And before Reed knew it, the first term of classes was over. And he was halfway done with uni (using Peri’s Shorter University mod to make it only 8 credits).
His first term ended in straight A+’s, Reed was quite the studious student. He was still on the soccer team and the debate club, but he rarely had any time in between.
Saturday morning was the great debate showdown, and Reed dominated both of his oppenents, but yet he still never was given the overall winner of the showdown. Also during this showdown, he managed to reach Senior level of the debate club, so that was great. There was now a 15k research machine for emergencies.
Later that evening Reed has his soccer game. Which went well for the overall team, but Reed managed to injury his wrist yet while trying to keep the ball from going out of bounds. Something tells me that he’s just not cut out for the sports life.
His lady friend, Jazmin moved out of the dorms, so she wasn’t around much anymore. Instead Reed started getting friendly with classmate Kelly Osburn (no relation?). He couldn’t help but admire her confidence. She had no shame wearing bikini tops to class. She then became his 3rd and final strong romantic interest. And while he admired Kelly, it was purely a physical attraction as there wasn’t much chemistry outside the classroom.

A Dormant Fuse | Peter Parker and
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For the last couple of weeks, Peter had been off, there was something soon to erupt from his mind. (Y/N) was worried about her boyfriend, he was never this distant, or secretive. Whatever was going on in the boy’s mind, he wasn’t overly keen on sharing it.
She respected his privacy, however she wished to spend some time with him, they had known each for so long, it was strange and discomforting for her to see him in such a solitary way. As she stood by her locker, her (Y/E/C) eyes watched as he kept his head down, as he walked out of his science class.
Ned was next to her, a frown also covering his face. He too knew that there was a shadow hanging over his best friend’s head, but alike to (Y/N), he couldn’t make out its shape. There was the structure of a web present, Peter appeared trapped in its coils, like a fly that was entangled by a spider’s convincing trap.
“Are you aware what is going through his mind, he’s different since our trip to Oscorp?” The words fell from (Y/N)’s mouth, she had already timed his untimely change in presence. He was never fully conscious of his surrounding, or he was too so. He’d pick up on the tiniest sounds, see smallest scriptures, and that was all since their field trip to the large and uprising company.
Oscorp was famous for its wrangling of power and experiments. There were so many secrets within its walls, however there was one specific piece of information that Ned tried to refrain from sharing with (Y/N). But it was difficult, she deserved to have as much truth on the matter, and Peter as a whole, as possible.
He released a sigh, knowing that later that he could possibly regret his process of involvement, but he too was also friends with (Y/N), since she moved to Queens those years ago, a touchy subject that was always evaded was Peter’s parents. They weren’t here, and they were not alive in conversation either. “He’s probably a little emotional about going there.” (Y/N) frowned lightly,
misunderstanding how that could be so, mulling her mind for the reason. “His dad used to work there, he was partners with Norman Osburne. And then one day he up and left his job, and his son, and that’s why he lives with May, his parents were assumed dead since their sideways business trip.”
It was a large toll to carry, (Y/N) couldn’t imagine how her boyfriend felt day after day. It must have been hard, and probably the most difficult thing that the boy had ever done. Dealing with Flash was one thing, but entering a building of a past, a building that his father had authority and council in, was much more complex.
“Shit.” She breathed, unsure of how to respond to Ned. There wasn’t really much that she could say, nothing would resurrect Peter’s parents, and to cut the conversation short, Peter was walking towards them, his unruly haired bowed towards the floor, as though he was doing his best impression of the invisible man.
The only thing was though, Ned and (Y/N) could see him clearly, even through the flocks of students. To them, he was the only prominence that they could see, making his silent way through the groups and towards them. His expression was readable, he didn’t want to talk, or be seen, or pretty much anything.
Life was a mystery, and so was the clamped mouths of (Y/N) and Ned. He had heard them, discussing his family’s history, but that was not all that was bothering. Whilst he looked at them, he had his face dressed in a soft frown, they were clueless, but in all respect, so was he. Things were different, as suspicious as the hushed terms written all over his friends’ faces.
He didn’t have the heart, or gut, or spleen, to tell them the truth. He was bitten, and although that sounded like the start of some teenage, supernatural show, it wasn’t something with fangs or glowing eyes that had dug its teeth in. Instead it was a spider, a simple insect, it happened on the field trip, and the after affects proceeded to continue.
A part of him thought that his body was filling with adrenaline, spiralling his senses until he would die. His hearing was now spectacular, his sight amazing, everything had increased in strength. Before he was weak, puny even, and now he was substantially different.
