another post-script on A Journey to Love and why I am ok with the Sad Ending™

what's truly messed up but also the reason the series even WORKS is that ultimately all of these characters could have lived if they stuck to their original agenda and outlook.

The delegation squad originally are like fuck everything & everyone, we are here and probably gonna die for ONE THING - clear the names of (Qian: avenge 🔪) the fallen Liudao Hall comrades. They don't care much about the emperor except for a means to an end, aren't expecting to fix anything for the Wu state by going thru this bullshit, and they hate everything about An, who they have been playing spy games with for years, which cost them family members, and they just lost 80K soliders from the war.

But in the last string of episodes they found the bodies & their brothers, gave the death rites, and THEY HAVE THE EDICT. The original goals, they're all done! They could pretend "I do not see it" and be just like the border city officials who aren't taking action with the excuse that they didn't see proof of any invasion threat, blah blah it was implausible. The guys and the cowardly Wu emperor could just go home.

Ning Yuanzhou always planned to do this 1 final act and nope-out. He could have left with Ruyi and let the geo politics play out as they may.

Ruyi had already achieved her empress revenge arc. She'd even gone a step further to free the White Sparrows.

But each character makes their final choice to fight & die because they are not the people from the start of the journey. Every episode we watched lead them to be the people who would make this choice. Opening the princess YY & Ruyi's eyes to the world opened the Hall squad's eyes as well. Being introduced to people from An as fellow humans who can hurt and laugh and want. Finding allies and commonalities. Questioning why. Mentoring a young royal who wants to understand what leadership means and what do we owe to each other. Modeling for Ruyi what partnership and teamwork means. Getting that damn edict because the Scarlet Guard leader returned an honorable act with his own, stepping back from guarding the Wu emperor. Sorta adopting a volitile An duke with violent attachment issues.

Following their original objectives would have lead to a bittersweet but happy ending as the core ensemble ride off into the sunset with their victory and let An & Wu burn, who had taken so, so much from them. But it wouldn't have been true to the characters we got to know & saw change from the experiences we shared with them. The intentional, ultimate sacrifices underline the lessons learned and lend greater meaning to its themes.

I've now finished all available story content for Pokémon Scarlet in my replay, and with everything fresh in my mind again, I want to share some Thoughts™. Note that these are only thoughts on the storytelling, and not on any other elements (gameplay etc).

First, on the original scenario:

While I don't think that this is the greatest story in a Pokémon game yet like some others do (I still think that honor goes to BW), I can definitely see why SV's story appeals to those that it does appeal to. Arven's story is heartwrenching, and Penny's / Team Star's is relatable to anyone who has had to suffer bullying, only to be labeled the bully themselves when they try to do something about it. Nemona's story unfortunately suffers the most; you don't really get any insight into who she is or what her struggles are until post-game, and even then you have to seek her out to discover any of that. It makes sense, in a way; Nemona is mostly just there to give the player incentive to tackle the Gym challenge. Still, it's unfortunate because I think that her character (an Ace in every way who is therefore isolated from her peers as a result) is one that would have been really interesting to explore in more depth.

Having said all that, I think the biggest detriment to SV's storytelling is that it keeps the three rivals completely separate until the trip into Area Zero, with the exception of a bit of bickering between Nemona and Arven in the beginning (and a tiny bit of Penny's added in when you're about to leave on the Treasure Hunt). I think most in the fandom agree that the trip into Area Zero is SV's strongest point; unfortunately, none of the Area Zero stuff is truly relevant until that point, and the rivals don't get to talk to (and therefore befriend) each other before that point, either. As a result, it makes their friendship in the end feel forced / weak. They have a few conversations in Area Zero and now they're besties? I don't really buy it. Especially since they spent the first few conversations antagonizing each other.

Instead, I think it would have made everything a lot more cohesive to have the three of them interact with each other at different points throughout the main story. Either they could happenstance cross paths whenever one of them is talking to the player, or the game could have taken a truly original track and have the school send players out on the Treasure Hunt in groups of four, grouping Arven, Penny, Nemona, and the player together in one group to travel across Paldea together. Of course, it would seem a bit busy to have all three rivals constantly running alongside you, but there could have been a base camp that all four would return to at the end of the day, and we could have had interactions between them there. Showing the three rivals befriending each other over the course of the entire Treasure Hunt would have made them cementing their friendship in Area Zero (and things like Penny calling Nemona and Arven treasured friends on par with the Team Star bosses) make a whole lot more sense.

A quick aside on Team Star — I think Game Freak fumbled this storyline pretty badly. Penny's Not Reveal aside (who didn't know she was Cassiopeia, like . . . really), it seems that what Game Freak wanted with Team Star was to make the whole team, grunts included, victims of rumor mongering. This is made apparent at the end of the Caph Squad segment, when Clavell brings up that there are rumors of Team Star bullying other students, and Carmen is like, "After hearing what we all have to say, do you really think that's the case?" And that's fine, except . . .

