On 5 August 1775 Juan de Ayala and the crew of his ship San Carlos became the first Europeans known to have passed through the Golden Gate strait, anchoring in a cove behind Angel Island, the cove now named in Ayala’s honor.

Everything You Need to Know About Window Tinting
Tumblr media
Window tinting is becoming increasingly popular among car owners, homeowners, and business owners alike. It involves applying a thin film of material to the glass surface of windows to reduce heat, glare, and UV rays while also providing privacy. If you're considering window tinting for your vehicle, home, or office, read on to learn more about its benefits, types, factors to consider, and maintenance.
Benefits of Window Tinting
There are several benefits to tinting your windows. First, it reduces the amount of heat that enters the interior of your vehicle, home, or office, making it more comfortable and energy-efficient. Second, it reduces glare, which can be especially helpful when driving or working on a computer. Third, it blocks up to 99% of harmful UV rays, protecting your skin and eyes from damage. Fourth, it enhances privacy by making it more difficult for people outside to see inside. Finally, it can also improve the appearance of your vehicle or building.
Types of Window Tinting
There are several types of window tinting, including dyed film, metalized film, carbon film, and ceramic film. Dyed film is the most affordable option and provides a dark tint, but it tends to fade over time. Metalized film is more durable and provides better heat and glare reduction, but it can interfere with a cell phone and GPS signals. The carbon film is a newer type of tint that provides a matte finish and excellent heat and glare reduction. Ceramic film is the most expensive option but provides the best heat and glare reduction while also blocking UV rays without interfering with signals.
Factors to Consider When Choosing a Tint
When choosing a window tint San Carlos, you'll need to consider several factors, including the laws and regulations in your area, your budget, your preferences for darkness and appearance, and the type of vehicle or building you're tinting. You should also choose a reputable installer who uses high-quality film and offers a warranty.
Tinting Laws and Regulations
Before tinting your windows, it's essential to check the laws and regulations in your area. In some states or municipalities, there are limits on the darkness of the tint, especially on the front windows. Violating these laws can result in fines or even the impounding of your vehicle.
Maintenance and Care
To ensure that your window tint lasts as long as possible, you should take proper care of it. Avoid using abrasive cleaners or scrubbing the tint, as this can scratch or damage it. Instead, use mild soap and a soft cloth or sponge to clean it. You should also avoid rolling down the windows for at least a few days after installation to allow the tint to fully adhere.
Window tinting San Carlos offers numerous benefits, from reducing heat and glare to providing privacy and protecting against UV rays. However, it's essential to choose the right type of tint, follow local laws and regulations, and properly maintain it. With the right care, your window tint can provide long-lasting benefits for your vehicle, home, or office.

Bean, I just read your fic "nobody wins a war" a couple days ago. It is so unique and well written. Could you tell us more about it? What happened after they move to San Francisco? Thank you.
It’s almost a year old now, and it’s still the fic I am most proud of to be honest! (x)
Max and Daniel move into a tiny one bedroom flat in San Francisco, but it’s all they need. They spend a while just… settling in. They have to do things like scout out a new busking spot for Daniel (very important!), find a new physiotherapist for Max (as the VA doesn’t exist yet), make friends in the community etc etc.
Not too long after they move Carlos gets injured in Vietnam, he’s discharged from the United States Army, leaving Charles alone out there. Max worries himself sick, he’s not there, Pierre isn’t there, Carlos isn’t there to keep Charles safe. He knows Charles won’t be coping, and he’s proven right when Charles appears on his doorstep late one evening.
Charles has been discharged on psychiatric grounds, and he’s in active addiction, which Max half expected. He’s seen what people do to cope. He doesn’t blame Charles at all.
For a while it’s really hard, Charles inhabits their sofa, screams at night, argues with Max during the day, and then cries. And cries. And cries.
Daniel and Max help him get involved in local rehab centres, there’s one that a member of the community has set up specifically for young gay men. It’s a good thing for Charles, a real turning point, and it is where things start to improve for him.
Over the years Daniel gets involved in lots of different types of activism. Max is more of a quiet supporter, but it works for the two of them.
When the war officially ends, Max cries deep heaving sobs of relief into Daniel’s shoulder. They take a walk out to the Golden Gate that evening, and Daniel encourages Max to climb up, hold the railings and scream out into the bay. He does, and then he kisses Daniel out there in the open.
Years later, Daniel is involved heavily in HIV/AIDS awareness campaigns and Max worries for him, worries about the names Daniel gets called, worries for their community. There’s not a huge amount of understanding and at the time so they also worry for their own health (they only sleep with each other and they are clean so it’s okay, but they don’t know that).
But one thing is for sure: they grow old together and their home is filled with song and laughter, and eventually Max’s nephews will visit from Eugene. They grow up knowing that love is love and Uncle Max loves Uncle Daniel and that sometimes people are mean but kindness is the future 🥺♥️

