I read somewhere (Twitter i think) that it was great that Sanji's dream is to find the All Blue, not to be the greatest cook ever, etc. And I have to agree.

First of all, I think that if he had been written as wanting to become the best cook, it would have quickly become gimmicky: I mean, even a great writer like Oda cannot do how many variations on quite a narrow theme (the anime has great filler arcs about it though as far as I can remember).

But it also further highlights Sanji's kindness and care. There is something casual to his approach to food: yes of course it is delicious (mentioned so many times) and it aims at serving Luffy in him becoming the pirate king. But he's not a snob about food?? Of course he will look for good quality ingredients and interesting new recipes, but as long as it feeds someone it's all that matters too. He knows that food is a basic need and he will make do with what he can find as well.

His dream of finding the All Blue is a way for him to try all the fish in all the seas, but it also drives him to go on this great adventure with Luffy, a more personal decision for someone who always feels like he gets validation from doing things for others.

And I just love that about him, and the way Oda managed to develop his character. Post-WCI Sanji is often interpreted by fans as purely selfless and kind and caring etc (which I love and is truly a part of himself), but I feel like we can bring a bit more nuance by taking into account his personal dream. In the end, he is a full-fledged character, one of the best written in the series because of that imo.

Poor, poor Drake

He’s confused when you wake him in the middle of the night with your conundrum, trying his best to console you when you turn away from him and ‘ueeuueee--’ yourself back to sleep after he took too long to process the frankly absurd proposition, he’s trailing question question marks when you’re huffy at him the next day for not taking it seriously, and the man is flat out astral projecting out of his body when the devil fruit incident happens months later

He’s not scared or put off by your transformation, really as a someone living on the Grand Line he should know to expect worse by now, but honestly Drake is so???

This is taking him out at the knees

Drake loves you babes, he really does, he just has NO idea what’s going on and at this point he’s too scared to ask

Buggy

He’s lifting up his head from half a hangover against the table and staring at you like you already had turned into a worm then and there, just--

“Babe, what the fuck??”

Buggy isn’t sober enough for this right now, he’d drained his working braincells in a drinking competition with Shanks earlier (he lost) and at best, he’d drag you to bed with him to avoid the conversation

He does find himself coming back to the thought over the next few days though, more consideration than anyone should really be giving it

Not that you’d hear it, but he’s devising a little enclosure for your worm self to live happily and care-free for the rest of their worm life, being tended to by Buggy and Buggy alone

When the actual fruit of the matter comes into play, Buggy is floored, reacting with his usual gusto and loud, overblown gestures at your massive transformation - literally

It’s with no contempt or judgement, of course, but his biggest worry first and foremost is how he’s going to make room for a giant worm (his beloved partner) on the Big Top, even as spacious as they’ve renovated it to be

Once you get a reign on your powers and it’s established that this is something that can be pulled out at will, there’s a resounding sigh of relief across the deck

But still - Buggy lifts you by your waist and spins you around with hands that float away from him; this was great! With a fearsome beast (said with all the love in his goofy little heart, muah muah) at his side, along with all the ‘goons’ he’d recruited along the way, Buggy the Star Clown Emperor was sure to be unstoppable!

He’s a getting a little carried away with it all, but rest assured you can at least take solace in the fact that his opinion and love for you hasn’t changed; whether this is an insult or a testament to your relationship is up for you to decide

Sanji

To be fair, Sanji is the most likely out of the three characters here to ask you that question first - it’s the insecure soggy little meow meow in him

Being asked, he’d shower you in dozens of compliments and reassurances, how you’d still be the most gorgeous worm in the world to him, oh how he’d shower you with the same affection he does day to day, twirling you in his arms and holding you close to ease your worries

In practice, however, he has trouble delivering on those promises

Apparently his fear of creepy crawlies do extend to worms, especially of hulking, 23ft ones with protruding feelers and tusks

Sanji can’t help the reflexive shriek that leaves him when you first transform, his sweet mon chéri now some lumbering eyeless creature from his nightmares

That said, you are still his beloved creme tart, but it’s going to take a long, l o n g while for Sanji to get used to this additional Zoan form of yours

2022 was certainly a year, and will always be for me a year I occupied some of my free time with an odd little obsessive journey. Taking a closer look at every panel of Okiku in One Piece. Idea being...she does a lot of fun subtle stuff. We’ve talked about folklore, world lit, connections with the rest of Wano and broader series, and all kinds of fun little references. We’ve come back from the from the brink of death together, saved a nation, lost a brother, and taken a nice relaxing bath before blowing off that battle people who are about to leave need to stay away from. I sure hope we see more Okikus along the way, but for the time being these are the 10 y’all liked best.