We are shown that Team Star grunts bully students at the start of the game.

Granted, it is only one scene. But our introduction to Penny is her being harassed by Team Star grunts to join up, and then them turning that aggression onto the player. It's contradictory to show us that some Team Star grunts do bully other students, only to then backpedal completely and say they don't. And I think that this could have been used as Penny's motivation; that, instead of being worried about her friends being expelled, Penny realized that the organization was way too big and that bullies were using it as a shield to bully other students, and that that's why it had to be brought down. Bringing this to the attention of the other bosses could have also been used as their motivation to step down, which would have made a lot more sense than the "well the rules say so." It would have further cemented the fact that they were victims of bullying themselves who would never want to see anyone else bullied again, either.

But back to the main story — aside from thinking that it is a waste that we don't get to see the rivals interact with each other and build their friendship up over the main story, I also think it is a waste that the absolute coolest part of SV's story (the Area Zero lore) is completely packed into the final segment of the game, bearing almost no relevance otherwise. I mean, true, Arven is searching for the Herba Mystica to heal Mabosstiff, and that comes from Area Zero. But we don't learn why he has that book, what relevance that book has, or what the professor was up to until the final segment of the game. We're told Area Zero is off-limits because it's dangerous, but aside from the fourth Titan battle (or was it the third?) we don't see any paradox pokémon on the surface or learn anything about the professor other than that they are Arven's parent and they invented the Tera Orb. And I think that is a waste; there is so much cool lore in SV, and the professors themselves are fascinating characters because they're not exactly good but they also aren't evil, but we just don't really get to engage with that until the very end of the story (and now the DLC). I'm not entirely sure how this could be fixed without completely reworking the story (though I'm sure I could come up with ideas if I found the time to think on it), but it's just disappointing that the best part of the story is at the very end.

All in all, I don't think SV has the worst story in the series. That dishonor still goes to XY. But I think that it's a shame that its strongest points (the rivals + the lore) are things that just didn't have the right amount of investment into them. I think that having the rivals at bare minimum get to interact in scenes throughout the three campaigns would have helped their characters and relationships and would have better sold the "they are besties now" ending to the Area Zero segment. An even better solution, imo, would be to have them all accompanying the player on the journey even if they aren't always on-screen together, with designated camping scenes at different points in the game, more little micro conversations (albeit ones better worked in; something like skits in the Tales series would work better than what we got in Area Zero), and perhaps continued arguing over which way the player should go next, since they all have their own agendas, too. And as for the lore, just being able to see more of an effect Area Zero had on Paldea would have helped with that a great deal. Have more paradox pokémon escaping and people freaking out about it, have the A.I. professor guiding an unwitting player into making the situation worse somehow. Something, so that we're given reason to really want to go into Area Zero at the end, versus just "well the professor said to, so I gotta."

Anyway, those are my thoughts on the storytelling in SV. There are a lot of weaknesses, but those weaknesses mostly stem from the potential that is there that was not realized. I will say that so far the story DLC has been a step in the right direction, especially where the Mossui siblings are concerned; the two of them knowing each other so well and having a pre-existing relationship does a lot of their characters, both individually and together. Now we just have to wait and see if the Indigo Disk DLC sticks the landing. I really hope it does.

But for now, I sleep.

Just saying: it brings soo much joy seeing someone get excited by Wanda after the whole cinematic experience.

That was my first encounter with the character and it really did not give a good first impression. And it only got worse with how they treated her and her own actor's obliviousness on the character's background (I will never say 'her character', she simply does not deserve that kind of recognition from me - yes, I am spiteful).

I do not know much about her 616 storyline, nor midnight for that matter, but despite that complete lack of knowledge I enjoy seeing you post about her. I may have originally come here for the Venom stuff but really anything you decide to share is what I stay here for.

Hi anon! Thank you for your kind words; Wanda really was one of the first characters I got into with Marvel, long long before I cared about anything arachnid-themed (unless it was Julia Carpenter, since she was one of Wanda's teammates, haha). I'm fortunate that I met her character via comics (thanks to my friend who dragged me to the LCS) so that got to be my first impression.

Wanda's an interesting character to try to get into, since she's so strongly tied to the Avengers. She didn't get a solo of any decent length until 2015... but I highly recommend checking out Scarlet Witch by James Robinson if you can. It's not perfect, but it's very good and it has a lot of nice art by different artists. It's a fun series!

A lot of people who like That™ version of the character seen in certain films and a mediocre television show will talk about "feats" and "power" and all that even in terms of the comics, but honestly I think all of that is a load of bull. Wanda's greatest moments have always been where she follows her heart, but also her head. She's a veteran Avenger, she's one of the most compassionate characters ever, she has had epic highs and some very low lows... but she always pulls through.

