Behold, the girl I mentioned in the previous poll, she's been my OC since middle school, she's changed a lot. Did you know she was originally a creepypasta self insert?

I will be the first to admit that I am slightly lazy. If something is going to take too long, or requires too much effort, that's a nope from me. To somewhat get around safely deleting the bin Sims in Aramore, I've decided to randomize classes for them and have them exist as playable NPC's. They will run duplicate shops, live in the background, be customers and friends of my played Sims, and I will also play them and progress their families so they're actually living and dying alongside everyone else, but I won't do any sort of updating about what's going on with them (unless, of course, they get involved with one of my families).
So far, I have combined the Crittur and Roseland households and given Cyd a makeover, as well as making over the Ottomas family. If anyone is interested, I have included their stats below.

Note
What's your favorite color?
Do you have a favorite book?
If you had a bunch of Legos, what would you make with them?
I missed having anons.
Okay. My favorite color is green.
I feel like.... My favorite books change all the time. Right now I'm really digging Emily Duncan's Wicked Saints. I love anything Tolkien and C S Lewis.
Between the Lines by Jodi Picoult and Samantha Van Leer has a special place in my heart.
Ooo I'm really bad at building with Legos but I'd probably build my dream home or the whole Shire.

Charlie. A lesbian. Talking to her bff about the guy he apparently always talks about. Saying he sounds dreamy.
Her bff who on the first occasion they met helped her flirt with a man.
Her bff whose other bff she was so excited to finally meet after hearing so much about him.
Her new bff who she thought would have been shorter because her other bff talks about him being this "weird dorky little guy and is so cool and powerful and shit!"
Her bff whose friend (to an extent) group are half a dozen mostly queer (coded) women, a couple queer (coded) men, his angel boy best friend, and herself. A lesbian.