Under the cut I figured I’d go back and reflect, but first...I’ve had a lot of fun with this. Been an anime fan for like, 20 years now but never had my own little fandom project. Kiku’s special for me; already felt Robin was such a good personal tie but my god does something about a melodramatic prim and proper lady who somehow ended up like that despite a childhood keeping up with a bunch of brother figures resonate.

I love that my favorite is still #1. Spear tackling Kin is just...everything. Especially since we really do not see Kiku lose her composure that often in any circumstance. That was such a clean little early twist too. Just when you think the weird new girl’s going to bow out for a bit she pops back in making herself way more interesting. It’s also a great start to this running theme for her; the first time we see her with another Akazaya she’s putting that childish side on full display. It is kinda odd at the time, right? We’re used to Kin’emon being a major goof and before this Kiku’s been bubbly but incredibly mature. If each Act is a kishotenketsu plot, this right here is the biggest ten, or Yama.

Then in second is the other big one. Rising from a brutal injury. Think this one got a boost from the observation about Kin/Izo’s faces, it being the only time any of them use her full name. But you know...talking faces always kicked myself a little for not mentioning Kiku’s. Girl’s coming off pretty cocky during this segment!

Then...gonna be honest I’ve always been a little shocked about the one of Tsuru throttling Tama ending up #3. Early installment bonus helps and it seems like being a Kiku fan trends with stanning Tsuru. But it’s the early one people really dig. Don’t get me wrong, it’s hilarious. Here’s a thought I had later; initially I said how many times has Kiku seen this type of behavior out of Tsuru? No no no...Kiku’s probably been in Tama’s position getting throttled for being too humble and refusing food hasn’t she? Think a younger Tsuru ever dual wielded the siblings?

Thought it was cute to have a four-way tie for fourth. The three in red and the one of Izo’s grand entrance. Couple of weird ones, the innocuous Law one probably up here for being #100. Sanji, good memorable Akazaya panels. Seems we really enjoy ripping on Sanji here. So with Izo...was he like, perched up there waiting for Usopp to finish his speech? We’ve established these siblings understand the value of dramatic timing.

“DAIMYO!!” Is a classic Akazaya moment, though I like the procession more. And of course...the bath. Like, I’d be upset with y’all if the bath wasn’t on here. 1052 was a highlight of Wano for me. Didn’t really think about this as much before, but it’s interesting to see that shame motif quietly work it’s way in. We know that’s a pretty serious feeling to this group.

any thoughts on some One Piece Theories TM? Like the Red Line Theory or the Shimotsuki Zoro one

ahh this is an interesting ask! hrm... honestly i don’t know a lot of one piece theories! i’m not really one to theorize, normally i’m just there for the ride lol. i am also NOTORIOUSLY bad at seeing things coming, i have zero critical thinking skills when it comes to plot

HOWEVER i looked into the two theories u mentioned and they seem really cool! (UHH SPOILER WARNING IG)

red line theory - from what i saw, i think you’re referring to the theory that the one piece is gonna be a way to break down the red line? this theory is SO cool, and i really do think it has a good chance of being canon! the red line is one of the weirdest fucking parts of the one piece world, and i think it’d serve as a nice end to the series to have the unity in the world, and for everyone to be able to sail around and adventure as they please.

shimotsuki zoro theory - uhhhh this one i don’t find super interesting but it’s certainly possible! honestly i’ve never been the biggest zoro stan and i think it’d be fun if his Tragic Backstory TM got an upgrade lol. some of my favorite parts of one piece are the flashback backstory things (some of my favorites are law’s, brook’s, big mom’s, and fisher tiger’s) and zoro’s was kinda lacking? it’s not out of the realm of possibility for him to get an expanded wano backstory either, cause something similar happened with sanji and luffy

here are some other misc theories that i personally enjoy!

- the “d” stands for devil. i mean... it makes sense! especially since people say that people that have the will of d. are enemies of heaven or whatever it was. honestly it’s fucking hilarious to me that we still don’t know for sure what it stands for lmao. i was trying to avoid spoilers about it for so long only to find out that we STILL DONT KNOW

- pedro’s not actually dead. listen we didn’t see the body, there is such a high chance that he could still be alive knowing oda. if characters like pell and fucking pound cake can survive, pedro can too

- bonney has some sort of connection to big mom. they BOTH have pink hair, have the SAME lipstick, both have food themes.... if they’re not connected in some way i’ll eat my hat. bonney could be her daughter, cousin, etc, but knowing her df powers, she could be her sister, or even her grandma or something. also i love bonney im desperate to see more of her BONNEY STANS RISE UP

- blackbeard is just 3 dudes in a trench coat and thats why he can use multiple df powers