And when you get a good writer that really does her justice? Oh, that's just peak. That's the best.

(I also like when she just straight-up punches people - Avengers #186; Plot: Gruenwald, S. Grant, W: Michelinie, A: Byrne)

On the note of Midnight Suns, they kind of... tried? Like, it's hard to explain. It's not great, and I would prefer her hair to be several shades darker, but it could be worse, as far as adaptations go?

EDIT 8/4/2023: I previously criticized the game here for using Romanian for Wanda - this was a mistake on my part as it's been pointed out that she has spoken Romanian in the comics but it does not mean she is intended to be Romanian. I've also learned it's commonly spoken in the region Wanda is from. To my friend who pointed out my mistake, you have my thanks!

Anyways, I'm glad you've continued to stick around even as I've expanded beyond just Venom-posting. I confess, though, I've often thought about what it would be like to smash my two little interests here together... I think particularly in Midnight Suns-verse (mixed with a little 616, of course) Venom and Scarlet Witch could have an interesting conversation. (Let's be real, I'll probably write it.)

I also think about Poisoned!Scarlet Witch a lot. I think about the universe where she was Venom... what that must have been like... what their symbiosis was... many thoughts. I bet their joined form was awesome. Wanda has great style.

(Venomverse #3, #4, #5; Bunn, Coello - that last one is fine; the host and symbiote are both dead the second they get Poisoned 😔 Mania did them a favor.)

I’ve played through three of the characters I’ve created in Elden Ring so far (unga bunga Radahn Cosplayer who’s insistent on using Big Swords™ for the sake of being “cool”, Battle Mage Weeb that uses two katanas but is hemophobic to high hell and back, Bi Dragongirl Sorcerer with a penchant for fumbling her incantations and spells last second because holy shit how do I cast magic). They’re all based on OCs for individual “original” stories that my lazy ass will never continue working on I’ll probably continue ironing out the kinks for at some point.

Tangentially connected to the idea of a story, I have an idea to create a character based on a little Elden Ring fanfic shower thought; an OC who’s Miquella’s Shadow, like how Marika had Maliketh and Ranni had Blaidd. Obviously, Miquella probably didn’t need one considering he had the girlboss Malenia (literally named Blade of Miquella for a reason) but just to entertain the idea a bit—

First two arcs consist of some events pre and post-Shattering:

Creation of Miquella’s Shadow

Believing that the Golden Order will help alleviate Malenia’s Scarlet Rot, Miquella assumes the identity of St. Trina to help further spread its influence and the ways of fundamentalism

Fluff and other assorted things between the fluffy Shadow and the rest of the fam, Miquella’s faith in the Greater Will dampens heavily after time passes

Godwyn assassinated at the Capital, Ranni’s plan is further set into motion and Marika falls into despair

Not long after the Elden Ring shatters and war begins

Alliances are made with some juicy sibling strife between Miquella and Malenia as they go their separate ways, former working on a cure for the Scarlet Rot with the latter going off on a war crusade

The Shadow prevents the kidnapping of Miquella by killing all of Mohg’s Bloody Fingers

The mobilization of Malenia and Radahn’s forces in the Caelid Wilds, with Malenia blooming for the first time and releasing the Scarlet Rot

Some extra Demi-God political conflict, plots are furthered and more problems begin to arise

Everything regarding the shitshow called the Frenzied Flame

The realization that Godrick must’ve had Godwyn’s body hidden beneath Stormveil Castle for one specific but otherwise deadly reason that will definitely be brought up in the fic if it ever gets conceptualized fully *cough* Godrick grafting the body of the Prince of Death onto himself *cough*)

I also have some potential plans to also include current Elden Ring stuff (i.e. Tarnished Champion) among others things, so yea. Dunno where I’ll go from that point on but at least the bare structure of the idea exists.

aaand here's one of my pieces for the Hermitshipping Big Bang!!

This is for a Nature Wives fic by the amazing @honorsongs!!! No I didn't base my entire piece around like one line in chapter 5... :D Here's the link to the fic!

I had a blast working with Honor and the other artist on the team, @whimsical-roots!

Under the cut: another version without the pink lighting, which is what I had originally planned and was on my preview!

The pink lighting was totally not an impulsive decision I made one evening at like 11pm... I don't regret it though, I love both versions :D On this one you can see the bi colour palette better! (The bi colours were kind of accidental, but I just ran with it)

This event was amazing, lots of love to everybody who participated<3 @hermitshippingbigbang thanks for organising this!!!!

These Drinkstagrammers Are Throwing a Month-Long Tiki Party, and You’re Invited

As people settle in for the long, dreary winter, certain drinks are especially comforting. Eggnog, mulled wine, hot cider, and peaty Scotch unfailingly warm the soul, no matter the temperature outside.