[Dozens] of Bay Area residents shut down the San Francisco #GoldenGateBridge in response to Israel’s bombing of #Rafah, to demand that President Biden stop supplying Israel with weapons and to call for an immediate #ceasefire.
-- Brooke Anderson, 14 Feb 2024
The protest, which began shortly after 7:30 a.m., halted traffic at the mid-span of the bridge for approximately 20 minutes and was cleared just after 8 a.m., according to Paolo Cosulich-Schwartz, director of public affairs for the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway & Transportation District. Chanting “Free Palestine,” protesters locked arms across all lanes of the bridge and unfurled a banner that said “Stop Arming Israel” and “Hands off Rafah.” “Our security staff were on scene within minutes and the protesters cleared soon thereafter without incident,” Cosulich-Schwartz said in an email. “No arrests are currently being reported by CHP.” A California Highway Patrol official added that there were “some possible scuffles between motorists and some of the protesters” but said no injuries had been reported.

More details about the ANCE Johann Sebastian Mastropiero, the dear ship of our heroes Beto, Ragua, Suisini and probably some more.
An HA-116 "Barrilete" class ship. Built by Haedo Astronáutica as a strategic multi-role transport, with production massively ramped during the Machine War to supply remote outposts. Widely licensed and appreciated by its rugged nature, there are thousands still on service, many on civilian hands.
Looks like a mix of the Space Shuttle and the Ilyushin Il-76, but in a retro space opera style (sleek yet all "burned" from lots and lots of atmospheric reentries). The size is about of a C-17 Globemaster, with some more crew space.
The engines are fusion rockets working on as of-yet undiscovered tech, but commonplace by the future of the setting (not more complex than modern jet engines). Once in space, to enter FTL, it docks with a drive ring in orbit (common for this kind of ships)
Full travel time for a standard mission, is about 3-5 days until you need refuelling. It all depends of course where and how you want to go but that's about the max without dangerously stretching it.
It takes off and lands from any kind of airfield, even unpaved ones; in fact, this is what the ship was designed for, to deliver any kind of cargo to any place, no matter how remote. As long as there's some kind of flatish surface, it can land and take off.
The interior is very, very cramped. It has 4 cabins for crew and 8 for passengers (with 16 seats/beds), but they are standard "pod" designs, roughy 2x2m; you get your own pod with two acceleration couches, a TV, a hilariously tiny bathroom, and that's it. Think a capsule hotel with some more space. It's not for luxury travel.
No artificial gravity either. Travel is relatively short so you don't have to worry that much about muscle degradation, but there might be some gym equipment stored around.
The cargo bay is the most spacious place, because that's what's the ship's for. It can fit up to 6 shipping containers or equivalent cargo (depends what's in).
When it's empty, it's fun to hang out there (not like there's much space in the ship)
Like I said, outside it's decorated in a fileteado style, with celeste, silver and red, the colors of the Esteloplatense Confederation. It might have some details reminding old Rioplatenses buses and trucks..
Inside, of course, it feels cozy. Beto, of course, has some malvón flowers, a estamptita of San Carlos de los Astronautas, a Mary statue and a crucifix (everything helps) and a flag of River Plate on the cockpit.
Beto's pod cabin is full of whatever memories and stuff he finds on his travels (all safely stored of course). Suisini's pod is basically a sun-room with crystals for focusing different wavelenghts of light, it kinda has a hippie vibe. Ragua has a bathtub, and she finds it depressingly tacky compared to what she's used to.
Now as for its service story (no dates, assumes all this happens around 600-700 years After Gagarin):
Built for the Machine War, served for years (on the command of Beto's grandfather) on many supply missions in the counterspin front, mostly supplying bases and building sensor outposts, but also in a few hostile landing missions.
Returned to the Confederation Astral Prefecture, served as a reserve transport ship for a few more years.
Refitted for civilian service and sold in an auction of surplus military equipment
Bought by a group of former pilots, including Beto's grandpa, who started a transport cooperative. Refitted and put to work once again.
After a crash, it languishes in an hangar at Aerolito for a few more years.
Beto takes a loan, repairs it and rejoin the coop, and it flies once again.
It should be roughly 40-50 years old. And still flying...

