Plant of the Day
Monday 25 December 2023
Last year my friend was given a Citrus × aurantium f. aurantium (sweet orange) as a houseplant by her daughter. It grew in a conservatory and this small tree flowered filling the house with scent. Then six fruits developed, ripened and now have been made into delicious jars of marmalade in time to be festive gifts. This is my wonderful jar. The sweet orange is a hybrid between Citrus maxima (pomelo) and Citrus reticulata (mandarin).

Nicotiana sylvestris (evening-scented tobacco)
Evening-scented tobacco was introduced from Brazil to the United States in the mid-1800’s and soon became popular for its wonderful fragrance. As its name suggests, sniff this flower at high noon and it’s odorless but come back after the sun goes down and it’s perfume is divine. As you may have guessed, evening-scented tobacco is pollinated by moths.
We’ve grown white Nicotiana sylvestris in flowerpots for decades However, this year we decided to take a walk on the wild side and we bought a red one instead. Wouldn’t you know it, as I was moving the plant around to get that perfect angle, one of the blossoms fell off. No problem, what a great opportunity to see a moth’s eye view of the evening-scented Nicotiana.

the minute rain hits the ground in certain places, it activates our senses, reminds us where we come from, reminds us where we're headed, too
today, i'm in the garden, hands empty, eyes closed, immersed in this heady scent, this dusky, earthy almost-ness
today, i am a wolf, nostrils flaring, muddy pawed
breathing—tasting

Great for a delicate display in a meadow, border or in a woodland garden is Tulipa sylvestris (wild tulip). This bulb only reaches a height of around 25cm and has yellow, lemon-scented flowers, in early spring.