He felt so, as though this entire ordeal was to change who he was and what he chose to do with his life. But he was still young, there was plenty for the boy to figure out.
“Hey.” His voice rolled into their ears as a mumble, and his lips pressed lightly upon (Y/N)’s cheek. The worst part of all of this was that she was worrying about him, concerned and uncertain of how to help. He, though, wasn’t sure that he could be helped, it felt like a lifetime curse that he’d never shake.
“We still on for tonight?” May was out, and Peter had invited (Y/N) over for dinner, a bit of one on one time. Sometimes it was nice to share a moment of privacy, and this was the perfect opportunity.
“Yeah.” A tight lipped, yet honest, smile stretched across his mouth, although it came across to his mind as more of a grimace. (Y/N) grasped Peter’s hand, saluting Ned and the pair bidding goodbye, before fleeing the scene of the high school.
When they got to his apartment, the pair was fast to put their belongings on the ground, and trudge towards the kitchen out of hunger. Peter opened the fridge, pulling out a tub of leftovers that he and May had endured the night before, walking towards the fridge.
The couple stood in silence, until the microwave pinged, alerting them that their food was ready and hot. In solace, (Y/N) walked towards the cupboard that housed the plates, and grabbed a couple.
However her hand slipped from the plates, landing on the floor with a scarring crash. They were in pieces, and so was (Y/N) as she shook and fearfully looked towards Peter’s whose eyes were wide from the alerting noise.
He was most probably angry, furious maybe, (Y/N) thought. Peter was going through enough right now, more than she knew, and to top it all off, she had added to his pain and frustrations.
“Sorry.” She breathed, almost not believing in what she had done. It was a grave mistake, something that she’d have to somehow make up for. “I’m so sorry Pete, I didn’t mean to, I was just thinking, and now I can see I was doing that too much. I shouldn’t have been distracted, it’s my fault, all my fault!”
“Calm down baby.” He instantly walked over to his girlfriend, grabbing her hands in attempts to stop her from trying to collect up the porcelain pieces from the ground. “It’s okay, are you okay? You’re not hurt are you?”
His brown eyes examined her arms and hands for any signs of a breakage in the skin, to his relief he found none. He led her a little ways away from the mess, ignoring the fact that their meal was ready to be dishes up.
At his words and concerns, (Y/N) frowned, she had expected a very different reaction from the boy. However a part of her was relieved that he cared more for her than house ware.
“I’m good.” But there there was one thing on her mind. “Are you though, you’ve been acting different recently, like really so?”
Peter bit his lip, he should have expected this. It was waiting to spill from her mouth before him, he had heard her worry earlier. And that was one thing that he didn’t want her to do, worry for him in such a way.
“If you wanna know, I’ll tell you, but it’s strange...” He smiled, they were okay, and it was the truth that would set him free, and refrain his girlfriend from being so concerned for his well-being.
She deserved to know, and wanted to. If they were supposed to be, she wouldn’t freak over the affects of the small bite, she’d rub his shoulders and allow him to break upon her, in his lost and confused state.

Major-General Phillips’ letters to La Fayette
My original intention was to write about the letter La Fayette wrote to Major-General William Phillips as a reply to Phillips privious three letters … but I realised that La Fayettes letters is a lot less interesting without Phillips letters as context.
Petersburg April 26th 1781
Sir,
My Aid de Camps Servant, John Porteus, was taken yesterday. I request you will have the goodness to send him back as soon as possible. I conceive nothing but the little hurry of yesterday could have prevented this being done without application, as I imagine you are a Gentleman who perfectly understand these civilities, which have been practiced by the Kings Officers on all occasions, particularly in the instances of General Stubens Servant and others taken by Lieutenant Colonel Simcoe in the last expedition, who were sent back immediately.
I am Sir your humble servant.
