What are your ginran aus?
ohhhhhh boy. ok. lets start with the silly and go from there.
BLEACH RACING AU!!!!!!!!
its basically the cast of bleach if they all raced sailboats. its everything to me. Haven't decided yet if they race dinghies out of a club or if they race bigger sailboats and each division is a team. either way its silly and fun. ginran is important to this one (homoeroticism of sailing) but most of what ive written down is me just putting aizen into a situation
little blurb: "Aizen is the kind of guy who got into sailing to seem more sophisticated and then realized that he made it too much of his personality and so he's locked himself into self-inflicted psychic warfare with himself about how he would want nothing in the world more than to be anywhere but waxing a boat but if he backs out now everyone will know that he's just been doing it to look cool and thats actually so much worse. Everyone else sails because they either love it or theyve grown up around it enough that its like. what else would they do. Aizen though is playing 5d mental chess about whether or not people will think he's a poser if he stops showing up for practice"
SCI-FI AU!!!!!!!!!!!!
Fem!gin and robot!rangiku. Gin is a mechanic who found rangiku after she was tossed out for scrap by aizen. this one makes me insane. so fucking insane. the yuri of it all. the inherent eroticism of being a mechanic and working on the robot you're falling in love with. important to note that rangiku isnt an android like from dbh. she's very clearly a robot. think more along the lines of Pathfinder from apex legends
little blurb: "Mechanic Gin who ties her long hair back in a bun or perhaps a braid while working and who takes her gloves off with her teeth and takes a job directly under a ship's captain after she finds out that he's the captain that threw Rangiku out for scrap and she wears her hair long and it flows over her shoulders even while she works. Aizen comments that she reminds him a lot of another ship's captain that he knew years ago and she says "I'm not sure what yer talkin' about, Aizen-senchou" as she slowly takes apart his ship's interface from the inside"
MERCHANT SHIPPING AU!!!!!!
ficlet!!!!!
this is another one that ive been going insane about, mostly because im using it as an excuse to research tokugawa period japan and its shipping practices. thank you so much to Jakobina Arch from Whitman College for writing an absurd amount on this subject and also The Indian Ocean World Podcast for having her on their podcast. She's been my main source of both information and inspiration for starting this au LOL.
As young kids, Gin and Rangiku are taken in by Hirako Shinji, a strange but respectable captain of a merchant vessel. Aizen is a seemingly kind sailor on the ship, stuck doing gruntwork that he thinks he's above doing. In a fit of annoyance and ego, when he thinks no one is watching, he hurts Rangiku and threatens her not to tell anyone it was him. Eventually, Aizen leaves Hirako's crew, but Gin remembers him
Aizen kills and manipulates and slithers his way to the top of a trading company, and when Hirako's bezaisen faces being bought up by Aizen, Gin abandons the crew to join Aizen's. It's then a race against time to kill Aizen before he decides to go through with the purchase.
Hirako Shinji is their original captain. While Hirako-senchou works his crew hard and is a bit of a strange man, he is trusted by his crew to not cheat them of money, and to ultimately be a fair captain.
Izuru, Momo, and Renji are three young sailors on Aizen's crew. Momo works directly for Aizen and does his paperwork and navigation. She handles all of the important work that he simply signs off on. Despite her doing the brunt of the work, she respects the captain greatly.
When Gin joins the crew he works hard enough and freaks out enough of the other sailors that he earns his place as secondmate. Izuru takes a shining to him, and Gin enjoys having someone who respects him on the ship who he can also boss around.
Renji, Izuru and Momo's old friend who used to be on the same crew with them, had left work as a merchant sailor to instead serve a daimyou who had adopted his best friend.
Rangiku earns her salt as a master navigator and sailor after Gin leaves, becoming a trusted advisor to Hirako. She doesn't understand the reasoning of why Gin would abandon their crew, and she respects Hirako-senchou and the rest of the crew too much to abandon ship as well.
Hitsugaya is a 12 year old boy who has a strong mind for trade as well as sailing and navigation, and even the paperwork it involves. He comes onto the ship after Gin leaves, looking for information on the whereabouts of his older sister. Rangiku finds good company with him, even if she does like to tease him.
