not to undermine the emotional significance of the title on probably dozens of blackhands spotify playlists but tbh. imo. if i may.
to me, izzy’s “you told me that above all else is loyalty to my captain” reads exactly like how fang saying “you told me that the love of a pet makes a man weak” in e6 reads. which is that Blackbeard is ed’s worksona, a front he puts on to portray himself as a badass legendary masculine caricature, so sometimes ed says some random shit that sounds kinda ominous and edgy just to keep up appearances.
like in e6, ed barely even remembers saying that shit about loving a pet. the reason he gives for not letting fang keep the dog is that pets make the ship dirty. but disliking mess is not cool/badass/manly enough for The Legendary Blackbeard, so what he said to fang at the time was some bullshit about how having pets is for pussies or whatever. and you know that what he said is bullshit bc he barely remembers saying it. the dialogue and the acting in that scene all imply that the whole “the love of a pet makes a man weak” thing was literally just ed talking out of his ass.
so like. to ME it seems really likely that ed telling izzy “above all else is loyalty to your captain” was ed finding a way to say “a big part of your job is not betraying me” but in a way that sounded cool. and he wasn’t invested in it sounding cool bc izzy’s promotion was a particularly important moment to ed, he wanted it to sound cool for the same reason he needed his “no pets allowed” policy to sound cool. the facade of The Legendary Blackbeard wasn’t just for ed’s enemies, ed needed his crew to believe in it, too.
in the very first episode, buttons tells us that traditionally, pirate captains maintain the respect and obedience of their crew by successfully portraying themselves as tough, badass, manly. ed’s done this by building his reputation as a genius sailor and bloodthirsty killer, and for years he’s most likely had to interact with his crew in a way that supports that reputation.
tl;dr “above all else is loyalty to your captain” was most likely ed making up some manly-sounding bullshit to keep up appearances in the same way that “the love of a pet makes a man weak” was clearly just him talking out of his ass

"Lizzie and I had never met before we showed up to work, so we were both relieved there was a natural chemistry, which hopefully comes across on the screen. We are both kind of connected to those sides of ourselves in our own lives. I love doing romantic things. I am a very romantic person in my own life, so it is one of the easier things to tap into."

My antenna perked up watching The Newsreader, when Anna Torv's character mentioned her cousin Astrid Männik. It was more than just an Easter egg about the actress' Estonian heritage - Helen talks to her cousin during the Chornobyl disaster on the phone and mentions Astrid's brother in Estonia, which all likely makes Helen's character the child of a WWII refugee to Australia.

Oscar: One day it dawns on you that you’re starting to get old. Then it dawns on you that you are old. Then it dawns on you that every seconds that ticks by is just another inch that you’re dragged your tired carcass towards your own cold grave. And then one day, stuff stops dawning on you. Cause you died.

thinking about how ed says he doesn’t have any friends and what he means by that and what it shows us about what he values in a relationship
because ed has had relationships that many people would consider friendship. calico jack is our primary example of that. they go way back, they’re excited to see each other, they quickly fall into old habits of destructive unhinged partying. ed even loudly and fondly tells a group of people about how jack saved his life
and then with izzy. i personally read their relationship as being, at best, a “casual work friend who you don’t know very well outside of your job” situation. but a first mate is someone who the captain is vulnerable to, more so than any other crew member. a pirate captain has to trust his first mate to not betray him and to have his back during raids. to a certain degree, ed has had to trust izzy with his life. and he probably did up until the last few episodes of the show.
and yet, from the beginning of the show, ed is lonely. he feels bored. he feels like he’s treading water, waiting to drown. he’s craving a connection he’s never had before, a true friendship where he can be fully himself and be emotionally vulnerable and not have people take advantage of that vulnerability. and by not showing us otherwise, the story tell us that this is something that he (and stede) has never had before the start of the show.
ed values being able to trust people emotionally more than he values being able to trust them, like, physically. which is so interesting to me, because in soooo many stories it’s the “i would fight for you” and “i would lay down my life for you” and “i would do anything to save your life” stuff that’s portrayed as being the deepest form of intimacy and most impactful display of love. and i’d probably expect to see that be the case for a story like this one, where violence and death is a constant risk.
but the writing in ofmd suggests that the deepest form of intimacy doesn’t come from violence and sacrifice. in ofmd, the deepest form of intimacy is emotional vulnerability and open communication. the most impactful display of love is acceptance and respect. and letting important things go unsaid is not romantic or aspirational, it’s a tragedy that leads to miscommunication and heartbreak.