W. PHILLIPS
British Camp, at Osborn, April 28, 1781
[Sir,
It is a principle of the British army engaged in the present war, which they esteem as an unfortunate one, to conduct it with every attention to humanity and the laws of war; and in the necessary destruction of public stores of every kind, to prevent, as far as possible, that of private property. I call upon the inhabitants of Yorktown, Williamsburg, Petersburg, and Chesterfield, for a proof of the mild treatment they have received from the king's troops; in particular at Petersburg, when the town was saved by the labour of the soldiers, which otherwise must have perished by the wilful inactivity of its inhabitants. I have now a charge of the deepest nature to make against the American arms: that of having fired upon the king's troops by a flag of truce vessel; and, to render the conduct as discordant to the laws] of Arms, the Flag was left flying the whole time at the Mast-head seeming to sport with the most sacred kind of War. You are sensible, Sir, that I am authorized to inflict the severest punishments in return for this bad Conduct, and that the Town & Villages lay at the mercy of the King's troops, and it is to that mercy alone that you can appeal for their not being reduced to Ashes. The Compassion & Benevolence which has mark'd the British Character in the present Contest, still govern the Conduct of the King's Officers, & I shall willingly remit the Infliction of any redress We have a right to claim, provided the Persons who fired from the Flag of Truce Vessell are delivered into my possession and a public disavowal made by you Sir, of the Villainy of their Conduct. Shou'd you, Sir, refuse this I hereby make you answerable for any desolation which may follow in Consequence.
Your Ships of War, & all other Vessells, not actually in our possession in Jas. River, are however driven beyond a possibility of escaping, and are in the predicament & Condition of a Town blockaded by land, when it is contrary to the Rules of War, that any public Stores shou'd be destroyed. I therefore shall demand from you, Sir, a full Account of whatever may be destroyed, on board Vessells or otherwise, and I need not mention to you what the Rules of War are in these Cases.I am Sir your Obedt. Hble. Servt.
w. PHILLIPS
P. S. Mr. Steel who is thoroughly master of the subject of the Action
with the Vessells last Night can with the other Officers I have released
upon parole inform you of all the Particulars. W. P.
Camp at Osburns Apl. 2gth 1781
Sir,
When I was at Williamsburg and at Petersburg I gave several I[n]habitants and Country People protections for their person and properties; I did this without asking or even considering whether these People were either Friends or Foes, actuated by no other motive than that of pure humanity. I understand from almost undoubted authority The War Moves to Virginia that several of these Persons have been taken up by their malicious Neighbours and sent to your Quarters, where preparations are making for their being ill treated, a report which I sincerely hope may be without foundation. I repeat to you, Sir, that my protections were given generally from a wish that in the distruction of public Stores as little damage as possible might be done to private property and to the persons of individuals, but at any rate I shall insist upon my Sign manual being held sacred, and I am obliged to declare to you, Sir, that if any Persons under the discription I have given, recieve ill treatment, I shall be under the necessity of sending to Petersburg & giving that chastisement to the illiberal persecutors of innocent People which their conduct shall deserve; and I further declare to you, Sir, should any person be put to death under the pretence of their being Spies of, or Friends to, the British Government, I will make the Shores of James River an example of terror to the rest of Virginia. It is from the violent measures resolutions of the present House of Deligates Counce!, and Governor of Virginia, that I am impelled to use this language, which the common temper of my disposition is hurt at. I will hope that you, Sir, whom I have understood to be a Gentleman of liberal principles will not countenance, still less permit to be carried into execution the barberous spirit, which seems to prevail in the Councils of the present civil power of this Colony.
I do assure you, Sir, I am extremely inclined to carry on this unfortunate Contest with every degree of Humanity and I will believe you intend doing the same. I am Sir Your most Obt. Humbl. Scrt.
W. PHILIPS

Wesley Chapel's History & Presence
Wesley Chapel is an unincorporated census-designated place of 6.1 square miles at the southern border of Pasco County near I-75 and I-275. In 2010, the US Census recorded 44,092 residents. It is one of the fastest growing areas in the United States

John Boyette was born in 1875, the son of John “Berry” Boyette and nephew of Thomas Ashley Boyette. He is shown with his wife Blanche, and children, Johnnie, William, Ruby, and Vera. Photo courtesy of Cletia Pierce, from Images of America: Wesley Chapel by Madonna Jervis Wise. (e2679) The pioneer Boyett(e), Gillett(e), Godwin, and Kersey families received land grants in the area in the 1840s. The real influx of settlers, however, began around the War Between the States when the Stanleys and Coopers arrived. A historical marker has: “Originally called Double Branch for the twin creeks that flowed across the Boyette land, the community was named for the Methodist chapel that stood on the northwest corner of SR 54 and Boyette Road.” The church itself was named for John Wesley, the founder of the Methodist movement. The name “Wesley Chapel” appears in Hernando County school board records from 1877-1878. At this time, Pasco and Citrus Counties were united as part of Hernando County. Previous Names for Wesley Chapel

(e2656) A popular nickname for the area at that time was Gatorville. It was not because of University of Florida either. In September of 1887 voting precincts were established for the newly-formed Pasco County. Wesley Chapel was designated Precinct 4. A post office operated in the area from 1897 to 1902. The post office was called “Wesley,” and maps during that period have the shortened name “Wesley” and some school board minutes also used the shortened name. Since its founding in 1878, the Double Branch Baptist Church (now the First Baptist Church) has served as a focus for Wesley Chapel community life. The church has had three buildings in its long history. Henry Ryals was pastor in the first building in 1880, Ed Bryant the second in 1935, and Lynn Foster the third in 1970. Early Wesley Chapel Industries

(Florida State Archives) The turpentine still and sawmill represented early industries, though cattle ranching and hog farming on the then open range, crop farming, and citrus growing predominated. When times were hard people turned to charcoal making and even moonshining to survive. Most roads began as wagon tracks between the farms and ranches and the locations where goods were sold. Eventually these were improved, paved and today have names like State Road 54!