Given the size of Bianca's turf, I realized she'd need more than three capos to run it all, so I revamped a lot of things. Now, I may not ever write a number of them, but I do like to have the info on hand as it adds more depth. And I'm always a slut for deeper lore. Please remember that this is just how I visualize Bibi's turf/gang/whathaveyou and her rivals. I will not force this on others, especially those who are part of Passione and whom I interact with.

The city has ancient churches, narrow artistic streets, imposing palaces, and unique underground landscapes, many of which are situated within Zeppeli's turf. Naples is broken down into thirty quarters which are then grouped together into ten governmental community boards for administrative purposes. Zeppeli controls four of these administrative areas, for a total of nine quarters; these are marked in red above. Thus Zeppeli has eight capos, one assigned to each quarter with their share of soldiers. Now, you might be asking, Nana, you said there are nine quarters, so why only eight capos? Posillipo is watched over by Zeppeli's Underboss, Dante, himself.
1st municipality of Naples Posillipo An affluent residential quarter, located along the northern coast of the Gulf of Naples. Rocky, it is 6km (just over 3 miles) long and surrounded by cliffs with a few coves with breakwaters at the western end of the Bay of Naples. The stronghold of Zeppeli, palazzo Beatrice, is located here on the cliffs and is one of the safest properties within Napoli. Unless a certain spicy vampire is present in a particular verse. Chiaia An affluent neighborhood on the seafront, bound by Piazza Vittoria on the east and Mergellina on the west; one the wealthiest districts in Naples, with many luxury branded shops on its main street. It's also home to a business school, medical school, and a number of other public schools. A landmark is the large public park known as the Villa Comunale, developed in the late 16th and 17th centuries. San Ferdinando A southern district that includes the Royal Palace, Piazza del Plebiscito- the most celebrated square in Naples, the San Carlo opera house, and the church of San Ferdinando, from which the district is named.
5th municipality of Naples Arenella Sitting on Vomero Hill, above the city, and near the main hospital section, many years ago it was considered a place to "get away from it all". Vomero Up on a hilltop accessed by funicular, upscale, leafy, and dotted with gelaterias, alfresco cafes, and refined Italian restaurants; both chain and department stores cluster around Piazza Vanvitelli.
9th municipality of Naples Pianura Bound on one side by Soccavo and the other by the town of Pozzuoli, it's a lively residential area with archaeological sites like Roman mausoleums, and a Roman villa. Pizzaerias, dessert shops, and bars are in the historic center, where the 13th-century Church of San Giorgio stands in the main square. Bargain hunters often hit up the Mercatopoli Napoli Pianura thrift market. Soccavo A western quarter, bounded on one side by the area of Fuorigrotta and the other by the Camaldoli hill; at the base of the hill is a historic quarry, which gives its name to the area. While it's technically a division of Pozzuoli and not Naples, it was included within the administrative limits of Naples when it started being developed as a residential neighborhood in the 1920s.
10th municipality of Naples Bagnoli Beyond the confines of the original city, it's beyond Cape Posillipo, thus looking over the coast of the Bay of Pozzuoli. The North Warf is the longest promenade in Europe, while Città della Scienza is an interactive science museum for adults and children. Between the Astroni Reserve, which sits an extinct volcano, and the archaeological Terme area, there is Ippodromo di Agnano, the biggest racecourse in Italy and one of the oldest in Europe. Fuorigrotta Beyond Posillipo Hill, it is the most populated suburb of Naples, housing the San Paolo Stadium. There is a Roman bath, the Vesuvian Observatory, the oldest volcanological observatory in the world, and the Naples Zoo.
Within these quarters is Zeppeli's legitimate businesses: Restaurants, cafes, pizzerias, laundrettes, and nightclubs. Chiaia is the location of the five-star hotel, Beatrice; much like the palazzo was named for Bianca's grandmother, so too was Zeppeli's hotel chain, the first opening in Napoli back in the 50s. There is a Hotel Beatrice in New York, London, Tokyo, and Singapore, by 2001.
Of course, among all the glistening glamor, there is also the seedy underbelly of Zeppeli. Gambling dens, fight clubs, and whorehouses. But we'll get more into that later.