I saw your comments about country music on the Chicks thread and I’m curious about your opinion. I grew up on country music and feel like “9/11 killed country” is pretty valid. But I’d love to hear your take because I miss it [country music].
Hi! So, my major issue with the “9/11 killed country music” post, as someone who listens to a ton of musical genres but has both a history of and soft spot for country, is that it’s a reductive, cherrypicking way to define an entire massive genre based on a handful of individual songs and high-profile artists that had their heyday at this point nearly two decades ago (Toby Keith, Big & Rich, etc.). It’s a very slanted read on pop radio country, and it’s not even remotely accurate to quantifying the broader genre.
It’s just bizarre that people allow their idea of the whole genre to be molded by a spate of reactionary right-wing songs that found traction immediately after 9/11 and then largely lost dominance in the genre. Most country songs on the radio are not about jingoism - they’re still about a lover done you wrong, or drinking after a hard day’s work, or finding happiness without much money, or teenagers in love, or about the tragedies of alcoholism and domestic abuse, or appreciating your small town, as so much of this genre has always been. If you look at the top 10 right now, there isn’t a patriot song in the whole thing (although two of the songs have overtly Christian references, but that’s always been part of country music too). The militaristic patriotism songs tend to just be one or two songs a year that end up in heavy rotation around the fourth of July and in September, but they get outsized attention comparatively because they’re so offensively grating.
And even after 9/11, for the last two decades most country songs on the radio still haven’t been “nationalist pop with twang”. Yes, in the 2000’s we had “Courtesy of the Red White and Blue” and “Where Were You When the World Stopped Turning” and “American Soldier”, but this was also LGBT+ supporter Shania Twain’s* and avowed Democrat Tim McGraw’s imperial phases, the era of “Before He Cheats” and “Concrete Angel” and “Red Ragtop”, the years that made a Blake Shelton song about breaking out of prison his calling card and gave Miranda Lambert a massive hit with a song about burning her abuser’s house down.
This isn’t to say that country is progressive. Country music has a major problem with being dominated by straight white men, and even straight white women spent several of the last years underrepresented** (to say nothing of LGBT+ artists and artists of color). But that issue predates 9/11, as does the whitewashing of country’s history; the aforementioned Ken Burns documentary does go into how white country musicians forced black musicians out of the scene and erased their accomplishments going back decades before 2001. “Proud to Be an American” and “God Bless the USA”, for the record, were recorded in 1980’s.
Country, as a genre, does lean more conservative than many other genres, but it still holds a wide array of political viewpoints, even on the pop charts. I’m not just talking about indie alt-country darlings, although I’ll get to those in a minute - even pop country megastars are a varied bunch. Eric Church, who currently has a hit on the top 10, just dropped a scathing track called “Stick That in Your Country Song” that cusses out underfunding schools and mass incarceration; Luke Bryan got a #1 hit in 2017 with a chorus that included “I believe you love who you love and ain’t nothing you should ever be ashamed of”; Carrie Underwood pinned an entire album and tour cycle around a single about escaping domestic abuse and recently released a song criticizing gun proliferation; Kacey Musgraves won a CMA for her hit single where she criticizes slut-shaming and encourages women to “kiss lots of boys or kiss lots of girls if that’s something you’re into”, then she won a Grammy for an album where she sings about smoking weed and dedicates an empowerment anthem to the LGBT+ community; Miley Cyrus had an explicitly bisexual song on her most recent “back to her roots” country album; Tim McGraw discussed running for governor of Tennessee as a Democrat and threw his support behind Obama way back during Obama’s 2008 campaign. I’ve been relatively unplugged from country radio for the last few years, but this is all stuff relatively off the top of my head.
And that moves us to alt-country. I die a little inside whenever someone says that they “just mean radio country” when they say they “hate country music”, because alt-country is just the tits. It just is. It’s the best. If someone says they listen to rock music, we don’t assume they only mean Nickelback and Shinedown - and yet somehow we’ve shut country out so much that we don’t even consider that there’s an entire world of the genre beyond what charts - and that world is rich and powerful and thoughtful and as valid a form of music as any other genre. Some favorites contemporary alt-country artists of mine (including some songs about immigration, opiate addiction, protesting war, sexism, agricultural exploitation, homophobia, one bashing Trump directly and even one about female cunnilingus): Courtney Marie Andrews, Ruston Kelly, Tyler Childers, Margo Price, Jason Isbell, Colter Wall, Ian Noe, Kathleen Edwards, Lydia Loveless, Lori McKenna, Amanda Shires, Ashley Monroe, Lucinda Williams, Over the Rhine, Samantha Crain, Shooter Jennings, Cam, John Moreland, Chris Stapleton, Lindi Ortega, Lavender Country, Cody Belew, Honey Harper, Lera Lynn, Nina Nastasia, Patty Griffin, Holly Williams.
The problem with the “9/11 killed country” attitude, to me, is that it’s a stance that requires limited knowledge of country that happened after 9/11 and a selective memory for the country that existed before 9/11. Jingoist country songs existed and found massive success before 9/11; more progressive country songs existed and found success after 9/11. Contrary to what people on tumblr seem to believe, the genre of country music was not just outlaw country, “Jolene” and Woodie Guthrie folk songs until Toby Keith came along; it was already highly Christian/gospel-influenced and highly patriarchal. And it was already full of goofy songs about getting drunk and partying and driving tractors, the predecessors to “bro country”.
I think, personally, we lose so much by centering “Courtesy of the Red White and Blue” and Florida Georgia Line as the first things we think of when we think about country music, because those songs and acts aren’t representative of the genre, or even of the pop country charts. We lose a lot because we lose sight of all the fantastic progressive or apolitical music in the genre, and we lose a lot because we ignore the sins of pre-9/11 country and the opportunity to critique its history of whitewashing, heteronormativity and cultural Christianity by likening it to some sort of good ol’ days.
Thank you for letting me ramble!
*I’m aware of Shania’s ignorant-ass Trump comments, but those reflect more recent political developments for her and came with a hasty retraction.
**Although lol the pop, rock and rap charts have all been brutal to women for the last several years.

do u have any actually good poetry or essay collections? i have read such terrible ones and am losing hope ;(
honestly i haven’t read a lot of good ones and even the good ones are, i think, just really good in comparison with the bad ones i’ve read.
one poetry collection that is objectively good imo is teaching my mother how to give birth by warsan shire but i think everybody and their mother has read it
i liked trick mirror by jia tolentino as i was reading it but i learned in the meantime that her parents may be human traffickers so yikes. obviously how much can you blame a kid for her parents’ crimes? but i do wonder if her wikipedia page is frequently scrubbed clean of any mention of it. if you want to read some time-appropriate cultural critic of the monetization of the self you’d like this book (even though the last chapters were weak af)
“we are never meeting in real life” by samantha irby is a comedic collection of essays but it does talk about childhood trauma and dysfunctional family dynamics. it’s the sense of humor that i find hilarious but u may not vibe with it!
anyways what are you reading and what are you looking for?? it’ll be easier for me to understand what you like and don’t like

