今日のおはジャズ「Jazz Goes To College」Dave Brubeck '54

YouTubeで聴いたデスモンドのソロが余りにも素晴らしく探してたアルバムを遂に見付けた！と思い、家に帰って聴いてみたら、お目当ての曲が無い。あれ？と思いよく調べると探してたのは「Jazz Goes To "Junior" College」でした。まぁ、なんともややこしい。

しかし、聴いてみるとこのデスモンドもかなり良いのです。50年代前半のデスモンドは、まだ野放図に思い付いた事を演っていて(とは言え滅茶苦茶ではなく、ちゃんとモチーフを発展させたり、理路整然としたソロ)、「デスモンド」そのものがブランディングされる前のクールジャズ。その後どんどん無駄な音を切り詰めて純米大吟醸の様な、「旨過ぎて水」みたいになってしまうと、僕には少し物足りない。やはり、この辺りの雑味を含んだ演奏の方が僕の好みです。

しかし、この終始クールな演奏、フラジオ辺りの高音でも普通の音域と変わらず甘美で円やかな音色には憧れます。自分もフラジオでがなりたく無いのだけど、中々難しい。そして、この極端にクールな演奏にも関わらず客席は大盛り上がりで、ソロが終わる度に大歓声が起こります。客層をインテリ層に絞ってマーケティングする為に開始した「大学巡り」が、ブルーベックの目論見通り成功したのがこのレコードから伝わって来ます。

肝心のブルーベックはコードソロが多く、たまにモンクの影響を感じさせる所も有って驚くのですが、やはり僕は苦手です。しかし、デスモンドという的確な相方を見つけ、この独特なバンドサウンドを作り上げたのは偉大だと思います。