Born on July 25, 1876 in Quitman, Georgia. Moved to Pasco County as a young man and married Ellen Osburn. Agent Waters was shot and killed along with Pasco County Deputy Sheriff Arthur F. Crenshaw from ambush on October 4, 1922. They were returning from a ranch after completing the execution of a search warrant for bootleg liquor. The name of John V. Waters is inscribed (East Wall, Panel 27, Line 5) on the National Law Enforcement Memorial in Washington, D.C. (State of Florida Archives) In 1925, there were 3 incidences of arrests, deaths and illegal moonshine production in Wesley Chapel reported in the Tampa and Dade City newspapers. The moonshine operations continued through 1927, with Federal Marshalls uncovering numerous stills and confiscating thousands of gallons of liquor and mash.

Today there are eight public elementary schools in Wesley Chapel, as well as two middle schools and two high schools. In fact, the Double Branch Baptist Church was renamed the First Baptist Church in 1999, the same year as Wesley Chapel High School opened. Wesley Chapel is an unincorporated area at the southern border of Pasco County, approximately midway between the east and west borders. It is a unique part of Florida's Nature Coast. Arkyan Is Wesley Chapel part of the Nature Coast? Wesley Chapel continues to grow in population and amenities. In an area that was pre-designated for economic growth and development, the Connected City is focused on the next-generation experience of its residents. This is not simply rooftops, streets and commerce, this is Smart Homes, autonomous vehicle paths and a business core designed to attract and support the best and brightest, according to Pasco County. And, though Wesley Chapel seems more like a bedroom community of Tampa, its location within Pasco County makes it part of Florida’s Nature Coast. There is certainly a lot of shiny new stuff there along with a history that is common to the rest of our area.
Tumblr media
Wesley Chapel is one of the fastest growing areas of Florida with tons of options and amenities. Image courtesy of Pixabay My eldest son chose to live in Wesley Chapel, even though he was raised in Brooksville. As a young man, it was more appealing to him to live in a multi-story apartment complex with twenty chain restaurants that will deliver to him at any time. He still loves to come out and kayak, fish and walk in the woods. He would rather drive to the outdoor recreation. I would rather drive to the shopping and restaurants. Florida’s Nature Coast has it all and Wesley Chapel is an important part of that. Read the full article

No One Likes You, Bill De Blasio The Federalist ^ | May 16, 2019 | Madeline Osburn
Before New York Mayor Bill de Blasio even officially announced his presidential bid on Thursday, New Yorkers were already pleading for him give up his White House ambitions.
De Blasio, who has been mayor of America’s largest city since 2014, is now one of the 25 Democratic candidates seeking a presidential nomination, despite the lack of support from his own constituents. His approval rating sits at 42 percent, and an April poll found that 76 percent of New York City voters did not want de Blasio to run for president. In March, a Monmouth poll found that de Blasio was the only Democrat asked about with a negative favorability.
While one would think his socialist policies, such as universal pre-k and the New York City Green Deal, would make him popular among his progressive-leaning constituency, he is consistently mocked for blunders and disingenuous attempts to relate to the working class.

Review: Highland Apartments by Mansley
This autumn we sent Chris Osburn on a long weekend to Scotland’s cultural capital, Inverness, where he checked into the rather sumptuous Highland Apartments by Mansley…
In A Nutshell
Highland Apartments by Mansley is a collection of 16 self-catering luxury apartments located in the heart of Inverness and set on the eastern bank of the River Ness across from Inverness Castle and steps away from most of the city’s best restaurants, bars, pubs, shops and other amenities.
