if i was grrm i would start confirming characters as gay to put off writing my book. heres my top list that would get people talking i think

stannis baratheon. theres evidence for this one so it would be believable. if anyone asks me about davos i just tell them to read the books and draw their own conclusions

samwell tarley. would also tell people that jon had a sexuality crisis in the same interview. would not say anything else

potpie. this would be good because people would start being like “oh so he’s just saying whoever now” and get mad and forget i didnt finish writing the books

theon. people would say “huh?” and “what?” and “wasn’t one of his most prominent traits that he loved having sex with women?” but i wouldnt explain it. i would say he was always intended to be gay also

aemon. i wouldnt specify which of the 17 aemons it was. and then i would say, “oh, and aegon too,” and that would probably distract people long enough that i wouldnt have to worry about people hassling me to write my book for at least a year

Do yourself a favor: do not waste your time with the Benioff/Weiss dog-turd that is 3 Body Problem, and watch the Chinese Three-Body instead.

Reasons? There are many.

The Netflix show is eight hours long. The Chinese Three-Body is a thirty hour series. Needless to say, the pacing is completely different.

Thirty years ago, people wouldn’t watch anything with subtitles… today, y’all watch shit in English with the captions running. So the language barrier is no impediment.

There are long stretches of dialog in T-B that are taken word-for-word from the book, while 3BP seems only tangentially aware that the book exists.

T-B takes only one significant departure from the structure of the book, but it’s a harmless one that just makes it a little more mysterious from the start. 3BP, meanwhile, splits the main character into five, and runs away in a panic every time the story asks the audience to care about science.

Seriously, Netflix, not everything has to be rewritten to be multicultural. The Three-Body Problem —the book— is a Chinese story about Chinese scientists and Chinese politics, and that’s the show I want to see.

What makes TT-BP so compelling is that it’s plausible. Scientists think like scientists, cops think like cops, and apocalyptic cultists think like apocalyptic cultists. And most of that makes it into T-B. As opposed to 3BP, where motivations aren’t so much opaque as non-existent, and the characters only do whatever will most efficiently get us to the next scene.

I’ll grant you, if T-B were an American production, it would feel like it was made in 2010… it’s all Dutch angles, rapid cuts, and skittering camera work. But it’s set in 2007, so who cares?

If you want to understand how differently these productions approach the source material, just look at the cosmic microwave background scene. Observe as Wang Miao in T-B frantically pores over dot-matrix print outs of satellite data with deepening horror, while the entire world of 3BP just walks outside, looks up, and goes “that’s peculiar”. You can practically feel Benioff and Weiss wanting to just write it all off to space dragons or something and move on to the next cool visual.

Speaking of dragons, T-B is 100% free of any remnants of the cast of Game of Thrones… I didn’t realize this before, but I never want to think about Samwell Tarley again.

Whitewashing of DT in Fanfiction

I don't read a lot of fanfiction, although there are a few I've enjoyed thanks to the references I've seen on this site. But I recently have looked at a couple of Jon/Dany fics which rewrite season 8. I was curious, so I took a look at them.

In these pieces, Dany has been totally transformed into a sympathetic character by making some changes from S8 such as:

Changing her motive for being in the North with Jon from what was presented in her ambiguous conversation with Sansa in the library at Winterfell. In fanfiction Dany's motives are being presented as "selfless." Her lines about her ambition for taking the iron throne are softened and deleted.

Sansa is presented as being grateful to Dany for coming North. Their relationship is friendly and cordial, with Sansa happy that Jon has "found someone."

Dany is apologetic to Samwell Tarley for executing his father and brother. She tries to gain Sam's sympathy, explaining that she was mistreated by her brother and sold to a warlord.

When the truth about Jon is revealed, Dany is grateful that she is "not alone anymore" as a Targaryen.

Sansa thinks Jon only needs time to "come to terms" with his sexual relationship with Dany. Then all will be well between the two of them.