How does the MSB gang enjoy their summer break?
I like to think most of them would go on vacations with their families. (Usually to visit friends or extended family members.)
Carlos and Wanda both go to California to see their aunts/uncles/grandparents/cousins. Their families do run into each other a few times. Carlos enjoys places such as Monterey Bay, Muir Woods, and downtown San Francisco. Meanwhile, Wanda is there for the theme parks (and Monterey Bay as well).
Ralphie and his family go to visit his Uncle Brian in New England. They also go to at least one Boston Red Sox game, and they watch the latest summer blockbuster.
Phoebe's family (in my AU where she and Ralphie are not step siblings) usually goes to Northern Minnesota to see their relatives. Occasionally, Phoebe's Canadian or Australian cousins come to visit. One time, Phoebe and her dads flew down to Australia to visit Uncle Cecil (who was studying little blue penguins at the time).
In our AU where Phoebe and Ralphie ARE step-siblings, they do a lot of road trips. They make a point of stopping at national parks and "tourist traps." An empty SD card that Ralphie puts in his camera at the beginning of the trip is nearly full by the time vacation's over.
Also: Joxter the cat comes along with the Terese-Tennelli family on their vacations. (He is leash-trained, and likes riding in the car.)
Arnold's family goes on a small vacation-- probably not even out of state. If they did go out of state, they'd definitely try to visit some big science and history museums.
D.A. and her family also hit the museums and national parks. D.A. brings a TON of books (enough to last a few months, according to her parents!). She also stays up late to look at the stars every night.
Tim would visit his Aunt Joanne in San Francisco. While he's there, he might also run into Carlos and/or Wanda.
Wanda is in San Francisco visiting her extended family. Carlos and his family are there just for the museums, parks, and food. (Carlos's extended family lives more around the southern part of the state, near Joshua Tree National Park.)
Not sure what Keesha would do, but I think she and her grandparents would have a good time together.
And of course, before everyone goes their separate ways for vacation, the kids plan one last group activity. This could be going to a baseball game, going to see a movie, or even just a sleepover.

The cover for this album was taken during the White Night Riots in 1979 which were a response to the lenient sentancing of Dan White. Dan White assassinated George Moscone (the mayor of San Francisco) and Harvey Milk (one of the first openly gay elected officials in the U.S. & gay rights activist). White, who was a former police officer, was charged with voluntary manslaughter rather than first degree murder. The jury was predominantly white, heterosexual, and roman catholic and the police raised $1000 for White's defense. A peaceful march rose to an estimated 5,000 protesters. The police were ordered to hold the crowd back, but many began attacking the protestors and chaos ensued.
This night affected San Fransisco's LGBTQ community for decades, but also lead to many political changes. More queer politicians were elected and the number of queer people joining the police force also grew. Just thought this was a really important thing to talk about! Definitely recommend reading up on it and I will be too as this is about as much as I know.

#QSLfriday During the heyday of broadcast radio, receiving distant signals was a source of pride for many hobbyists. In 1941, a listener in Oakhurst, New Jersey, received a postcard confirmation from XECL, one of Mexicali's oldest radio stations. The station dates back to 1938, broadcasting with 1,000 watts of power near the California border. One of the early announcers was Carlos Graham, a writer and actor known as the "Mexican Errol Flynn."
(In 1944, Carlos Graham relocated to the United States, where he pioneered Spanish Language radio in the San Francisco Bay Area from the late 1940s - late 60s.)