creating my own post bc that other one was getting very long haha.
thank you for tagging me @be-gay-do-plays!
rules: answer 10 questions, come up with 10 more, and tag 10 people.
1. What’s something you’d want to be famous for?
idk if I'd want to be famous, but if I was to become famous I'd want it to be bc I created something that made someone happy. Maybe a writer or a musician? I'm not great at visual art haha
2. What’s a cool fact that you know?
molasses is just sugar but less refined. cook molasses a little longer and it'll become sugar (this may be common knowledge but I thought it was cool when I found out lol)
3. What’s an aesthetic that you like?
idk if this is a real thing but like...gay forest witch. lmk if you know what I mean lmao
4. What’s your favorite song at the moment?
either fast car by tracy chapman or independence day by elliot smith
5. Which fictional world/setting would you most like to live in?
one of the places in lotr, probably rivendell or the shire. ooh or maybe red london from adsom.
6. Which fictional world/setting would you least like to live in?
probably panem (the hunger games).
7. What’s the weirdest thing you’ve done so far to cope with quarantine/isolation?
I guess folding my laundry at 2am after wasting the entire rest of the day watching netflix
8. What’s the best show you’ve watched or book you’ve read recently ?
I just read the priory of the orange tree by samantha shannon and it was really good!
9. What’s the worst show you’ve watched or book you’ve read recently?
lol this is an amazing question. I watched too hot to handle on Netflix (it's basically a dating show where they invite a bunch of horny ppl to an island and tell them they can't have sex. they lose money every time they kiss/have sex/etc). it's the funniest thing I've ever seen lmao.
10. What’s a show/book/movie that you think more people should watch/listen to?
ooooh. I would say the night circus. I know ppl are VERY divided on this book for a lot of reasons, but I'd say if you're willing to look past instalove for the sake of beautiful writing and a very very rich setting, you should give it a go! personally it's one of my favs so yeah.
my questions:
1. what is a book/movie/show that everyone hates but you like?
2. what is a book/movie/show that everyone loves but you hate?
3. do you like camping?
4. math/science or english/history?
5. what's your favorite activity you've done so far in quarantine?
6. who's your celebrity crush?
7. gifs, edits, or fanfic?
8. do you play any sports? if so, which ones?
9. canoeing, kayaking, or hiking? (or none)

7. If you could be a mythical creature, which would you choose?
Gosh this is a tough one, not just because there are so many choices but I also feel like most mythical creatures have their drawbacks. This is such a nerdy answer but can I say Hobbit? Hobbits have the best life, man. 6 meals a day, beautiful scenery, not a care in the world. If I had the chance to be a Hobbit in the Shire you would never see me again.
10. Do you like your name? Would you ever change it?
For those of you who don’t know, my name is Samantha (but almost everyone calls me Sam). Yes, I do like my name actually. I haven’t met that many Samantha’s in my life so it’s a pretty unique name, at least where I live. I like that It’s a slightly older name, but not so old that it sounds historic or anything. And no, I don’t think I’d ever change it.
48. Describe yourself using one word.
I know this word gets thrown around a lot on Tumblr but I’m honestly gonna use it for this question. If I could describe myself using one word it would be: Soft.
Great questions! Thanks for asking :)

I recently commissioned the amazing @fishfingersandscarves to draw Sam, Frodo, Merry and Pippin as they appear in the Heistverse, and it was honestly everything I’ve ever asked for. Fishy is incredible, and their art is so good!
Left to right: Samantha “Sam” Gamgee, Frodo Baggins, Miranda “Merry” Brandybuck, and Pedro “Pippin” Took.
More info on these four under the cut.
Frodo Baggins: Their uncle Bilbo moved to Hobbiton, a small village outside London, but they frequently commute to attend university part-time. They’re bookish and quiet, and enjoy spending time by themselves. They’re a very humble person and are pursuing a Master’s degree in linguistics at University College London.
Samantha “Sam” Gamgee: Her father works as the head municipal gardener for the town of Hobbiton and she sometimes helps around, especially on weekends when she’s in town visiting her parents. She studies environmental science at UCL and has a pretty big crush on Rosie, a bartender at the campus pub, the Green Dragon. She tends to see the best in everyone, and often finds herself in mediating positions. She’s rarely seen without her messenger bag which contains, amongst other things, a travel cooking set and a travel first-aid kit.
Miranda “Merry” Brandybuck: Merry is Samantha’s roommate in London, and studies international relations and environmental science. She’s a budding cartographer and loves hiking, often dragging her friends on nature trips. Most of her family lives in Bucklebury, the village neighbouring Hobbiton, and her father serves as mayor of the town.
Pascal “Pippin” Took: Pippin is the son of Shire District Councillor Paladin Took, and currently works as a librarian. He tried going to university but didn’t like it much, and instead loves collecting knowledge on his own time and in his own way: as a result, he’s always certain to have something interesting in his pockets, like a rock or a funny-shaped stick. He also has a passion for coding, and loves writing his own programming codes.