What Makes It Special?
For a “best of both worlds” getaway, Highland Apartments fit our bill perfectly offering an urban base for rural pursuits. Hardly a raging metropolis, Inverness nonetheless has a compact city centre with a surprising abundance of excellent restaurants, bars and pubs. Our apartment was within a short stroll of most – as well as a quick and easy walk from the train station. But our main reason for visiting the largest city – and cultural capital – of the Scottish Highlands was to access the surrounding countryside. From Fortrose on the Moray Firth to Loch an Eilein in the heart of the Cairngorms, the range of beauty spots within an hour or so drive from Highland Apartments is vast. And of course, achingly scenic Loch Ness is only minutes away. Cruising around the lochs, bens and glen to muck about in the wilderness and then returning home to our city digs (and a hot bath and cup of tea) was a delightful experience.
Our Stay
We stayed three nights in mid October in a ginormous one bed, two bath apartment with an almost equally ginormous balcony overlooking the River Ness and with a view of Inverness Castle. Bed and furniture were plush and attractive. The contemporary, top-line open kitchen with large dining table was more than suitable for a self-catering holiday. For a few nights in town with daily excursions to the countryside, our apartment’s location (not to mention its secure and reserved garage parking) couldn’t be beat!
We Loved
Comfort and convenience were the key elements that made our accommodation such a lovely place to spend a few days. We would have loved to stay longer, see a little more of the city and a lot more of the Highlands.
We’re Not So Sure About…
Getting from one room to another proved to be a bit of a logistical challenge sometimes with respect to figuring out which light switches were for what and not having to backtrack in the dark to turn the lights out.
In The Neighbourhood
We really enjoyed being able to step out in the evening to walk along the river to the Ness Islands. A picture perfect set of two wooded isles in the midst of the River Ness and just south of the city centre, Ness Islands form a lovely little park connected to each other and the mainline by two Victorian suspension bridges.
From there we might have grabbed a bite or a pint or purchased some provisions for later before wandering back and calling it a night. Across the bridge from the apartment was Rocpool, an extra yummy option for seafood. Stumbling distance from our building’s entrance, Gellions Bar was and ace pub for chatting with locals and catching some live music. Tesco Extra, M&S, Co-op Food, a local market and local more retail were nearby.
Inverness Castle is essentially across the street from the apartment building.
The Guests
Guests included empty nesters on a shopping spree, millennial couples on a weekend retreat, business travellers and families.
It’s Perfect For
Highland Apartments by Mansley would be a smart choice for anyone looking for roomy and well kempt accommodations in the heart of Inverness. Even if self-catering’s not your thing, you’ll have no problem getting whatever you need just beyond the building’s doorstep.

The 2020 Virtual Woody Guthrie Festival came to a close this past Sunday, putting a wrap on a bold journey into unknown territory for the Woody Guthrie Coalition and the annual fest. Following an impressive all-star line-up of songwriters on Tuesday and Saturday’s broadcasts, the invaluable Terry “Buffalo” Ware got the Sunday show underway with his rollicking “Plain As Day” and some extra fun picking. Next up, Melissa Hembree joined by her pals, Michael Hurd on mandolin and Bruce Metcalf on acoustic bass, performed a great poignant new song, “Okfuskee” down in front of the Woody statue in downtown Okemah. It doesn’t get more fitting than that. Or does it?
Andy Adams made his case, by delivering a stunning version of Jimmy LaFave’s “Music From the Motorcourt,” that does a fine job of capturing the after-hours hotel parking lot scene that really inspires so many. I really enjoyed Adams’ albeit brief performance at the Old Church here in Perkins, OK just a few months back, and have tuned into several of his own livestreams since. Keeping with the LaFave theme, Adams closed out his segment with another of the beloved songwriter and mentor, the aptly titled, “Woody Guthrie.” Up next, the multi-talented, Ali Harter with an older song she indicated she had recently dug out, “Anti-Political, Unpolitical Song.” Not only a gifted songwriter, Harter also designed this year’s logo and merch via her Pigs Fly Shop, and all her endeavors certainly deserve your attention. OKCs K.C. Clifford performed next, straight from her home’s staircase with a really great song that I believe to be titled, “Remember When.” I haven’t taken the opportunity to catch Clifford live yet, but now I certainly know I need to. You probably need to as well. Tell her I sent you. Robert Williams came next, with a nice sing-a-long on Woody’s “So Long, It’s Been Good to Know Yuh” and was followed by the wonderful, Susan Herndon performing her take of the traditional, “This Train is Bound For Glory.” Need a pick-me-up? Williams and Herdon’s songs should do the trick. Following up on their duo performance on the opening night, Travis Fite and Monica Taylor returned with Fite on vocals for Woody’s “Dust Pneumonia Blues,” which has always been a personal favorite of mine from the vast Guthrie catalog. Great, fun version.
