Artificial Intelligence Bill in Florida Session
Florida's 2024 legislative session is set to begin on January 9, with bills filed regarding the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in media. One proposal (HB 757) aims to amend defamation law to allow for lawsuits if AI-generated content leads viewers to believe something false about a person. Another (SB 850) requires disclaimers on political advertisements using AI content. Another (SB 972) proposes the creation of an Artificial Intelligence Advisory Council. The Legislature aims to establish a uniform policy regulating AI's public and private use. However, legal and AI experts argue that the technology is so new and rapidly evolving that there are numerous legal uncertainties related to the First Amendment.

Postcards from Snagglepuss: Two Interesting Museums to Tampa
Still working our way along the Tamiami Trail, alias US 41, Crazy Claws and I, in service to the cause of Wisconsin Dells down Florida way ... and last time, we were parked close to the beach in Punta Gorda, front seats structured to become beds and sun roof pulled open to get some of those wonderful gulf breezes. Which may have stoked our appetites to such extent that we didn't quite realise it was morning until the dawn came along shrouded in fog. By which time it was more like 7:45. So what made us doze off all that well?
And doze off so well, in fact, we felt compelled to find ourselves a decent little breakfast place in Punta Gorda by "asking the locals" to point us in the direction of a decent such, no fast food nor anything in the vein of Denny's. Which we were able to find in a shabby corner of downtown near the beach--and boy, were the portions generous, the offerings tasty and even the coffee managed to turn out rather well. So well, in fact, we were able to get some to fill our travel mugs before heading back on the way with advice that, as we were heading towards Tampa, it might not be a bad idea to kill time at the Sarasota Classic Car Museum ... and, once we got to St. Petersburg, at the Dali Museum. As she put it, "Busch Gardens is just as campy as the Orlando Theme Parks, if you ask me."
"As a matter of fact," I added, "we have plans on going to Weeki Wachee as well."
"WEEKI WACHEE?!!" the waitress incredulously thundered. Only to pace herself and remark, "Oh, those mermaids--I once set my heart on trying for that company when I was a little girl back somewheres in Alabama, only I couldn't master a real serious deep dive as is part of the act. So I wound my way down to Punta Gorda and work in this fleabag of a joint ... uh, one more thing--"
"And that is--?"
"When you get to Weeki Wachee, tell the mermaids that Janine from down Punta Gorda way says hi."
"And I certainly will," Crazy Claws replied. "But then again, I don't think Tommy Bartlett would've done well with an underwater show in the artificial waters of Lake Delton, let alone the waterski show. Which, from what I heard, got inspired by the Cypress Gardens such--only now, Cypress Gardens has become LEGOLAND Florida."
"But not before inspiring the Wally Gator title sequence," I added.
"True, true," Crazy Claws shot back. "And I'd take Noah's Ark over Mt. Olympus back in the Dells; the latter's too arrogant, and besides, Noah's wavepools are just this cat's style. Big Kahuna especially."
Which gave the waitress such a laugh as we went on our way ... and I admit that, as we were driving up 41 towards Sarasota, that the laughs couldn't have been as incredible. Still, we had to find our way to the Sarasota Classic Car Museum, which evolved from the old Bellm's Antique Cars and Music of Yesteryear from back in my time on the box ... and though it may have been rather cheesy-looking, I have to admit that such automotive history on display can get to be impressive. Even if we couldn't find any of the Wacky Racers vehicles on display, including Dick Dastardly's 00 or, for that matter, Penelope Pitstop's Compact Pussycat. Or even the Original Banana Buggies of The Banana Splits, though rumour had it that they were in some museum somewhere near Wall Drug devoted to classic film and television autos; on the other hand, you couldn't help but miss John Lennon's psyched-up Rolls Royce ... or even the Mini Cooper of Paul McCartney ... or even the Rolls-Royces of the Ringling circus family, not to mention a Pierce-Arrow as belonged to the Ringling family (after all, the Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus moved their winter quarters from Baraboo to Sarasota in 1917, as Crazy Claws was quick to point out).