Examining Thornfield Hall
Thornfield, near Millcote, ---shire.
I was thinking the other day about the numerous manors that have portrayed Thornfield Hall in the film and TV adaptations, and which one seems to be the closest to the Hall as described in the book.  I’m thinking more of the exterior of the building and not the interior or the grounds.  There seems to be a preference for which hall fits the conception of Thornfield - and that is Haddon Hall, which has been featured in three adaptions of Jane Eyre.  But in this post, I want to compare the description of the house to the visual from the different adaptations.
Descriptions of Thornfield Hall from the book:
“A fine old hall, rather neglected of late years”
“It was three storeys high, of proportions not vast, though considerable: a gentleman’s manor-house, not a nobleman’s seat: battlements round the top gave it a picturesque look.”
"Grey front stood out well from the background of a rookery”
“ I like Thornfield, its antiquity, its retirement, its old crow-trees and thorn-trees, its grey façade, and lines of dark windows reflecting that metal welkin”
House front with an upper and lower row of windows
(And to clear up some descriptions:
Battlements: a parapet at the top of a wall, usually of a fort or castle, that has regularly spaced, squared openings for shooting through
Welkin: the sky or heaven)
And now for a look at the prominent locations to have portrayed Thornfield Hall:
Jane Eyre 1970 (starring Susannah York)
Tumblr media
Ripley Castle is in Harrogate in North Yorkshire, and I think it fits the bill for Thornfield very well.  There are the battlements, the row of upper and lower windows, and it looks to be three stories high.  The grey front is lacking (although all the homes featured here seem to be of a warmer color stone.)
Jane Eyre 1973 (starring Sorcha Cusack)
Tumblr media
Renishaw Hall is in Sheffield and also generally fits the bill for the description of Thornfield.  This photo is actually from the back of the house though, with the front having a less impressive view.  The back of the house featured more in the miniseries as well.  I am very partial to Renishaw Hall because it is from my favorite adaptation, but it doesn’t have that dark antiquity that I feel like Thornfield should have.  Renishaw looks too nice and well kept.  Although perhaps it fits more with a “gentleman”s manor-house” and not a “nobleman’s seat.”
Jane Eyre 1983 (starring Zelah Clarke)
Tumblr media
Deene Park is located in Corby and is perhaps fitting in general but feels unremarkable.  If I saw this place while scouting for a location for Thornfield, I wouldn’t have remembered much about this.  It is not as imposing though so maybe that is correct.  And it has an antiquity and neglectful aspect to it.
Jane Eyre 1996 (starring Charlotte Gainsbourg), Jane Eyre 2006 (starring Ruth Wilson), Jane Eyre 2011 (starring Mia Wasikowska)
Tumblr media
Haddon Hall is located in Bakewell and the wonderful courtyard is often featured in the adaptations even though it is not described in the book.  It appears to be the most popular choice, but perhaps is the one least like the Thornfield description.  It is rather vast, and doesn’t have that three story look, with a row of upper and lower windows.  There is a sense of decay though, and having visited Haddon Hall a couple of times, I absolutely love the place.  The interiors probably also helped make it a popular choice for adaptations.
Jane Eyre 1997 (starring Samantha Morton)
Tumblr media
Naworth Castle is in Cumbria, and might be the least enticing version of Thornfield yet.  The battlements and the antiquity are there, but the height and the row of windows are lacking.  It’s too much of a fortress to be a manor home I think, and the size and shape are all wrong.
Conclusion
For the location least like Thornfield, I think I will give that honor to Naworth Castle.  Although Haddon Hall is also a little too grand and inaccurate for Thornfield, the parts of the Hall they show do seem to fit well.  And it has more of the picturesque to it than Naworth.
For the best Thornfield Hall location, I’m surprising myself and going with Ripley Castle.  It doesn’t look as large as some of the other locations, it has a great antiquity and heaviness to it that could add to Rochester’s reluctance to stay at the Hall, and the row of windows makes me wonder what could be in the upper story.  The look feels closest to what I had envisioned of Thornfield from reading the book.
Please let me know in the comments which is your favorite Thornfield location!

