considered post with images will have to wait till later. I don’t have the heart for it right now.
So yeah, spoilers ahead.
Well that tore out my heart and stamped on it!
I mean it was an utterly perfect story for a character like Loki, but I’m still devastated. I love it. And I hate it.
I love it on a story level. The whole season was beautifully done! Loki developed so much over the six episodes, and really won my heart back. I fell in love with the gang from the TVA, particularly OB and Mobius, and I warmed to Sylvie and just wanted her to be able to live the quiet life she’s wanted for so long.
I loved that they really went into the depth I had assumed I’d only get in a fic about the different attempts Loki made to fix things by going back in time. They didn’t just gloss over things, they really showed him trying. I was shocked when after he asked OB how long it would take him to learn everything, he went and spent CENTURIES doing it! My stomach dropped. Because can you imagine what that means for someone? Even someone as long lived as Loki? What that has to do to your mind? And that should have been the first clue things weren’t going to turn up roses.
Then he finally succeeds! But they don’t show it to us like we’re experiencing that moment, but more as though we’re an observer, rushing through it because it’s yet another repeat. And for one brief moment Loki is happy because he thinks they’ve done it. But no, it turns out to have been an impossible task!
And then he finds out that HWR basically gave him his newfound powers, and that he still had a lot to learn, and then we see THAT HE ALREADY HAD LEARNED! The way they kept dropping the sense of time on us, that sense of dread and urgency. And inevitability. *shivers*
How he tries, and tries, and tries to convince Sylvie, but can’t get through to her, and how he has to contemplate whether he’s the sort of man who could kill her. I loved how he visited Mobius to ask for his advice. My god. What a horrible conversation to have to have. But what trust he places in Mobius!
And I loved how he kept refusing to take the easy path. How he decided he couldn’t kill Sylvie, and how he realised there was another way. But OMG at what price!? I can’t….
But I hated how much this hurt Loki, what this took from him. When the gold from the rock trickles upwards to create a mockery of a throne, which is more a prison… just…. 😭 The look on his face once he knows what he has to do. He had to make the impossible choice, and he chose the impossible.
I love that it kept the tone of tragedy that has haunted Loki all through the MCU. I love how they were true to his character in that way, but AT THE SAME TIME allowed him to retain his new sense of self, all that growth we’ve shared through this series but also the change that he’s experienced while he’s been isolated during centuries trying to find a way to defeat HWR and keep the people on the branched timelines safe. His desperate act to do the right thing. And finally it is the right thing in the eyes of the universe and the audience, and yet he still loses. My heart just can’t bear it!
It’s perfect and it hurts.

Hi there! I'm looking for a way to buy a copy of When I Arrived at the Castle by Emily Carroll (I checked it out from my library and it was amazing!), but it seems to be out of print and I can't find it digitally. I saw your post about it from October and was just wondering how you found the copy you read? Thanks :)
I'm sorry for such an absurdly late response, I'm afraid I found it at a tiny creaky little bookshop called Lucky's here in Vancouver, and I haven't been able to find it elsewhere 😔

Re: the ask about Loki comics - is there any Loki comics stuff worth reading between AOA and the 2019 series? I'm not really interested in non-Loki comics but it sounds like there's some of him mixed in with others since AOA? (I looked around online a bit but couldn't find a whole lot of info.) Also would the 2019 one (or that Thor one you mentioned) make sense if you haven't read anything since AOA? Lol the comics confuse me so much sometimes.
Okay, took me forever to get to this because apparently I’ve forgotten how to respond to asks that require actual thought about anything. I mean, ‘actual thought about anything’ is in pretty short supply in this brain generally, these days.
So! Loki comics stuff that I’d recommend in that interval. The short answer is “not a lot but a few things.”
He appears here and there in the Mighty Thor series (where Jane is Thor) - not with any consistency or anything so I wouldn’t necessarily read it just for him, but there is some good stuff in there, the series itself is quite good, and Russell Dauterman draws a Loki who is delightfully pretty (he’s up there with Jamie McKelvie’s) - here he is looking absolutely wrecked.
The Sorcerer Supreme arc in Doctor Strange #381-385 - Loki is temporarily Sorcerer Supreme (instead of Doctor Strange). It’s a short arc but I genuinely loved it.
I’d also say it’s worth reading the Thor (2018) series’s first arc for Loki (#1-4).
He also appears here and there in Unbeatable Squirrel Girl which I know other people really like but is not my cup of tea - the issues you could check out would be #27-30.
My anti-rec is to not bother with Vote Loki - it might be his only self-titled series in the interim but it really is not worth reading.
The 2019 series references some stuff that mostly comes out of the War of the Realms event, but I don’t think that’s one I’d read for Loki specifically - all you really need to know about it, I’d say, is that Loki has seemingly been working for the bad guys for a while and then gets eaten by Laufey after backstabbing him (he cuts his way out later, it’s fine). Otherwise, I think it really is primarily following on the Journey Into Mystery/Young Avengers/Agent of Asgard arc, so with that background you should be good.