TW: an article about a heinous femicide is below the cut.
A 25-year-old woman decapitated in in front of her home had a temporary restraining order against the man who police arrested under suspicion of being connected to the gruesome murder, ABC 7 reported.
Witnesses in the San Carlos neighbourhood, located about 24 miles south of San Francisco, who saw the bloody attack unfold described to the news outlet how the young mother of two was killed on Thursday morning, just a few steps away from the home where her 1 and 7-year-old children lay inside.
Law enforcement records of the incident note that the incident occurred just before noon, when police began receiving calls about “a 25-year-old female... head was cut off by a sword.”
The children did not witness the violent murder of their mother, San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office Lt Eamonn Allen said in a press conference after the crime scene had been cleared.
Child Protective Services swooped in shortly after to take the 7-year-old and 1-year-old girls, along with a dog and two cats who were found inside the home on a quiet residential street.
“Children are there, scared to come... want their mom,” a note from the police record read.
After arriving at the scene, officers began to work the area and were quickly able to make an arrest of the man they believed responsible for the murder.
“They began to work the scene and shortly then after, the male suspect arrived back at the scene and was quickly detained by sheriff’s deputies,” said Lt Allen.
Jose Solano Landaeta, a resident of Hayward, was arrested for homicide, the officer confirmed, adding that the weapon used in the attack was “still outstanding.”
ABC later identified the suspect as the former boyfriend of the victim, who had not been identified by authorities yet. The news outlet reported that the young mother of two had received a temporary restraining order against the man back in April but did not disclose if that order was still active at the time of her death.
Residents in the neighbourhood relayed with horror what they saw unfold on the street in front of their homes, some so shocked they found themselves stumped with the simple question of “why?”
One neighbour, Chapel Thorborne, told ABC 7 the distressing seen he walked into when he arrived home to the Bay Area neighbourhood shortly after the attack on Thursday.
“The head was underneath the car and she was laying in the back of the car- just severed,” he said. “And they covered her up.”
Mr Thorborne, who said he’d had brief encounters with the couple before the deadly attack unfolded, described how he saw the suspect with some friends shortly after the decapitation had occurred.
“After he cut her head off, he came walking up, him and his two friends,” Mr Thorborne said to ABC. “And they walked right by me and they arrested him.”
Officers who first responded to the scene were reportedly in distress at the devastation laid out before them, Lt Allen said. He noted that peer services would be made available to those impacted from the call.
“Anytime someone loses their life it’s certainly a tragedy. As far as the shocking nature of it, I do know that the deputies that first arrived on scene were a little beset by the scene,” he said, adding that those peer services that were being made available to the officers would also be offered to the witnesses, “because there were several civilian witnesses.”

"Eddie Redmayne relished shedding nice guy persona to play a serial killer in ‘The Good Nurse’
G. Allen Johnson October 19, 2022
Photo: Carlos Avila Gonzalez / The Chronicle
Tumblr media
"Eddie Redmayne has made some remarkable physical transformations to bring the stories of real-life people to the screen, from theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking to early 20th century transgender artist Lili Elbe. But in playing Charles Cullen, thought to be the most prolific serial killer in recorded history, he had to play himself.
Well, a version of himself, at least. Redmayne is widely regarded as one of the nicest stars in Hollywood, and a giving actor to his co-stars. As a nurse, Cullen often displayed a caring and charming demeanor toward his patients and co-workers.
But underneath that friendly exterior was a killer. In “The Good Nurse” — which opens in select theaters Wednesday, Oct. 19, and streams on Netflix beginning Oct. 26 — the star of the “Fantastic Beasts” franchise relished the challenge of exploring the dichotomy of a man who might have killed some 400 patients from 1988 to 2003, yet was a trusted friend to a fellow nurse, played by Jessica Chastain, who eventually helped bring him to justice.
“The thing I loved about the script was that it defied definition,” Redmayne told The Chronicle in an exclusive interview in San Francisco hours before “The Good Nurse” closed the Mill Valley Film Festival on Oct. 16. “I went into it thinking it was going to be a true-crime story, which on the one hand it is, but it focuses on the woman who was able to prevent this man from doing these things. The violence was ended through her compassion, ultimately.