Admittedly, it was still morning, but getting closer to noon as were finishing up our time in Sarasota--but then again, it was getting to be time to do another round of brochure passouts in Beautiful Downtown Sarasota, where the very connexion of the Ringlings to the Dells area was brought up somewhat. As well as pick up a fresh load of brochures for passing out, alerted by a text message ... howbeit at a dodgy Pack-n-Ship-type shop near the dog track, as it turned out. Still, we were able to find our way back to the Tamiami Trail, which wasn't exactly identified as such as we approached the Sunshine Skyway Bridge on I-275 over Tampa Bay. And looking out over Tampa besides, come to think of it; the sight impressive stunning both of us!!
And so we head over into St. Petersburg to our next destination: The Dali Museum. As in Salvador Dali, whose works, I have to admit, are something of a secret passion of mine. Not to mention his somewhat whimsical eccentricity about the world and the universe, as in those melting watches in several of his paintings. Still, you have one particular highlight as would rival the collections on display: That DNA Staircase as extends in a spiral from the cafe area to the Third Level ... and the view of Tampa Bay thus afforded!! What a monument to such eclectic whimsy ... even in the cafe at the base of the stairs, partaking of Spanish tapas and coffee. Which turned out rather well, even if the Serrano ham was somewhat new to me.
Heading out into the Dali's courtyard ... a cool breeze was coming in off Tampa Bay, and we couldn't help but take stock of what exactly was being accomplished. Or close to it; we got a call on my mobile indicating that our efforts were getting modest payoff. Including several as came about thanks to our presence at the Mallory Square Sunset Ceremony in Key West just days before. At least one such enquiry acknowledged that Crazy Claws' humourous repartee won her over. Not to mention a certain Mr. Peebles, perennially peeved about a certain Magilla Gorilla being sold--only to come back within a day or two when customers just couldn't deal with a gorilla for a housepet, as walked our way in the courtyard for a few moments to chat and discuss what was going on with us. And recognising that Wisconsin Dells was where Crazy Claws came from, he was quick to bring up some rather lively details about when Magilla G. came to the Waterpark Capital late in the summer season, munching away on sliders from Monk's Bar and setting something of a record in that regard. Just be thankful that the tourist crowds weren't looking at him rather dumb like, as if he was something of a center of unwelcome attention.
Prompting Peebles to be stunned into learning that Magilla was starting to become fond of sliders after all this time with bananas ("And to just imagine how Magilla could subsist all this time amazes me ...") ... as well as an offer to kill some time that evening at the dog track, hoping to sample some greyhound racing under the lights. Which, as it turned out, ended a bit moestly, winning $25 on an exacta in the sixth race on what Peebles thought was a sure thing--or so he was told at a local hangout for the winter crowd As for the Super Six Pool towards the end of the race, requiring your having to pick six winners running--not much luck there, even if it was worth the hype.
As for the night ... we have ourselves a decent steak dinner thanks to Peebles, and decide to park out close to St. Pete Beach, sleeping in the car. Or attempting to, at any rate, what with police there being rather heavy of late (or so it was heard) because of some bad drug deals....