52. Accidentally Witnessed kiss
“Bold, angel,” Ashtoreth murmured. The shadows of the garden trees softened their outlines in shadow, making her eyes look like they were glowing as they peeked up at Francis over her glasses.
He leaned in, watched her lips part in anticipation, and gave her a peck at the corner of her mouth instead. Then her nose. Then both cheeks. Her laughter, Francis thought with no trace of irony, was divine.
“Bold, teasing angel. You know I can’t stay long.”
“I ask for but a moment of your time, my lady.” Francis kissed along her jaw, delighted at the way her skin warmed with blush. “We’ve wasted quite enough of it already, don’t you think?”
She hummed at his double meaning, and looked at him slightly dazedly, like she still couldn’t believe they were finally on the same page. Francis pressed her closer against the tree bark, cupped her face in his hands, sighed in adoration as she reached up to hold his wrist in place.
“Besides, I’ve yet to hear any complaints about these little moments.”
“And you never will,” Ashtoreth promised. Her essence, older and lovelier than Earth’s creation, sang to him as they kissed again, and he joined her harmony with the giddiness of newfound freedom. He’d gladly stay Francis forever if it meant he could give her this.
Her fingers curled under his collar. “Azira–”
“SURPRISE!”
Ashtoreth shrieked and stumbled as something violently crashed against her middle from the right side. Only Francis’s intervention kept her from falling flat on her arse in the leaves.
“Warlock!” Ashtoreth all but shoved Francis away, and pressed her glasses tight against her eyes. “You, you’re supposed to be in lessons–”
“Mr. Smithy ended them early today. You promised you’d play with me after, so I came to get you.”
“That’s…nice.” Ashtoreth stared at Francis, and a helpless smirk wobbled onto her face. Francis laughed (because it was the only thing to do at that point), and bowed (playfully) to Warlock and (reverently) to Ashtoreth.
“Well, far be it from me to keep a growing lad from his playtime! I must return to the garden anyway. The azaleas need watering.”
“You over-water them,” tsked Ashtoreth. Francis waved her off, gave Warlock another wide grin, and started down the path back to his garden. Behind him, he heard Warlock talking to his nanny.
“Were you playing dinosaurs, Nanny? Is that why Brother Francis was pretending to eat your face?”

I am just. continually glad we've both agreed that President Loki is a Very Good Boy and nothing will convince us otherwise
Marvel was like "okay, we're gonna let Loki be an actual hero I guess, but also he's still famous as a villain everybody loves to hate or whatever so here, you get that too! the only other variant played by Tom Hiddleston! actually for real evil, almost certainly no redeeming qualities, just for the villain stans!"
and I'm like "hmm, yes I have considered and rejected your proposal on the basis that President Loki is played by Tom Hiddleston and I'm sorry but you'd have your work cut out for you convincing me anybody played by Tom is irredeemably evil (no it's not just because he's pretty! he does things with his face and brings nuance and humanity to every single role he plays for longer than like five minutes and it's real reasonable to assume he couldn't have been President Loki for much longer without doing the same thing with him! and also he's extremely pretty), let alone a Loki played by Tom Hiddleston--and then you stuck him in an extremely shitty place he can never escape and you still want me to think he's Just Evil instead of desperate and basically feral? sorry no, extremely unrealistic, can't buy it, also he's mine now, cheers"
(I will admit I feel a little bad that I'm more interested in President Loki than, say, Boastful Loki. I mean I'm interested in Boastful Loki too! his level of swagger is incredible! it's just, uh, Boastful Loki wasn't played by Tom Hiddleston, so...he's got an automatic disadvantage as far as my interest goes.)

Re: your reblog of the ttdw deleted scene - lol I'd never thought of that before but I always figured Frigga was the only one who could see him doing it? Bc she has magic and and most likely taught him I thought she might be able to see into his illusions? I've always pictured him presenting the illusion of him just standing there to everyone else so they can't see him acting out the fantasy, but Frigga may have had some kind of magical intuition to tell that he was creating an illusion.
that’s what I would have assumed too, that everyone else could just see him sitting there or something but
literally everyone, even the guy on the left from a different cell seems to have been watching and now are dispersing as the ‘show’ has ended