The War Master: Master of Callous (Big Finish)
Latest Review: Written By: James Goss, Guy Adams Directed By: Scott Handcock Cast Derek Jacobi (The Master), Silas Carson (The Ood), Maeve Bluebell Wells (Cassandra King), Samantha Béart (Martine King), Simon Ludders (Elliot King), Pippa Haywood (Teremon), David Menkin (Herschel), Barnaby Edwards (Jaques), Richard Earl (Sassanby), Kai Owen (Porrit), Joe Shire (Calia), Angela Bruce (Mother), Wilf Scolding (First Soldier) and Tom Forrister (Second Soldier). Other parts played by members of the cast. Producer Scott Handcock Script Editor Nicholas Briggs Executive Producers Jason Haigh-Ellery and Nicholas Briggs Derek Jacobi returns to the role of the Master for the second set of stories, this time it is four episodes that follow a single storyline, as opposed to the slightly more episodic nature of the first box set.  The story takes place on a colony planet called Callous, in which a small group of artists attempted and sort of failed to make a home. Their livelihood depends upon a mine, and the story revolves around this mine, its contents, the people who give everything to make the mine viable, the planetary governor who wants to take everything she can from the inhabitants, and the Master who has his own secret plans and machinations.  In short...it is an excellent story. I recommend this box set, there will likely be SPOILERS ahead, so reader beware. The opening episode, Call for the Dead follows Elliot King, the frustrated would-be leader of Callous, whose long attempts to make the mine worthwhile have yielded very few positive results, and the Governor bleeds him dry whenever she gets the chance.  He has spent so much time trying to make the mine earn just enough money to keep up with his payments that he has basically lost his family...his wife and daughter moved off-world, and while his wife is very ill, his daughter misses him daily. Meanwhile, he is being stalked by an odd with a ringing telephone, and when he finally answers the call, the Master is on the line.  Without getting too deep into it, Elliot decides to take his own life not long after his chat with the Master, and whatever plans the Master has are clearly set into motion.  Elliot's daughter Cassie and her wife Martine come to Callous to take over where her father left off.  Only Cassie is more adept with the mine than her father ever was.  He was an artist trying to make a living digging in a mine, as she went to school specifically to learn how to mine properly.  But when she too runs into trouble...another Ood phone call comes her way, only this time the Master offers his help. The set continues with The Glittering Prize, and this time the Master is posing as Mr. Orman, a kindly gentleman helping Cassie to get the mine working.  They strike a substance that could make them all rich...but if the Governor finds out they have it, she is sure to come and attempt to skim even more profits off their hard work.  The Master offers his help yet again, helping them plot to sneak the substance off the planet and hide it from the governor until they can safely make their money off of it.  But the substance has a psychic side effect, as it slowly can drive people mad or hallucinate, and it seems to drive the Ood workers completely out of sorts. The Persistence of Dreams focuses solely on Martine as she tries to keep her sanity guarding the substance.  She is accompanied only by an Ood bt finds herself hallucinating about her late mother, Cassie, Mr Orman and more...never knowing what is real and being driven to the brink of sanity by the awful substance. When the Ood seems to go mad as well and attempt to kill her, she launches herself into space, and hopes that hope can reach her in time...but of course, the Master has other plans. The set is closed out by Sins of the Father which sees the Governor arrive on Callous and demand the substance because someone tipped her off that they had found it.  She has captured and is torturing the Master daily for answers, but no mere Governor can really get anything out of the Master! Cassie has been cast out by most of the inhabitants of Callous, who blame her of much of their current woes, particularly the homicidal Governor who intends to kill them all for answers.  But the Governor didn't count on her prisoner actually being someone of influence.  She didn't count on his control of the Ood, or his ability to escape his chains...and the Master's plan finally comes into focus. He just needed the substance. Callous just happened to be his best route of getting the rare stuff, and he has beaten everyone before they even knew he was a threat. The story concludes with the Master meeting a Time Lord to sell off the substance so the Time Lords can build a new weapon against the Daleks.  It seemed almost odd to me that the Master would do all this for such a petty thing as money and helping the Time Lord cause. Just seemed off...but then a smaller item was thrown in for his payment. The Chameleon Arch.  It nicely tied in with the very item he was using when we first met this Doctor on TV (and actually used at the end of the previous box set, putting this one ahead of that timeline wise), and makes all his efforts in this story seem perfectly worth it for his character.  It may have been a mild hassle putting all those pieces into place, but he got what he truly wanted out of it. An eventual escape from the Time War. This is an excellent set, that somehow managed to top the first War Master set. And that was a tall order, as that first set was wonderful. I am already excited for more, as Big Finish have clearly been chomping at the bit for years to tell Time War tales, and they are reveling in it with every chance they get. Whether they focus on the War Doctor, the War Master, or just seeing the seeds of the war in the Eighth Doctor or Gallifrey sets. In all attempts, they have made some exciting stuff. http://reviews.doctorwhonews.net/2019/01/the_war_master_master_of_callous_big_finish.html?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=tumblr