Also returning from Saturday’s show, was another song from Betty Soo. This time, a stunning rendition of her own “Henry & Me,” which just stopped me in my tracks and was one of my favorite songs of the festival. I’ll definitely be digging more into this gifted songwriter’s songs soon. With a perfect Terilingua backdrop, good ol’ Butch Hancock was back with well wishes, a bit of hope and a Flatlander’s cut, “One Road More.” Next, Nellie Clay served as our Okenah tour guide in a great production type clip accompanying a soundtrack of Clay performing Woody’s “Ranger’s Command.” Nellie’s choice of song while visiting the Crystal Theatre, the Pastures of Plenty stage and Guthrie’s homestead for the clip, was just exactly perfect. Jared Deck followed, with his soulful “Mountain Valley Road” that had me wishing for at least one more. Instead, Jaimee Harris was back with “On The Surface,” and a short tale detailing the travels that took her from Terilingua, to Okemah to Taos and Eliza Gilkyson’s home. Harris’ stripped down performances were a highlight throughout the festival, and this version was no different. Definitely take the time to listen. Joel Rafael also returned again, this time with a nice version of “Glory Bound,” followed by the sounds of the Red Dirt Rangers and “Strawberries and Watermelon.” Bristow, Oklahoma’s Cassie Latshaw next performed, what I think is titled, “Hide Away” with her friends Steven and Paul and gave me yet another Okie songwriter I really need to catch soon. Annie Guthrie was back with a new song, one she indicated was still being worked out, and well, she doesn’t really care if you have an opinion about it. Keep it to yourself friend. Right there, the spirit of the Guthrie family was perfectly represented, and despite her likely disregard for this writer’s opinion, it’s a damn fine song.
Gypsy Twang comprised of Sarah Barker Huhn, and Steve Huhn, as well as John Williams and Craig Skinner, added a beautiful version of Woody’s “Ramblin’ Round.” Next, Larry Spears’ “Puppeteer” and it’s Dylan-esque cadence, proceeded to blow me away. Just a great song, look it up. Leading us into the closing stretch, Ken Pomeroy presented her inspired tale of Dylan and Baez, titled, “Joan.” It’s been so much fun watching Pomeroy develop as a songwriter, and even when she covers a song, as she did next with “Deportees,” she unmistakably leaves her fingerprints all of it. I can’t recommend her Horton Records debut release, “Hallways” enough, so be sure to look it up. Jacob Tovar returned from his barn for Tom Skinner’s “Crystal,” while R.T. Valine, with birds accompanying delivered a timely take on “Wish This World (Would Settle Down), while his good boy, Wino, kept watch. In the Oklahoma music scene, I doubt there;s a more valuable asset than Kyle Reid. Besides fronting his own endeavors, Reid has played a part in countless local shows and recordings. Reid’s tent set last year with his Low Swinging Chariots was a highlight, and I always look forward to any opportunity to hear his contributions, which thankfully happens quite frequently here in the OKC area. For this year’s fest, Reid recorded a great original, “Dance Alone” and followed it up with Woody’s Hobo’s Lullaby.”
Throughout the pandemic, Carter Sampson has been right there, doing her part to help keep us sane, and maybe herself too. I’ve probably tuned into more Carter livestreams this year than anyone elses, and there’s a couple of reasons. First, she’s performed nearly 60 of her “Happy Hour w/Carter & Bubba,”, and second, each one has been outstanding. Along with her faithful, canine rescue, Bubba, Sampson provides great songs, stories, Shel Silverstein and well, hope. Hope that all this will someday end. Here, Sampson and Bubba perform a great version of “Queen of Oklahoma” and her more recent, “Rattlesnake Kate” from “Lucky” on Horton Records. Next, Peggy Johnson performed a pair of songs that always hit me hard, “One of the Ones” and “Dustbowl Lullaby.” I just discovered Johnson at last year’s fest, and I’m so glad I did. Closing in on the end, Michigan’s Chris Buhalis dropped in again with another brilliant song for the “Working People,” and introduced himself as a new favorite that I must become more familiar with. Any songwriter that can include a line about Bob Gibson’s fastball high and tight, is on to something. The great Greg Jacobs came up next from Greg Johnson’s Blue Door in Oklahoma City for a loving take on “Do Re Mi,” and a poignant version of his own, “Footprints” before our host Terry Ware wrapped up this years recorded performances for the year with the traditionally played Hoot for Huntington’s, sing-along take of Bob Childer’s “Woody’s Road.”