FLOWERS FOR ATONEMENT!!!!!!!!
ffa isnt an au so much as it is a fic im currently writing LOL it takes place after hueco mundo arc, and is based around Gin actually managing to kill Aizen and coming out unscathed. It's a lot about interpersonal relationships and Gin reconciling with not only Rangiku, but Izuru and Shinji (Who is temporary captain of the 5th while Momo is recovering) as well. Gin is whisked away to interrogation by 2nd company, so he isn't exactly given time with Rangiku directly after Aizen's death.
i put more of my writing in here than i thought i was going to, but i hope you enjoy either way LOLL
Snippet:
"I fucked Hisagi after you left."
She's sitting on the couch in her and Hitsugaya's office as Gin looks through the books in the bookcase behind her. Rangiku had chased her captain out of the office, promising to get paperwork done while he visited Hinamori. Of course, that had been the plan until Gin had quietly knocked and ducked into the office in the way he was so oft to do now.
She hears him stop flipping through one of the books. She swirls the sake in her cup and doesn't look behind her.
"Really? Hisagi? There's gotta be better choices than that."
"Bah! Like who?"
Gin makes a noise in his throat like a shrug. "Was he good?"
She tosses back the sake and rolls her shoulders. It pains her that she can't look more away from the conversation than Gin already being behind her. "I don't really remember; Kira and I were pretty wasted at that point."
Gin's silent for a minute, and it leaves Rangiku to stew in her thoughts.
"How is Izuru these days?"
Rangiku clenches her jaw. Her hands feel empty without sake in the cup, but moving to pour more feels like admitting defeat. She settles back into the couch and tilts her head towards him just enough to give him her ear. She still won't look at him. "Have you talked to him? Shouldn't a captain know how his lieutenant is?"
"Ah, for a lieutenant, he's pretty good at avoidin' his captain."
"And why do you think that is, Gin?" When she spins around to look at him, he's holding a poetry collection Hitsugaya had gifted her for New Years maybe 8 years ago. "Why in the name of the Soul King would Kira want to avoid you? Is it because you left? Is it because you played with his feelings? Because you used him and tossed him away? Is it because you didn't tell him what you were planning?" She should stop, she really should. She doesn't want to lose him again. "Why didn't you tell him, Gin? Why didn't you tell me?" She's staring at him, pleading him to say something, to say anything instead of just leaving again with no answer.
"He could've hurt one of ya."
Something in her heart breaks, and she doesn't even recognize what's happening before she breaks out into heavy, ugly sobs.
Gin hurries around to her side of the couch, past the wall she had put up between them. He catches the sake cup as it drops from her hands and hesitates for only a moment before gently (oh, so gently) relaxing her hands from where she had been digging her nails into her palms in its absence.
"Aw, c'mon, Ran. Ya don't need to cry."
He's standing in front of her with her hands held in his, and it feels like something in her chest is clawing to get out.
He kneels on the ground in front of her and she follows him, folding herself into the length of his body like she hadn't done in a hundred years, and his hands leave hers to wrap around her. His breath is on the top of her head and his fingers card softly through her hair. She grasps onto his haori and swears that she'll never let go.
It takes what seems like hours to find her voice, but eventually the words fall out of her mouth, "I only ever wanted you to stay."
"Then I won't ever leave again." He says it as easy as breathing, and she can't help but duck her head into him, giggling wetly.
"Stupid, stupid Gin. Is that all I had to say?" She unclasps her hands from the front of his haori and moves to wrap her arms around him, pulling herself closer. "If you aren't going anywhere, then I won't either." She moves her head back to look at him, and goes a bit crosseyed when she realizes how close their faces are. When her eyes are able to focus, she smiles. He looks soft. Happy. She pokes him in the cheek. "You still need to talk to Kira, Gin. Don't forget."
His eyes crinkle in a smile she knows is genuine. Only she gets to see this side of him. She wishes he would show it to other people. "I won't forget."