Boozy fortification takes many forms, though. A growing group of bartenders on Instagram, known as Tiki the Snow Away, is rejecting typical wintertime beverages in favor of tropical rum drinks.

The group convenes digitally each year to create and share tiki cocktails throughout January. Early entries for the 2019 iteration range from mid-century-inspired originals, courtesy of Portland, Ore.-based @Migsology, to absinthe-spiked swizzles from @servedbysoberon in Ghent, Belgium. There are no real rules or prizes, only the promise of digital community, good cheer, and lots of rum.

Winter tiki is one of those ideas that makes more sense the longer you think about it. Tiki cocktails are escapist, perfect for the snowed-in drinker whose only diversions are political headlines or another Netflix marathon.

Many of the same baking spices in wintry drinks like cinnamon, vanilla, and nutmeg are perfectly at home in tiki concoctions. And when you just don’t have the energy to trek through the tundra to meet your friends at a bar, Tiki the Snow Away connects you to digital pals via Instagram.

Dani DeLuna, known to her followers as Home Bar Girl, launched the group in 2015 as a repudiation of eggnog.

“I had competed in an eggnog competition that December so I was really over all the heavy sh*t we all drink during the cold part of the year,” DeLuna says. She remembers thinking, “‘F*ck this. I want to make Daiquiris.’” That impulse evolved into a quest to make tiki drinks throughout the entire month of January.

When DeLuna polled her IG followers for a name for her project, fellow drinkstagrammer Nic Titze provided the moniker. DeLuna spent the first year casually hashtagging posts to see if anyone was interested in playing along. In year two, she says, Titze’s involvement hashtagging and reposting helped the concept take off. In 2018, the group’s fourth year, users submitted 1,000 tiki drinks by using the official hashtag, #tikithesnowaway, and DeLuna now reposts a sampling on the Tiki the Snow Away page.

Last year Titze even crafted custom art for the group, printing up swag like coasters and swizzle sticks. He and DeLuna strategically sent them to drinkstagram influencers in the early days of January to drum up even more interest. Titze has even crafted updated versions for this year’s celebration.

The digital movement has leaked into the real world, too. In 2018, DeLuna held a pop-up event at the King Tai, a bar in Brooklyn. Earlier this month, she collaborated on a menu for the Sunken Harbor Club, a weekly tiki event at Fort Defiance, also in Brooklyn.

Tiki the Snow Away remains mostly digital, though. DeLuna has personally met only a few participants.

The group’s digital-first approach works to its advantage. Along with other home bartending groups on Instagram like Home Bar Awards, We Have the Last Word, and Secret Santé, Tiki the Snow Away gives global cocktail enthusiasts a chance to come together and share their exploits in ways they couldn’t IRL. Propelled by influencers like @mmydrinks and @servedbysoberon, these remarkably talented home bartenders experiment with unconventional methods, promote local spirits and drinking traditions, and connect with like-minded drinkers across the globe.

“For all of us who like doing drink stuff, it’s way more fun when it’s a whole group thing,” DeLuna says. “Isn’t all of this social media stuff kind of self-gratifying anyway? If a lot of people come through and like your post because everyone’s participating in a big group thing, you get a little self-confidence boost, too.”

How to get involved

If you’d like to start posting your own drinks to Tiki the Snow Away, you’ll need a few — O.K., a lot of ingredients.

When you’ve crafted a tiki drink you’d like to share, simply hashtag your post with #tikithesnowaway and wait for the sweet, sweet likes to roll in.

Here’s what you’ll need:

At least five rums

“To wade into tiki, you really need five different rums,” DeLuna tells VinePair. “You need an overproof rum. You need something that will give you length, maybe something from Barbados or something like Ron Barrilito that’s an easy, dry, mellow rum. You need some funky Jamaican rum (which could also be your overproof rum). People suggest a 151 demerara rum because it is in a lot of drinks. And I would suggest having a blanc rhum agricole.”

Winter produce

Depending on where you live, fresh produce in January might sound like an oxymoron. Fortunately, there are solutions, even for those who spend January in below-freezing temperatures. Blood oranges, grapefruits, and persimmons all provide tiki’s requisite bright pop of flavor.

“Use the weird citrus that’s in season now,” DeLuna says. “Don’t attempt to use fresh pineapple because it’ll be nasty.”

Spiced syrups

“The thing I like to emphasize is that we’re in the middle of winter so people should be doing more spiced stuff than usual,” DeLuna says. Lots of baking spices make great syrups. DeLuna suggests arming yourself with cinnamon, vanilla, or cinnamon-vanilla syrup.

Fortified wines

DeLuna also encourages home bartenders to use sherry, port, and vermouths to lengthen their drinks. The right bottle of fortified wine can add wintry flavors and depth while keeping things (relatively) light.