Iso Rivolta Varedo Concept, 1972. When Piero Rivolta took over the Iso Company after his father passed away in 1966 he set about updating Iso's model range. Designed by Ercole Spada at Zagato, the Varedo was based on the 8th AMC AMX/3 chassis which Giotto Bizzarrini modified for Iso Rivolta fitting it with a 351ci Ford Cleveland V8 (in common with Iso's other models). However Piero Rivolta sold his company to Dr. Ivo Pera who had no interest in developing the Varedo and it remained a one-off. The restored car is now part of the collection at the Sarasota Classic Car Museum

From car enthusiasts, an elegy for Pontiac Pontiac's GTO was arguably the original muscle car. The car quickly became an icon. By Michael Pollick Published: Tuesday, April 28, 2009 at 1:00 a.m. The Pontiac division of General Motors -- whose GTO was so famous that it became a classic song of the '60s -- will bite the dust, the victim of the automaker's need to reinvent itself and stave off bankruptcy. For American car fanciers, GM's announcement Monday felt more like a wake than a strategy question. "You hate to see a long-term brand like that just go away into nothingness," said Martin Godbey, owner of Vintage Motors of Sarasota and director of the Sarasota Classic Car Museum. "It's a huge manufacturing concern that inspires nostalgia with a lot of people, and it is gone." Then-GM designer John DeLorean immortalized the brand in 1964 with the creation of the Pontiac GTO. A few arguments from Mustang fanciers aside, the GTO was the original muscle car, Godbey said. DeLorean "took a Pontiac Tempest, a mid-sized two-door production car, and he dropped a big motor in it, put cool wheels on it, a four-speed transmission and hood scoops, and you've got an instant muscle car." That same year, a rock-and-roll group called Ronny & The Daytonas enshrined the car in a hit song called "G.T.O." Godbey has two GTO convertibles for sale, including a black beauty with three deuces, a four speed and a 389 (a big V-8 engine). The price tag for this car, with 53,000 original miles, is $69,000. What about noncollectible Pontiacs? Will prices plummet? "It is not going to be as dramatic as one would think," said Jesse Toprak, executive director of industry analysis for the auto Web site Edmunds.com. "The reason is that the values for domestic vehicles have suffered so much in recent months that we have probably reached a minimum threshold." Warranties are not a problem for Pontiac buyers because the government has already promised to back the manufacturer's warranty. Parts should not be a big deal either, a GM spokesman said. "I would not be worried about that," said Tom Henderson of the GM Services and Parts Operation. "We keep parts on hand typically for seven to eight years after the cessation of vehicle production." GM's press release indicates that 2010 will be the last model year for Pontiac. "I think it is going to be a very smart idea to consider purchasing a Pontiac this year. You're going to get a lot of car for the money," Toprak said. For the last few years, GM has been pushing dealers toward consolidating so that they typically offer Buick, Pontiac cars and GMC trucks from one store. There are only a handful of stand-alone Pontiac dealerships left, said attorney Michael Charapp of McLean, Va., who has about 300 car dealers as clients. In Southwest Florida, for example, most of the economic ramifications from the demise of Pontiac already have occurred, except for the write-off of the marquee by businessmen such as Robert Geyer, president of Sunset Automotive Group. In 2006, Sunset bought the Stinnett Pontiac car dealership, which had been a Sarasota fixture since 1944. In February, Sunset acquired the Carl Black GMC franchise and moved it into its Sunset-Chevrolet-Buick-Pontiac operation at 1800 Bay Road in Sarasota. Calls to dealership managers in Sarasota, Bradenton, and Punta Gorda were not returned Monday. That might be because the dealers do not really know what to say yet. A manager at Arcadia Chevrolet-Geo-Buick-Oldsmobile-Pontiac said Pontiac dealers will not know exactly what is going to happen and in what sequence until GM holds an internal get-together via the Internet, expected soon. One of the biggest concerns facing some of the dealers is survivability of the Buick-GMC combination without Pontiac, Toprak said. That is because Pontiacs provided the most affordable cars in that trio of brands. "You are left with Buick and GMC, and those two brands are not having the best time these days," Toprak said. "The consumers who do buy a domestic car are going for a cheaper car,
which Buick does not have, and the consumers going for an SUV are going for the car-based SUVs, or crossovers, like the Ford Escape, which GMC does not have much of." Toprak said that if he were on a GM task force, he would cut all brands except Chevrolet cars and trucks, plus Cadillac and Buick cars. In addition to selling the Saturn and Hummer brands, already under discussion, that would mean dropping the GMC truck and SUV line, Toprak said. "There is very little difference between Chevy and GMC SUVs and trucks." The resulting lean, mean lineup would make GM more like Toyota, which offers only three brands: Toyota, Lexus and Scion. Toyota has only 1,200 U.S. dealerships compared with 6,000 for GM. For the U.S. automaker, "prices go down because there are way too many dealerships for the same brand in one area," Toprak said. He said he would keep Buick because it is an extremely strong brand outside the United States. "In China, it is a real status symbol to own a Buick." In the meantime, for car dealership owners, there is a need for emotional as well as financial healing. "We've been talking to all our GM and Chrysler dealers for several months now about the need to be as lean as possible to make it through whatever restructuring takes place," said Charapp, the dealer attorney. "These days I am a business psychologist as much as I am a lawyer. These people have poured their lives into these dealerships."