The finger poking into his cheek softens into what a more well-adjusted person may be brave enough to call a caress. Either way, she would have to be blind to miss the way he melts into the touch. "Promise?"
"Promise."
TIMELOOP FIC!!!!!!!!
this one doesn't actually belong to just me!!! its owned equally by @babygirlifier with some input on Rukia from @toomanydoors !! this one is specifically a rock musical bleach au, and the loop starts with momo and aizen in the office together, and ends with either momo dying or aizen escaping. its a whole lot of momo death, momo getting stronger, and momo coming into her own as a person separate from what aizen created her to be. of course, there is a lot of gin in this fic. he kills her a lot. but he's also a very strong ally once she figures out what she needs to say to him to get him to listen. there is a LOT about this fic that makes me insane, and a lot of ways that characters experience the wide array of horrors that the 3 of us are able to cook up. ill give you a fun little ginran moment though. of course.
blurb: "Just just imagining momo and rukia sitting off to the side and giving gin and rangiku space while the two of them have their heads ducked together and are talking quietly. in all of momo's time in these loops, she's never seen gin look so... tender. rukia keeps looking over momo's shoulder, unable to take her eyes off the two of them for too long. its understandable, momo reasons. it's a strange experience to see gin duck his head into rangiku's space, to see him hold her hands with such gentle care.
Gin agrees to help momo. this is the final loop."

[Old Art] A Senior Administrator of the Orbital Guild, the international military organization tasked with the governance of the Human Sphere's stellar colonies under the Parity Treaty.
Candidates for the Guild’s vast bureaucratic machine are primarily selected by competitive examinations known as ‘the Civil’, held annually in every city/station with a Guild office. The prospective civil servants are graded both by their local colony chapter and the Guild’s central examination commission.
Highly promising candidates are fast tracked to 'the Central’, an advanced examination track with various specializations that determines placements in the Guild’s senior institutions, diplomatic corps and military, while mid-ranking examinees may opt for less prestigious positions in their home Colony.

Gas Miner
A lot of Merchant Cosmine spacers think a job on a gas mining ship would be relatively safe and cushy, but when they reach a gas giant they quickly find out that everyone has to do a rotation on the dive-prospectors.

Another art page getting general ideas out of my head before I forget them.  A little while back I introduced the Vega Mercator, a rouge planet converted to a capitol spaceship, as well as a faction that operates it called the Nomad Guild.  I wanted to introduce the other types of ships within the Nomad Guild fleet.   Starting with the largest of these, the Carrier is designed to be a mobile orbital habitat that can approach a planet without any disrupting gravitational effects.  Positioning itself in a safe orbit, it will open up its habitable platforms to be a display seen on a planet's surface.  During it's stationing visitors can travel up to the carrier for tours and access to a greater collection of tradable goods. Trips to and from the Carriers are performed by the landers.  These exceptional large spaceplanes have sections on either side that extend outward to allow passengers on and off the craft as well as showcase some of the wares the Guild brought during their current visit. The smallest spaceship here is the gatherer probe.  These are sent out ahead of any manned operation to inspect sites of interest for valuables such as minerals, fossils, artifacts, and the like.  It will collect samples of whatever if finds and launch them back to the main ship to be studied for their worth. These are conceptual and are subject to change. As always, comments and critiques are welcome.

Hiii! Your podcast recommendations have been so fun and helpful when trying to find new podcasts to listen! Do you have anything for fiction podcasts with women/non-binary protagonists?
sure thing! despite ostensibly being a Podcasts Guy I haven't actually listened to that many audio dramas in the grand scheme of things, so this will overlap somewhat with any general recs I have given out before, but:
the strange case of starship iris: firefly-esque scifi show. biologist violet liu is the only survivor of her research vessel's explosion and gets picked up by a passing ship who help her investigate what happened. explores the aftershocks and political consequences for if humanity won a space war.
midnight burger: quirky scifi/fantasy. after her restaurant closes down in the pandemic, gloria gets a job at an all-night burger joint, not realizing that it changes location in time and space for every opening. the plot goes in all sorts of directions every season, it's hard to give in an in-a-nutshell vibe description.