Like everything else in this crazy world right now, this year’s festival was different, and not quite what any of us wanted. Thankfully though, it did happen. I know I needed it, our community needed it and undoubtedly the performers needed it. Any sense of normalcy has to be grasped, and thank goodness the Woody Guthrie Coalition came through for us, because it really helped. Throughout the broadcasts, performer after performer mentioned how much they missed, and how much they look forward to actually sweating it out at the festival next year. Count me in. Next year’s Woody Guthrie Festival will hopefully return with live performances from Okemah on July 14th -18th. A huge thank you to all the 2020 festival artists, supporters, contributors, Friends of the Festival and Coalition members. The fact that together, all of these people were able to convey the sense of family and spirit over a livestream process, is nothing short of amazing. It really shows the depth of dedication and the love of the music that each one of these beautiful people possesses. I really missed seeing everyone this year, and eagerly look forward to the next time we can all get together. As always, an extra loud thank you to all the members of the Festival Board of Directors: President Randy Norman, Vice-President Gary Hart, Dana Gunn, Miranda Huff, Fred Ellert, Cheyenne Felker, Lindsey Flowers, Maddie Gregory, Roger Hostenbach, Roger Osburn, Dennis Whiteman and Guy Zahller, and lastly, of course, the Guthrie Family. Special people, each and every one.
The 2020 WoodyFest stream can still  be viewed until the end of the month on Youtube here: https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=woodyfest+2020 and the Coalition would definitely appreciate any support via donations and 2020 fest merchandise. Is Intermittent Fasting Bad for People with Thyroid Issues?
Is intermittent fasting a good idea for people with thyroid issues?
It’s a common question. After all, we know that the thyroid gland is a sensitive barometer of overall caloric sufficiency in the body. If a fast sends a message of caloric insufficiency, and the body thinks “times are tough,” the thyroid may presumably down-regulate its function to slow down the metabolic rate and preserve energy and nutrients. Caution is justifiable.
What Happens to Thyroid Function When You Fast?
It’s all going to be specific to the individual fasting, of course, but here’s what studies of humans have shown:
In 1978, researchers placed 45 obese human subjects on a 4-day fast, studying their thyroid hormones levels before and during the fast, and after refeeding. Everyone’s TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) and T4 (inactive thyroid hormone) went up during the fast. Everyone’s T3 (active thyroid hormone) dropped. Men saw bigger changes than women. When they supplemented T4 during the fast, T3 still dropped. When they supplemented T3, T3 was maintained.
After the fast, what the people ate affected whether their thyroid hormones recovered.
Those who ate pure carbohydrate saw their T3 return to normal.
Those who ate mixed meals of fat, carbs, and protein saw their T3 return to normal.
Those who ate only protein still had lower T3.
Those who ate only fat still had lower T3.
Summary: A four-day fast depresses thyroid function in obese people without preexisting thyroid issues. Refeeding with carbs and/or a mixed meal restores it; protein or fat alone does not.
In 1980, researchers placed obese human subjects with normal thyroid function on a 10-day fast. Prior to fasting, they ate 1500 calories per day for five days. During the fast, their T3 levels dropped from 167 ng/dl to 86 ng/dl despite repeated infusions of thyrotropin releasing hormone (TRH), to which they were unresponsive. Normally, TRH will cause TSH to rise, thereby stimulating thyroid hormone production, but this didn’t happen during the fast.
After fasting, five days of 1500-calorie refeeding still weren’t enough for T3 and TSH responsiveness to TRH infusions to fully recover.
Summary: A 10-day fast depresses T3 levels and thyroid responsiveness to thyrotropin releasing hormone, even after five days of refeeding.
What about shorter, less extreme fasting? Most people reading this aren’t doing 4- or 10-day fasts. They’re doing truncated eating windows. They’re skipping meals for a day, here and there. Do we have any studies on thyroid function during those types of fasts?
In Ramadan fasting, you eat before sunrise and fast until sunset. During the fast, you abstain from both food and drink (even water). Ramadan fasting is less extreme than four-day or 10-day all-out fasts and thus a bit more relevant to the average IFer.