This car museum is a three-ring attraction
https://bestcaritems.com/?p=6885&utm_source=SocialAutoPoster&utm_medium=Social&utm_campaign=Tumblr The Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey circus earned its title as “The Greatest Show on Earth,” in part, because it provided not one, not two, but three rings of entertainment under its big top. You might say the same thing about the Sarasota Classic Car Museum, which is located in the circus’ long-time winter-weather hometown, the Florida Gulf Coast city of Sarasota. Indeed, the museum is located just across the Tamiami Trail (aka U.S. 41) from the acclaimed John and Mabel Ringling Museum of Art, and the car museum’s collection includes a quartet of cars formerly owned by the Ringling family. The classic car museum occupies the middle section of a triplex/three-ring building. On one side is a nightclub-style event center which offers live musical entertainment on weekends, a series of tribute shows offering tributes to such artists as Frank Sinatra, the Bee Gees, Jimmy Buffet, the Beach Boys, Motown and even Elvis. At the other end of the building is Vintage Motors of Sarasota, a collector car dealership. The museum was founded in 1953 and claims to be the second-oldest continuously operated antique car museum in the country, though not all of its vehicles are antiques. In addition to vehicles ranging from the turns of the previous and current centuries, the museum is home to the Rivolta Collection, the famed car-building family from Italy taking residence in Sarasota. The museum’s founders were brothers Herbert and Bob Horn, who in addition to running a farm and school-equipment sales business based in Iowa were car collectors who discovered Sarasota’s winter weather, brought down 70 vehicles from their collection and opened the Horns’ Cars of Yesterday museum, which featured not only cars but the adjacent Music Box Arcade, home to their collection of vintage music boxes.   The Sarasota Classic Car Museum The Sarasota Classic Car Museum The brothers sold the museum in 1967 to trucking company owner Walter Bellm. In addition to adding 20 cars from his own collection, Bellm expanded the music box building to house his collection of organs and other musical instruments, including a 17-foot-tall orchestrion, large instruments that is a virtual orchestra-in-a-box. With Bellm approaching nearing his 80th birthday, he sold Bellm Cars & Music of Yesterday in 1997 to Martin Godbey, a local car collector and, since 1989, a collector-car dealer. Godbey renovated the triplex building and moved his dealership into what had been the portion that had houses Bellm’s music instrument collection. “Hopefully we have something for everyone,” said Godbey, who recently acquired more than two dozen Ferraris and Porsches that will rotate through the museum’s display. The Sarasota Classic Car Museum Greeting visitors as they enter the museum is a 1905 Schcht, which appears to have been completely restored until you walk around and discover that half of it has been left in original — and aging — condition. Turn one way and there’s the Rivolta family collection. Turn the other way and there’s a blacksmith shop and the friction-driven CarterCar chassis that was displayed at auto shows in New York and Detroit in 1906. Three of the Ringling family cars were at the museum when I visited. The other was on loan to Dan Garlits museum in Ocala. In exchange, Garlits loaned one of his Swamp Rat dragsters to the Sarasota museum. Among the most striking of the museum’s vehicles is the 1937 Gougeon Streamliner, an aerodynamic Dymaxion-style vehicle built in Bay City, Michigan, by Ronald Gougeon, who became wealthy operating a chain of beauty parlors. The museum is open daily from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. For more information, including the schedule of musical performances, visit the museum’s website.