mirrors: scifi/mystery. in three different locations in three different time periods, three women start seeing the same ghost and make audio logs about it. if you're willing to dive in on that description alone, please do. it's a really short listen and it is my number one recommendation for anything of its length and quality.
alice isn't dead: americana horror. keisha, a long haul truck driver, can't accept that her wife is dead and goes on a mission to find her. I keep starting and stopping this one because it's objectively really good but just never seems to fit my moods so I can't give much overarching description, but it is scary as hell and I would listen to jasika nicole read a grocery list.
trice forgotten: nautical period drama. jaded ex-pirate alestes just wants to keep herself to herself as she sails her merchant ship around the indian ocean, but nooo she keeps picking up these pesky "crew mates" who "need help" and are "useful to have around." has some extremely good scenes of toxic yuri.

ten books to know me
Rules: 10 (non-ancient) books for people to get to know you better, or that you just really like.
tagged by @landwriter, who has some gorgeously soft recs [like their sandman dream/hob fic] here! mine are uh, mostly not, so. be warned XD
where the sidewalk ends by shel silverstein. probably the oldest book i physically own, gifted me by a family friend. such memories of chatting to her about danny the champion of the world and the phantom tollbooth and etc, it was formative in so many ways! crediting this book for the fact that i’ve never been scared of poetry, for one.
the city & the city by china mieville, introduced to me by my current partner. the one before that was a mitch albom kinda guy and the one before that was a carol ann duffy and the one before that was a jeanette winterson. all of whom there is a place in my heart for but yes: scifi/low fantasy spec fic! if i could only read one genre of fiction it would be this. no i have not read babel and i will soon!! also: oryx and crake and mmmm cloud atlas.
the little prince by antoine de saint-exupéry. fun fact: i first read this book in chinese.
the ender’s game series by orson scott card — if i had to pick one it might be xenocide, han qing-jao my baby. the other formative childhood fave i don’t talk about enough: artemis fowl!
we need to talk about kevin by lionel shriver. idk i am frightful and this book is a comfort read. my complicated feelings re. possibly ever becoming a parent, don’t ask me about them!
chronicle of a blood merchant by yu hua. love some horrible histories x blaaaack humor.
the time traveler’s wife by audrey niffenegger. my kinda romance 🥰
neil gaiman’s short story/essay collection view from the cheap seats. picked this up secondhand, gave it away, would love to own again someday. one of my fave essays in this book: all books have genders. also: the salmon of doubt by douglas adams and ursula le guin’s the found and the lost / the unreal and the real.
ted chiang’s exhalation gets a special mention for being my desert island book. every single story is so thought-provoking.
battle royale the manga. enjoyed the novel too, oh lighthouse massacre my beloathed.
AND on that fun note: tagging people with cool fic taste @allalrightagain @bluesundaycake @consistentsquash @fanfiction-thesis @lumosatnight @mblematic @phantomato @slashmarks @sleepstxtic @thistlecatfics @unspeakable3 gimme books! talk to me about the Books That Made You! anyone else who wants to play, too, tag me if you do :D

This one is a bit unorthodox, so pls bear with me:
All that talk about colds and space made me think of a person in some random scifi scenario. They travel by themself, transporting goods and acting as something inbetween mailman and merchant.
Since they travel by themselfs, their immune system is not the sturdiest, as it remains untrained. Once every few months, they dock at one of the bigger trading posts to deliver something or pick up goods and first thing for them to pick up is a cold every damn time.
I like to think that, since this is an 'everything goes'-scifi scenario, that ppl will openly share whatever kink or interest they have and since the merchant is guaranteed to catch something awful whenever they dock, they have certain clients with rather... special interests as well.

2, 5, 12, 28 for basil?
What genre (not counting the one they’re in) would your OC thrive in?
Scifi maybe- Not like spacefaring scifi though.
What song(s) do you associate with your OC?
Ermmm...
The playlist-
What animal would your OC have as their His Dark Materials daemon?
I honestly do not know much about his dark materials but purely off of the animal she actually is based on or the pet she has in game...