“But also it felt like it was highlighting the cracks in the system. It was dumbfounding to me that this may well be the most prolific serial killer in American history and I’d never heard of him. And he had worked at nine hospitals, many of whom had a great sense of what he was doing.”
Chastain plays Amy Loughren, the real-life nurse who worked with detectives (played in the film by Nnamdi Asomugha and Noah Emmerich) to arrest him. Redmayne said he and Chastain, who are good friends, prepared for the role by spending time in nursing school, and both had conversations with Loughren.
Danish director Tobias Lindholm, known for his work with Mads Mikkelsen in “The Hunt” and “Another Round,” said the idea was not to make “The Good Nurse” a thriller but, as he put it, “a friendship story.”
“What Eddie and I were struggling with the most was to keep him friendly, never to invite us into his darkness,” said Lindholm, who accompanied Redmayne and Asomugha to Mill Valley. “I think that helped because you like him, even though you know he did it, there’s no signs of it. You are a little, ‘But he’s so nice. Could it really be him?’ I mean, he’s such a good friend to Amy.”

Redmayne said the fact that he and Chastain are friends — they met a decade ago at Giffoni, the noted children’s film festival in Italy, and have remained in touch since — created instant chemistry.
“We’d always dreamt of working together, and then this came along — it was a no-brainer,” said Redmayne, who laughed as he explained, “but my expectations were high. I’m a bit of a pessimist. I therefore think that if it’s fun to make, maybe the thing won’t be great. But Jessica is wonderfully galvanizing, so despite the subject matter, we had a really wonderful time making it.”
There was at least one day, though, that wasn’t much fun. It was during an intense interrogation scene between him, Asumogha and Emmerich when Redmayne displayed the type of transformation he achieved in his Oscar-winning performance as Hawking in “The Theory of Everything” and in his Oscar-nominated work as Elbe in “The Danish Girl.”
Lindholm said Redmayne requested that the set be chilly, so cold air was pumped in between takes. Then the director surprised his lead actor by handcuffing his wrist to the interrogation table. That was not in the script.
“We put on the handcuff, there’s this little click sound,” Lindholm recalled. “And he looks up and smiles. It’s like he found something there. I know that he’s the kind of actor who feeds from these real settings, real obstacles, and I realized ‘Oh my god’ when I saw what he’d found when we handcuffed him.”
Lindholm said the scene took 11 hours to shoot. Asomugha — known to Bay Area sports fans from his days playing football for Cal, the Oakland Raiders and the San Francisco 49ers — remembered it well.
“He’s pounding the table and he’s yelling and screaming. The camera was on him, and he did that nonstop for maybe 30 minutes,” said Asomugha of Redmayne. “Then the camera turned around and was on us. And he did the exact same thing, maybe with even more energy than he did when the camera is on him — just to aid us as actors.
“You don’t get that a lot. You hope to get that a lot from other actors, but the reality is you don’t. And for him to do that, I knew immediately, ‘Oh, this is a guy who not only cares about his work, but he cares about the people who are working opposite him.’ That’s exactly who he is as a person. He just genuinely cares about you and what you have to say and what’s going on in your life, and how your day was versus ever talking about himself, which I think is just remarkable.”

What’s going on in Redmayne’s life is that he is using his schedule promoting “The Good Nurse” and some treasured downtime with his family — he is raising two young children with wife Hannah Bagshawe, whom he first met in high school — to come down from the high of his first theater role in a decade.
He recently finished playing the Emcee opposite Jessie Buckley’s Sally Bowles in a production of “Cabaret” in London’s West End, and it was among the most rewarding professional experiences of his career. Both he and Buckley won the coveted Laurence Olivier Award for musical acting.
Redmayne said the experience took him back to his roots.
“When I was like 10 or 11, I was one of a hundred children in a production of ‘Oliver’ in the West End, at the London Palladium, a very beautiful old Victorian London theater,” Redmayne said. “I used to get to leave school, to go travel across London on the Tube to Oxford Circus, to go through the stage door of this stunning theater. I found it very seductive and and romantic. That’s where I got the bug for acting.
“I hadn’t done a musical onstage professionally since then, until ‘Cabaret.’ It was a wonderful thing. It was an immersive experience coming out of the pandemic, and there was an intimacy to it because everyone had not been to the theater for an age. It felt clandestine, and scintillating.”