In healthy Muslim males, Ramadan fasting has no effect on thyroid function or hormone levels. Other than minor fluctuations, TSH, T3, T4, and all other measures of thyroid function remain virtually unchanged in males during Ramadan.
Women may experience drops in T4 and T3 during the last few days of Ramadan.
Most interestingly, Ramadan fasters who are hypothyroid patients taking thyroid hormones generally do not have to increase their dosages during Ramadan. In fact, they see improved quality of life following the month of fasting.
How About Alternate-Day Fasting?
In one study, groups of people with subclinical hypothyroid and normal thyroid status were either placed on alternate-day fasting (25% of calories on fasting days, 125% of calories on non-fasting days) or calorie restriction (75% of calories in perpetuity) for six months. Both groups lost about the same amount of weight and body fat. In hypothyroid patients, fasting produced greater improvements in fasting insulin and insulin resistance.
In other words, it worked about as well as (and in some respects, better than) calorie restriction.
That’s about it for published research on the effects of fasting on thyroid function in both euthyroid and subtly hypothyroid people. While there weren’t any studies I could find looking at the effects of intermittent fasting on clinically hypothyroid people, I think we can make some inferences on fasting and hypothyroidism.
Tips for Fasting When You Have Thyroid Issues
1. Make sure you’re replete in the thyroid-relevant nutrients.
Like:
Selenium: for converting T4 to active T3
Iodine: for making thyroid hormone
Zinc: for thyroid function
2. Don’t combine fasting with extreme calorie restriction.
What really seems to destroy thyroid function is chronic calorie restriction—going “without” for weeks, months, and years on end. Your thyroid is always watching you, watching the signals you send. Feasting and fasting sends a signal of abundance. Reducing calories by 20% for months sends the opposite signal, and reduced thyroid function may be the result.
If you fast, make sure you eat enough food when you actually eat.
3. If you’re hypothyroid but have it under control with thyroid hormone, fasting will probably work for you.
Taking thyroid hormone the right way effectively renders you euthyroid (normal thyroid function). You can proceed with fasting without much worry; just monitor your thyroid hormones and track your subjective impression of how it’s going.
4. If you’re subclinically hypothyroid, fasting is probably okay.
Research linked above shows that people with subclinical hypothyroid can benefit from alternate day fasting (where the “fast” day is actually a super low-calorie day and the “fed” day involves eating extra food).
5. If you’re hypothyroid and trying to fix it naturally, long fasting is probably not a great idea.
One of T3’s roles is to protect the muscle from atrophying during fasts. If you have low T3 and want to handle it naturally, launching into a fasting routine will probably be counterproductive and may even speed up muscle loss. This is exactly what you don’t want to happen during a fast.
Get the hypothyroidism handled before you try a serious fast (~24 hours+).
6. If you’re hypothyroid and trying to fix it naturally, shorter eating windows may help.
I don’t recommend 24 hour+ fasts for hypothyroid patients going it alone, but I do think there’s an argument for a shorter eating window, especially if that eating window falls during the daylight hours.
Like everything else in the body, thyroid function follows a circadian rhythm. Food is a powerful circadian entrainer. If you’re eating at all hours of the day and night, or packing most of your calories late in the day and on into the evening hours, this may throw off your circadian rhythm and your thyroid function along with it.
Conversely, if your eating window is from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., you’re eating with the sun, which syncs your biological clock with the objective daytime.
7. Be careful on the extended fasts.
I don’t recommend them for hypothyroid patients, but I know you’re a curious, experimental bunch who will try it regardless. If that’s you, be cautious. Listen to your body. Track your numbers. Don’t be afraid or feel ashamed if you have to cut the fast short with a meal.
8. If it feels stressful, it probably is.
Stress inhibits the conversion of T4 to T3, thereby reducing the level of active thyroid hormone in your body. Don’t ignore stress, especially if it’s the fasting that seems stressful.
9. If fasting affects your sleep, it’s probably affecting your thyroid.
Adequate sleep is a bare minimum requirement for good thyroid function. Some (but not all) people report worse sleep when fasting. Others (but not all) report better sleep when fasting. This could go either way—just make sure you know which way it’s affecting you and your sleep.
That’s about it. The subject isn’t as extensively researched as I’d like, and there’s a lot of individual variation, but we have a decent amount of info to go on and can make some decent inferences. If you have any questions about fasting and hypothyroidism, ask down below. I can probably pick Elle Russ’ brain (the real thyroid expert around here) for some input, too.
Take care, everyone!