Either a skink or diadem leaf-nosed bat <:)
What is your OC’s Warrior Cats name?
Oh this one is silly. BasilLeaf. Lol... Because she would want to be a medicine cat.

books i read in jan 2024
Tumblr media
[these are all short + casual reviews - feel free to ask about individual ones if u want my full thoughts or ask for my goodreads!!]
the tail end of winter break + flights to the other side of the world and back + two week vacation means i am so fucking back, baby
prince's gambit (reread) + king's rising (reread) + the summer palace + the adventures of charls, the veretian cloth merchant + green but for a season - c.s. pacat ★★★★★ (fantasy romance)
nothing like tearing through the whole capri series to start off your year by changing your brain chemistry yet again. it's not a perfect series but it is so good at the erotic and the romantic and the perfect push and pull of tension !!
locklands - robert jackson bennett ★★★★★ (fantasy)
fantastic and utterly satisfying end to the series. i'm always trying to pitch these books as much as possible because the magic system is one of my favourites ever and rjb has an understanding of themes if i've ever seen one
[reread] jane, unlimited - kristin cashore ★★★★★ (YA fantasy)
still love this genre-bending mind-fuckery of a book. it's an interesting take on grief and a positive look at the potentiality of both the universe and individuals
a beautifully foolish endeavor - hank green ★★★★★ (scifi)
utterly shocked considering how little i liked the first book but i found this one compulsively readable and absurdly fun. it still reads like someone very online wrote it but i enjoyed the ride this time
the rest of us just live here - patrick ness ★★★★☆ (YA fantasy contemporary)
solid and pretty standard YA contemporary that has some bonus fun fantasy that made it much easier to swallow for someone who doesn't like YA contemporaries very much
a power unbound - freya marske ★★★★☆ (historical fantasy romance)
decent conclusion to the series and a hot romance that kept me invested, but the "plot" dragged and took up so much pagetime
bloodmarked - tracy deonn ★★★★☆ (YA fantasy)
obvious second book syndrome with wacky pacing and a bloated cast of characters, but it handled a lot of trope-y YA stuff pretty deftly and i am deeply curious where this plot is going to lead
moon of the turning leaves - waubgeshig rice ★★★★☆ (post-apocalyptic)
decent sequel that trades in the horror of the first book for a more survivalist bent. i don't think it's particularly interesting if you don't already like these sorts of books, but i do, so i liked this one as well
the trial of henry kissinger - christopher hitchens ★★★★☆ (political non-fiction)
def not kissinger for babies but the writing was solid and easy to follow, even if i knew nothing about the politics going in
eileen - ottessa moshfegh ★★★☆☆ (thriller)
relentlessly unpleasant to read but the frame story gave it an interesting flair. i've always found ottessa moshfegh's works worth reading even if i don't exactly enjoy them
annihilation - jeff vandermeer ★★★☆☆ (scifi)
extremely slow to start but it does eventually cohere into something? the writing was beautiful and i understand why everyone highlights it as atmospheric
small things like these - claire keegan ★★★☆☆ (historical)
complete nothing of a book to me. wasn't good, wasn't bad, totally fine, just didn't make me feel anything and i probably won't ever think about it again
the perfect crimes of marian hayes - cat sebastian ★★★☆☆ (historical romance)
the plot of this book was so so bad and unfortunately rather important to the flow but it did feature two character tropes and a romance that were exactly my type of shit. i would describe this as "if you closed both eyes and ignored the plot entirely it's almost an astrid/wulf fic" and that's how i had fun
you made a fool of death with your beauty - akwaeke emezi ★★★☆☆ (romance)
the banter and relationship with the FMC's best friend was by far the best part of the book. i liked the premise of the main romance, but it ended up being insta-love despite the incredible setup. also read like it was so concerned with being beautiful that it forgot to be horny or passionate or even interesting
lumberjanes vol. 1-2 - n.d. stevensen et al. ★★☆☆☆ (children's graphic novel)
tried to be coherent in the wrong sorts of ways and didn't lean into childish whimsy the way it should have, but the art was cute. it wasn't bad but i'd never choose to give it to a kid