I skipped around a lot, but DT usually survives King's Landing, and she and Jon end up ruling together. I don't think any of this is ever going to happen in the books. As much as I disliked some of the show's twists and turns, there's no way that D&D would have changed the ending from GRRM to this extent.

Something I find really interesting is that all of this acknowledges that the character of Sansa is very key to the Jon/Dany plot. It is necessary for Sansa to either be made into a ruthless, vindictive villain, or else for her to be totally sympathetic to Dany in order for these "fictions" to function. I think it likely from what was presented on the show that Sansa is going to reveal Jon's identity as a way of destabilizing Dany and of protecting Jon from himself. Jon will choose Sansa and the Starks. That "thread" from the show strikes me as being very authentic. The consequences for Jon and Sansa are something they will both have to grapple with.

Dickon Tarly beheld the disheveled young woman with the fussing baby in her arms. She had kind eyes, he thought quietly as she was caressing her pregnant belly.

This was the woman his brother loved.

The child he had taken in as his.

And the unborn babe that was his.

His brother, Samwell a deserter, an oath breaker, a stealer of maidens and father of bastards…

Granted Dickon hadn’t seen Sam in quiet some time, since he had been a little boy himself, but the existence of that woman contradicted everything he knew about his older brother, everything his father had preached about useless Sam, that Dickon couldn’t really do anything but stare really.

Gilly. Her name was Gilly like the flower. Gilly was pretty, not breathtakingly beautiful like a heroine of songs, but soft and sweet and gentle. Just like Dickon remembered Sam to be.

Sam who had stood before their gates this afternoon, still clad in the black of the Nights watch and had asked shelter for the pregnant girl while he went on to Old Town…

Dickon could just stare at his brother, the brother who would have been in his place if their father would have seen worth in him. Dickon himself had never really wasted a thought on Samwell since he believed to never see him again anyway. What was a Reach Lords business so far North anyway?

His silence was mistaken for disapproval he feared since his sweet mother bagged him to aid Sam. Even Talla suddenly remembered a love for Samwell she had not voiced when he had been disinherited.

Dickon would have liked to ask Randel what to do. Not because he couldn’t imagine the answer but hearing it from his father made it seem right to him.

But Lord Tarly was with the Tyrells, so it was Dickon’s call. And maybe he was still a little boy with fancy in his head, but this was still his Sam above all the other things. So, he let the woman and the babe stay.

Maybe he should have hugged Samwell?

Maybe he should have said more to him?

Maybe it was the last time he would see him?

Now, hours later he watched the woman with the small child, listen to the foreign melody she sung quietly to the boy and watched the moon light reflect in those soft brown eyes.

She reminded him of a doe, he realized.

“I am sorry, my Lord.”, the woman spoke to Dickon maybe the first time since she had arrived at his home.

“My father is the Lord.”, he answered promptly.

She gave him a sigh he could not place. “But right now, you act as Lord for him, right? You call me Lady too, even though I am far from one and honestly can’t stand it.”

“What is his name?”, Dickon asked after giving her an aloof shrug. She wasn’t entirely wrong. Maybe he was closer to being a Lord than she was a Lady.

“He doesn’t have one, not a real one at least not yet. It’s strange to me that you folk just give children their real names without knowing if they die or not… Feels like challenging the gods to me but we call him Monster for now…”

Dickon didn’t know what he should answer her. He did not completely get what she meant by you folk, but he knew that enough children died during infancy even up here were it was warm and lush…

“Do you call him Monster because he never sleeps?”

“Val called him Monster because of his father.”

But Dickon didn’t ask who the father was or were exactly her people where from or who this Val person was, she spoke of… It just cemented in his mind that Sam wasn’t the father, not in blood anyway, but he might be the only father this poor little worm ever knows… He could not imagine anyone calling his weak and soft brother a monster.

“What are you doing out here at this time anyway, my Lord?”

“I guess I am just restless too.”
